There is a wonderful book at Gloucester County Historical Society Library on the Cheesman family with eextensive and well researched geneaological information. I have bought it and used it quite a lot. There is a lot of information on the mills and Cheesmanville in it.
Good Luck!
Anyone knowing anything about Wm. C. Garwood?
Wow. I can't believe it has been 14 years since I posted this original query. And I still have the same email address! Still looking for any information on the family of Elizabeth Fisher HOWE and her parents John Jenks HOWE and mother Mary Elizabeth FISHER. It appears that John J. HOWE was in Camden County, New Jersey as early as 1859. He married Mary Elizabeth Fisher supposedly in Camden County but the New Jersey marriage records 1848-1867 do not show the marriage, so perhaps it was prior to 1848. 1860 and 1870 census shows that their daughter Elizabeth was born in NJ about Feb 1860, then the second child around 1862. Camden City Directory still has them in Camden in 1863 but the family was in Illinois by 1864 for the birth of their third child Amanda.
I would love to know more about the families of John Jenks HOWE and Mary Elizabeth FISHER. Any of this sound familiar to anybody?
--Jim Murphy
Biloxi Mississippi

Cox Camden

I am trying to find information on a family that lived in Camden between 1920-1930. Their names were Francis J Cox and Marie Cox (nee Graham) 2 girls Mary and Margaret. I believe that the Francis J Cox is my great great uncle. I have a boat record for him leaving Ireland in 1904, he was meant to go to his sisters in Pittsburgh but he never arrived. In the 1910 census Frank was living as a boarder in Philadelphia by 1913 he married Marie Graham, In 1920 the family show up in Camden Bonitz street, The 1st child Mary was born in Philadelphia abt 1914 and the 2nd Margaret was born in New Jersey about 1916 so between 1914-1916 they moved to New Jersey. In 1930 census the family is living in Woodlynne, Camden, New Jersey at Cedar Ave, and by 1940 the mother Marie, and girls Mary and Margaret is living in Haddon Heights Borough, Camden,Francis is living alone at Carman street Camden. He worked as a sales man for Grand Union Tea Company. I also found a "United States, World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942" This states Francis was born on May 22nd 1885 (my Francis was born May 20th 1886) I know dates cant be correct as i have found out before, he lived with a Mrs Bowe at 210 S. 5st...!!!

As you can see I have done research on the above family. However I am unable to link this Francis with my Francis. I am unable to find a death record as I am unsure where to look.

I hope someone can advice me on what to do next.

Hello,
Yes, Lidie married George W. Lloyd. She was the third child of Henry/Harry G. Edwards and his wife Martha Myers. Her name also appears as Leidy and Lithia. I do not wish to add any confusion to your search but be aware that Henry also used the name of Harry, which was common back then. Henry had a brother named John C. Edwards and he also had a daughter named Lydia M. Edwards who was born in 1879. His wife was named Martha Ann Stillwell so both could also be "Mattie". This family is related to my brother-in-law. I look forward to comparing notes with anyone in this line. - Carole

Hi, Hope we can help each other. Lidie was my grandmother. I remember her, but my grandfather George W. Lloyd died before I was born. I've focused most of my research on the Lloyd (Leicht the German name) side.
I have Lidie's father as Henry G. Edwards and her mother as Anna Martha Myers.
Her name was Lidie, not Lida or Lydia, but I have caught mistakes by census or other record takers. Her mother is also listed as Mattie in one record.
I have neglected Lidie's side of the family and have just started to verify information- I want to get a copy of her death certificate to see if her parents
names are noted. I believe Henry G (not Harry) is correct but I want to verify.

