Mary Lamay / Lemay - Resident of Raymond, NH 1915

This person has been my brick wall for 10+ years! Joseph A. Morrison married my GGrandmother Alfretta (Etta) Pinkham June 12, 1915 in Bath, Maine. According to the certificate of marriage he was 22 years old at the time of marriage, a Teamster and born in Manchester, NH. His mother is listed as Mary (Lamay) Morrison, born in Montreal, Quebec and living in Raymond, NH. His father, Fred Morrison is deceased, a former lumberman, born in Montreal, Quebec. This was the first marriage for both Joseph and Etta. They had a child named Frederick who was born October 30, 1915 (already found him). They were living outside of Maine and according to my Grandmother’s social services records Etta wanted to go back to Maine. Joseph put her on a train promising to join her soon and she never saw him again. This is a crazy story so I’m condensing it as much as possible. Etta gave Frederick up for adoption and later remarried in 1923. Since Etta remarried in 1923 she would have been widowed or divorced. If you have any information on Joseph Morrison please contact me. Thank you in advance!

DANE family during 1900's

Hello,

I'd just like to ask whether anyone knows of a DANE family in Derry, NH. I believe a Leonard DANE spent his last years there, dying in 1967, and his son, Lewis DANE, lived there for a long time.

I'm asking because I spent a couple of years trying to create a family-tree for a large FITZGERALD family of Greater Boston, MA. And, after 2 yrs. of trying to find out what happened to the missing and estranged grandfather of the older generation, I finally found him. Michael Albert FITZGERALD was in Boston in the 1930's, and he married Miss Frances DANE ~1937. Frances was the daughter of the Leonard DANE, so Lewis was her younger brother.

Around 1955, Michael and Frances moved to Bourne, MA, and they lived fairly long lives there. I don't believe they ever had children, although she was much younger than her husband. Michael died in 1971, and Frances died in 1999. I was able to obtain her obituary, and the only relatives mentioned were a nephew and niece in NH.

I would like to write a letter to either the nephew or the niece. I'd like to ask if they have any family-stories to share about their Aunt Frances. The obituary mentioned she was a hairdresser for a long time and was an artist.

Thank you for your time.

Betty       (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 12+ yrs.; now an Admin for 10 Lists and 5 Boards)

It has been over three years since I posted a message looking for info on subject. Since then I have been tested for DNA(67 markers), but have been unable to contact any GALE family to compare DNA. Please contact me if you are a male GALE and wish to compare DNA.

I'm seeking info on my GGGGrandfather, William C. Gale. The first record found of him was 1820 Census Marlboro County, S C with him being listed as head of household containing 3 males between the ages of 16 and 25. He married Catherine A.(unknown), born abt 1808, in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, S C. He died Aug 20, 1828 in Cheraw. His obit in the Southern Radical, Cheraw, stated he was 30 yrs old and a native of EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE. The obit in the Portsmouth Journal, Portsmourh, N H., stated he was formerly a resident of that city. Exeter and Portsmouth are both in Rockingham County, N H.

They had 3 sons,all born in Cheraw; John A ( my GGGrandfather ), Charles William, and Thomas L. On a Census for one son, the place of birth of father was listed as N H.; another son said foreign born. A current family member claims he was born in Bath, N C ( which is now in Beaufort County ).

Have been unable to locate the names of his parents or siblings if any. I appreciate any help and willing to share what info I have.

Charlie L Gale
Hartwell, Ga.

Looking for their descendents if they are interested in having this bible as they are not my Elliot family. They married in 1836, Bible is dated 1837 and is in fairly good condition. 12 children's births are listed, most deaths recorded and there are handwritten notes and newspaper clippings as well. I purchased it off Ebay last year.
In trying to find the correct family, I corresponded with a "?gentleman?" researching Stratham township who felt I should share all this informtion with him before the actual descendants had a chance to decide if they wanted him to have the info. So if these people are your ancestors please let me know soonest.

Terri in Canada

BERRY Family of N.H. and Vermont

I am a descendant of Alexander BERRY who I belive was born in either Strafford or Rockingham Co., New Hampshire (year unknown). He and his family moved to Sheffield, Caledonia County, Vermont in 1816. The family stayed in the Sheffield/Wheelock (Vermont) area for at least three generations, likely more (my ancestor Elisha F. migrated to Iowa around 1870).

I am looking for information on the descendants and ancestors of Alexander. Any pieces of information will be very helpful. What I do know is the following:

/* 1st GENERATION */
Alexander BERRY married Johanna GREY. Together they had five children, one of whom was Samuel, born in New Hampshire in 1790. At this time I do not know the names of the other children. The family lived in N.H. until 1815, then moved to Vermont.

