Patricia R. Grant wrote, in response to my post about S.F. Langley property deals:
"....curious about the David Garton, whether he may be of our line from Cumberland Co. James P. Garton was great grandfather, married a Sarah unknown.
-- David Garton -- Book 30, pg 54, June 14, 1864"

There was a popular high school teacher named "Gus" Garton during the 1960s in Millville (Cumberland County). But here are some much older occurrences of Gartons:
1. George Garton Loper III wrote a booklet, "The History of Pittsgrove Township, including the Centerton Inn and Elmer, " published by the Pittgrove Township Historical Society in 1994. I wonder where he got the Garton middle name? As of 1992, the author lived in Greenwich, Cumberland County, or you may want to contact the PTH Society at: (856)358-7103.
2. Cushing and Sheppard, in their History of the Counties of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland, pp. 464-471, included both Garton and Loper in the prominent families of Pittsgrove and Upper Pittsgrove between 1800-30.
3. Somewhere I got this stat: -- On 27 April, 1816, by the Rev. Nathaniel Reeve, Mr. Jonathan Garton, son of Ephriam, married Miss Betsy Souder, daughter of George, both of Deerfield.
4. The 1870 Census for Pittsgrove Twp. has David Garton next to Langleys I can't yet place:
-- Langley, John, 18 (b. 1852) works on farm, rents; Sarah 19 (1851) teacher; William F. Bateman, 5 (1865).
-- David S. Garton, 49 (b. 1821?), farm laborer but owns home, with Hepsey (?) Bateman, 48 as housekeeper. (b. 1822?)
I don't know if John and Sarah were married, or brother and sister, but I wonder what the Langley and Garton connection was, with Batemans? It seems odd that two teenagers would be raising a 5-year-old! Joel F. Langley (b. 1820) married Charlotte Bateman (b. 1841) but so far I can't connect her to little William, or what may be his mother or grandmother, above.
5. In 1870 Franklin Twp. (adjoining Pittsgrove) we find my Silas F. Langley (indexed as "Dempey" by HeritageQuest!) at age 45 , with wife and kids. Enumerated next to them are Charles and Josephine (?) Garton, ages 22 and 21, who rent; and Wm. Arnett, 24 and Rebecca, 22, who also rent, with sons James, 4 and Wm 2.
6. I find no Gartons buried at Porchtown (near route 40), but these are at Willow Grove:
Garton, Amanda H., b. 1839, d. 1907, wife of William R. Garton
Garton, David, d. 4-28-1875, aged 65y 2m, husb. of Rebecca Garton (b. 1810)
Garton, Edna, no dates
Garton, Laura, b. 1862, d. 1889, wife of F. C. Garton
Garton, Orla, no dates
Garton, Rebecca, d. 8-16-1873, aged 60y, wife of David Garton (b. 1813)
Garton, Vernon, no dates
Garton, William R., b. 1837, d. 1903, husb. of Amanda H. Garton
Unless I erred in copying the 1870 Census, the above David and Rebecca have the wrong birth years to be the 1870 neighbors. My HeritageQuest is "down" right now, but maybe you can access it.
