Archives in Trenton for death records go up to 1955. If you are able you can do a search there and look up the information. If you can't find it there then you can try PA. Good luck!

Long story-somewhat short

I am looking for records for my 4th great grandfather to prove his father's name. Any suggestions as where to go next? I know the information is on Anchestry, but I need documented proof.

Uriah Hewitt
Born 1804-no records in NJ for this date
marriage-1833 record in the NJ marriages, but doesn't show his parents name
death-1867-maybe in Cape May I can not find a death record in this year for him in the archives.

He was definately buried in Calvary Baptist Church in Cape May with a date on the tombstone. (find a grave)

The last record I have is 1860 census showing he lived in Cape May in Dennis.

Would the cemetery have any records of the parents name?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Yes and no. This is probably more than you need/want to know, but the original property held a rectory, convent and church/school. Sometime in the late 1950s early 1960s (I think) a new church, St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, was built a block away so that the old church became St. Ann's elementary school. There was also a church affiliated high school, Wildwood Catholic High School, about a mile or so away.

In the early 1970s a new elementary school was built next to the old school and the old church/school was knocked down. About 2 years ago, the new bishop decided to change the name of the parish and the elementary school. The new parish name is Notre Dame De la Mer and the elementary school is now known as Cape Trinity. The elementary school was moved to the same building as the high school due to low enrollment.

The priests were relocated from the old St. Ann's rectory to the neighboring parish and the few remaining nuns were moved from the old convent to the former rectory.

Last heard, the convent was still standing, but was in total disrepair. My guess is that the old convent will be sold and torn down in the not too distant future. I remember as a kid going over from the school to the convent to dust for the nuns.

If you're looking for records, I believe the parish offices are located at the high school. Notre Dame de la Mer Parish,
1500 Central Avenue, Suite 100, North Wildwood, NJ 08260
Phone: 609-522-2709.

I don't know of a St. Joseph's convent, but there was a convent next to St. Ann's Catholic School that housed the order of nuns known as the Sisters of St. Joseph. That convent was located on Glenwood Avenue between New Jersey and Pacific Avenues.

Hi Donna!
You contacted me last April about the Hansens on my posting. We spoke about the RR car, that was to be a restaurant that your Aunt Helen invested in, along with your Aunt Pearl and Aunt Mabel. Then you spoke of a Hansen Reunion you attended, at which a Dr. had a DVD he made containing Hansen genealogy and many family and ancestral pics.
I spoke with my sister-in-law about that Reunion, just recently. She said that she and her husband attended it at the Cape May County Park in CMCH at that time. The name of the Dr. you referred to, but couldn't remember his name, was Dr. Eric Hansen. My sister-in-law knew your Aunt Pearl and Aunt Mabel well. She had just spoken to Pearl a week before the fall, that resulted in Pearl's death. She told me that Pearl was outside hanging clothes on a line and tripped over the laundry basket on the ground, falling and severly hitting her head.

Godfrey was the daughter of Humphrey Corson and was born about 1811.
These are the 2 Lydia's I know about in that area.
I think that Lydia Corson Godfrey married Peter Corson after both of them were widowed, but I am still trying to prove that one.
Thanks so much for this suggestion! This was fantastic. Using social security death indexes, I was able to determine the month and year of a death of two of my ancestors then use this site to obtain the PDF's of that month's and year's newspaper. Once the PDF's were downloaded, I simply used Adobe's search function for the last name and immediately located by two ancestors. I was able to obtain their bios, burial locations, former addresses, occupations, and exact dates of death from this information. Thanks so much for this link!

I am looking for the obit, and an article about the accident would be icing on the cake.

Further information: He is buried at First Baptist Cemetery and Evoy has confirmed they did not handle the arrangements.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=+b...;

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Additional information: Radzieta Funeral Home handled Matthew Bock's funeral arrangements. His parents were Charles Henry Bock, Sr. and Vesta Lunny Bock. The obituary would have been in The Press of Atlantic City after November 11, 1982.

In my grandfather's photos, I found a couple pictures containing the CMHS Class of 1941. The first is a photo of the class at Mount Vernon (June 1941). There are no names on the photo, so you'd have to know who you were looking for here. I also have another photo with headshots of each student with their name below. This photo is damaged and has a corner missing (about 9 people missing). If anyone is interested in scanned copies send me a message with your email address.

Here are the names included in the 2nd photo:
Mildred Keeler
Charles Hickman(?)
??sa Walton
Edward Anthony
Joan Hodgson
Eugene Mariani
Jane Crawford
Charles Valdes
Angie Otter
Wallace Sheets
June Konowitch
George Smeltzer
Evelyn Wise
Walter Daebler
Peggy Shue
Robert Vain
Mildred Hawk
Ruth Norris
Dalton Pearson
Betty Claghorn
Leroy Pritchard
Margaretta Major
Hiram Washington
Millie Parrinello
John Thomas
Mary Collins
Marjorie Bell
Frank Rutherford
Felor Hamperian
James Shelton
Granville Harris
Irving Tenenbaum
Doris Edsall
Doris Taylor
Raymond Teitelman
Kay Ewing
Courtland Reeves
Mary Ann Stevens
Joseph Brewton
Beth Curtis
Hollis McPherson
Elsie Hallman
Charles Payne
Gladys Mathews
Bob Taylor
Betty Stewart
Julius Morton
Grace Smith
James Stevens
Doris Hoffman
Lillian Swain

