Natter's Alley is mentioned twice in "The Social Anxieties of Progressive Reform: Atlantic City, 1854-1920" by Martin Paulson. Apparently Natter's Alley was the scene of prostitution activity in the early 1900's. An investigative report published in The Atlantic Review on January 19, 1914 listed 32 disorderly houses in A.C., 11 of which "were located on Natter's Alley, an interracial slum district within the Northside. Two were occupied by whites, and nine by blacks, but this area had never enjoyed police protection and was the continual target of raids by both city and county officials." p. 229.

Jerry

From what I have gathered he was part of GAR except I can't find any civil war records and have yet to find a burial! I have seen some picturs of him posing with GAR members too.

Thanks again! You are great!
Jenn

Gopsill's 1888 directory has the blacksmith shop at 1115 Arctic Ave. So it was right next door.
Jacob is also listed as the president of the German speaking Freemasons in AC. It was the Atlantic City Lodge, #45, Sons of Progress. They met first and third Wed at 8PM at the Mason's Hall, corner of Atlantic & Michigan.
He was also the treasurer of the AC Turn Verein which gathered twice a week at the Gymnastic Hall which met at his place. I guess they moved the beer barrels out of the way! I read about the Turnverein or Turners movement before. It was a German movement that encouraged athletics, physical fitness, and military drils and marching, etc. It was quite important in the 19th century.
That seems to be all there is in the directories. Have you researched if he served in the Civil War? There are numerous databases which would give you dates served and what regiments soldiers served in. Then you could research the history of the regiment and find out what battles they fought. If Jacob was a veteran he would very likely have belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic(GAR) which was the American Legion of it's day.
Jacob was a leader in among Atlantic City's Germans and sounds like an interesting ancestor to have. I find it pleasing that he at least knew people that two of my great-grandfathers knew over 50 years before their families came together. I've enjoyed researching this. Best wishes, Mike

Since you posted this ten years ago, I'm not sure you're still out there -- however, I have found an answer to one of your queries:

Harriet McCollum may have been the same person as Elizabeth McCollum, b. 1810, daughter of Daniel McCollum and Martha Winans. Elizabeth McCollum was married on August 29, 1833,in Clermont Co, OH, to William Slye b. 1808

Children:
1. Dewitt G. "Incidents In The Early History Of Clermont County," by Benjamin Morris, appeared in the Clermont Courier May 17, 1 860, vol. xxiv no. 17, and provides valuable clues for genealogical research. Excerpt follows:

"In the fall of the year 1802, Rev. John Collins came out from New Jersey to Williamsburg, and purchased of Gen. Lytle an entire survey of land, sufficient to make seven or eight good farms. The East Fork was the north ern boundary of this land, from the mouth of Clover to within a quarter of a mi le above the mouth of Ulrey's Run. There were four partners in this purchase, n amely: John Collins, Cornelius McCollum, Isaac Higbee and Josiah Albertson. Alb ertson never settled on his share of the land. A part of it was leased, and it finally fell into the hands of his children. Early in the Spring of the year 1803, Collins, Higbee and McCollum moved out and divided the land. McCollum se ttled at the mouth of Clover; Higbee settled on the East Fork, below and adjoin ing McCo1lum; Collins settled on that part of the land nearest Ulrey's Run; his farm was called the "horseshoe bottom." Albertson's land was between Collins a nd Higbee."

Sources:
1. 1850, 1870, 1880 Census
2. Clan McCollum by Ocsar McCollum [LDS]
3.
I'm not related but my ancestors were in AC at the same time so I searched it. From Ancestry.com in Gopsill's 1898 AC directory Jacob Natter is listed as a active member of the Neptune Hose Co., # 1. Engine house on Atlantic Ave near Conn. Ave. My G-GF Charles Mathis belonged to a neighboring fire company.
I also have Jacob and family from the 1870 census living in Egg Harbor City, NJ. There are other Natter families in EHC at the same time. EHC was founded as a German city in the 1850s. The last German-speaking priest was there in the 1950s. My G-GF Michael Guenther immigrated to the area in the 1870s. The man listed right below Jacob's family, Anton Puchelstein is buried very close to my GPs and G-GPs graves in the EHC cemetery.
I'll try to find a AC address for you soon. Best wishes

