I tried finding him in PA on the 1850 and tried all spellings and never found him. Just because he was in school ... or should have been, at that time doesn't mean he wouldn't appear on the census.

The ONLY person I could find anywhere that looked like a George Lummis to me is this one (although it is indexed as George LEWINS). The age and birth state are correct at least:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

He's listed as 21 and a laborer. I couldn't find anything else in 1850 in either NJ or PA (or any other state).

Joan

I just took a look at the census for LUMMIS/LOOMIS families in NJ about the time that George would have been born 1828-1830ish. There were families by this name in Cumberland County, Gloucester County (the part of Gloucester that later was in Camden County) and a few stragglers in Salem County. None have a son named George living with them by 1850. Three of them on the 1840 census had a male child of the right age group to have been born when George was born--including the one in Camden, Gloucester County.

Any idea who the kids are in the household with George on the 1860 census in Philly? That might be a clue.

Joan

Not really. I was informed that there were members of the Lummis/Loomis family living in Gloucester County. Since Dr. Lummis was born in New Jersey, went to the University of Pennsylvania Medical school, served in a Pennsylvania regiment in the Civil War, and died in Philadelphia it would seem to fit that he was probably from the South Jersey area.

Just a hunch.

Bob

There is a Newtown, NJ in Middlesex County. Never heard of Newtown in Gloucester County.

There used to be a Newton Township in what was once part of Gloucester County but is now part of Camden County after that county was formed...perhaps it is Newton and not Newtown? if you are sure it is Newtown...try Middlesex County. The old Newton Township in the current Camden County encompassed the area that is now around Collingswood and Haddon Township.

Joan

I am trying to track down the grave of Dr. George B. Lummis/Loomis who died 12/4/1866 in Philadelphia, PA. He was born ~1828 in New Jersey and was supposed to have been buried in Newtown, NJ according to his Philadelphia death record

I understand that there is a Newtown in Gloucester County, but it doesn't come up on Mapquest as a viable town. My guess is that it is a place name within another township there.

I also understand that there were members of the Lummis/Loomis family living in Gloucester County back in the 1700-1800's.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Bob

I see this posting is from 2005, so hopefully you've got it all sorted out, but I thought I'd add my two cents. I am interested in Elizabeth "Leze" Thorn(e)Hugg Price Smith due to her 3rd and final marriage to Daniel Smith, my 5-g grandfather. My information on her comes from three sources: Haddonfield MM minutes; Samuel Mickle's diary; NJ Archive. Here is what I have on her:

Born abt 1731(based on age at date of death in SM diary); Married Samuel Hugg 15 Apr 1761(NJ Archive); Disowned by Haddonfield MM for marriage out of unity 5mo 11d 1761 (MM minutes); Married Robert Friend Price 6 Aug 1766 (NJ Archive: all her children were with him per wills in NJ Archive); Marriage to Daniel Smith aft 1 Aug 1782 and bef 12m 27d 1792 (based on death date of husband and notation in SM diary); Funeral 4m 15d 1806 (per SM diary).

Carol

Not sure what makes you think that Margary and Leze were half sisters: please enlighten me. In a 20 Feb 1806 notation in Samuel Mickle's diary, he makes clear that "Leze" is his mother-in-law. "Leze" appears to be the "Liza", wife of Robert Friend Price, referred to in his will. The will also makes clear that Margary, wife of Samuel Mickle, is the daughter of Robert Friend Price.

I couldn't locate any obit in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Also was not able to locate a Patrick Mullen of the approximate age in Gloucester, NJ in 1920 census. By the way, Gloucester City, NJ is in Camden County NJ, not in Gloucester County. Confusing isn't it? I am guessing they are referring to the city and not the county below.

I am guessing you might have the following article also listed in the Trenton Times:

Feb 3, 1922 – Jersey Journal (Jersey City, NJ)
JERSEY MAN DIES AFTER AUTO CRASH:
New Brunswick, Feb 3, Patrick Mullen, 43 of Gloucester, died yesterday at St Peter’s Hospital of injuries received Wednesday night when his automobile collided with a trolley car.
Hi Joe! Long time since we communicated. I just ran across a Rosanna Emmel Schenck who was married to James W. Schenck. Her birthdate is 02/09/1829 and she died in 1888. They had a son named Philip but my guess is that this is a granddaughter of the Rosanna your looking for. I found a gal by the name of AnnMarsh64 (her ancestry.com link) who has a family tree...Marsh, Gale, Lott, Hand, Schenck. Found the Emmel's there. This could help me connect with my John Estelow who was in Weymouth 1811 and married a Schenck. I'm still dead in the water on this one.
Hello Jaqui,

It has been a while since I heard from you, so thought I would write again.

The William J. Childs that married Emily Wood, is a descendent of William J. Childs born 1802 in Philadelphia. He is my gggggrandfather. His grandfather, was John Child (most people name Child who came to US added the s to the name) who came from England in 1782. We do not know what county he was from originally! Some of the cousins have put him from Derbyshire, and Chris Watson, told me her father said they were from Yorkshire! Honestly, we have no proof of the county where our Childs lived before coming to Philadelphia.

Did you ever hear that the Childs were from Yorkshire from your father???

Thank you for any help you can give.

Betty
Sorry forgot to mention that Verna appears on the 1930 and 1940 US census with Edward and Eva Greiss. Edward was a butcher in a meat market in 1930. There is also a picture of Verna in her school year book in 1940 when she was 16. Jaqui
