Joseph POTTS

I am looking for information on the uncle of my grandmother. According to a newspaper article published in Oregon in 1956 Joseph POTTS was a mining engineer in Eureka, NV. It also says that he was born in Pottsville, Indiana.

The above mentioned news article is the first I've heard of Joseph so I do not know his date of birth etc. Based on births of his parents I would estimate his birth to have been sometime in the 1830-50's.

I do not live in Nevada so my research is done online.

Does anyone know if there are records of miners available?

Are there any other records that might be searchable?

Is there a way to find out if he married or died in Nevada?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
Diane

POW/MIA Korean War HARRISON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Eureka County, Nevada as his home of record.

Soldier: FRANCIS EUGENE HARRISON
Born: 1931
Date of loss: July 16, 1950 MIA
RA19342453
G Co 19th Inf Rgt, 24th Inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are three families from Nevada that have not been located. There are one family from Eureka County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Re: 1880 Eureka Co, NV census

Judy: I've noted your inquiries regarding Minnie (Brandt??) McCreary and James McCreary. I have been seeking information concerning this family because of the marriage records for a Minnie McCreary and C. Y. Creek.

Charles Younger Creek was my GGG-Uncle, an adventurer whose story captured my attention. He left a comfortable existence with a large family grouping in Clay County, MO in 1850 to head for the gold mines. It does not appear he ever found his fortune for although I've found him on several census records, he is always listed alone or with another miner or several. However, I found the following:

April 25 1879 Liberty Tribute: Mr. Charles Creek, with his handsome new bride is in from Nevada, visiting his parents, Uncle Jake and his lady. Mr. Creek left home 29 years ago, returned 4 years ago, after an absence of 25 years, tarried some time and then was off again. He goes back to Nevada in about a month.
___________________________________________________________________

Mortality schedule for 1880 US Census shows Minnie died of pyemia, displaying as indigestive gastritis. The entry is:
{Creek, M. M., 29, F, W, married, Canada, England, England, Kept House, died in Jan (1880), Endo-Gastritis Pyemia, 6, Attending Physician: J. R. N. Owen.}

Questions asked in the mortality schedules: Deceased's name, Sex, Age, Color (White, black, mulatto), Whether widowed, Place of birth (state, territory, or country), Month in which the death occurred, Profession, occupation, or trade, Disease or cause of death, Number of days ill, Parents' birthplaces (added in 1870),
Place where disease was contracted and how long the deceased was a resident of the area (added in 1880)

Pyemia was also known as "child bed fever" and was very difficult, if not impossible, to cure in the best of locations, but certainly not in some little mining town in 1880.

It is to be remembered, Minnie gave birth in 1880 to Florence Creek. After waiting 50 years to marry, proudly display his wife to his family back in Missouri, and finally father a child, Charles Younger Creek lost his young bride to a raging infection commonly known as "child bed fever" which was impossible to cure without benefit of modern medicine and antibiotics. [MEC].

From the information regarding her nation of birth (Canada), I found a census record for James McCreary (aged 40, born Ireland) and a Minnie (aged 20, born Canada) and their two little sons in the 1870 Census:

1870 United States Federal Census
Name: James McCreary
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1830
Age in 1870: 40
Birthplace: Ireland
Home in 1870: Amelia, Baker, Oregon
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Eldorado
Household Members: Name Age
James McCreary 40
Minnie McCreary 20
Frank McCreary 3
Wm McCreary 1

In the 1880 Census for Clay County, Missouri, (enumerated 8 Jun 1880) I find the following entry for Charles Younger Creek's elder sister, Sarah married to Phillip Ebertz, who has a couple of McCreary boys in her household with the notation: "No kin, living here" and for a 5-month-old infant Jacob L. Creek the notation "here for a little while." Could this be the infant of the recently-departed Minnie McCreary Creek and two of her little boys?

1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Philip Ebrty
Home in 1880: Platte, Clay, Missouri
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1828
Birthplace: Prussia
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's Name: Sarah L.
Father's birthplace: Prussia
Mother's birthplace: Prussia
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Farmer
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Household Members: Name Age
Philip Ebrty 52
Sarah L. Ebrty 51
Cathrin Ebrty 20
Wallis Ebrty 16
Cieath Ebrty 15
Thomas H. B. McCarry 10
James F. McCarry 7
Jacob L. Creek 5M

I would love to have contact from you. Perhaps in the intervening years you've answered some of the questions.

Melinda

THOMPSON family in Eureka circa 1880's

Following was developed using info from various family sources:

Thomas Ebbe THOMPSON; Birth: KY?, death: Rocklin, Placer, CA
Spouse: Ida Alice CANNON; Birth: abt 1857, La Salle county, IL, death: abt 1897, Rocklin, Placer county, CA

Consistent with above is following from Overland Monthly, 1872, Vol 9, Issue 4, pgs 390-392; URL: http://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/moajrnl/browse.journals/over.htm...

