My great grandparents were also David and Caroline Key. My grandfather was Linford Key, who was one of their 4 children. Linford Key had 1 child - Eugene Key (my father).

Linford Key died in Chicago, Ill. around 1923, my father was only 16 at the time. I've not been able to find a cementary for him, however. My grandmother, Julia Catherine (Fraser) Key, is buried in Forest Lawn, Glendale, California, as is my father and Julia's parents - Nettie and George Fraser.

Eugene Key (my father) was a college professor and writer of fiction books (in the early 1930s) and college textbooks in the 50s and 60s. His last book was published in January 1968, just prior to his death on February 1. (Type: Eugene George Key into your browser window and read more on my father.)

I am the youngest of Eugene Key's 5 children - Barbara.

The NJ State Archives in Trenton has the JP records on microfilm for many counties. Cumberland County is not one of them. The records, I believe, are still at Bridgeton.

My question is: Have any of you visited the Cumberland County clerk's office to examine these old records? I'm curious as to what they have.

I have found some gems at the state archives from other counties, and I'm hoping to get lucky and stumble upon some info at Bridgeton.

Gloucester County Historical Society has the actual old JP books that they will let you handle with protective gloves.

Cape May's JP records are on microfilm at Trenton. Sometimes it's just a record of one person suing another person for one dollar, but the names might help to pinpoint someone at a particular place at a particular time.

Thanks.

Center Grove is spelled Centre Grove. My G-GM Lizzie Stewart lived with her grandfather J Wesley Stewart in the 1870s. Centre Grove in the 1870s was in Fairfield Twp- now Lawrence Twp just SW of Millville, NJ. It's close to the Millville Airport in the area of where Cedar Ave crosses Buckshutem Rd and Ramah Rd and then where Hogbin Ave meets Cedar Ave on a point.

Jim I had the hair style in my head when I saw the picture of Julia. And I just remembered my first cousin has red hair. I wonder how many of our cousins did. My sister was blond as a child. I remember my cousin's two children where blond but most of us were plain brunettes Do you know when Musa and Alonzo died or where any of them are buried? I am missing dates for Eileen, Phebe, Francis and William other than census estimates I have ssdi's on the rest and birth records for Musa and Alonzo. I have not yet found a marriage record for them. Nor do I have information on the family beyond this point. I am hoping the 1940 census will be of some help but that is a few years off yet. Going back a generation, Musa had three younger sisters of which we knew little about Josephine, Sarah and Martha who my grandmothers 1st cousin remembered was given up at two weeks and was raised in Millville. She was the thirteenth known child born about the time of her mothers death. She would be too young to be in her nineties in 1952 to be Annie. All three of these sisters were younger than Musa. The others were all married. Anna Letts Horner was widowed in 1930 and I can account for seven children and know of at lest one surviving line possibly more. The rest of Musa's siblings were older. One Amanda, married James Tompkins a (glass blower) and lived in Millville. I don't know much of them. And a younger brother Daniel who also live at Millville and probably never married. If I had an idea of where they where buried I could have someone look for them. My family lived in Mt. Holly Burlington Co. So we did not get to know our Millville cousins but did know those who stayed in the general area (Mt. Holly, Ft. Dix-Pemberton, Chatsworth...) I was in touch with one of the Horners recently and I hope I can get back in touch with her some how. She may have come up with something since we last chatted. Thank you for all the stories they are always great to share and I think my immediate family would enjoy reading them and they might possibly shake loose a few memories.
Thank you again!
Jane

Hello Jane,
I have no knowledge about Rambo in the Key family. Your right that William "Bill" key was Alonzo and Musa's son. They had a son named Ernie (Ernest?) he is deceased. Tryphena Schenk was the sister of Herschel Schenk, a well known sign painter in Millville N.J. He had a son named Clayton. Herschel collected Indian Artifacts and had a large collection. Tryphena was a handsome woman she wore interesting glasses. She was in the Sarah Palin mold. Is that anyway to address my Great Aunt thrice removed?
I have also seen the name Letts as Lets, Lutz and Loetz. The last could be Dutch or perhaps Latvian Letts living in Holland. Musa was called by us kids, "Grandma reds". She still had Red Hair mixed with blondish grey. It was so long it was nearly down to her waist. She would sit every evening at her Walnut dresser and brush it, 100 strokes. Incidently she put it up every morning, in the Latvian or Ukrainian style. Google Julia Tymoshenko and you will see that hair style. There were ties between Western Ukraine and Latvia. My wife has relatives there, she visited while still a school girl. A possibility of names being mixed with Dutch and German is; Russia was invaded by the Teutonic Knights in the 11th Century. The name Loetz (With Germanic Spelling) could have entered what is Historical Latvia. I am sure there were what became Dutch, flemish and Begique in the Knights ranks. At that time most of the area was under the Kievan Rus; Ukraine. The Novogordians defeated the Germans, most of whom perished under the ice. A clain could be made that modern Russia began with this victory.
I did have some photographs of Musa. I will dig deap, world travel is not conducive to keeping such treasures. I never had a photo of Aunt Annie, in my minds eye she is still with me though. A wisp of a woman, kind and very proper. Although Musa would occasionally accuse her of cheating at Dominoes.
Jim