How is Lidie your great-grandmother? My father was Howard Lloyd and I
grew up in New Jersey and my husband and I retired to North Carolina.
I'm also trying to check out more on the Myers side.
Let's keep in touch. Thanks.
Ruth Conner, Hampstead, NC

Hi Betty, I saw your blurb on Ancestry re: your gr.grandpa's restaurant in Camden, NJ. My family was from Camden also (Kaighn). If you go to DVRBS website on the internet, it is run by Phil Cohen and it contains a lot of businesses that were located in Camden in years past. (DVRBS is abbreviation for Delaware Valley Rhythm and Blues). Phil Cohen has done a lifetime of research on Camden, so if you don't find it on his website, you can send him a message. By the way, I worked at 5th and Penn Sts. for 25 years at Rutgers University, which is there now. Good Luck. Joan A.

Hi.
My name is Betty Bennett ( nee ) Amberger. I have been trying to find the restaurant that my g grandfather owned or ran in Camden, N.J. It was suppose to be located at the corner of 5th and Penn in Camden. His name was Isaac C. Brown Sr. He lived on High St in 1920 census. His wife was Melissa (Nee) Kopp .The had 10 living children The other 5 children were stillborn I think. I found him in the 1920 census but his occupation said he was an officer / keystone so don't know he did that as I was always told he had this restaurant. The 1910 census did have a colum for your occupation. So that is about all the news I have. He died in 1924 . If anyone has a picture or article or grand o pening of the restaurant or anything please email me at my email address.
bettybennett@cox.net I was born in Camden in 1942 but at age 9 my parents moved to Calif and now having been married for 53 years I now live iN Oklahoma. I would appreciate any information as my mother turns 92 the 29th of this month and is wanting to see something in writing about this as she wasonly 3 when he passed.
Thanks Again

This is absolutely correct. Joseph Blair was the son of Marie Blair and he was married to Ruth who bore a son Joey Blair who is my cousin. Marie Swain Blair was the sister to Margaret Swain Petris who was my grandmother. Aunt Ruth and Uncle Joe died a day apart and were childhood sweethearts. I believe Uncle Joe died of a broken heart. I am looking for my cousin Joey Blair who would be in his 60's now, as am I Jill Petris Lamparella.

Their child was William Joseph Petris who was not a Jr., William Petris married in 1947 to Elizabeth Mae Reeves and bore two daughters. Sheree Joy Petris who married Robert Rombesburg. Sheree Joy Petris Romesburg (1954 to 2007). The first born daughter was Jill Petris Lamparella (B. 1951) who is presently married to John J.
I didn't check closely to see if I had included any of these records previously. It looks like the John W Liss that was the WWII veteran was the son of August Liss (son of Frederick and Ernestine). I did not find any more about Frederick Jr. sons of Frederick and Ernestine Liss, who seems to have disappeared from records between 1917 and 1920. Perhaps an influenza victim? Looks like Rudolf Liss, another son of Frederick and Ernestine may have been a patient (psychiatric?) for a number of years at Lakeland, NJ.
I have information on my tree for the Liss family crossing to the states, except for one son that wasn't listed with the family, but may have traveled with other relatives that came at the same time. I haven't gone on the international ancestry yet, as I was trying to get as much as I could before I spent the extra money. There are additional Liss members and Melchert (Ernestine's maiden name) in the Camden area that were baptismal sponsors. I'm still trying to figure out who went with whom, but limited time to spend on this search makes it tricky. Thank you for your help!!!
Debbie

Have you tried the Camden County Historical Society?

Try: http://cchsnj.com/

I believe they have the burial records for Colestown - see the catalog on the web site.

Karen in South Jersey

No, not related. Just someone who does lookups for area.

Which of the Liss children are you missing info on?
I will see if I can figure out who John Liss is related to.
Could not locate the passenger ship record for the Liss family coming to the USA - must be between end of November 1890 and 1893 (I think they were listed in Camden city directories then). Do you have the Camden City directory listings for the Liss-Knauer family? Was not successful with locating John Knauer either on passenger ship records.

Also, have you checked Schmukenwalde, Osterode to see if there are perhaps church records available? I could find Osterode but not Schmukenwalde. Perhaps someone on a German message board could locate it.
