Is there anyone on this message board heavily into Hunterdon County Rockefeller research or knowledgable of resources I may have overlooked?

My gg-grandfather Jacob Johnson died in Hunterdon Co in 1882, at age 72 years. On his death certificate he was listed as a life long resident of New Jersey and his father and mother are listed as Charles and Sarah Johnson. The only marriage I've found of a Charles and Sarah that fit is a Charles Johnson and Sarah Rockafellow both of Amwell township, Hunterdon Co., who married in 1802, 8 years before my gg-grandfather's birth. In fact, an online familytreemaker tree I found lists Charles and Sarah Rockafellow Johnson as the parents of my Jacob. Of course, it includes no documentation. Nor can the creator of the site be contacted.

The 1910 book "Rockefeller Genealogy IV" by Dr. Henry Oscar Rockefelller of the Rockefeller Family Association lists in its index about 60 Sarah Rockefellers. Only 1 of those Sarahs was born early enough to have married in 1802 and she was the daughter of William and Magdalena Quick Rockefeller of Amwell Twp., Hunterdon County. Sarah is listed without a date of birth or death and a marriage is not indicated.

I would love to be able to prove or disprove Sarah and Charles as the parents of my gg-grandfather Jacob Johnson and also to prove her parents. I don't know the parents of Charles either.

Any input or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Rich Lowe

According to the Obituary Daily Times, the obit you need appeared in the The Times (Trenton) on 20 and 22 November 1999.

Mr. Gunn was from East Amwell, but that is not where the newspaper was located.

The online archive for the Times only goes back to 2002. Trenton is actually in Mercer County, so you might post there.

I would imagine that the obit also appeared in the Hunterdon County Democrat (Flemington), which is a smaller paper and might have more detail.

Sorry, I can't help you directly as I don't live in NJ at present.

Rockefellers and Johnsons in Hunterdon County

Emma Jane Johnson, 14 yr old daughter of my gg-grandparents Jacob and Elizabeth Hann Johnson (married 1843), is buried at Mt. Airy cemetery, Hunterdon County New Jersey. Her Johnson grandparents (proven by death certificate of her father Jacob) were Charles and Sarah Rockafellow Johnson, burial place unknown. Buried near by Emma Jane are George Johnson 1781-1831, Eliza Johnson 1781-1828 and their children Eliza 1807-1817 and William d. 1812 age 2 mo. Also four small unreadable gravestones directly next to Emma Jane between her and the above identified Johnsons. I am trying to determine the relationship of Emma Jane Johnson to George and Elizabeth. Marriage records show a George Johnson marrying an Elizabeth Rockefeller in Hunterdon Co., in 1798. Is this the Mount Airy Cemetery couple? The earlier mentioned grandparents of Emma Jane, Charles Johnson and Sarah Rockafellow, married in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co in 1802. Could George and Charles Johnson have been brothers who married sisters Elizabeth and Sarah Rockefeller? If anyone is familiar with these families, I would very much appreciate your input. Emma Jane Johnson http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72... George Johnson http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72... Eliza Johnson http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72... Johnson Row (those labeled "unknown" should have been labeled "unreadable" http://image2.findagrave.com/photos/2013/83/72578791_1364210... Thanks for any help.
Woolf Rd

It appears that the Woolf family inhabiting what is now Woolf Road occurred after Permelia (Beers) Woolf (1798-1876) passed away. I do believe she lived in Warren County her entire life. Older records show husband George Woolf lived in Harmony his entire life, too. Genealogists have indicated they lived on Montana Mountain. 1830 census shows Greenwich, 1850, 1870 and 1880 censuses show Harmony (which may be the same place if the townships had a spin-off). Looking at an 1874 map of Harmony Township I do see three Woolfs as property owners living in the southern section: Geo Wolfe, H Wolfe and J Wolfe:
http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/18463/Harmony/Warren+...
This coincides nicely with the 1870 census showing George and Permelia in one household (ages 75 and 72), right next door is Peter Unangst and family with John Woolf on the other side. The map shows M Housemun next door, then J Wolfe as the next homeowner. The census shows Michal Housel as the next resident then Smith and Sleveton households. No H Wolfe showing up. The 1880 census shows John Woolf still next to Peter Unangst but a different family on the other side of Unangst (Charles Scott), then a couple doors down, going the other way, from John Woolf is Henry Woolf and family, including his father George. One can assume that after the passing of Permelia in 1876 George sold his house and moved in with his son Henry who bought his house after the 1870 census but before the 1874 map.
Jumping ahead to the 1900 census David, Benjamin and Allen Woolf all appear on the same page of Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County. David and Benjamin owning farms next to each other and Allen renting a few doors down. Benjamin is the son of David. Allen is David’s nephew (father John died in 1888). This is most likely located on what is now called Woolf Rd. My mother recalls her relatives owning farms just east of the intersection of Routes 579 and 614 in Pattenburg which would be in the area of Woolf Rd.

UPDATE: I am finding out Now these Woolf's lived a bit further west, in Spring Mills, not on Woolf Rd. See the photo here for farm location: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=42...
I'll have to edit my post once I know more info.

