I am looking for more information on Joseph Warren born circa 1776 in Somersworth, Strafford County, NH son of Francis Warren & Elizabeth Field. I strongly suspect that his Joseph is my great great great grandfather who died 18 January 1846 in Canaan, Somerset County, Maine. He married a woman named Sarah (last name unknown) who died 13 April 1840 in Canaan, Maine. Joseph & Sarah's son Hiram on the 1880 census claimed both his parent were born in New Hampshire.

I've been trying to break this line for 9 years now and any information would be greatly appreciated. My thanks to you in advance.

Edward(twin)Whitehouse ? orphans

William Whitehouse b.1749 was a loyalist in the 17'th Dragoons during the American Revolution. He was given a land grant in Shelburne Nova Scotia in 1783. Married to Hannah, they were on the List Of Poor People in 1787 in Shelburne and their son Thomas Whitehouse was baptized in 1792 in Shelburne Nova Scotia. Did they also have a son William b.1778 in either Brooklyn N.Y. or Nova Scotia (in exile from Kittery M.E. with other loyalist families during and at the end of the war)? Is the loyalist soldier William Whitehouse b.1749 the orphaned son of Edward(twin) Whitehouse b.1711 in Dover,N.H.? Edward moved to Kittery M.E. before 1741. He served as a scout with John Frost in Cpt. Jonathan Bean's Co. in 1747/48. Edward also served in the reduction of Canada in 1760/61 with his son John Whitehouse b.1741. They both contracted small pox and died soon after returning home to Kittery,M.E.. Edward left orphans as noted in a petition by Benjamin Hsrmon of Phillipstown to England to recoup expenses incurred for the care of Edward's family. Thank-you in advance for any help.

This article was printed in the Foster's Daily Democrat in Rochester, NH. http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070801/F...

Arrest of Rochester cemetery preservationist leads to more charges

By AARON SANBORN
Democrat Staff Writer
asanborn@fosters.com

ROCHESTER — A preservationist facing charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct for refusing a police officer's order to move her vehicle from a burial site near a construction project had two more charges added Tuesday.

Michelle Smith, 45, of 6 Janet St., now also faces a reckless conduct charge and a violation for disobeying a police officer. The new charges were added during Smith's court appearance at Rochester District Court on Tuesday morning.

"Those are the charges we intended to bring forward all along," said Lt. Joseph Fricano, police prosecutor.

Smith was scheduled for trial on Tuesday but her attorneys, Samdperil & Welsh of Exeter, asked for and were granted a continuance.

A new trial date has yet to be set.

Smith, vice president of The Society for the Preservation of Rochester Burial Grounds, was arrested on the afternoon of April 25 when Smith said construction crews in the Washington Street area had parked their bulldozers too close to and were digging in a cemetery that is protected by the city.

The cemetery site, at the corner of Washington Street and Woodlawn Road, is in the area of a retail development project owned by the Flatley Company of Massachusetts.

In an effort to prevent further digging Smith drove to the site, rolled down her window and spoke with a police officer working traffic control. Smith said she told the officer that crews were digging at the burial site.

When the officer refused to stop construction she pointed to the area of the cemetery and told the officer she was going to drive over there. She then parked her SUV just before a small blue flag that marks the beginning of the burial ground.

She refused to leave the site, despite several warnings from police — and was arrested.

The burial ground contains the remains of 19 members of the French-Hussey family. Archaeologists from Portsmouth discovered graves there in December 2006. Shortly after Smith's arrest, an orange snow fence was put up around the site and remains there.

Attorney Richard Samdperil said he wasn't ready to comment publicly about the case.

Smith didn't want to comment about her case on Tuesday but did reference a fund being established at Northeast Credit Union by her friend Cyndy Lambert, to help pay for legal expenses.

She said that any money that isn't used on her legal expenses would go toward cemeteries in the city because there are as many as 200 needing extensive repair.

I'm looking for the parents of Dr. Joseph H. Smith born in Rochester 1806.

Here is a bio I found on him and his son Hermon.

