Margaret, NH does not have a state-wide online index, but there are 3 ways you can go with this. First is the NH Vital
Records. During the early 1900s the state asked all the town clerks to transcribe their records onto 3x8 cards. These cards are filed somewhat alphabetically state-wide at the Vital
Records and can be searched for free, if you can go there (or get someone to look for you). I usually go at least once a month and would be happy to look for you. However, they have been closed since mid-December to facilitate a move to a new location. I have heard they will be opening soon, but could not promise to a lookup until mid-May. Second, our Family History Center in
Exeter, NH has films of the
Portsmouth Vital
Records. If the films contain births in 1892, I could take a look for you next time I go, which will probably be this week. Please email me directly at
MaryEllenZ@aol.com to let me know if this would be helpful and if no one else has already volunteered to do the lookup. Third, you can always contact the town clerk and ask them to verify your information. In many small towns in NH the town clerks may do this for you over the phone, but the
Portsmouth town clerk's office has a reputation for not being helpful to genealogical researchers and will ask you to put your request in writing and send them the request with $12 for a certificate. - Mary Ellen
