South Plainfield was part of Piscataway until 1926. So at one time some people may have said they lived in Piscataway if they meant what municipality, but South Plainfield if they meant what specific locality.

"During the 1920’s South Plainfield, which was still a part of Piscataway Township, began to acquire an identity of its own.
After receiving permission from Piscataway Township and the State of New Jersey, South Plainfield was officially incorporated on March 12, 1926."

http://www.southplainfieldnj.com/history/

CLANCY, William J - Looking for burial of my Grandmother's Brother

I am looking for the burial or any other information about my grand-mother's brother. William J CLANCY was born in 1878 in Peterborough, Ontario. He married Chloe / Clara Godfrey in 1910, also in Peterborough, Ontario.

William & Clara lived in South Plainfield, Middlesex, NJ from 1917 - 1942 as I have found him registered for both World Wars. (And possibly as early as 1910 after their marriage.) 1920 & 1930 Census in Piscataway.

Chloe / Clara is suspected to have died some time after the 1930 census. She is not listed as next of kin for WW2. A daughter was born (Margaret CLANCY) about 1918 in New Jersey and she is listed as next of kin. The address at the time was 312 Lane Avenue.

William died some time after July 18, 1942 as he is mentioned in his brother's obituary as still living in South Plainfield, NJ.

Thank you for looking at my query.

Re: Moores Rochfort Experience Fitz Randolph

Hello Nancy - I, too, am descended from Experience
via Moores,Carman, Mundy, Lillie Dickinson (my grandmother). But I'm not familiar with Rochfort yet. I began this "adventure" (genealogy) years ago, and about 12 years ago on the computer. At that time there was some material on F.R. - John Rhymes' early F.R. site (Dr. Mayes writings were there)- John's been a great help to me - as have so many others. About that same time, I also had correspondence with both Bill Gertz and Patty Myers, both of whom have a lot of well-researched material.

I used to belong to both F.R. sites, but my interests took a different route in researching. I did contribute a lot of material to the current (second) F.R. site, including my time-consuming scan of the entire book, "Woodbridge" by Dalley (Dally), which lists a lot of F.R. material that Dally obtained from Vital Stats. (Some time back all that book seem to have been removed from the f.r. site). In fact, I sent a lot of my material and good links especially to the current F.R. site - even mailed a book or two to Trisha.

As I'm sure you know, so many citations are questionable, and there's little if any valid material to go by. It's a lot of fun to read all the history involved, and a real challenge to try to find acceptable written material from way back. I do have some, and if your interests are in that direction, let me know - I'll be so happy to share what I have.
Marian

Now THAT is a story mworth passing on!

Interesting website, Jim- thanks for sharing. You did, though, misread the addressee's last name: it's Thomsen, and he does indeed show up in the 1930 Census on 363 Portia St., South Amboy.
1930 envelope from Bramminge, Denmark to South Amboy, New Jersey

I recently found an old envelope that was sent to South Amboy, New Jersey from Bramminge, Denmark in 1930. You can see the envelope on www.philgen.org (search on Amboy, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page) or click on the link below. I do not find the recipient in the 1930 census nor the address using Google maps and wondered if someone more familiar with South Amboy could help with the name and/or street address. I believe that Bramminge, Denmark may be the birthplace of the recipient and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists.

Here is the link to the photo of the envelope: http://www.philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=for...

Re: Charles Wyant - owned plumbing store in Jamesburg 1910

Querty was: Looking for anyone who knows anything about a Charles Wyant listed in the 1910 census residing on Buckelew Ave in Jamesburg ... Does anyone also know if there are any city/county directories for these years for this area?

I've seen microfilms of city directories of Perth Amboy and Newark from around this time. These generally include some outlying communities, but I don't recall ever seeing Jamesburg. Electronic "card catalogs" (on internet) from Family History Library (FHL) and/or Library of Congress might help find this if one exists.

There were also New Jersey state censuses in 1895, 1905, and 1915 (and maybe 1885 too). I've looked at two of these for Perth Amboy via microfilm "borrowed" (rented really) from the Family History Library.

They aren't indexed so you have to scroll thru, page by page. The census takers seemed to have moved thru the city (over a few weeks) going roughly from southeast toward the northwest. It is fascinating to see how people of various nationalities seemed to be concentrated in certain parts of the community. My favorite entry in these Perth Amboy censuses was an Irish family (not related to me). The children were listed in order (oldest first) and their birth places were something like: "Ireland, Ireland, At Sea, New Jersey, New Jersey, New Jersey ...."

The 1915 census returns for Jamesburg are on FHL microfilm reel 1465544. The returns for Perth Amboy are on reel 1465546. My understanding is that the FHL has a multi-year plan to convert all of their microfilm to digital images (to be placed on the internet) and to prepare indexes as they go. However, it may be some years before they convert these New Jersey state censuses.

Thanks for the info. Wouldn't have thought of checking a Perth Amboy directory. However, I'm wondering if there was an overall Middlesex County directory. According to the library there they have never heard of one for that time period. I was told to check with the Rutgers Archives/Library but I haven't gotten to that yet. Was wondering what kind of feedback I would get from the message boards first. Sometimes you meet some people who personally remember things or had a relative work or live nearby to someone in the community. Thanks, again, for your thoughtful and generous assistance.

In the 1900 census, Heinrich (1838) & Catharina (1836) were living in New Jersey. Their daughter Catherina (1866)was married to George Geair and had two children, William (1892) & Catherina (1899)

I checked the 1910, 1920 & 1930 census and found that George and Catherina had more children so their children were William, Catherina, Marie (1902), George (1905) and Alfred (1912)

In 1930, Catherina (1866) was not listed and George (1866) was listed as a widow so she died between 1920 & 1930. Their daughter, Catherina Geair (1899) was married to Robert Thomas and had two children, Harold (1922) and Miriam ( 1928)

I did a search for an Alfred Geair and found a Wicoff Geair listing with a Charlotte who was born around 1943. Now having Geair and Wicoff, that is the link with this. Alfred F Geair had a relatives, Marie Geair Wicoff who is born around 1944

I think a Marie Geair (1902) married a Wicoff? Or one of Alfred or George’s children name married a Wicoff and named after Marie?

Marie Geair (1902) parents were Catherine Dohn (1866) and George Geair (1864). Catherine Dohn (1866) parents were Heinrich (1838) and Catherina (1836) who came to the USA in 1885.

I think that is how we are related. If I had more information, we could finish linking things together.
Sorry for what your husband did and never fixed. I was born March 2, 1954 and my father was 35. I always wondered what
he did in life for the 15 years before I was born. I meet your son Robert and daugther Nancy and those 15 years filled in complelty for me. I don't forgive him for what he did to you and my mother. Alot came out of the closet.

Joe Szczyradlowski
