From what I can tell, there is a line of McKINNEY that set up in Hunterdon Co, NJ 1600s-1800s. Many/most headed south. Some headed PA-ward. I'm looking for some that moved down into Orange Co, NY, I *think*, by 1790 there was a Charles.

1800 census index had Charles again (on the same page as one of my HILL ancestors) and these other given names: Arthur, James, Matthew and possibles William McKINLEY, Stephen McKINSTRY.

1810 Orange Co: McKINNEY, Arthur & James; McKINNY, Charles; McKINLEY, Margaret & Rebeccah; McKENNA, Timothy. I did not find Matthew on 1810 index; wonder where Matthew went - I'd at first thought maybe the War of 1812-14 might have been the event to move 'im. He could be living with family or in-laws I suppose. Or maybe that one died?

1820 Orange Co. Montgomery twp Samuel McKENSTRY; Ichabod McKENY; James & Benjamin McKENNY. Wallkill twp (home twp for HILL et al) has Timothy McKINNEY and William McKENNEY.

My ancestor was a John McKINNEY b NY about 1798 first found on census 1820 NY Tioga (later Chemung) Co, Catharine twp (which is now in Schuyler Co). Later censuses found him at Veteran Tioga/Chemung County. His wife was Prudence COOK b abt 1786. (I suspect Pru was an older widow with children.)

Can any McKINNEY researcher out there sort my John (and probably Matthew) up with a NJ branch, maybe with Charles in the line?

I do have a little more info, for instance John was a carpenter, probably made furniture too. His son Augustus was also, and built squared-log houses "from scratch" - I've seen one.
