Help from anyone that has any information on the Nicholas Hodge born 1653, he lived at Rye in what is now Rockingham Co, New Hampshire.
I have information that I would like to varify that his grandfather was Thomas Hodge born 1583 in Bicester ? England who had at least these sons: Charles, James, Nicholas, and Michael.

Charles had the Nicholas that was born 1653 and who settled at Rye, now in Rockingham Co, New Hampshire. He was associated with the Skillings family of Casco Bay and New Castle.

James was in what is now Kittery, Maine. One of his sons witnessed a deed there in 1643. Two of James's sons John and Henry went to Connecticut (I have the Hodge line there Book: Hodge AND ALLIED FAMILIES).

Nicholas born before 1605 had a fishing vessel and worked the coast from Casco Bay, New Castle, and Rye to Virginia in 1625. Don't have anything on Michael except that he had descents in Maine and New Hampshire and they intermarried with the other brothers children.

I believe my family is from the line of Nicholas (1653) of Charles (circa 1620) of Thomas 1583.

My ancestor is Thomas Hodge (1748) and he was married in Newberry port to Abigale Young and had two daughters there Elizabeth and Abigale. He removed to Portland Maine with the land lottery.

Would like to know the father of Thomas.

Also any information on the Nicholas 1653 that married Seaborn Reynolds the adopted daughter of Richard Tucker and his wife Margaret Raynell Tucker. Margaret died on Sagamore Creek after deeding her lands to Nicholas grandson of Nicholas and Seaborn. Seaborn's natural parents were Nicholas and Dorthy Reynolds.

Thank you Jo

Can you tell me if you can match any of my Maine ancestors to any you have found? And can you tell me where I might find the book you mentioned on the Hodge family (Hodge and allied families)? Here are the ancestors information:

His Father:
John D. Hodge b 11/1/1811; m. 1834 Almira Crocker b. ?
His Father:
John N. Hodge b.1790 ?; m. ? Sally Davis b. 1793 ?

And his Father:
John W. Hodge b. 1750?; m. ? Mary K. Robinson b. ?

I have more information if needed.

thanks or any help you can supply!

Also where did the name Hodge originate?

The best authority on early northern New England Settlers is the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" (which frequently lists Massachusetts settlers as well) by Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby and Walter Goodwin Davis. Hodge genealogies commence on p.341.

The authors do not list a date of birth for the Nicholas who m. Seaborn Reynolds. The date of his birth of 1653 provided by you makes him 5 years the junior of his wife, who was b. about 1648. Such a difference in ages should give you pause to wonder about the accuracy of Nicholas' birth date.

Their dau. Mary deposed about her mo. Seaborn and family. Perhaps there might be some information of value in that deposition, which was taken May, 1766.

Nicholas, their first child, was b on or before 4 Apr. 1682.

[Note: the Hodges are not my family.]

I have a Thomas Hodge born 1750 in Connecticut whom I think is the brother of your John Hodges. But so far can not prove it. He was in the rev war and stationed at the naval station at Newberry port as a captain. Where he married Abigale Young of Amesbury and where his uncle William Hodge was living, who was also a captain at Newberryport.

After the war (1783), Thomas went to Portland Maine (old Gorges county square of 1602 that became known as Logonia and is now Portland, Cumberland Co, Maine) and took his war bounty lands there and died there and is buried in East Portland Cemetery. His widow returned to Newberryport and remarried, but many of his children continued his lands in Portland. His daughter Elizabeth Hodge married William Harris (he was born in Ipswich) and they raised a large family.....I have a linnen genealogy tapistry done by their daughter Mary at age eleven. As well as several bibles of the Harris family. Years later Elizabeth Hodge Harris was buried next to her father Thomas Hodge.

