Could anyone help me please. my two ancestors - sisters Bridget born 1873 and maria McKeon born 1868 in Leitrim Ireland they emigrated about 1890. Their parents were Patrick McKeon & Mary Murray. Bridget became Mrs Fallon and had one child named Milred. Maria = Mrs Shine had 4 children - Mamie, George, Catherine, Frank. I don't know the first names of the husbands. I'm not sure either that I have the right state - it's possible that they lived in New york. I found another sister living in Ridgefield in the 1930 and 40s census. I can't find those two in any of the census. I would really appreciate any assistance I could get with this. Thank you for your help.

Hello davidahenry - I note that you have a map of the area. I believe my GGGGGrandfather was a George Smith (Schmidt) he joined the New Jersey volunteers when they were enrolling - think he came from a family on the tract - is there a Schmidt/smith listed on the map? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you Jim Barraclough

Hi Phyllis
Thank you for these information.
I am in Germany and the Voelling family was original from my place here before they emigrated. Beside my ancestors I am also researching the emigrants from here and 2 generations of their descendants.
Do you know about Franz Voellinger and his wife Theresa Berger? I am still trying to find their dates of death and places of burials.
Their son Franz / Francis was married to Stella.

The Voellingers are connected to my ancestors, but very far back when in 1799 Ignatz Voellinger married Anastasia Heck.
If you should have any questions my email is
badenroots@yahoo.com

Bee

SCHMIDT Family of Palisades Twp./Bergen County

I am looking for any data or public records (death certificates, deeds, wills/administrations, etc.) relating to Henry Schmidt (born November 1858, province of Mecklenburg, Germany, occupation - "tailor", died in Bergen County NJ between 1900 and 1910) and his wife, Marie Anna [nee Hartmann] Schmidt (born July 1858, Germany, died after 1910), residents/homeowners of Grand Street in Palisades Twp., Bergen County (according to the Census of 1900). "Mary Schmidt" is listed as a widow in the Census of 1910, Palisades Twp. Bergen County, the last known entry for her. They may have left an estate, or records of death; they appear to have had 3 children, all dead by 1900 (see Census of 1900 entry). Some members of their extended Schmidt family changed their surname to SMITH in the years around World War I; Henry seems to have retained the SCHMIDT surname. Other Schmidt Family members were buried in the Grove Church Cemetery of North Bergen, NJ; Charles and Marie were married in that church about 1888. I have no other information on this couple and would appreciate any help in locating additional records. I found some family records in Bergen County before becoming permanently disabled in 1999, which prevents me from traveling. Any further questions about Henry or Marie Anna Schmidt, please contact me.

I just discovered your question! Sorry that I've been so long in responding. No, I'm not related to your Henry McCaughin. Mine were primarily from upstate New York (EssexCounty). My New Jersey connection was Mary Adele Evans married to Henry Clay Evans from Hoboken .

Does anyone have access to Garfield city directories from 1915 to 1930? The 1927 and 1929 ones are on Ancestry and contain some of the Zagora family members I'm looking for, but I'd like to trace the family from 1915 to 1930 in Garfield. Does anyone know if they are available for the public to look at? I live in New England, but may be able to get to NJ this summer. Or are they online anywhere?

I believe the immigration date in the census is incorrect. I have a copy of Charles and Bertha's marriage certificate and it is dated October of 1914. He may have immigrated just before the marriage. His father was living near Bertha's famiy in the 1910 census, but was alone. Apparently the rest of the family immigrated at a later date. As you can see from the census data, there is a big gap in the ages of the children, separating those born in Hungary and those born in the US. There is some thought that this may have been an arranged marriage and they may have been married very shortly after Charles immigrated. Thanks for all your help in searching. I appreciate it!

Zagora family in Garfield - 1920s

I am looking for information on Charles Zagora, son of Stephen Sr. and Julia, born between 1894 and 1898 in Hungary. He married Bertha Shumack in 1914, but supposedly it was an unhappy marriage. He appears in the 1920 census, living in Garfield with his mother and siblings, but listed as married. In family obituaries from the mid-1920s, Bertha and Charles (listed as Carl) Zagora are said to be livng in Brooklyn. Charles's mother and siblings died in Bergen County, but his SSDI lists his death place as NY. Does anyone have information on any members of this family?

Hi! I am looking for the birth certificate for :
Male DURBUR
Born: 26 January 1898
Bergen, NJ

I need someone who will be going to the archives etc. who can look at the original. I think this is a transcription error but want to be sure. My grandmother was born on 27 January 1899 in NJ and I think her info may be written wrong. Her name was Bertha Durbur and her parents were Frederick J. Durbur and Bertha Prier. The male Durbur is listed as Fred and Bertha's son. I have not been able to find my grandmother's birth certificate either. So either there are two certificates for two different children or I'm thinking she was written down as male with dates off by one day , one year and that is why I can't find hers,.Thank you in advance if you can solve this mystery.

Yes, that's the couple, I also have Carl's WWII Draft Registration from 1942 but that's where the trail ends.

The grandson, William, attended Bogota HS in the 1950's and is buried in New Jersey; I suspect the grandparents stayed in NJ until their deaths also.