3 Aug 1872 : Groom - THOMPSON, Thomas; Bride - CANNON, Ida A: PoM - Clear Creek, NV

Clear Creek, NV is in Carson City area.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Children for above marriage from various family sources:

--Edwin (Edward) (~1880-1897)
Two news articles describes Edwin's death in mine explosion (Pioneer Mine, Placer county, CA). First article indicates his aunt, Mrs W Brougher was living in Belmont, Nye County, NV, and he had a grandmother, two sisters, and a brother living in Auburn, CA. The second article indicates accident was on a Wednesday, 3 Feb (no year cited) and he was buried next to his mother. Based on this, accident was post-1896 because description of his gmother's (Julia Cannon) funeral in 1897 states that Edwin’s mother (Ida) died in the preceding winter. The years after 1896 where 3 Feb falls on a Wednesday are 1897, 1904 & 1909. Most likely date is 1897. Edwin’s buried in IOOF & Masonic Cemetery in Rocklin CA
.
--Laura (1885-1969)
Substantial info on her, including:

1900 Federal Census, Belmont Twp, Nye County NV, USA,
BROUGHER, Wilson/Head/W/M/Jul/1854/45/-/-/M/15/-/-/PA/PA/PA/County official/
BROUGHER, Julia/Wife/W/F/Apr/1862/38/M/15/4/4/IA/IA/NY/
THOMPSON, Laura/Niece/W/F/Sep/1885/14/S/-/-/-/NV/IA/IA/

SSDI: Laura SHAW/3 Sep 1885/Jun 1969/94707 (Berkeley, Alameda, CA/None Spec/551-34-1084/CA/

CADI: SHAW /Laura/T/09-03-1885/CANNON/-/F/-/ALAMEDA(60)/-/06-17-1969/551-34-1084/83 yr

Laura’s mother (Ida) died when she was a teenager. She went to live with her Aunt & Uncle, Julia & Wilson BROUGHER. Wilson, one of the original’s in the Tonopah strike, got elected to the State Legislature and moved to Virginia City, built a hotel and mansion, and subsequently moved to Oakland, CA. Laura apparently lived in Auburn for a time based on newspaper report about brother Edwin's death which indicates Edwin had grandmother, two sisters and a brother living in Auburn, CA at the time of his death. She is known to have married a SHAW.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The following was found in the 1880 Federal Census, NV, Eureka county, Eureka on p.173A:

> Mrs Ida THOMPSON/Wife/Married/Female/W/24/IA/NY/NY
> Eleby THOMPSON/son/Single/Male/W/7/NV/FL/IA
> Roy THOMPSON/son/Single/Male/W/5/NV/FL/IA
> Stella THOMPSON dau/Single/Female/W/3/NV/FL/IA
----------------------------------------------------------
The following was found in the 1883 Funeral Notice from unknown source:

"Funeral Notice, Died, At Eureka, Nevada, March 21, 1883
WALTER LEE, Youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas THOMPSON, aged two years and seven months. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Friday, March 23) at 3 o'clock........

Newspaper date presumed to be March 22, 1883, day after death. Remainder of notice is missing so location and other particulars of the burial are unknown.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Assuming the Thomas and Ida in above are the same individuals, correlating the info seems to result in following family in Eureka in 1883, just prior to the death of Walter Lee:

Thomas Ebbe THOMPSON, Birth in Ky or FL, death ?
Spouse: Ida Alice CANNON, Birth: abt 1857 in IL or IA, ,death ?
Married 1872
Children
Eleby THOMPSON, Birth abt 1873 in NV, death before or after 1897*
Roy THOMPSON, Birth abt 1875 in NV, death before or after 1897*
Stella THOMPSON, Birth abt 1877 in NV, death after 1897*
Walter Lee THOMPSON, Birth abt 1880 in NV, death 1884 in Eureka NV
Edwin (Edward), Birth abt 1882 in ??, death 1897 in CA
Laura, Birth 3 Sep 1885, death 17 Jun 1969, Berkeley, Alameda, CA

*Based on brother Edwin’s death article.
Birth years pattern indicates first child born about a year after marriage and subsequent births every 2-3 years.

Would be interested in any insights such as to family's arrival in and departure from Eureka, whether death of Eleby or Roy occured during period family was there, and similar. Also interested in any burial info for Walter Lee or brother(s) if death occured while in Eureka.