My family tree contains Skillings, Harris (Williams alias Harris), Hodge, Pickerings, Cleves etc, (all Portland families and previous Ipswich and Newberryport names who were involved in fishing and fished the coast of Virginia and New England)

The book Hodge and allied families, 1901, by Orlando J. Hodge, can be obtained at any library thru SUTRO, It has a chapter on Nicholas Hodge born 1853, but not much information. It is mostly about the two sons (John and Thomas) of John Hodge and Mary Harris of North Unberland, England that went to Mass and settled first at Charleston and then at Newberryport and then sold out and returned to North Unberland England. According to the Hodge book, Michael Hodge the last living representive of Richard Tucker and son of Nicholas Hodge and Seaborn Reynols (adopted as Tucker), Michael was born 1680 at Rye Harbor, now New Hampshire. His father was Nicholas Hodge Jr and he had a brother Nicholas Hodge 3rd born about the same time as Michael and who died single. The person who wrote this information (not in the the book) claimed that there were three generations of Nicholas Hodge. Nicholas Hodge who operated his fathers fishing boat THE SWAN in 1622 on the Virginia coast and the father of Nicholas 2nd who married Seaborn Reynolds (adopted as Tucker)...this Nicholas was the Son of John and Mary Harris Hodge of North Umberland, England.

I am not a professional genealogist, just interested in my family, the information I have found by many of the so called HIGHLY RESPECTED HISTORIANS has a lot of conflicing material. Who (well intentioned) made a lot of BOO BOOS in collecting their gossip regarding genealogy....then printing it.

Not much more I can tell you, except to give you what sparce sources I have other than our family stuff.

Email me back and conpare notes.

According to our records, Nicholas Hodge Jr was wiped out finicially when he lost everything in a storm. Richard Tucker refinanced him. Richard tucker had adopted the niece of his wife Margaret Reynolds Tucker who was named Seaborn Reynolds daughter of Nicholas and Dorthy Reynolds.

Sea born and Nicholas married. This is all the information I have.

Hi ~ I don't recall whether or not I replied to this before..as I have been searching for a year now...John Hodge..b. 1753, married Lucia (Lucy) Tucker in 1776. John was in the Revolutionary War and died in Minot, (Bakersfield) Maine about 1823. Lucy was born in Gloucester, Ma. We are trying to find John Hodge's parents and where he was born. I don't believe it states that in the Orlando Hodge book. Help? Thanks.

you picked a tough one.

The progenerator of the Hodges in New england: John Hodge and Mary Harris of Northunberland Co, England had 16 children and all had a John (one went to Connecticut and settled with a brother Thomas).

As for your John Hodge. The Nicholas Hodge (son of John Hodge and Mary Harris and nephew of Nicholas Hodge brother to John Hodge) that married Seaborn Tucker (adopted dau of Richard Tucker and Margaret Reynolds and natural daughter of Nicholas Reynolds) had a grand son John Hodge born in area of Rye, me (he lived in Strawberrybank and signed several deeds for lands there). He married a Lucy Tucker from Glouscter, mass. (maine split from Mass in 1820?) This is all I know other than he was a mariner and traveled up and down the coast like all the Hodges Fishermen.

Dear Jo, You wrote:

I would really like to find more on your source for this info of the John Hodge grandson of Nicholas and Seaborn born in the area of Rye me (NH?) who lived in the area of Strawberrybank (present Portsmouth NH) and signed several deeds there. If this John did indeed marry Lucy Tucker then this is my ancestor John Hodge that I have been searching for. My John was born Sept. 25th 1753 (don't know where yet) and served in the Revolutionary War on at least two campaigns (1775 refortification of Falmouth, presently Portland ME, and 1779 the failed Penobscot Expedition). He married Lucy Tucker of Gloucester MASS (also a descendant to Richard Tucker) just after the Falmouth campaign in January 1776 and they settled in Minot Maine (which was Bakerstown / Poland back then). He died in Minot on July 23, 1821. If he was a fisherman early in his life then apparently he gave this up after the war to become a farmer as most of his later descnedants in Maine turned out to be. I have visted his grave site in the old Hodge Cemetery in Minot Maine across for the old Hodge farm where he once lived and have pics if you want to see them. I am a direct descendant to this John and maybe, from your information, our Johns may be one and the same. I would really appreciate any sources you have on the information on John Hodge the grandson of Nicholas Hodge and Seaborn Reynolds Tucker, his parents, date of birth and where he was born would be most appreciated. If your John Hodge has the same birthdate as what I have for my ancestor then this may clear up this mystery finally of where my ancestor John Hodge of Minot actually came from. Thank you!

To anyone who reads this post, please help if you can!

Richard Hodge
