Classification: Biography
Surnames: Johnson, Miller
My great great grandfather John Johnson left his teaching job at the University (I believe it was Oxford)in Englnd and came to Salem NJ about the time they were establishing the Academy..Somewhere around 1835 or so I would guess (he was born in 1810 which showed up on a census about that time. Anyway around 1845 he took a job as controller for the city of Phila. and my great grandfather Richard Garsed Johnson was born there in Phila. but his other brothers and sister had been born in Salem and he travelled back there and met his wife Caroline Miller and they married there in Salem, then moved to Royersford,Pa. where he started the first Episcopal Church in his living room. His brother (two of whom became Episcopal priests)would travel up to have services on Sundays until Richard built the first church. It burned down several years later and only some original pews etc. were salvaged as they rebuilt. The thing of it is we can't find out where in England gg grandfather lived before he came here. We haven't been able to locate Richard's brothers Harry, Thomas and Albert or their families who might have more knowledge than we do.