//** 2nd GENERATION **//
Samuel BERRY married Dorotha WILLEY (born 1790, VT) and together had ten children: Hannah (1811), Samuel, Jr. (1813), Tamson (1815), Clarissa (1817), Nahum (1820), Dorothy (1822), Rebecca (unk.), William (unk.), Joanna (unk.), John (unk.), and Comfort (1835).

///*** 3rd GENERATION ***///
Samuel, Jr. BERRY married Hannah FRENCH and had at least eight children, Elisabeth (1836), Elisha (1838), Lydia (or Saydia?) (1840), Mary J. (1842), Rosetta (1849), Frank W. (1856), and Martha G (1857).

////**** 4th GENERATION ****////
Elisha F. BERRY married Judith HARDY and had the following children in Vermont: Arthur (1861-1866), Charles (1863), infant (1864-1864), and Alma (1866). The family then moved to Harrison County, Iowa, and had at least four more children: Minnie (1872), Martha (1875), Franklin E. (1878), and Arthur (1880).

/////***** 5th GENERATION *****/////
Franklin E. BERRY married Wilhelmina Helena SMITH in 1903 Jasper County, Missouri. The family lived in Missouri for some time and had two sons, Floyd Clyde (1903) and Paul F. “Pete” (1904). They then moved briefly to Iowa and had another son, Harold (1908), before moving again to Idaho and eventually Washington State. There, they had a fourth son, Charles R. “Chick” (1910). The couple raised their children in Everett, Snohomish County, WA and resided there until their death in 1967 and 1963, respectively.

I have more information on generations 6, 7, and 8 if it helps anyone. I am very curious to see if anyone has traced the BERRY line further back than Alexander, and where his ancestors may have emigrated from. Thank you in advance for your help.
I believe that Thomas Porter Ward must be buried in Wisconsin, but it might be in Janesville and not in Jefferson. My gggranmother (Hannah) lived in Janesville at the time of his death. He might have lived with/near her at the end. I haven't searched for his grave, but that's where I'd start. As far as Abigail is concerned, I believe she died in Honey Creek, Iowa. Hannah and her husband, Eli Tellier, moved to Iowa after the civil war, and Eli died there from typhoid pneumonia. He's buried in Edgewood Cemetery in Clayton, Iowa. Hannah married someone named Ecker after Eli died. We know this because she requested Eli's pension after 1880 using the name Hannah Ecker. At that time, Ecker has died, and she is listed in the the Honey Creek, Delaware Census as Hannah Ecker, living with her mother, Abigail Johnson who is also listed as widowed. I can only assume that Abigail had also remarried. (both are listed correctly as being born in New York and their ages are correct.) At that time, the US govt had passed a law regarding pensions and the rights of widows of civil war veterans. I suspect many woman married again at that time. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find the "Mr Johnson". (note: someone has 'corrected' the census information to indicate Hannah's name as Johnson, but I'm certain this is incorrect.) Hannah appears in the 1885 census, still in Honey Creek, but her mother is no longer with her. I would assume that Abigail died at some point between 1880 and 1885 and is buried nearby... perhaps in Edgewood Cemetery where Hannah's husband is buried. Please let me know if this helps you or if it gives you any additional ideas. BTW I also have listed 4 sons and 2 daughters for Thomas and Abigail. I think that's it.
In researching I also came across the possibility that Shadrack and Fanny were both born aboard ship and both orphaned. I would have to go through my files to see if I could find where I saw that. You mentioned you are a twin. I have twin daughters. They will be 43 in April. Do you know where Thomas Porter Ward and his wife Abigale Hitchcock are buried? I have a death date for Thomas 22 Nov 1855, WI. I don't have an exact birth or death date for Abigale, just that she was born about 1804 in NY and died after 1870 in WI. I would like to update my record for them if you have that information. I have 4 sons and 2 daughter for them, but those records are not complete.

Perhaps it is destined to remain a mystery. I find it hard to believe, as some people have suggested, that Shadrach and Fanny were both born aboard ship and both orphaned. But one thing I have realized through all of this is that the truth sometimes really is that strange. As I said, my twin sister and I are related to Shadrach and Fanny through Thomas Porter Ward, Shadrach's son. He is our ggg grandfather. I'll continue looking through the Vershire, NH connection. Things are being added all the time. Until later, Lynne

Hello. I hope this thread hasn't gone cold. I didn't see any response to your query about Shadrach (b 1770) possibly being the son of Thomas (b 1727 in Hampton). As you probably know, Thomas' father was named Shadrach as well. A descendent of Roger Shaw's (Shadrach b. 1699 was the grandson of Margaret Shaw... her father was Roger), moved away from Hampton and died in Vershire, Vermont. Her name was Ruth James, wife of David Sleeper. She died in 1823, and could have been a cousin of Thomas'. I am realated through Shadrach (b 1770) 's son Thomas Porter Ward. I, like you, think there has to be a connection.... but I haven't found it yet. Have you found anything else since your post so many years ago??