Of all the Dalrymples who emigrated to America one family is unique in its DNA - and that is the Dalrymple family in New Jersey in the 18th Century. All other Dalrymples in America are DNA related to some degree but not us ! Our Dalrymple family emigrated from the Townland of Dunamore in Northern Ireland between 1684 and 1737 to New Jersey. The Dalrymple's of Stair were active legally - and as land owners in New Jersey also from 1684 to 1747 through their attorney ! We are searching for male Dalrymples in America as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland for free Y-DNA testing in order to promote research on our Dalrymple / Walker families of New Jersey. Also looking for the related Walker family who went to Loudoun Co., VA before 1757. Please respond to: DalrympleWalkerDNAResearch@yahoo.com
It looks like the Old School Baptist Cemetery is located near the Locktown Stone Church Cemetery (where my ancestories are buried, including Rev. Thomas Curtis) which is a bit southeast of the Route 12 and 519 intersection where Locktown Sergeantsville Road and Locktown Kingwood Rd intersect: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GRid=93...; .
I was there a year ago and couldn’t find the cemetery, but now that I take the time to read the findagrave description I see the cemetery is around the corner from the stone church, perhaps 100 yard west along the creek. I think I remember reading a small church was build of wood in Locktown for those that did not want to travel up to Baptistown for services in the mid 1700s before the stone church several yards away was build in 1814. That would explain why the cemetery is a distance from the current church location. I think mention of the original location was in the book "Baptists in Kingwood" by Stephen Zdepski (nonreference at the Hunterdon County Library).
The other Baptistown Church Cemetery is located where Al says, just north of Rt 12 on Route 519.
Posted here, but the map embedded on that page is wrong: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=19...;
Looking for relatives of Manford White or Marie McDonald!

Hello! My name is Taylor Rattray. I started researching my ancestry upon knowing my maternal grandmother spent her time since birth in foster care. All she knows about her birth parents are their names: Manford White and Marie McDonald. She also knows their ethnicities. Manford White is believed to be of Northern European decent, while her mother was a mix between Black and Caucasian.

My grandmother was born in 1947, when likely such a union would be frowned upon. While it no longer exists, the hospital she was born in was in Hunterdon County. She has no idea where they went afterwards, or if they are even still alive. My grandmother shares her name with her mother--she is also Marie McDonald.

If anyone has any information about either of these two people, please let me know. It would mean a lot to our family.

My guess is the 1759 House Vought may have been the only Loyalist in their family. That was the case for my Pickel ancestors. My 6th great grandfather, Conrad Pickel lived a bit east of Vought and was involved with distributing Vought’s property that was seized by Captain Thomas Jones, so I know he must have been a Patriot, but his nephew, Nicholas, was a Loyalist and had to flee to Canada, also.
The Somerset County Library is on Vogt Drive in Bridgewater. If you aren’t connect to Simon Vought/Vogt and the other New Germantown Voughts maybe you’ll want to see where the name of that street came from. Perhaps your line can be connected to that Vogt.
Thanks for the reply. I have seen the info on the Voughts in Clinton and the 1759 house. That's a great website! They are probably related somehow, but I don't see any relations in the book. They were Loyalists, and my Vokes and Heaths were definitely on the American side. There are still many Heaths in Hunterdon County.
Vought (Vogt) is a name that arrived in Hunterdon in the early 1700s, settling in the Tewkesbury area (New Germantown). One Vought moved to Lebanon (which is now Clinton Township) and his home is currently being preserved. I have found a book in publication (at the county library but also is available on-line) which traces the Vought (Vogt) line to the Palentines. The house in Clinton Township is currently undergoing restoration and is posted here with family history and links: http://www.1759house.org/Family_History.html . The Clinton Township Vought moved north (Canada/upstate NY) after the Revolutionary War, but I imagine you could be connected to other family members. You might find the Greenwich Township Voke is connected to the Vought that settled in New Germantown nearly 100 years earlier.
The Heath family also dates back to pre-Revolutionary War as far as presence in Hunterdon County, mostly in Kingwood Township. My mother has been a childhood friend of a Heath that I think grew up about 15 miles north, in the Spring Mills area of Holland Township.
Like RB343 I have an ancestor with Rodenbaugh as a middle name, which was his mother’s maiden name. Info on her has been posted here: http://www.fieldgenealogy.com/p972.htm#i31697 . Her father was Herbert Rodenbaugh (1759-1823) living in Bethlehem and Tewkesbury Townships in Hunterdon County which I have posted here: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/40256545/person/19488879291
I have an 1851 map that shows M. Rodenbough owned property a few miles north of Pittsown which could have been one of Herbert’s children.
As far as Manning I knew of a few in the High Bridge and Annandale area. Donald Manning was the mayor of High Bridge in the early 1970’s and had a farm on Dewey Ave. I asked a descendent of the Annandale Manning if he was related to the High Bridge mayor and he did not believe he was.
Lived in Stewartsville, Warren County in the 1870s then moved to Holland Township, Hunterdon after that, which borders Pattenburg. I do not have any information as far as her parents or siblings. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a direct descendent of your ancestors. Perhaps daughter or sister of your Joseph Kimenhour. I have seen her last name spelled a few different ways.