Hi Mary,
I would like to gather information on the same Nathaniel Stites and I have a trip planned to Cape May in a few weeks for the day and thought I might be able to do some research. I am related to Phoebe Stites who is Nathaniel's daughter. I was born in Jefferesonville but have since moved to the east coast. My trip to Cape May was originally planned as a week visit to the Delaware coast with my mom until earlier this week when we discovered we may have relatives who lived there. Now a day on the Cape sounds interesting. Anyway, maybe we should talk? I don't have a plan yet on how to gather more info on him once I'm there but since they were married there I am guessing there is more to learn. I'm curious if you know of anything else about the Stites or Steelman's that may help direct me?

Hi Again, Donna,
The railroad car is no longer there, just the Mauricetown diner. It apparently was sold or removed when the diner was built a number of years ago. As I recall, the diner is north of the Rt. 47 by-pass of Old Stage Coach Road.
I don't think my niece's family knew about the Hansen Reunion back in 2000 or 2001, or they would have attended. Was it in NJ? If it's in NJ, I'm sure the family members would like to attend if another one is planned.
I did know that Pearl passed away. My sister-in-law knew her, as well as having known Mabel, who is also passed. Besides NJ, there are Hansen descendants in FLA, also in either NC or SC and Alaska, as well.
Having photos on a DVD would be fantastic for the Hansen descendants. More photos could be obtained, I'm sure, if this doctor would like to make another DVD. Will await your reply to my e-mail address.

The doctor that was doing the reunion pulled together lots of photos of the original Hansens and the descendants and put it all on a DVD. I will have to look into how to find him.

Donna Burnell

Thanks for the information about the railway car. I will check it out someday. I hope to get up there again soon. (I live in the Huntsville, Alabama, area.)My Aunt Pearl (Pennino) has passed away about 3 or 4 years ago(actually my great-aunt.) There was a Hansen descendant who was pulling together a Hansen reunion in the month of July. My mother, father, and I went to the first one. Maybe in 2000 or 2001? He was a doctor but I don't know his name and I don't know if it is still happening. I have received your email address and plan to reply but this is the end of the semester and I'm an adjunct professor trying to pull all of the grading and finals together.
Donna Burnell

Donna,

I believe the railway car that you were referring to was along Rt. 47, where the Mauricetown Diner now stands. I remember seeing it through the years and I always wondered why nothing was done with it. I met Pearl Pennino a number of years ago at her brother, Ed's viewing in his church.

So, your grandfather was Herbert Jr., and he was my maternal grandfather's half brother, and your mother would be my mother's half cousin? I have 5 children listed by Herbert Sr.(our great grandfather) and Anna Otten(I have May as her middle name). They are Wilbur, Herbert, Clifford, George, and Allen. The 7 children I have listed by him and Emily Lucy Scarlett (my Great Grandmother) are William, Robert, John, Edward, Joseph, Andrew (my grandfather), and Franklin who died at 2 years of age. I have another wife listed by the name of Harriet. With the exemption of the name of my grandfather, I got all this info from ancestry.com. Do you know why he gave up the kids? I would love to speak with you. Here is my e-mail as well a.cavatica@rocketmail.com.

Hi Andreana, my name is Susan and Herbert Sweeten was my great grandfather as well. He was married to Anna Mary Otten until her death at age 37 and they had 4 children, one of which was my grandfather, Herbert M. Sweeten. After Anna died, he married Emily and had another 8 children. We only recently found out about the other 8 children as my grandfather never would speak about his fathr or family because Herbert Sr, gave the youngest 2 up for adoption to the Hemminway family and the others went to live with relatives or out on their own and he started a new life. He was actually married 3 times. My grandfather, Herbert, married Violet Wilson and had my mother, Dorothy. I have a lot of Sweeten family history that was gathered by a very nice woman who was married to one of the adopted out sons, sons . I live in PA, just over the NJ border and am always in nj and work in nj. My email is markq350@comcast.net. Feel free to email me if you want to chat ;o) Look forward to hearing from you. Susan

It traces this Hewitt family in Cape May County,NJ back to the 1600's:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

---------------------------------
The following is a link to findagrave.com/ for cemetery record for Francis H Hewitt:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=He...;

Birth: Jul. 20, 1834
Cape May County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Aug. 12, 1865

Family links:
Parents:
Uriah Hewitt (1804 - 1867)
Mary Townsend Hewitt (1812 - 1895)

Spouse:
Julia Townsend Hewitt (1836 - 1908)*

Children:
Richard Townsend Hewitt (1857 - 1860)*
Edwin Francis Hewitt (1860 - 1904)*
*Calculated relationship

Burial:
Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery
Ocean View
Cape May County
New Jersey, USA

---------------------------------------
Have you sent away for the marriage record for Francis H Hewitt and Julia Townsend?