Thank you for all this wonderful information. Since I posted my last message I have found much in the way of documents and expect many in the coming months. I have heard the theories that the Letts may have descended from the Lettish people, a Germanic tribe from the Baltic area, but many still believe that they were Dutch. What we do know is that William Letts our families progenitor came from England and that there are many Letts families still thriving there. We also know that there were many lines in which the female lines can claim Dutch heritage. There are variations of the name from different countries who claim no relation at all but perhaps somewhere way back when... there might have been. I find many documents for Letts all over the US and when I try to trace them back in the census they are Litts or Lutz and may be from areas where the Progenitors where Dutch or German.
But for the Key family, do you know if there are any marriages in to the Rambo family? I have a document with this listed as Alonzo's middle name. As for Anna B. Letts she married Joseph Horner. There are many Horner's in our family and I am trying to determine how they might all be related. But I still can't say if your Aunt Annie is Actually Anna B. Letts Horner. The dates I have place her at about 92 when she died and whether that is correct or not I do not know yet. The SSDI lists her death as 1967 birth 1875 but there is no Application for her just what they call "E. R. action form" I am not sure what that is yet.
She and Musa would be descendant of at least one to two Horner lines separate form her children which might have about three Horner lines.
Do you have any early photo's of them I would be curious to see if they resemble the family photo I have. I am guessing that "Bill Key and Tryphena (Schenk) Key" Where Musa and Alonzo's son and daughter in law.
Musa, Annie and my great grandmother Sarah Jane Letts were first cousins. Feel free to contact me for more information on the Letts family. My research is not yet finished but far enough along to have solved many mysteries and corrected many mistakes that are still floating around out there.
Jane

My brother David H. Key reminded me about 40 years ago; that Grandma "Reds" (Musa Letts Key) made reference to the Letts family having come from the Baltic States. He thought it was Lithuania. Just an oral tradition....? Having lived in the Former Soviet Union, I find that Letts is a name often encountered in Latvia. Since it is next to Lithuania there could be some substance to the oral claim.
Unfortunately I don't know if my "Aunt Annie" was ever married. She would come to my Grandparents Home in Leesburg, N.J. and spend some months with her sister. They would play cards and Dominos, watch wrestling on TV. Aunt Annie weighed less than 100 pounds. I last saw her when I was beyween 13 and 15 years old. That would have been 1953 or so. I definitely know she was in her 90's then. I later heard she died at 99.5 years. Musa died at the home of Bill Key and Tryphena (Schenk) Key. I saw her the day before her death. She was my favorite relative. ("No wonder, your just like her!") She told me this: "If only I could live one more day.." She died of Breast Cancer. She had lesions for quite a long time. For her generation it was something too personal to talk about. I loved her then and even now that love brings a heaviness to my heart speaking of her. Memory; a fond memory was eating her yellow plum tomatoes. feasting on her home made bread. How fond it would be to go back to the 9 or 10 year old that I was. I would ask Annie many more things. Horner? I have a faint memory of that name but don't know the root of it

Hello Again, Al,
Unfortunately, that is the case in many old cemeteries, that the information on the tomb stones has been worn away over the years.

EDWARD is EDGAR, born in 1861. The given name is interchangeable. On the 1870 Census, his name is given as EDGAR, and on both the 1880 and the 1900 Census Records, his name is given as EDWARD. He is one and the same person. The widow, MARY MILLER, had both her sons, GEORGE MILLER & FAMILY and ANDREW MILLER & FAMILY living on either side of her. MARY was living with her son, EDWARD (EDGAR) and his wife, DEBORAH "DEBBY" and their two children, EDWARD, JR. & ADA and EDWARD's sister-in-law, MICA or MICHA SAYRE. Also residing with them in the same household was EDWARD's brother, CHARLES "CHARLEY" MILLER, still single at the taking of this census. On this 1900 Census, the widow, MARY MILLER, stated that she had 14 children and 11 were still living. The 11 children living were: JOHN, ANDREW, HARRIETT, CHRISTIANA, ADELINE, THOMAS H. (JR.), CHARLES, HORACE, JACOB, GEORGE & EDGAR/EDWARD.

I also noticed that on the 1880 Census, two doors away from THOMAS H. & MARY (JOHNSON) Miller, were a HARRIET JOHNSON, age 69, single, living with her sister, RACHEL JOHNSON, age 71, single, who had paralysis, both born in New Jersey. Possibly sisters or relatives of MARY (JOHNSON) MILLER?