It is interesting to see Wendy post a marriage of her greatgrandparents named Beers and Wolf. Going up my tree I have a marriage between a Beers and Woolf, also. That was nearly 100 years prior and in Warren County, a few miles north of Hunterdon County. That line has kept the spelling Woolf, for the most part. Besides being posted by myself and others here that line is posted: http://genforum.genealogy.com/woolf/messages/59.html
I looked in my Woolf tree and don’t see any Lucys. My Woolf line mostly lived around Harmony in the 1800s with several moving to Holland Township, Hunterdon, while others stayed in the Harmony area, where several decedents remain. Likewise with Beers, as there are currently several Beers in the Holland Township area. I know there were/are several that spell it Wolf coming from the Flemington area. If you have tried Googling “Samuel M Beers and Lucy Wolf” maybe also try different spellings: Woolf, Wolfe and you might find somebody with the information you are looking for.
I’ll keep an eye open for Samuel and Lucy mentions and will contact Wendy if I stumble upon something.
Last week I checked out a book from the Hunterdon County Library
“Baptists in Kingwood, New Jersey” by Stephen Zdepski. Published in 1974.
“A history of the Kingwood Baptist Church at Baptistown and Locktown and the present Baptistown Baptist Church,” I looked online for that book and don’t see an online version.
It tells how Thomas Curtis and others began a Baptist settlement in Kingwood (known as Bethlehem back then before Kingwood was spun off). They were members of the Hopewell Baptist church and wanted to start up another location closer to their homes in the Kingwood area. They started plans to build a Baptist meeting house in 1741 and then the church was built in 1742. Curtis became ordained at the Hopewell Baptist Church Oct 28, 1745. Soon after a location they got the Kingwood location going they started up another location a few miles south in the area now known as Locktown. Rev. Curtis split his time, preaching at the Locktown location once every three weeks. Andrew Bray became the ordaining ruler of the Locktown location in 1747.
Somebody typed a brief excerpt here: http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/NJHUNTER/2003-02/104609...
Some history here: http://www.locktownstonechurch.org/church.htm
Articles about Thomas Curtis and his involvement with the Kingwood Baptist Church here:
http://www.fridley.net/arb/arbv2n1.pdf and http://www.fridley.net/arb/arbv2n2.pdf .
They do not make any mention of the Locktown congregation, though.
I also have read that the name Locktown derived from the more conservative parishioners locked out of the church by the less conservative parishioners. But I wonder if the name could have initially named after William Lock, as I have also read that elsewhere. My guess it after William Lock and maybe several decades later people speculated the name came from the padlocks and that story stuck. I don’t see anything about William Lock being connected to the Locktown Baptist Church in that book or other information on the two churches, but I recall that name as being an early settler in that area.
There are books that have been published for different towns all over the country that contain old photos (I'm sure you've seen them--the covers are brownish in color with an old photo on front). I know there's one for Lambertville, and I think there may be one for Stockton and New Hope as well. If you are local to NJ or PA, you can look through them at a library or book store to see if any photos are similar.

It appears the shaving parlor may also have been a store. I looked through the 1900 census for Stockton. There were two barbers listed:

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7602&pa...=

I doubt that the date was improperly recorded. The records of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown date to 1742. Although I sent a copy of the book which was published of these records in the 1880's, I have also seen originals of these records (though not of that particular page).

By 1775, the records were very well kept. Spelling was a little flexible, of course.

Sharon

Morris County was a part of Hunterdon County until 1739. Maybe the county or date was incorrectly recorded?

This is a photograph made from a glass negative that I have inherited. All of the photos seem to have been taken around 1903 in and around the New Hope (PA) - Lambertville (NJ) area. I'm wondering if this is a photo from the 1903 train wreck near Trenton. Can anyone shed some light on the photo?

I know it's been a few years since your posting in 2007, but just wanted to mention that I, too, have relatives buried at St. Ann's in Hampton (formerly Junction). My paternal Gt-Grandfather Wm Fitzgibbon (former Justice of the Peace in Junction), donated (we were told) a large section of land to the cemetery, which backed up to the rear of his home. My maternal Gt-Grandmother is also buried at St. Ann's, in an unmarked grave. Several decades ago, one of my Aunt's received a letter from St. Ann's confirming that burial, providing name and date. However, when I myself visited the Office of St. Ann's it was obvious that things had changed. No records were available and not much of an explanation was provided, except that 'they are too fragile.' I could not understand why no attempt was being made to seek a volunteer who might photograph whatever was left of these records. Obviously, they will eventually disintegrate completely, so why not handle them now, to obtain a digital image. Very frustrating.

I don't live anywhere near New Jersey and so can imagine trying it out. Not only that, I'm not even sure they were married there! So good luck in your own travels!!!!
