Re: Josiah Hurd

Some information that may be of interest about the Hurd's of Dover, New Jersey.

From the book "Dover History" by Charles D. Platt, 1914, pp.367-369.

From James Lincoln Hurd, Morris St., Dover, July 9, 1913:
Mr. Hurd has a very complete account of the Hurd family, which has cost him many miles of travel, and much research. He has about three thousand names. The name is found in the forms Hurd, Heard, and Hord, perhaps Hard.
It is stated in the "History of Morris County," published in 1882, that Moses Hurd came from Dover, New Hampshire, to Old Tye, New Jersey, and that the name. Old Tye, was changed to Dover in connection with this fact. But the fact appears to be that the first Hurd to come to Dover, New Jersey, was Josiah Hurd, whose tombstone, with appropriate dates, may be seen in the graveyard of the Presbyterian church at Succasunna, and, morover, he came from Killingworth, Connecticut. The legend about Dover. New Hampshire, may have got started in connection with the Heard Garrison House of that place, which was famous as being the only fort which withstood the Indian attack and massacre of June 27, 1689. The poet Whittier, in his poem, "Snowbound," refers to
relatives of his who had a part in that deadly encounter with the Indians"
Our mother, while she turned her wheel
Or run the new-knit stocking-heel,
Told how the Indian hordes came down
At midnight on Cocheco town,
And how her own great-uncle bore
His cruel scalp-mark to fourscore.
John Hurd, civil engineer, born in Somerset County, England, came over in the ship Mary and John, and landed at Plymouth, March 20, 1630. (See Stiles' History of Ancient Windsor, Ct.) John Hurd was among the first settlers in Windsor, Ct., and in 1644 was in Stratford, Ct. (See Orcutt's History of Stratford, Ct., Vol. i, p. 113.) This is the original immigrant.
Adam Hurd, born 1611, was a son of the above John Hurd. Adam Hurd had a son John Hurd, who married Anna Judson. This John Hurd died in 1683. His son Ebenezer Hurd, born Nov. 9, 1668, married Sarah Lane.
He was famous as the great mailrider of Connecticut. His son Josiah, born Nov. 5, 1701, married Phebe Buell in 1725. He is buried in Killingworth (now Clinton), Conn. His son Josiah, born in Killingworth, Ct., on June 7, 1734, removed to Morris County, N. J., and married Hannah Brown of Bottle Hill. He settled in Dover, N. J., somewhere about 1756. He died June 29, 1807, and his tombstone may be seen near the Presbyterian church at Succasunna. He was a private soldier in the Revolution. His son, Moses Hurd, born Oct. 4, 1771, married Mary Stiles. He died 1831. His son, Jacob Hurd. born Oct. 4, 1798, married Mary Hoagland. He died Aug. 6, 1871. He kept a noted tavern in Dover. His son, John Ward Hurd, born Aug. 12, 1827, married (i) Hawley, (2) King. He died Dec. 31, 1911. He was the donor of Hurd Park.
James Lincoln Hurd is a descendant of Joseph Hurd, of Hurdtown, brother of Moses Hurd who married Mary Stiles. Joseph — David B. — Edward C. — James Lincoln — John Schrader Hurd.
All the Dover Hurds are descendants of John and Priscilla Alden. Jacob Hurd was a trustee of the Dover public school in 1831, and later. His signature may be seen in the old record book, as chairman of a meeting held April 5, 1842.
On February 6, 191 1, Mr. John W. Hurd donated the land for a park, to be known as Hurd Park, in front of the Hurd homestead on Blackwell street. The Common Council accepted the gift. The park consists of six acres and more. On October 12, 191 1, Hurd Park was formally dedicated with appropriate exercises held on the ground in front of Mr. Hurd's house. Mr. Hurd sat in his house and witnessed the proceedings.
Mr. Wm. H. Baker has a specimen of pen work made by Stephen Hurd. who was a Dover teacher about 1807-8. It shows the names of members of the Baker family and is beautifully illuininated in color. This Stephen Hurd, then, is the earliest Dover teacher of whom we have any trace. He was a brother of Dan and Major Joseph Hurd, who founded Hurdtown. He married Lydia Fairchild. He afterwards went to Sparta, built a store there and became a prominent citizen. He died about the age of thirty, leaving a family. George W. Hurd, of Abilene, Kansas, a lawyer, is a descendant. The old Hurd house in Sparta is a notable mansion, with hand-carved mantels. A facsimile of this pen work by Stephen Hurd would be of interest, in color.
Never heard of such a place in Morris County. There is a New Ipswich in New Hampshire.

GenealogyBank has this newspaper, so you can see the article for yourself.

USGENWEB for Morris County lists the death notices published in the Morristown newspaper "Genius of Liberty." One notice states "April 5, 1803 at New Ipewich, 2 small children of Mr. D. Bigelow."