I found marriage dates for ANDREW and I believe EDWARD. If you don't already have them, I will gladly look them up again, as I have the Cumberland County Marriages book by H. Stanley Craig. Also, if you don't have access to the 1900 Census, I can give you the birth months & years of the family members on that census, including the other two brothers and their wives and family members.

Hello Al,

I found the 1900 Census with Mary on it. Marital status is given as a widow, so her husband Thomas died before June 6, 1900. Her birth year is given as July 1817, and all census records from 1850 on, state that she was born in NJ. Also 1900 census says her parents were born in NJ. She is residing with her son, Edward, his wife and two grandchildren and her single son, Charles in Hopewell Twsp. PO is Deerfield Street. Perhaps they are buried in Deerfield, or since she is possibly from Salem Co., it may be that she and her husband are buried in that county with her family.

The Cumberland County Historical Society is located in Greenwich, not far from Bridgeton. I believe they are on-line. Perhaps they have burial records for the cemeteries in the area, or they could let you know where the cemetery office is located for the Broad Street Presbyterian Church. There is also a public library in Bridgeton, the county seat, which has a genealogy research room.

Sorry I couldn't give you direct answers to your questions. But hope this helps you some.

Well.. There are no records filed from Salem City until 1860 in book AD. Maybe they weren't reported or maybe they were filed somewhere else. If you look in the Elsinboro records from 1848-1860 they have about 10 marriages each year and if you see the 'where married' column, it says Salem.

This is the original filing. I have a copy of Book AD (1848-1867) which is Salem's BMD's for my own records for client research.

A lot of Millers in the area were from Hans Michael Muller (b.1709) who came from Germany and lived in Alloway Creek as Michael Miller. His son Michael married Margaret Shoemaker in 1756 and their kids were born in Mannington.

-andrea
www.ifinddeadpeople.com

Thomas H. Miller died 8 Jan 1892 in Hopwell Twp, Cumberland, NJ.

He was buried at Broad St Cemetery on January 11, 1892, in the NW section, lot 57. There is a notation by the sexton that says he's NW of the gravel road.

There's also a NNW section (I guess the first one wasn't north enough, ha!)

W. Read Elmer is in NW 27 and I've seen his stone.
the plot behind him is John McPherson who is NW 32. Then there are about 3 rows and then the 'gravel' road which is more dirt than gravel row.

I have a photo of W Read Elmer's stone with John Mc Pherson's in the background with the traffic light as well so you can see where you are. My guess is that Thomas Miller is in one of the plots bordering the road. You just need to write down the names around that area with deceased dates and then check their plot #'s to see how close you are.

-andrea
www.ifinddeadpeople.com
Salem certificates were usually with Elsinboro until the 1860's.. and I found Josiah's sister Millicent's marriage that was in Salem recorded in Elsinboro.. but I couldn't find them.

-andrea
www.ifinddeadpeople.com

Hi Amy,
Harmon Kruse Sr. died 18 Jul 1847 in Cumberland Co, NJ.

The Cumberland County records aren't scarce for that era. They just aren't in conventional form such as certifcates. You just have to know where to look :) I think they have Orphans Court records, etc.. at the FHL in SLC.

It just takes a LOT of time to go through them all, but you will find your answer. I mean every page, every index of every book. I think I'm up to Volume F of the Orphans Court minutes :) It takes me about 2 weeks per volume.

-andrea
www.ifinddeadpeople.com

I am in SLC at present, where I just confirmed that John Coleman and Harmon Kruse were in Maurice River Township of Cumberland County, NJ in 1879. This John Coleman and his family moved to Hamilton County, Ohio before 1810 and I descend from his son, Jacob. Unfortunately, Cumberland County records are scarce for that era. Let me know if you want to communicate more:
Amy Coleman Green amy_green@att.net

I have been looking for information on my birth mother. Have accomplished about all of it. The only thing that is missing is where and when she was married. The state of NJ wants to know the city and the date. If I knew that I would not need to try and find out from them. Know from looking at information that her mother in law lived in Cumberland Co. when the 1930 census was done. She married Stanley C. Jaggers. They had their first child in 1939. Her maiden name was Mary Ellen Crowe. She was born in West Virginia. If anyone has any suggestions about how to get information it would be greatly appreciated.

The History of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland Counties New Jersey by Cushing and Sheppard, pub. 1883 with a separate index pub. 1975 by Donald Sinclair, has many entries for the various families mentioned in this thread. Be willing to do sound alikes as there were not any hard and fast rules for spelling. For example, you need to check Crouse or Crose as well as Kraus, etc.