Thanks

Vern D

Hello,
My name is Don Howell and i live in KY.
I'm presently trying to track down a long lost sister to my 3rd great-grandmother Emily Gregory.
Emily's sister Missouri "Dude" Gregory was born about 1835 in KY disapeared from Graves County, KY sometime between the 1850-1860 census. I know from an old letter she moved west and settled in Virginia City in 1862 and "ran" a Bath House in Hamilton, White Pine Co., NV in 1870. I also found an old photograph while digging through some of my great-Aunt's photos. According the the photographers stamp on this CDV she was also in the Eureka, NV area and i also found in the online marriage records a lady named Missouri Gregory married a Thomas J. White on Dec. 13, 1874 in Eureka . So i'm assuming this is her.

So far i can not find anything on them after the marriage. I've checked the 1880 census but found nothing. Can anyone help me track her down out there? I've attached her photo taken in Eureka in also.

Thanks for your time,

Don Howell
Baldwin, Saratoga Co., N.Y. for his 1870 purchase on Washington St. William Baldwin was married to Sarah Morrison so I am guessing that G.G. is a relation. Her father was Daniel.
Any help?

Hello! I think that my father (William "Bill" Raymond Travelli/Buckskin) was around during this time, and that Bruffy was a good friend of his. I remember a Bruffy who came to Reno during the early 1950s, who stopped and visisted with my father and mother, and who was on his way to the University of Nevada, Reno, to pull his son out of school, since all he did at the time was party and not concentrate on his studies! I was a small girl at the time, but I do remember the conversation. Also, I think that my father dated Ida Bruffy. I would love to contact any of the Bruffy family that might remember my dad or his family...I am an only child, trying to put together a Travelli/Buckskin genealogy for my daughter. Please, if anyone has any information, please contact me directly.
My father and his brother Jim used to sit in the evening and talk about their younger days in Mineral Hill, and Eureka, etc.,
talking about dances, the ranches, etc. My father's sister,
Hattie Carletti Clark, and his brother, Jim Buckskin, have passed away, as has my father, but I have no early history of Mineral Hill and my family. Their mother was a Margaret "Maggie" Hanes/Cortez Travelli/Buckskin. Complicated, but since she was Shoshone and English or Irish, we believe that she or her mother took the name Cortez from the town they were either living in or close to at the time. I have NO information at all, and actually visited Eureka a year to two ago, and found nothing. We visited the Alpha Ranch, which my family lived at for some years, and almost got to Mineral Hill...it was early spring, and the mud and snow were too much for our car at the time. HELP!!!

Linda Newbrough (Travelli/Buckskin)
Anacortes, WA
lmnewbro@msn.com
Searching for any information regarding the Buckskin family...1850 on...they lived in Mineral Hill, Mineral, Palisade, and the Alpha Ranch at one time. In and around Eureka too.
My father (William Raymond (Bill) Buckskin) and his brother (Jim (James) Buckskin) were friends with the Bruffy family, and other old families in the area. Other names related to Buckskin are Cortez (Maggie (Margaret Dean Cortez Buckskin), Travelli, etc. Besides my father and his brother Jim, the other children were Hattie, (who married a Pete Carletti), Sylvia, Rose, Webb, Mary. Any help/information would be welcome...we have so little to go on.

Please email me / Linda (Travelli-Buckskin) Newbrough
lmnewbro@msn.com

Thank you for that information! I drove through Eureka and Palisade a couple of years ago, and did indeed find Peter Carletti's grave in Palisade. Now if I could just find Joseph Travelli's grave in Mineral Hill! I'll keep on trying...the Buckskins were a part of that early pioneer history of the area, and my father Bill and his brother Jim used to sit in the evenings and tell great stories about their growing up...the ranchs, the families, the dances, etc. Nevada is very much a part of my family history.

My grandmother had a sign from a mine I beleive she said it was in Nevada called Ruby Hill. So mining was what moved the family while in the states. Then mining moved them to Rossland Canada.

George F. Padelford was born October 1827 in Malahide, Middlesex Co., Canada [Swanson, Viola (Ashman), Autobiographies of Fox Valley Pioneers, (Elgin, IL: Elgin Genealogical Society, 1981), 139.]

He was the son of Manly Padelford (b. 1778 in Taunton, MA; d. 1848 in Elgin, IL) and Thankful Crapo (b. 1780 in Freetown, MA; d. 1862 in Elgin IL). George moved with his family to Elgin, IL, in 1843; he went California shortly after 1850, and was recorded there in the 1860 census. From there he seems to have moved to Nevada--other than the accounts of his founding Elko in 1868 or 1869 I haven't found any further reference to him.

TRAVELLI in Mineral Hill/Palisade

I'm looking for any information regarding my Grandfather, "Joseph" (I think) Travelli, who ran a boarding house/saloon in Mineral Hill, NV around 1880 to 1910-11. I have a copy of his obituary which states his death in Mineral Hill in 1911. Our family history is really sketchy, so any information would be of great help! He also was the postmaster for Mineral and Mineral Hill at that time.
Thank you all so much...
Linda Newbrough