I have not been able to locate a New Ipewich in Morris County. Does anyone know if this is or was a town in this county, or if perhaps this is a misprint of another town's name?

thanks for any suggestions, Karen

The Joint Free Public Library of Morristown/Morris Township is the one on South Street and Miller Road in Morristown -- NOT the Morris County Library.

JFPLMMT has all the newspapers you would need on microfilm. Once you get the issue, etc. from the index, you can make your own copy of the obit. Obits frequently mention the cemetery. The last time I was there the obit indexes were near the librarian's desk.

Also check JFPLMMT for cemetery listings.

This is an amazing genealogy collection. What you see when you walk into the room is merely the tip of the iceberg. There are thousands and thousands more items in the back room. Don't be shy about asking for librarian's suggestions. They love to help and are very good at it. Once you get comfortable with the scope of their collection, most other libraries will pale in comparison. One of the librarians told me years ago: "don't assume that we don't have what you need, because we probably do."

Their main focus is Morris County, but they have plenty of items for other NJ counties. Also, many items for New York, New England other nearby states.

Good luck with your search.

Sharon

Hi.

I replied to this post yesterday, but somehow my post disappeared.

Charles was still living in 1905. I found him in the 1905 census index on FamilySearch. Eliza, Whitfield and Rosa were also in the family.

The Joint Free Library of Morristown and Morris Township has a fantastic genealogy collection. If you live in NJ or nearby, it would probably be worth a trip for you.

If not, they do take requests by mail.

http://www.jfpl.org/

Click on North Jersey History Center in the upper right.

The History Center has indexes for obituaries, marriages and other items in Morristown newspapers from 1798 to present. They have the newspapers themselves on microfilm. His obit likely says where he was buried and/or the funeral home. If you have other obits/death dates you need for this family (Eliza?), you can probably order them all at once.

Good luck in your search.

Sharon

I suggest you contact the library.

I think I just searched for the last name Conklin in Ramapo, but I just checked
Eliza Conklin
b. 1810
Lived in: Ramapo, Rockland County

1895 NY census
Ramapo
Bottom of 2nd column from the left

I also searched for Conklin in Ho-Ho-Kus in 1895 and found 3 women named Eliza Conklin. Two appear to be wives and one is alone in a household and appears to be over 60. The 1895 census isn't very specific and this one is very hard to read.

I found them in Ho-Ho-Kus in 1900 and in the NJ state census of 1895
Richard Williams
Harddie
Edith
Bessie
Ethel
Albert

The next entry is
Frank Conklin
Francis

Then I stumbled on
1875 NY Census Ramapo, Rockaway Co., NY
Elisabeth Conklin 66
W* ??? 23
Frank 17
Adelaide 4

1880 Ramapo
Eliza Conklin 70 NJ
Frank 22 NY son
Adaline 9 NY granddaughter

1892 Ramapo
Richard H Williams 50
Adalaide 23
Eda 4
Bessie 1

There's also an 1892 record in Ramapo for
Frank Conklin 36
Francis 33
Eliza 82

So, it looks like Addie had a grandmother named Eliza and an uncle named Frank. After that it gets really confusing.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

She married Richard Henry Williams about 1888 probably in New Jersey but perhaps in New York. She was living in 1940 in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. Looking for information on when she died, where is she buried and who are her parents. Any information is appreciated.

Hi Sharon:

Thank you so much for helping out. I've thought of Moses' death certificate option and have already ordered a copy from the archives. I've looked into following their children and have a file put together to look their births up at the archives. I do need to take a trip there.

Thank you for explaining the difference in the year of Moses' death. I did not understand that discrepancy. The Iron Era newspaper is a source that I've never used. I'll have to go to it now that I know about it. Many of my families were in the Randolph area so that newspaper may give me some new clues.

I, too, am guessing that Phebe C. is Phebe Caroline because of the census listing.

I find that I have dead ends in three of the four of my maternal g-g-g-grandmother lines due to circumstances similar to this, i.e. can't find the maiden name of the mother. And only recently did I break through the fourth one. I'm determined to make some headway on this one, too.

Thank you again for your help. It was nice of you to respond.

Regards,
Carol
Hello:

Did a bit of checking for you.

You mentioned that "they" (Moses and Phebe I presume) lived in Dover in the 1880 census. In fact only Moses was listed. He was listed as married, but no wife was shown in the household. The 1880 census was taken in June, and Moses was living then. So he did not die in April 1880.

I checked Family Search and located an index entry for his death, given as April 30, 1880. I imagine this is where you got his death date. The people who indexed NJ vitals for LDS apparently did not realize that the record books began in June and ended in May of the following year. So most entries for the 2nd half of the year were indexed for the wrong year.

Moses Freeman died 30 April 1881. I located a death notice in The Iron Era newspaper for 7 May 1881.

http://www.rtlibrary.org/ie1881.html

Select the date May 7 to see the PDF file. The notice you want is at the bottom of the 2nd page.