Actually I have no interest in the Brackett family. i was only answering an inquiry. I do see that Anne Virginia was born in Portsmouth 31 Oct 1931. Her records indicate that her father, Eugene, was a merchant born in anson, Maine and her mother was born in Industry, Maine. They were living in New Castle at the time of her birth.

Hello. My sister and I went there to Greenland this summer to try to find the Toscan cemetery. I stood out on front of the rail road station, trying to figure out where the place had been. I had thought from what I had read it would be handy and near there. But I could not see any cemetery. I wish someone from Greenland could go there for me and take pics to send to me of the cemetery today. Esp. the Toscan tomb stones. I hope to get back there again. Whose property is it now? Who owns the cemetery land? It is so sad to think that magnificent structure burned down. The photos of it are amazing. So different.

Hello,
I am Thomas Ward of Michigan.
I too am a descendant of Andrew Ward b 1801 in Vershire, Orange, Vermont, United States
I have some very solid research back to Vermont but have lost the lineage previously.
I have identified his children and possibly all of his grandchildren and can fill you in on anything you may be missing.
What I am interested in is tracing Andrew's father and mother and as far back as I can go.
Another subscriber had Andrew traced back to William Ward of sudbury arriving in 1638 but I was unable to verify anything before Andrews arrival in MI and birth in VT.
Any verifiable information provided would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

1850 census lists Christopher Clement age 60 shoemaker born NH, with Anna age 48 b. VT and son George W. age 14 b. NH, residing in Plaistow, Rockingham Co. NH.
1860 George and mother Ann are residing in Willoughby, Lake Co.,OHIO - (no Christopheer)
On the 1865 Draft Reg. sheet for the town of Willoughby, George was listed as George W. Crenent and stated he had served 1 yr. as a substitute, enlisting Aug. 1864.
I am trying to locate the regiment that George served in. Possibly he served for Wisconsin, enlisting 26 Aug. 1864 to Aug. 1865 (?) - I just can't seem to locate anthing to prove or disprove what I have found. Anyone researching this family and has definite proof as to his service? I am coordinator for the Lake Co. History Center and we are researching all men of Lake Co.OH who served in the Civil War, and I would like to add George to our list of over 1190 names.
Thanks for ANY assistance.
Ruth Sprowls (cwr@lakehistory.org)  or
ruthsprowlsATwindstreamDOTnet (this one only good to Oct. 15,2012)

I recently purchased a glass quart milk bottle with the name "Berry Farm" and "Stratham, N.H." printed on it. I really can't tell its age, although it doesn't look awfully old. Can anyone tell me who in Stratham bottled milk in glass bottles and when? I'm descended from the Berrys of that town, and would love to know more, even if it's a current enterprise.
Wendy

My maiden name is Whittum and I am trying to find information on my great grand father, Moses Whittum, b. abt.1797.d 1830 I have no record of his birth. He married Lydia Marble, but I cannot find a record of the marriage. I do have a Rhode Island census of 1880 that lists my grand father James B.Whittum, and my father Joseph F. Whittum. This shows that James B. was the son of Moses, born in Maine, but no other details.
There is a record of his death in Providence and of the probate. He is not buried with Lydia in North Cemetery.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

My ancestors, John Bradley and Sarah Buckley were married in Portsmouth in the Third Congregational Church in August 1790 according to a transcription in the Lancaster, NH town records. I found a transcription of what I believe are some of the records in the BYU online library. They don't however, cover any of the marriages from that time period.

Abstracts from the records of the 3d or Independent English Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 1758-1831
Hammond, Priscilla

Does anyone know if there are records from this church that are available anywhere?

I think you have a typo....Hiram Ward was born in 1815, NY, not 1850. I also descend from Hiram and Elizabeth Hughes. Their son William H. Ward who married Sarah Elizabeth Campbell is my GG Grandfather. Their son Sylvanus Hiram Ward is my G Grandfather. Which one of Hiram's children do you descend from? I see you live in Colfax, Iowa. My mother was born in Ankeny, IA.

Hi. My sister and I went there this summer, to Greenland and found the train station. At least we assume it was, but were not sure as to the location of the land where the house was, if it was out on Anne's Lane or right there across from the station.This is EXCELLENT INFO, re. the location of the house. Do you remember where the tombstones are on that property? How far from the road as I didn't see any. I saw the railroad tracks but it was all grassy and grown up otherwise. Thank you.
