Know it's been a long time since this thread, but I've run into some deeds that mention the 'reputed Pilesgrove line". so I'm wondering if anything else has been discovered in the interim?

20 April 1765, From a warrant for 1000 acres dated 10 Feb 1764 granted to William Heulings (WJS:512) 495 acres conveyed to to Samuel Linch, Obediah Lloyd and Jacob Nelson on May 15, 1764. Puruant thereto, Linch, Lloyd and Jacob Nelson secured the return of two surveys, both date April 20,1765 approved May 10, 1765 one for 124 acres in Pilesgrove , in the
'reputed Pilesgrove line', bordering on lands of Peter Lowderback, Carmick and Linch and Two Penny Run, and the other for 119 acres in Pilesgrove on the west side of Oldmans creek, adjoining Peter Lowderback and Ezekiel Wright (WJ L 361;362)

On the same date April, 20 1765, Linch, Lloyd and Nelson all yeomen of Pilesgrove, conveyed to Peter Lowderback, 381 acres of unappropriated land, part of 495 acres (SNJ W:241).
On Aug 21, 1772 Jacob Nelson and Sarah h/w made a mortgage to John Test, covering 119 acres on Oldmans Creek, next to Louderback and Wright (SC Mtg A:65). On March 9, 1787 Jacob Nelson (no wife named) made a mortgage to Joseph Ball, covering the same 119 acres, which he had acquired by survey above. (SC Mtg A:a78).

Deed Book A p. 235 10 Nov 1780
Samuel Burman of UPN, yeoman and Rachel h/w to John Curry of Pilesgrove.
Whereas Obadiah Lloyd had 2 tracts in Pilesgrove: one by release from Samuel Linch, Esq and Jacob Nealson by deed 18 Oct 1765
Another 106 and 3/4 acres, part of a tract of 130 a. conveyed to Ob. Lloyd and Rebecca h/w by Samuel Linch deed of 3 May 1764, part of Thomas Piles 10,000 acres, but the 106 acres was not contained within Pilesgrove.***
Lloyd had it surveyed and recorded in Burlington
The other tract sold to Ob. Lloyd 13 Oct 1765 by lands of Carmick, 34 a.
All together 175 acres more or less, which Lloyd sold to Jeconias Wood and Christianna h/w 7 Jun 1777, who sold to Joseph Dean and Hannah h/w who sold to Samuel Burman 16 Aug 1779. Now Burman sells 175 acres to John Curry:
Wit: Mathias Louderbach and Thomas Denny. Recorded 13 March 1793

What I think this means, is some lands that were supposedly part of Pilesgrove were found to be overlapping into Upper Pennsneck twp, now Oldmans/Auburn, so must have something to do with a dispute about the line. So, they went to the WJ Society for warrant and surveys for unappropriated lands. Which means there should be record made in Burlington, though now the State Archives should have them. But it was another 30 years before anything recorded in the local deeds.

It doesn't answer any questions about a suit, and I've queried a couple of local long time researchers, but have yet to find anything more definitive.

The big question for me, is this may in some way be part of the reason I am finding it so difficult to trace back to first owners along the western Pilesgrove border in UPN.

Barbara, did you ever get a copy of that old survey from SCHS or find any details about a settlement/suit? Think I need to see it now too.

Val

PS I would search also in Chester co, PA for Pyles/Piles. I may have more for you in the interim. vnc