I suggest that you get a copy of Moses' death certificate from the NJ Archives.

Use the index here:

https://wwwnet1.state.nj.us/DOS/Admin/ArchivesDBPortal/Death...

Then follow the instructions for ordering.

By 1881, death certificates were supposed to include parents' names, but not all did. However, the certificate should indicate where he was buried and perhaps where he was born. This should help you.

I also note that in the 1870 census Moses' wife is called Caroline. I imagine that this is what Phebe's initial stands for.

You may also find it helpful to follow all of Moses and Phebe's children. NJ statewide vital records started in 1848 (including births). There may be a record for any of those children that lists their mother's maiden name.

Good luck with your search.

Sharon

This is a dead end in my tree. I'm hoping someone has anything more on this family. Moses P Freeman b. abt 1817 NJ, d. Apr 30, 1880 in Randolph, married Phebe C. abt 1839. The census shows them having 7 children (Amelia, Alonzo, Edward, Andrew J., Moses T., Mary E., Melissa J.) According to censuses, they lived in Hanover 1850; Randolph in 1860 and 1870; Dover in 1880. Phebe is shown as living in Dover with her son Andrew in the 1900 census. Any ideas about where Moses or Phebe came from or Phebe's last name?

In the 1930 census for Hanover, NJ, my g-grandmother's sister, Nellie Galik, has two children, Wanda and "Vir". Around 1932, Nellie's oldest daughter "Vir" died at about 5-6 years of age. I cannot locate anything on her and am hoping that someone may be able to help. I don't know what "Vir" was short for - Veronica or Virginia maybe. She was born about 1926 according to the census. Does anyone have any access to death notices from early 1930s? The father's name was Anthony Galik.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to connect Susan Tappan Ball with earlier Tappans in Morris County. All of the Hanover Tappans descend from an Abraham Tappan who settled in Hanover in the early 18th century. Margaret, ne of his daughters married Jonathan Cook of Hanover and is an ancestor of mine. (Interestingly, a fragment of DNA that was unusal turned up to be a match to one (obviously not in the Y chromosome)in both a Massachusetts Tappan, and mine, strengthening the Cook-Tappan connection.

The one I am after now, in the line of a third cousin, is Susan Tappan, as noted above. I have a lot of Abraham Tappans in my database, but I cannot find any that married an Olivia. Marriage was in Hanover Presybterian Church

The Dalrymple / Walker Project and YDNA Quest!

Of all the Dalrymples who emigrated to America one family is unique in its DNA - and that is the Dalrymple family in New Jersey in the 18th Century. All other Dalrymples in America are DNA related to some degree but not us ! Our Dalrymple family emigrated from the Townland of Dunamore in Northern Ireland between 1684 and 1737 to New Jersey. The Dalrymple's of Stair were active legally - and as land owners in New Jersey also from 1684 to 1747 through their attorney ! We are searching for male Dalrymples in America as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland for free Y-DNA testing in order to promote research on our Dalrymple / Walker families of New Jersey. Also looking for the related Walker family who went to Loudoun Co., VA before 1757. Please respond to: DalrympleWalkerDNAResearch@yahoo.com
The SSDI states he lived in Morris Plains when he died. The nearest newspaper would be the Morristown Daily Record. Try contacting the Morris County Library or the Morristown Joint Library to see if they can help you obtain an obit.
still looking for my carman family of butler/bloomingdale, nj I have been up against a brick wall for decades now. my 4th grt grandfather, abraham carman, md a woman I know only as vroutjie Sophronia"(little housewife) aka Fannie" she and her husband owned a farm at cols spring lake, a portion of their lands extended over the pecquanonk river near a bridge. this was sold (a small 3 acre parcel) to james and isabella white and a paper mill was used to make toilet paper. judging by the names of their children, whose middle initials were "c" I surmise sophronia maiden name started with C. there were alot of franciscos in the family, my relatives spelled it cisco. the cox family was also around, winfield s cox, upon who my family was closly aligned. as he was the high sheriff of passaic county. my family owned several taverns and was closly aligned with the cook family. sophronia named her children after close family members abraham carmans sister married a man from rockland county, so i thought perhaps she too eas from that area. conklin is a guess, the coughlinn family was also around, wonder if coughlin and concklin are the same. like cachlinn. if anyone researching these names comes across a carman in their research of conklin/coughlinn/ cachlinn, please let me know. fannie carman died in a fire in passaic city. in a hotel owned by ryerson family, run by her son frederick. since the death was unexpected, i am wondering if a coroners report is available. church records omit her maiden name, none of her childrens birth marriage or death records give anything other than fanny as the mothers name. there are two children i have yet to find to try and obtain the info i seek.ellen (mrs. joseph d brown) any help would be greatly appreciated. davidnpr@aol.com
