I tried to obtain a death certificate for James from the NJ Archives. They did a search from 1910 - 1915 but said they were unable to find any record of him. As his wife Mary Casey was still living at the same address in Dumont in the 1915 census, I thought it most likely that she had buried James nearby. I guess my next move will be to try again with the NJ Archives to see if they can find any record of Mary's death certificate.

Probably the best way to go is to obtain a death certiicate for James M. Casey. You can contact the NJ Archives in Trenton, NJ and give them all the info you have. For a small fee they will send you the certificate which will usually tell where the burial took place.

I am doing research on James M. Casey who lived in Dumont, Bergen Co., New Jersey in 1910. He died sometome between 1910 and 1915 as his wife Mary listed herself as a widow in the 1915 census. The family was Catholic. Does anyone know what Catholic cemetery was closest to Dumont? I am trying to find his grave as well as the grave of Mary. Thanks for any help!

The county clerk should have steered you to the searching vault, for deeds, in the same building at One Bergen Plaza, next to the courthouse. That's where all the deeds, and grantor/grantee indices are...Can trace the ownership of the house backward, or just look for Mr. Heck himself. Grantors are the sellers, grantees the buyers. He should have been both!

Not everyone who dies has a published (paid) obituary, so you may be on a wild goose chase trying to find one. Why not call Calvary Cemetery directly, and ask them the DOD of John P. Heck? Be sure to ask for the plot number, owner and names of others buried in the same plot. The cemetery office may be kind enough to at least give you the specific DOD over the phone. Good luck!

Probably the best & cheapest way is to contact the NJ State Archives in Trenton. You can find their fee schedule and other information on their website. (I think it may be $10 for a copy of a will packet?)

I think this link should get you to the right page, I hope. www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/reference.html

You can also get them by contacting the Bergen County Surrogate's Court. However, they charge a search fee and $3 per page for copies.

Good luck!
Joan

Joan Manierre Lowry
mailto:jmlowry@earthlink.com

You could also visit your local LDS family history center. Many years ago the church microfilmed these NJ wills. They are copies of the original handwritten documents. They have copying machines, but I would only copy by hand the important information - not the legal mumbo-jumbo in.

Some of these wills have a wealth of information, such as the one for my great-great, grandfather, Albert Pulis, who had only daughters. It stated who each husband was!

John Minke
Homer, AK

New Jersey State Hist. Soc. has a DeGray Family 1795 - 1908 printout MG 1167.
There is a DeGray-Ryerson Cemetery in Hawthorne (now Passaic Co.) I have copy of grave stones, and have several references to that family.
Could your John be(?)Johannis DeGray (DeGraw) from Scotland, married Lena Ryerson[sic]? Followed by several offspring named John. I have much more on this family.
Ginger in PA

Gerrit married Maria de Mooij in 1856.

I found some of your other postings but I could not tell if I am researching the same tree or not.

Hi. I am doing this research for a friend, and I told them that the obits were probably paid. I am going to check the South Bergen weekly for 1945 on microfilm at the Rutherford library and the Herald News on microfilm at the Clifton library, just in case. This person died shovelling snow in front of his house in the aftermath of the pre-Christmas blizzard of 1945. There may be a local story about that, too, which I checked in The Record, but there was none.
