Michael:

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.

Look at the following records in the 1900 census.

The Valentine Schneider who married Tina/Dina was a MACHINIST. He was born Aug 1863.

The Valentine Schneider who married Theresa was a TAILOR. He was born February 1862.

These are two different men.

The TAILOR was living Brooklyn, NY in 1888/1892.

The MACHINIST was living in Newark in the 1890 city directory.

The MACHINIST had two sons: Emil July 1888 and Valentine December 1889.

The Valentine Schneider who died in April 1964 (and is buried at Gate of Heaven in Morris County) was born 18 December 1889 (see SSDI). Therefore, he is the son of Valentine, the MACHINIST, and his wife Tina.

Valentine the TAILOR and his wife Theresa were found in the 1940 census in Newark, and in the 1941 city directory. Family trees on Ancestry show a Valentine Schneider, wife Theresa, died 22 May 1945 in Newark. Some of these trees list his parents as Michael and Anna Schmidt. However, IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT ANY OF THESE RESEACHERS ACTUALLY GOT THAT DEATH CERTIFICATE. I suggest that you do that. You may find that the TAILOR is the wrong man. If so, you can eliminate him from the equation.

The last record I can find for Valentine the MACHINIST in Newark is the 1930 census. He was living at 11 Lentz Street.

I believe your man is more likely to the the MACHINIST since his birth date on the 1900 census matches what you already have from a family source.

Sharon

I agree, once again. This Valentine/Dina have USA arrival times that are close to the other Schneider/Snyder siblings who settled in western PA/eastern OH. Just wish I could find the place and dates of death. I could then try to locate and obit or DC.

I think that Valentine Schneider is the son of Valentine and Tina. Birth record b. 18 Dec 1889.

The Valentine (son of V. and Theresa) was born in 1898.

There is also a Valentine Schneider, died April 1964, buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Morris County. Unfortunately, the database of the Archdiocese does not list date of birth, but you could contact them for more detail.

http://www.rcancem.org/deceased/index.php?fn=v&ln=schnei...

The 1900 census that the previous poster mentioned actually provides the month and year of birth.

The Valentine Schneider who was married to Dina/Tina was a machinist. His date of birth in 1900 census is August 1863.

The Valentine Schneider that the other poster mentioned was married to Theresa, he was a tailor. The 1900 census gives his birth date as February 1862.

I understand your not wanting to pin your whole case on just this record, but for the moment, Valentine the machinist looks the most promising.

So far the latest record I have found for Valentine, the machinist, in Newark is the 1930 city directory when he was living at 11 Lentz St.

Now you see my problem.

There were two Valentine Schneider's residing in Newark during the same time period. One was married to Theresa, the other to Dina (Hellriegel). I do know from German church records that "my" Valentine was born 30 Aug 1863, Bad Bruckenau (now Kissingen)Germany. I have been going with the Dina (Tina, Eva) Hellriegel. They had two sons, Valentine and Emil. Bothe Valentines had sons named Valentine.

The only info I have is from sibling obits in PA that indicate Valentine resided in Newark. They were Catholic, so are likely to be in one of the many Catholic cemeteries in Newark area. If you can shed any light on these relationships I would be appreciative. I don't know dates of death, therefore, it is impossible to order death certificates or obits.

Thanks

According to the 1900 census, Valentin (b 1863 Germany) and Theresa (b. 1865 Switzerland) were living in Newark NJ with their 3 sons: Charles (b. 1888), Albert (b. 1894) and Valentine (b 1897). Valentin and Theresa were married in 1884 in NJ. In 1940 they were still living in Newark, NJ. Son Valentine died in Oct. 1969. He is buried in the Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls, NJ.
I hope this helps in your search.
Barbara

Hi

I'm looking for information about my Great Uncle Matthew (Mattie) McManus and any family members.

Matthew was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the UK in 1888. He was a carpenter by trade. In 1921 he emigrated arriving in Quebec. In 1930 he was living in Irvington, Essex, New Jersey. By 1935 he was in Newark, New Jersey and I believe he was still there in 1942.

