Hi Victoria,
Re: Mary Thorne vs. Mary Fitz Randolph
Thanks for the Thorne site URL. I've been poking around for documentation there and elsewhere and have yet to find anything to substantiate the commonly published marriages and dates. Your hypothesis the Mary's are one in the same is looking very interesting.
Re: Jackson line
Using census records, I've traced the descendants of my earliest proved Jackson ancestor, Jesse b. abt. 1800. Jesse may have been James Jackson's great-grandson primarily because I find few Jacksons in Woodbridge at that time.
Unfortunately, The census shows me that Jesse's line runs out of males with surname Jackson to test for DNA evidence.
Re: Margaret and Moses Tichenor
I note that some of the Morris County Jacksons also moved to WV. The closest Margaret noted in that line at the Jackson site is 30 years later than yours. James' daughter seems to be of the right age. But I've seen no evidence to prove this marriage.
I do find a note for Moses in a tree posted at ancestry.com (no contact given) that does not provide Mary Jackson's father's name but does cite a book - Tichenor Families in America by Harold Tichenor, 1988 (see http://www.haroldtichenor.com/tichgen.html).
In case you or others have not yet seen some of this info, I've posted the note below.
Hope this helps,
Doug
ID: I0862
Name: Moses TICHENAL 1 2
Sex: M
Birth: BEF. 29 APR 1743 in Morristown, New Jersey
Death: ABT. 1796 in Allegany County, MD
Note:
Moses Tichenor was baptized April 29, 1743 at Morristown Presbyterian Church, Morristown, Morris County, New Jesey. He was willed 51 acres in Morris County by his father. On April 1, 1771, Moses Tichenor sold two tracts in Morristown. One tract of 24.7 acres "where on the Moses Tichenor now lives" and adjacent to a road on the east side of Pine Brook. The other tract of 25.5 acres was adjacent to Pine Brook and was described as "being part of the tract known by the name of Turkey Pasture."
In Sept. 1779, Moses Tichenal bought 567 acres in two tracts on Cabbin Run in Hampshire County, VA. His residence given in the deed was Morris County, NJ. He sold the land in 1783 at which time his residence was Washington County, MD. At that time, Washington County included what is now Allegany and Garrett Counties. Also, In July 1792 he sold 180 acres on the "north branch of Potowmack" in Hampshire County which he had purchased in July 1789. His residence given in the deed was Hampshire County. In the same month, he purchased 300 acres on the Salt Rock Fork of Sandy in Garrett County, MD. His residence given in the deed was Allegany County. In 1792, he bought 52 acres in Allegany (now Garrett Co.) known as "Aaron's Lot" located a little above the mouth of the Savage River. One of these tracts was probably his residence after that date.
He sold a tract of 7 1/2 acres in Allegany County near the mouth of Gum Spring Run, a sawmill to be built and a coal mine to be operated on it, the deed dated 1794. It was to be jointly owned by the grantee and Moses, each to have half interest. At the time of his death, he owned 268 acres.
He served in the Revolutionary War. He was listed in Captain Layton's Company of Morris County, NJ Militia in 1778 and was drafted into the VA Militia for a tour of duty to guard the prisoners taken at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. The prisoners were confined in Frederick County, VA. His son, David, was enrolled as a substitute and served from Nov. or Dec. in 1781 until March 12, 1782.
The spelling of Moses Tichenor's name varies from the time he left New Jersey, but he evidently used the spelling Tichenal. While no record of his name with that spelling has been found in New Jersey, there is one Morris County deed for his brother, Daniel, spelled Tichenal. Martin Tichenor's name ended in "L" in several instances in New Haven Colony records, and in a few cases his son's names in Newark also end with "L". The spelling, therefore, has a basis in family history. Several spellings ending in one or two "L's" are in use today by Moses' descendants and, as far as is known, none spell their name Tichenor.
The administration papers that have survived of Moses Tichenor's estate mention - but do not name - his widow. It names sons-in-law John Smith, Henry Duckworth, and Thomas Pritchard, the latter being the guardian of Moses' children Stephen, Margaret, and Jane, who were named as minors. Also named were grandchildren Betsey and William Smith with John Smith as their guardian.
The foregoing was taken from Tichenor Families in America by Harold Tichenor, 1988. The book was published in Napton, MO. The telephone number cited for its purchase is (816) 886-3102.