Carl and Anna also had two daughters but, without marriage info, can't find them either.
MESSINGER"s with Palatine Origins / Ramapough - Ramapo Tract

Is anyone researching Messinger"s from the area of Ramapo, Rockland Co, NY - Mahwah, Ramsey & other northern NJ towns adjacent to Rockland Co, NY that are located in what was once known as the Ramapough/Ramapo Tract in the 1700's?

I've found various spellings of this name but the branch I'm interested in from the above area appears to be German from the Palatine & came over in 1710 from England as part of the Crown's efforts to establish the manufacture of naval stores i.e. pitch, tar, rope, etc. in NY.

By 1750 or so the name in Ramapo, Rockland Co, NY had become MESSINGER.

This appears to have evolved from MAYSINGER used in the generation before.

And the earliest form found with the arrival in 1710 of the Palatines from England being MAISINGER: Koenraat aka Conrad & Sabastian.

Conrad MAISINGER is whom I'm interested in.

He arrived on the 7th ship in Jul 1710 & settled in the village of Annsberg, one of four Palatine settlements collectively known as Germantown in Livingston Manor, the 250 sq mi holding of Robert Livingston in the area that is now Columbia Co, NY.

In 1711, he is listed as one of the Palatine volunteers in the failed British war with French Canada.

Afterwards, due to political differences between Robert Livingston & Colonial Gov. Hunter, promised food & supplies which were part of the Crown bargain with the Palatines who would be manifacturing naval stores rather than farming, and which the Palatines alleged that Livingston stole from them by way of not forwarding the promised food & supplies, were never received by the Palatines.

As a result of the hard winter of 1712 - 1713 w/o the promised supplies, the Palatine settlements at Livingston Manor suffered much hardship & starvation.

Many Palatines left including Conrad who was part of a group that settled in the Ramapough/Ramapo Tract of northern NJ/southern NY.

In the Henry Jones' work on the Palatines, Conrad's wife is given as Anna Margaretha WANNEMACHER aka WANNEMAKER d/o Adam.

From this couple, my interest is in their 4th child, Nicolaus b. 22 Jul 1722 Ramapo Tract & bapt. Hackensack, NJ.

Jones doesn't say the denomination of the church at Hackensack but the Palatines seemed, from things I've been looking at, to use the Reformed Dutch Church when there wasn't a Lutheran congregation available so perhaps this was the Hackensack RDC.

I'm trying to build the family group of Lewis Maysinger/Messinger & wife Eliza/Elizabeth nee unknown as well as document Lewis back to Conrad.

Tentatively, working from Conrad 1710 to Lewis I have the line as:

1710 Palatines' Arrival in NY / 7th ship

Gen 1 - Conrad MAISINGER + marriage abt. 1712 - 1713, possibly Ramapo Tract to Anna Margaretha WANNEMAKER

Gen 2 - Nicolaus MAISINGER b. 22 Jul 1722 Ramapo Tract, Bergen Co, NJ + Unknown

Gen 3 - Conrad MAYSINGER d. Aug 1786 Franklin, Bergen Co, NJ + Margaret VAN WINKLE d. 18 Apr 1812 Bergen Co, NJ

Gen 4 - Nicholas MAYSINGER b. Sep 1763 Ramapo Tract, Bergen Co, NJ d. 9 Oct 1804 Franklin, Bergen Co, NJ + Susanna Unknown d. 19 Jan 1843 Mahwah, Bergen Co, NJ

Gen 5 - Lewis MAYSINGER/MESSINGER d. 17 Apr 1833 Ramapo, NY + Eliza/Elisabeth Unknown d. aft. 1850 Ramapo, NY

Other variations on the surname not included above: Meysinger, Mausinger, Meusinger & Meisinger.

Is any one looking at MESSINGER"s who may have started out as Palatines?

Hi Mike,
Hope we hear from some others! Carl Wilhlem Bergqvist, born, 25 May 1878, is my great grandmother's brother. I was trying to track down all her siblings but am at a dead end with this line. Do you have Carl and Anna's marriage record? I also have births for their three children.

You can email me at pat4gen@hotmail.com

Also, the Bergquists had a nephew, Joseph Nathaniel Bergsten (born Josef Natanael Bergsten in 1899 in Sweden) who lived in Teaneck, married a woman named Lempi who died in Paterson, Passaic, NJ in 1995, and had a daughter named Ruth who was born in 1940 in Teaneck. Joseph was the son of Klas Emil Bergsten, and Joseph died in New Jersey in 1963.

Hello,
My name is Mike Draper and I am also looking for any descendants of Carl and Anna. Anna Kristina Bergsten Bergquist was sister to my Great Grandmother, Hilda Olivia Bergsten Draper. Both were children of Johan Gustaf Bergsten and Lovisa Matilda Berg of Harja, Vastra-Gotalands, Sweden along with Carl Johan Bergsten of Smithtown, Long Island, Klara Augusta Bergsten Anderson of Bogota NJ, Victor Bergsten of Olean, NY, Gustaf Sanfrid Bergsten, Oskar Vilhelm Bergsten who lived somewhere in the US, and Klas Emil Bergsten and Ellen Elisabeth Bergsten who remained in Sweden. I have plenty of info on the family going back in Sweden, and am interested to connect with descendants of Grandma Hilda's siblings. If you have any info you would be willing to share, it would be greatly appreciated!
