WILLIAM RICE born 1805 married Parmelia ? They lived in Cape May County according to the 1850 Cape May Census.I am trying to find out who the parents were of both of these people. They had two children: William RICE b. April 24, 1831 and Parmelia (born approximately 1835).

WILLIAM RICE married Theodosia Hand (born May 1, 1834). Can anyone tell me who Theodosia's parents were?

Hello grice182,

I believe I have the information you are looking for, although, you may not agree with me.

Checking the Cape May County Marriage book by Craig, I came across two marriages for William Rice on page 58.

The first one, which is for William Rice (Sr.), is a marriage between William Rice and Amelia Godfrey, dated 7-31-1830. It is my belief that Amelia Godfrey is Parmelia. My reason for thinking this is because on the 1870 Census, William Rice (Sr.), age 70, is listed with an Amelia Young, age 30. As there are no relationships shown on this census, I feel that Amelia is William, Sr's daughter, and that she is possibly the wife or widow to a man with the surname of Young. You mentioned that William and Parmelia had a daughter named Parmelia, born approximately 1835. Amelia Young's approximate birthdate is 1840. All the ages on the census records that I found for William, Sr. were different. Errors on census records for age, birth place and name spellings are common. So it seems that the marriage info. that I found on Amelia Godfrey & William Rice and that of Amelia Young, the likely daughter of William & Parmelia Rice; both being named Amelia from Parmelia, possibly a nickname. There are also many Godfreys listed in Dennis Township and Upper Township of Cape May County. Another reason is the William (Sr.) & Parmelia's son, William Rice (Jr.) was born about 1831. The marriage between William Rice (Sr.) and Amelia took place in 1830; so the year of marriage is right with the birth of their first-born, William Rice (Jr.).

On the 1850 Census for William and Pamelia Rice, residing in Dennis Township of Cape May County, NJ, there were two more children listed along with William, so there were more then two children born to William and Parmelia, although Parmelia, their daughter was not on the 1850 census. Besides William Rice (Jr.), the other two children named were Joseph T. Rice, b. abt. 1841, and Mary Rice, b. abt. 1843. Mary is also seen with her father on the 1860 census at age 17. William was apparently widowed by the 1860 census.

The second marriage I found in the Cape May County Marriage book was that of William Rice (Jr.) and Theodocia, but her maiden name was Sutton, not Hand. They were married 2-5-1853. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Maiden name unknown) Sutton of Dennis Township, Cape May County, NJ. I found Theodocia Sutton on an 1850 Census with her parents and several siblings, namely Alexander, Elizabeth (II), Mary, William (II), Melinda, Lydia, Amelia, & Jacob. Two other young men with the same Sutton surname were listed at the end, possibly nephews of William Sutton, named Joseph & George. All were born in NJ, including Theodocia. Approximate birth date of this Theodocia Sutton was 1833. You gave her birth date as May 1, 1834. That's close enough.

I also found a 1900 Census with William Rice (Jr.) and Theodocia Rice and her birth date was given as May 1834 and his was given as April 1831.

Hope this helps.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Sutton family--only what sonja 9 replied to my query. I do marriage lookups on the Cape May County Marriages book which you can order from the Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society. Hope this helps.

I have tried clicking on every one of the links I found doing a search for the Cape May His and Gen Society and all of them are coming up as INVALID.
Not sure if it is a problem with AOL tonight or just what exactly.

I will attempt to post the query once more under New Jersey and the various surnames, maybe some one of the family knows the information of which I am asking.

thank you for your assistance.

No one seems to have parents for Susan SUTTOn who married Mr. WILSON/WILLSON, on rootsweb or gencircles.com as of today.