Dr. Joseph H. Smith, who had long been prominent in the medical profession,
in politics, in public life and as a newspaper publisher, in New Hampshire,
removed to Lowell in 1867, where he has since resided. Dr. Smith is a native
of Rochester, graduated at the Brunswick (Me.) Medical College, in 1829, and
immediately commenced practice in his native town, removing to Dover in 1832,
where he remained until his removal to Lowell. He was a member of the New
Hampshire legislature in 1837, of the state senate in 1844-45, presidential elector
in 1848, and a member of the executive council in 1851 and 1852. He
also held various other responsible offices, corporate and municipal, and was for
several years publisher of the Dover Gazette,—all this in addition to an extensive
medical practice. In 1871 he established in Lowell the Middlesex -Democrat,
a weekly paper devoted to the interests of the Democratic party, and a
year later started the Lowell Daily Times. He sold these papers in 1873, Dut
took charge of them again in 1875, continuing their management till 1879, \vhe;i
he sold to Campbell & Hanscom. the present proprietors.
Dr. Hermon J. Smith, son of the above, born in Dover in 1836, has been for
several years a prominent physician in Lowell. He graduated at Tufts College
in 1858—the first graduating class of that institution ; studied in Harvard and
Dartmouth Medical Colleges, graduating from the latter ; was two years assistant
surgeon in the general service in the army, during the late war ; practiced
five years in New York City, and has been in practice in Lowell for the last
eleven years. He filled the office of city physician for five years, was eight
years in charge of the Lowell Hospital, and is now president of the staff in
charge of that institution.
My g-g-g-g-grandfather was James HOWE, born 1771 in I think Barrington, NH. He married 1793 Mary BOODY, was in Barrington in 1800 census, Lebanon, NH in 1810 and then moved to Vermont.

His father was probably the Thomas HOWE, who enlisted 1777, age 44 in the Revolutionary War, served at least two enlistments, and died 15 Oct 1838 in Rochester, NH (according to his widow's Bounty Land application). I don't know who his first wife was, but he married 2) 1832, in Rochester (or Barrington) Mrs Betsy Nutter (same application).

I would like any more information on these people. I looked in the cemetery transcriptions for Rochester & Barrington, in NHGEN, but no Thomas HOW(E). Particularly I would like to find a gravestone for Thomas, find who was first wife, confirm age, etc.

Thanks

Blakes in Strafford County

I have posted this message in the Belknap county message board but am elaborating on it and posting it to Strafford as well as the area in question was part of Strafford county before 1840.

I am looking for information on David Blake (b. abt 1800, d. 1852, probably in Center Harbor) and his wife Phoebe Knowles (b. abt 1804, Center Harbor, d. 1886, Laconia?). I am looking for any information that can help me find David Blake's ancestors. I strongly suspect that David Blake falles somewhere in the family of Jasper Blake but have not yet found a connection.

David and Phoebe lived in Center Harbor and/or Meredith. I found David Blake and unnamed family there in Center Harbor, Strafford County in 1830, and in Center Harbor, Sullivan County in 1840. In 1850, they are all named in Center Harbor, Belknap County.

David is often confused with another contemporaneous David Blake from Wolfeboro, and many trees that I have seen are polluted with misinformation from this confusion, but both of them are clearly shown with different families in the 1850 census. One of them had parents Jonathan Blake and Polly Lucas, and I am leaning toward thinking it was the other David Blake (not the one married to Phoebe). Possibly the David Blake I am looking for was born in Pittsfield, and I have a birthdate for David (but not sure if it is correct or if it is the correct David) from a tree on Ancestry of 22 Jan 1800. One prominent Blake family I have found in Pittsfield is the family of Enoch Blake.

David and Phoebe had daughters Almira (abt 1830-1862), Almatia (1831-1892, married to John Smith), Almeda (1837-1896, my direct ancestor, married to Ernest William Gourd), and Arvilla (abt 1839-1860). The daughters are often confused because of their similar names. There are also many other females with some of these same names around the same time, I guess they were trendy names around this time. There was also a son David (1833-1901), married to Sarah Weeks.

