James Jackson and Mary Thorne of Woodbridge, NJ - descendants

Greetings,

I am looking for evidence that my Woodbridge, NJ, g-g-grandmother, Isabella Jackson (b. 1823 and m. Joseph Dunham, b. 1814), is a g-granddaughter to James Jackson (b.1704) and Mary Thorne of Woodbridge, NJ, members of the Society of Friends. And if so, through which of the three sons of James and Mary is she descended?

The Friends Meetings of Plainfield and Rahway record James and Mary Jacson (sic) with five children, Sarah (b: 1740.1111), John (b: 1742.0313), Benjamin (b. 1744.0115), Charles (b. 1745.0111), and Margarett (b. 1745.1024). They also record a William and Prudence Jacson with two children, Jeremy (b. 1745.0312) and Phebe (b. 1747.0113). This Meeting rotated for a while among these towns and Woodbridge - http://members.tripod.com/~PlainfieldFriends/birthreg.htm).

Thirty some years later, the NJ Archive records that on February 9, 1779, in Woodbridge, the Tories under Capt. Joseph Ryerson raided the house of Charles Jackson (Tavernkeeper) and took prisoner Am. Capt. Nathaniel Fitz Randolph, just returning from a raid on Staten Island (NJA 2, III, 65, 76-77, 81 and reported here http://gaz.jrshelby.com/woodbridge.htm). Another report records that this occurred at the tavern, which could also have been their home. Sadly, Capt. Fitz Randolph died in captivity the following year.

Sixty-one years later, the 1840 Middlesex, NJ, census records a Charles Jackson (b. 1779) with a wife, two young adult daughters and a teenage son. Coincidently, this Charles was born the same year as the military skirmiish in Woodbridge (listed above). As I find no other caucasian Jackson families in Woodbridge by 1840, I further suspect that Charles' father may be the youngest of James Jackson's (b. 1704) three sons, John, Benjamin, and Charles.

Then the 1850 Woodbridge census records Isabella when married to Joseph Dunham and shows her to be the right age to have been the younger of Charles' two daughters. That census page also records a John Jackson (b. 1825, the right age to be Charles son) with wife Abigail (b. 1832) and an Andrew Jackson (b. 1829) listed with property owner William Noe (b. 1810) a few houses from Isabella and Joseph Dunham. Notably, Isabella and Joseph's household includes a teenager, Moses F. Jackson (b. 1837). Then again In 1865, Isabella gave birth to Andrew Jackson Dunham. Unfortunately, the relationship of these Jacksons in the 1850 census is not documented.

I have not yet seen any more records from Friends Meetings referencing the children of James and Mary Jackson of Woodbridge to ascertain this lineage. Did they leave the Society of Friends? Could this Charles, son of James and Mary, also be the Tavernkeeper AND the younger Charles' father? Was the younger Charles yet in his mother's womb at home when the Tories raided?

Perhaps someone on this message board has seen other records to indicate what happened to any of these descendants of James and Mary. Please let me know if there is anything you may have found that could clarify any of this.

Thank you,
Doug Wilson