These volumes literally full of names from all sorts of civic and military lists,so a useful finding aid for the region. And if you can pin your people to a map, start looking for churches or cemeteries in the immediate vicinity. The historical societies in the several counties might have copies of those records now.

Hope this helps,
Val
Thanks. I originally had Joseph's birth year as 1849 but changed it when I found a birth certificate at familysearch.org.

Could you tell me what source your using to find the dates and names? The only birthdate of Mark's children that I had was Joseph's and I'd liked to fill in the others.

Any knowledge of Mary Adeline's maiden name? My family says it's either Madkiff or Midkiff, but I've found online a few listings as Woodruff, but no confirmations.

Is this the same Mark Adams who had children by second wife Rachel: Fanny, Mark, Samuel, Rachel, and Joseph.

If so, what is Joseph's (Joseph P. Adams born Jul 13, 1852) middle name? He's my third great grandfather. Joseph married May Adeline Madkiff/Woodruff and had three sons: Mark, Samuel, and Joseph(who also went by Herschel).
Glad to see your posting (even though a few years late on my part). The scanty information that I have shows 8 children for William and Ann Facemire Ireland, none of whom are named Zachariah, but instead a Zacheus b. abt 1854. Could these be one and the same? Thanks.

Barbara-
Do you have documentation verifying that George is the son of Christian and Martha Nesmith Facemire? The reason I ask is that according to "Christian Fesmire, A Family History 1752 - 1952", by Lloyd Fesmire, Christian and Martha only had five children; Eleanore, Johannes, Anna, Martha, and Christian. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

What I have been lead to believe as far a my Taylor/Garrison line is that 3 lines of Indian come in.One being Sioux. One of my Taylors married an indian maiden from bridgeton who I assumed was Elizbeth Garrison. My line is so confussing. If I were to find out the Indian lines I might be able to go forward with my tree.I once had a quick glance at an old diary that has since vanished.A few statements I remember "Taylor woman was taken by an Indian and the Indian man and children had her last name"."It's time for us to go to Taylor Camp again".Next to Taylor/Garrison name was "Yakota""Sitting Bull" and Lenape"Have not been able to find out which Taylor women and was her last name Taylor and where was this Taylor camp? What is Yakota? Was it met to say Lakota?I was told for years Souix never came as far east as NJ and no way this line could have Indian let alone Souix but I did find a census listing a whole group of Souix in NJ only they have Indian names so not much help.Every clue is appriciated.

Hello
I do know that the Garrison/Forman has Native American, Cherokee....
This is what I have in my tree...
Alice Garrison m a Taylor, no first name yet... can not get handle on the Taylor for some reason... they had my ggrandpa Raleigh (Rollo) Lewis Taylor, about 1880's... He married a Arvilla Hargrove, 1900, had a daughter my Grandma Ruth Alice Taylor... Now heres what I know also sometimes people name children for grandparents right so ..
Naomi Ruth Forman... Alice Garrison... Ruth Alice... me Catherine Ruth....
So I am reaching here about these names ... b years work too.
Rollo divorced Arvilla by 1910... After Ruth Alice birth 1905-1995... Taylor has been a needle in haystack so I am not sure whom or where only IN, IL, OR, WA... then he dies in San Joaquin Co., CA 1923...
I do know during my grandma time they did live in Umatilla Reservation in OR which also where my momma was born.... I am said to have Native American blood in me... For sure I am half Italian through my dad side...:)...
Since checking I have found some info on Forman side that I would be about little less than a quarter Cherokee... Cool
Again would love to know the Taylors... I know there's more about them somewhere, Rollo was a nickname....
Check out Johnson Foreman, interresting history....
See ya..
Kathy

It is an inexpensive and time efficient way to access all those thousands of name lists in this extensive history (partially written by my cousin,CES :)

It is in Adobe format, so you can use Adobe's built in ssearch to look for names too.

email me at dave@darefamily.com if you need the web site address where I got the CD from.

Hi Nancy,

My name is Dave McConnell and I believe I am a direct descendent of Samuel Cobb and Margaret Gominger. When my grandmother passed away in 2002 she left behind a written history of the entire family tree. I believe this may have come from the Rev Cobb you mention below. I have just in the past week started investigating this side of my family so there is a lot of verification to do however given the detail dates and names I have on my grandmother's papers I suspect most of it will check out.

Basically my grandmother's grandmother was Almira Cobb (brother to Dewitt) which makes her great grandmother Margaret Gominger. From the written records I have Margaret's parents were Joseph Gominger (born July 12 1784)and Anna Fried (born Aug 18th 1786 died approx 1880). Joseph's parents were Jacob Gominger who came to America from Germany (Died July 10 1803) and I belive Agnes Nil (but I am not sure about this).

How do you fit in here? Once I input all of the information into my software I can send you a file but it may be a few weeks yet.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Dave