David and Phoebe are buried in Meredith Village cemetery, along with many of their children. I have seen their gravestones and also gotten an informational printout from the cemetery sexton. I have found several deeds to and from them in Belknap County and I have copies of them, but they have not shed much light on David's ancestral family. There was a deed to a Jesse A. Blake and I have not been able to determine his relationship. David Blake's estate was opened in 1852, and I have looked at the records, but I did not make copies. I did see in the estate that a guardianship was established for two of David's daughters in 1857 with Daniel Blake as the guardian (curious because mother Phoebe was still alive?) and I do not know Daniel Blake's relationship either.

Though I made one trip up to New Hampshire a while back to get some info, I am in Texas and unable to get up there too often.
Hoitt and a girl who died at a young age after an accident - I don't know her name), divorced and married another man (or lived with). All I know about her is that her name is Jean/Gene/Jinnie (it can also be spelt in other ways). Her son George is now 50, so her birth date should be around 1930 or so... About the place, I know that her husband Carl came from the New Hampshire Area, but at least one of the children were born in California. So I don't know if she's from NH and lately moved to CA with her husband, or if she's from CA and they met after he moved there.

Any info will be appreciated- I don't even know if she's living or not.

Hi, there was a very nice fellow who was helping me with my Ellison and Morrison families in New Hampshire. I have had a computer crash and have lost everything. If you happen to read this and would not mind relaying some of the information again, I would so appreciate it!!!
William Felker and Susan Holmes were from New Hamshire. They were married abt 1826 and the 1830 census finds them in New Durham in Strafford County. I'm looking for information that will allow me to identify their parents, also looking for biographical information on the families.

See attached family group sheet containing the information that I have.

Thanks

Edwin Brigham, b. in Dover, NH in 1895 - any info?

Good Day,

I have a lot of information on Edwin/Edward L. Brigham, and am trying to connect what I believe to be one man using two names.

As "Edward L. Brigham" he founded "The Little Shop" in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts back in the 1920s. It eventually became known as Brigham's Ice Cream, which was later merged with another ice cream company, but kept the Brigham's name (in 1929). I have EDWIN LEON, b. 25-Aug-1895, Dover, NH, son of Edward (E. or C.) Brigham, and his wife, Elizabeth (father Edward was listed in 1900 as b. 1869, Massachusetts, his wife, Elizabeth, b. ME). Edwin also had a sister, Vivian J., b. 1893 or 1894, supposedly in NY (by 1900 US Census for Nashua, NH). Edwin, AS Edwin, is not found again in US Census records (from my own searches) until 1930, when he is listed as a "salesman - confectionery" in the 1930 US Census for Springfield, MA.

A search of Newton, MA directories provides us with "Edward" L. Brigham and Florence I. Brigham, as proprietors of Brigham's in Newton Highlands, in 1925 and 1927. Florence is they key. In later directories of Springfield, MA 1931 and on, we find "EDWIN" and Florence I., residing in West Springfield, and still with ties to "confection". By the 1940s they'd moved to Suffield, CT, where they established Brigham's Candies at what was then 32 Mapleton Avenue. Edwin died in 1964, and Florence in 1970, both still living in Enfield at that time (CT Death Index)... though he died in Hartford, and she in Enfield.

I'm seeking further information on Edwin/Edward. Who was his father, and how does he connect to the various Brigham lines in Massachusetts? I can't find him for certain in 1870 or 1880 or later in 1910 Census records. There is an Edward C. (he was listed in Nashua, NH directory as Edward C., but in 1900 Census as Edward E.) and was a shoemaker by trade (which fits well with the "gang" from Marlborough, MA)

He is surely NOT the Edward C., found in Gloucester, as he was a fisherman by trade and other aspects aren't fitting. I can't find an Edward in the MA Vital Records born in 1869 that otherwise fits the 1869 DOB in 1900 Census, either.

My aim is to prove that 1) Edward and Edwin were one and the same person and 2) to connect him to the lines of Massachusetts.