He married Mary Cooper in Hartlepool, UK in 1919. They had one child, Lawrence (1920)born in UK and at least 3 born in the US, Veronica (1923), Alfred (1934) and Joan (1935).

If anyone has any information about this family I would be very grateful if you could share.

Thanks

John

I see a notice of his death date and burial place: B. 1781 but no month or year. He died on May 10, 1867 and is buried
in Florence, St. Joseph County, Michigan. His parents are listed as Joseph Batterson & Rebakah Dodd. The 1850 census shows a Caleb Batterson, 67 years old, a farmer, born in NJ, with wife Betsey and four children from age 21 down to 13. It also lists a 7 year-old Mary McGee as a resident. There is another Batterson - Barrett - and his family listed directly below this entry.

In the 1860 census there is a Caleb Batterson, born in NJ, listed as being 76 years old, living in Florence, St. Joseph County Michigan. However, the wife and children's names are not the same as in the previous census. So far, I haven't been able to see an exact birthdate.

Meg Campbell Tharp

Hi,

I'm not sure how this will help you but I've found references to the church in the following places:

The Founders and Builders of the Oranges: Comprising a History of the Outlying District of Newark, Subsequently Known as Orange, and of the Later Internal Divisions, Viz.: South Orange, West Orange, and East Orange, 1666-1896 (published in 1896, Google eBooks, reference on page 198). The reverend in charge is listed as P.A. Wenzel.

In Sadliers' Catholic Directory, Almanac and Ordo from 1891 (page 315, Google eBooks) the church at the corner of Henry and Cone is listed as the German church of St. Venantius with the rev. being P.A. Wenzel.

On page 16 of the Wednesday, September 2, 1891 issue of the New York Times P.A. Wenzel is listed as the reverend at St. Venatu's in Orange.

In 1908, St. Venantius is listed at 135 Cone Street (The Official Catholic Directory and Clergy List, Volume 23).

There is a current St. Venantius in Orange, but it merged with St. Andrew Kim in 1983 and I think it goes by that name now: http://www.rcan.org/history/parishchronolist.htm and http://blogs.shu.edu/newarkchurches/archives/1290

Cone Street is now South Day Street. See this map of Orange from 1912, you can compare it to Google Maps: http://mapmaker.rutgers.edu/ESSEX_COUNTY/TheOranges_1912.jpg

Seton Hall University, a catholic university in the neighboring town of South Orange, says St. Venantius existed from 1886-1986. They hold some records from the 1970s and 1980s as well as interments beginning in 1912. However, they might know whether or not the church was actually called St. Winand's for a while, as it seems to have been, and where older records might be. They do not list a parish of St. Winand's as having existed: http://www.shu.edu/academics/libraries/archives/upload/Close...
Hi Sonmar197,
I would love a copy of whatever photo(s) you would feel comfortable sharing!

Henry and Julia married in Yorkville, Upper East side NYC in 1871 in a Lutheran Church.

Their children were born in Newark, Essex, NJ but must have been baptized in either the First German Luth. Ch. or the Third Dutch Ref. - would you happen to know which one??

I have 9 children (so far) for them.

My line is their first born, son, Henry, he married Amelia Zilliox. Amelia is my relative. Henry and Amelis married on 16 Dec. 1902 in St. Mary's RC Ch. Newark, Essex, NJ - I have the church entry. Witnesses were Philipp Zilliox et Tillie Krumeiede. The Priest even let one know that Henry was not Catholic, on one hand, as far as reseachering goes, is a good thing but to think about it, they were very into letting their notes be correct about illegit or the fact that one wasn't catholic.

I am happy to share all of the documents/information I have as well.

Please e-me at my personal e-mail add:
cooperkvrs@verizon.net, so we can swap info and attachments.

Thank you and have a great day!
kelly Vogel-Cooper

Hello,

According to the 1892 City Directory of Catholic Churches, there was a St Winand's Church in Orange, New Jersey on the corners of Henry St and Cone. I can't find any record of this church other than this listing. I'm trying to determine if my relatives were married there.

The other churches listed were Our Lady of the Valley, St John's, and St Mary's (Help of the Christians).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike
