Charles "Charlie or Chas." died sometime between May 1930(when his mom died) to September 1977 (when his sister died). Charles' WWI draft record says he was born, June 15, 1892 and a bible entry says June 9, 1891. I don't believe the 1st date is right because his sister Esther was born October 26, 1892. When is mom was dying he was on his way from the White Pine County Nevada area heading to his mom's bedside in Elko, NV. Charles wasn't all there and could have taken off and walked and walked. I don't know if it was because of what he saw in the war or if it was heritary. His dad spent sometime in the state asylum before he finally took his life.

Could you provide information that gives the first name of Mr Hart as Harold. I've seen it listed as Harry, Henry and George as well.
The 1910 Census would indicate the last name as Hart but it also states that Verling and Elmos father was born in Connecticut and mother in California. Have you found this Mr Hart in the 1900 census. it would be an important fact.

I would like to obtain the birth certificate of an ancestor who was born in Nevada in March of 1889. My problems are: 1) I don't know if birth records were kept in Nevada as early as 1889, and 2) I don't know in which of Nevada's counties this person was born. If any of you seasoned veterans can give me some guidance, that would be great. Even if you can only tell me that records weren't kept yet in 1889, or that I am out-of-luck without the specific county, I would appreciate knowing that. If, on the other hand, birth records WERE kept in 1889, and/or there IS some mechanism for searching records statewide, I would be grateful for such information.

Hart Divorce in Nevada?

This is a long shot but could someone look up to see if there was a divorce for a Harold Hart vs Alice (Blake) Hart in 1909 or 1910 in Nevada. I read that Mr. Hart went to Nevada at the time of his son's birth and then wasn't heard from again. Alice married Otto Kromann (my grandfather) in 1912 in Fresno CA. I don't know what happened to Mr. Hart so I am guessing that he divorced my grandmother when he went to Nevada. This is confusing to us as his first born son stated he saw Mr. Hart (his father) in Arkansas years later, so we presume he didn't die. My grandmother is listed in the 1910 Fresno, CA census as a widow living with her parents the Blakes and her 2 young sons.

There were no birth or death records kept in Nevada until 1887 when the first vital statistics law was passed by the Nevada State Legislature. Prior to that date, the only possible sources available for proof of birth are newspapers or baptismal records.

Without knowledge of the town or county and the abundance of McDonald names in Nevada it probably will be very hard.

Good Luck,

Hello. I have try too find this relatives for many years now, the last i know is from a letter his mother write home too Norway, and say he is west in Nevada, they was living in Virginia, Minnesota, this was in the end of 1925, begining 1926. His name was Sivert Johnsen ( Sivert Olsen Viggen) he got this Johnsen name after his stepfather Ole Johnsen. Sivert was born in Norway 2.2.1886. Came too Usa in 1902. He was working as a locomotive engineers in 1910-17 in Virginia, mines. I will think he also was working as a locomotive engineers in Nevada, and came in the first of the 1920, and I will think he work like this also too the 1930. Any info or wher I can look for some Locomotive engineers, maybe in some mines? ( If ther was some in Nevada) also lookups as census, obits etc, for this Sivert have been great

Yes, I have. I went to the url you gave me and it was the same one that I had gone to. I've even called Nevada and they've told me that since I don't know the county, they can't be of much help. On her children's social security death index, it has her maiden name spelled two different ways and so I don't know which is the correct one. I was looking for a birth record that would tell me. I have since learned that after she and my grandfather divorced, she married 7 more times! How am I going to trace that??? I don't know the name she died under. I understand that she only had the three children by my grandfather though. At least I think that's correct information. Thanks for trying to help! All is appreciated.

Elko County has county Birth & Death records from about 1887. Newspapers are also a good source and date to the county's beginning. Neither are complete but worth checking. If you'll send or post the specific name and date you are searching I'll see what I can find in my index. Good Luck. Judy

re: Canfield death ca 1900-1910 in Elko Co., I have checked my cemetery listing and see one Canfield grave (no first name listed and no date). I have a partial Index listing of the early Elko Co Recorders Office (1887-1917). There are 2 Canfields there: Charles (b. 1877 in UT, died 1914 in Elko); Lucile (b. 1877 in UT died 1912 in Elko). No Canfield in the early Probate index. Nevada began registering Deaths statewide in 1911. Early Nevada death records are in the offices of the County Recorders. Elko county has recorded deaths ca 1887-1917. For a listing of the Nevada Recorders Offices - go to the Nevada State Archives website at: http://dmla.clan.lib.nv.us/docs/nsla/services/recorders.htm

Sorry for the delay - I don't check this board very often. I doubt I have anything that will help you since Searchlight is not in my "neck of the woods". Perhaps a post at the Clark County site would get a response. Best bet might be a local newspaper. UNLV I believe has a good collection of early newspapers. Good Luck.. Judy

His boyhood was spent on a farm in Nevada. Unable to attend high school after completing grade school, he gained much of his preparatory education by studying at home.

www.nevadaculture.org has the following:
1870 Nevada, Belmont, Nye county Page 5.
Vollmer, Edward 37 Merchant from Prussia
M.E wife
Henry son 2 born in Nevada. (abt 1868.)

Next door to this family is Adolph 22, Clerk born in Prussia. Possible relative of Edward.

Then in the 1900 California Census San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo you have.
Vollmer, Edward Nov 1833 66
Vollmer, Mary E Sept 1843 56 Married 29 years 6 children with 5 alive.
Vollmer, Bertha Sept 1870 Nevada
Vollmer, Arthur July 1873 California
Vollmer, Emma J June 1882 California

It looks like same family from 1870 in Nevada and 1900 in California. With Henry and Bertha born in Nevada, Rose might have fit in between....maybe??

Did you find Rose M. Leberthon in the 1910 California Census in Los Angeles with her three children, Theodore 18, Anna M. 16 and Rose C 13?? It says her father born Germany. I do think they used Prussia then Germany for place of birth on later census for people. This might be a clue as to her parents who might be the Vollmers in 1870 Nevada census.
.
Interesting that she says married but John is in the 1910 San Francisco Census married 2 for 2 years with Etta Alice 20 married 1 for 2 years with no children.

The California Death Index has the three children of Rose and John listed. With the death locations and dates you might try the obituaries for further clues.

Good luck in your search.
Arline in Nevada

Boy, you probably have a real search in front of you! Well, you may already know that Wonder is in Churchill County Nevada so would suggest a bit of search in that direction.

The mining areas were not noted in thier fine record keeping, especially for the old ghost towns and as you probably know, Wonder went bust around 1919. It took a few more years for the sun and desert to suck everything back down into the dust and I would pretty much figure that you would have to kick a few tumble weeds away to even find the old concrete foundations. Anyone out that way now can be considered pretty much 'lost'.....

Have fun with it!
Well, if I am reading Patricia's message properly, she agrees with me. Look in the Churchill County areas.

Also, you might make take a look at some of the search engines.
Frank (possibly Henry Frank) SIBOLE

Seekig any info re: Frank (possibly Henry Frank) Sibole, son of Henry Jackson SIBOLE and Luella (SNELL) Sibole. Frank was born June, 1888 in Michigan. Per his niece, Frank apparently moved to Nevada, living on a ranch, at some point in his life. Supposedly, he never married.

Frank was brother of my grandmother, Jessie Luella (SIBOLE) BROWN. She married Harrison Elmer BROWN. Flora, Lena and Charles A. SIBOLE were the other siblings of Frank and Jessie.

VESTAL/HOWE/SIMPSON

I am trying to find the family of Alex VESTAL,name listed in a 1909 Obit in Strasburg, Mo., that states he is from Paradise Valley, NV. He was a child of J.A /or Ace, VESTAL and Nancy HOWE. Elizabeth and Nancy HOWE of Jackson Co., Missouri both married J.A. VESTAL. Elizabeth and Nancy were sisters of my Great-grandmother Martha Jane HOWE.(two sisters married two brothers and when their mates died they married the surviving mate, 11 children from these two marriages). Her parents were William HOWE ( Oct. 26,1794-July 8, 1855) and Nancy SIMPSON (April 11, 1800-Sept. 18, 1847) of Lexington, KY. They moved out to Mo. when she was young. I also have a name in personal letters of Lizzie, Jim, and Jack VESTAL, circa 1940, I think of Oregon. Have 3 siblings in MT, 2 in OR, 4 in MO., and 1 in KS. Any help will be appreciated