Of note, also residing on Hartford Street in early 1900s, in the house in which I grew up (no, I'm not related) was a Louis Brigham, who apparently was very big in gelatin sheets production. In fact, the "garage" at 56 Hartford Street where I grew up, was one of the locations from which he ran his business. There's a Louis S. and a Louis K. Brigham in Newton, MA records, both of which connect back to the long line of Mass. Brighams. I can connect these folks to the line that spawned Peter Bent Brigham and his clan, but not to the Edw. L. Brigham (Edwin Leon Brigham by WWI and WWII draft records).

ANY help in fleshing out this man's family lines would be greatly appreciated. I'm still in the process of "legwork research", and may find my answers elsewhere, but figured this message board would be another place to request help in proving this line.

Many Thanks,

Jared

I am trying to find the ancestry of my 3rd great grandmother Martha Lane. Martha was born in Lee on December 3, 1794. Also in Lee, she married Samuel Trickey of Portsmouth. Samuel changed the family's last name from Trickey to Milton in 1851. I think Martha was the daughter of John Layn, but I am not certain of that and I have no idea of her mother's name. Can anyone help out? If anyone is interested in Martha, I have an ambrotype of her taken when she was 51 years old.

Funny Middleton town border

Hi, all! I'm planning a mini-pilgrimage to Middleton to do a little research into my Drew ancestors. Well, really, I just want to go there and get a feel for the place, 175 years after my people left. I plan to take a look at Drew Rd and the Whitehouse Cemetery, and maybe hit a library or two nearby.

I am very curious about the northern town boundries: they have a distinct zig zag shape to them. Anyone know why that happened way back when?

I am interested in researching John Whitehouse Drew and his family. I'm hoping to maybe find where they lived in Middleton and visit the place if it is still around.

They moved from Middleton up to Bolton, Canada in the early 1800s. It seems that quite a few people from New Hampshire moved there in those days. It was too late to join in the Loyalist exodus. Could these people have been Abolitionists? Or were they just looking for a better life on better land? Can anyone give me an insight into the history of these moves to Canada?

Those zig zag borders are very cool!

BJ Drew V
East Lyme, CT
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~drewclan/

Just received a copy of the obituary of Amasa W. Shackford who was a photographer in Farmington, Strafford, New Hampshire for many years. The obituary mentions a daughter that I've never heard of - a Mrs Adrian Hall. Wondering if anyone knows her first name, when she was born and whether or not she had any children. Amasa Shackford married Clara Lougee in 1866 so the daughter was probably born around then. Do know he had a son named John Seth Shackford born 1875. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I want to locate a descendant of either Irving S. Chamberlin, b. 1868, lived 1910 in New Durham (father Horatio G; wife Edith M.); or Harry W. Davis, b. 1895, lived 1920 in Farmington (wife Alice D. Chamberlin). I possess a wonderful studio photo of Chamberlin siblings Alice D., age 12, Charles H, 10, and Roscoe G., 4, taken abt. 1908. In 1930, Harry and Alice had children Arline (12) and Robert C. (10). Would like a bona fide descendant to have photo. It was found by a kind genealogist in a California flea market and forwarded to me in Florida. If no descendants exist, I will give it to the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society.

Is there a kind soul out there who could look up a marriage record for George Berry (or Barry) who married a Lucinda (possibly Hill), about 1857, near Somersworth? In exchange, I can help with research at the National Archives in Pittsfield where I am a volunteer. Thanks, Pat

Daniel Chamberlain(LIN) thought to be born about 1762, in Rochester, Strafford Co., NH, was the son of Ebenezer Chamberlain(4) William(3) Jacob(2) William(1).
Who are the children of Stephen NUTTER of NH.?

I am looking for a list of children born to Stephen NUTTER and his first wife, Abigail WENTWORTH, both of Rochester, Strafford, NH. Stephen was born 18 May 1775, the son of Richard NUTTER and wife Temperance NUTTER (her maiden name is NUTTER). Stephen NUTTER married Abigail WENTWORTH on 7 Apr 1796 in Rochester, NH. When Abigail died in 15 May 1826 in Rochester, Stephen NUTTER remarried a Betsey JENNESS, the daughter of David JENNESS and Lucy PAGE. Stephen was remarried by 1830, and probably in either Strafford or Carroll county, NH.

According to his obit, he was married twice and had 22 children.
If you can give me a list of his childrens names, birthdates, and location of their birth, I would so grateful. I thought I had this list saved but somehow my file is barren of this list. If you can help me find any of the childrens names, please email me at <gail_veve@yahoo.com> Gail (REMICK) Veve

Thomas family in Dover -- 1600's

Am trying to find the parents or grandparents of a Claude Thomas (my ancestor) who was abducted by Abenaki Indians from his home in the Dover area (Strafford County) & carried back to Canada in about 1689. Claude was 8 years old at the time. The rest of his immediate family was killed, but his father's name was John and his mother's name was Ann Lerard (sp? -- maybe Lenard or Leonard). Claude's father (John) was a cloth merchant. Trying to trace the family back to England and figure either Claude's parents (John & Ann) or his grandparents came to America sometime btw 1620 and 1677. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I am looking for descedents of James & Margaret McShane Dover, NH. My great grandfather Peter McShane immigrated 1856 from Armagh Ireland. He marreid Bridget Donelly in Dover. NH in 1858. Peter was a shoe maker & his family lived in Dover until 1872, then moved to NE. I have church records from St. Mary's church placing them in Dover in 1858 & 1859,1860 . I cannot find them in the 1860 Dover censes. The 1870, Dover ward 3 censes lists Peter & his family and riight above themi s a James , age 27 ,working at paint works, & Margaret McShane, I believe Jmes is Peter's brother.

John A and William K A Hoitt - Dover NH

I am researching John A Hoitt born in Dover NH around 1871 to William King Atkinson Hoitt and Sarah Swain. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses shows the family living in Dover and William KA Hoitt was a butcher.

John A Hoitt lived for awhile in Nashua NH and was briefly married to Martha (Mattie) Stevens. They had one son: Thomas William Hoitt (11 Sept 1884 - 31 Jul 1939). I have family records from this point forward.

I believe that William King Atkinson Hoitt is the son of Samuel Hoitt and Betsey Piper. I will know for sure once I come back from NH Vital Records office this week. In the meantime, if this family is familiar to any one, I would love to hear from them.
Beck, b. 23 Aug 1843 Jefferson, NH, and married Piermont, NH, 15 Sept 1864 to Julia M. Hill of Canada East. Seeking any information on this family. Does anyone have cemetery records for the Farmington area? Were Eben and Thirza Beck buried in a local cemetery? Any help appreciated.

Moses Leavitt Neal (1766-1829) married Patty Prentice, a.k.a. Ruth Prentice. They had seven children. I am hoping to find what became of four of them, who were all baptized at First Congregational Church of Rochester, Strafford County, N.H. between 1803 and 1806.

James Armstrong Neal (not the well-known James Armstrong Neal of an earlier generation)
Elisabeth Lewis Neal
Joseph Lemmon Neal
Samuel Adams Neal

If anyone knows what became of these people, I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

Steve..

John O'Donnell, Minnie Hall, Strafford County, NH

Looking for a John O'Donnell (middle intitial possibly O) born in 1877. He lived in Strafford, Strafford County New Hampshire sometime around 1895. He fathered a child with Minnie Hall, daughter of George W and Chloe (Buzzell) Hall. Minnie's parents would not allow her to marry John. The only record I have is the birth record of their son, Fred W Hall. Fred later became a prominent member of the New Hampshire community and was on the board of trustees for Austin Cate Academy and the University of New Hampshire.
Minnie had a second child on September 21, 1897 named Annie Ada Hall. The father is not listed. I am speculating this is the same John O'Donnell. Annie is my great grandmother who later married Albert Foss, Harold G. Caverly, and Trevelyan Corson.
Minnie Hall later married Marshall Hazlett. They had no children.
The Halls lived in Northwood and Strafford NH. Most of them are buried in the Caverly Cemetery in Strafford. Any help is appreciated.
Kim Varney Chandler