Hi Patti, In the 1930 census I found a Ruth Parker born about 1928. She lived at 110 Phila Ave, Egg Harbor City. She was listed as a adopted daughter. The head of the house was William Leek, 57, a plasterer. He was listed as married but there is no wife listed. Boarding at the house was a James Conover, 51, a laborer & his children. Conover is also listed as married but no wife present. It's not clear to me who Ruth's father is. Is this your grandmother? As to Herbert Weber I have very little. There are a couple of Weber families in Mullica in old census records. There are 1 or 2 in Hammonton, & several in EHC and Galloway Twp. Apparantly not all of these families were related. Weber is apparantly a very common German sirname. There are no Herberts among them. The only Herbert Weber who I can find who fits was born on 26 Jun 1926 and died Feb 1967 somewhere in NJ according to Social Security records. The 1940 census will not be released for 3 more years. Without his parents names I'm at a dead end. I would suggest that you go through any old pictures or papers that they had if available. Sometimes putting together a couple of scraps of info can lead to a breakthrough. If your GPs would be in their 80s now there might be some oldtimers around Elwood or EHC who might remember them. You could look for someone chatty if you live locally.
Best wishes, Mike

Patti, I looked up Herbert Weber in the census & Social Security death records. I didn't find any matches in the Elwood area. Could Herbert have been his middle name? Can you add any info like when was he born & where, or who his parents were? Mike

Hi Mike,

I am trying to find out the information that you had asked for my mom can't remember much about him cause it was so long ago. I do know that he died in 1966 cause it was the year I was born and he was buried in the Elwood Cemetary, its a very old cemetary. Even tho the house they lived in was in Elwood, New Jersey the mailing address was considered Egg Harbor, New Jersey if that matters any on the census.
Thank you for all of the help.
Patti

There was a small general store that may have been Wells on New rd. in Northfield. I was only about 5 or 6 at the time. The place burned down about 1966 or so. I believe the fire department used it for training. I remember watching it since was at the end of our street. I am not sure if this was Wells or not, but the name rings a bell. My dad would buy me pretzel sticks there when we went.

Thanks for the response. "My" Isaiah did have a son named Isaiah. The son, born on 19 July 1810 in NJ, married Nancy Winters in Clermont County, OH in 1833 and moved to Grant County, WI in about 1865. Their children have different names from those you give.

I searched my database and don't have any Mills or Symmes.

The Brookfields in my line are Elizabeth, wife of Matthias Johnson, her father William Brookfield (married Katherine Rodgers) and Elizabeth's grandfather, also William Brookfield.

I believe Elizabeth Brookfield's siblings Uriah, Charles and Stephen.

I believe the siblings of her father, William, were Job and Levi.

I'm not seeing any overlap between our lines, at least for now. Hope this helps.

I called Holy Cross Cemetery and they didn't seem to have the Gerardo I'm looking for -- I think it's another branch of the family that lived in Philadelphia. I think maybe they were buried in another, smaller cemetery in Hammonton.

I do know about Frances, though I don't know much about what happened to them after Michael's first wife died. I will try writing to Trenton for records. Thanks again!

Mark

Lookup needed -- Michael and Gerardo Rubertone of Hammonton

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find the exact death date of my great-grandfather, Michael Rubertone (AKA Michael Ruberton), who died in 1959 in Hammonton, Atlantic County NJ. He was married to Frances Bohunovsky, who died in 1975. I have actually found their headstone in the cemetery in Hammonton, but it lists only the year, 1959. Can anyone please help with this?

Also, I would like to find out about his father, my great-great-grandfather, Gerardo Rubertone, who was born in Italy and lived in Hammonton until at least 1930 (he is on the census), but I don't know when he died. I couldn't find him in the cemetery in Hammonton, and I think he might be buried with his first wife Angela, who died soon after they arrived in the US, probably in Philadelphia (he remarried shortly after to an older woman called Maria). I would really like to find out where they are buried and when they died.

If anyone happens to know anything, or to be going to the archives any time soon, I would be very grateful for any help. Thank you very much!!

All the best,
Mark

Ferdinand and Veronica were my great gtreat grand parents. They had a son named Frank. But my great grand father was August and he too had a son Frank, my grandfather. August and Maria had 16 children. One died young and one was killed in WWII. They moved from Mifflin County after August lost his job for trying to start a union at Standard Steel. He was a very skilled pattern maker. Several of the boys later worked at the bakery in New Jersey. The owner was a cousin of August. Other family members, including my gradfather, Frank, stayed in Mifflin County. One of his brothers, William (one of several with the "Bill Kuppel"name owned and operated the Oyster Creek Inn at Leeds Point. It is now run by his son also named Bill. Do you know anything about Maria's family?
