I visited Goldfield in 2005 and found the County Recorder's office to be immensely helpful and worth a visit in itself. Can't remember if there were directories but I did find addresses for that period. The public library's online catalogue lists a couple of directories for 1906 and 1907.

Esmeralda County Auditor/Recorder
PO Box 458
Goldfield, NV 89013
Phone: 775-485-6337
Fax: 775-485-6338
Karen Scott, Auditor/Recorder
Email: esmar1@frontiernet.net
Thanks so much for a quick response. I know about the stream because that's the only Trail Creek that comes up on the USGS website and listed in Humboldt, Esmeralda, Nye, and Elko counties.

What I'm looking for is the location of the post office known as Trail Creek as this was the family's address in 1905. Most likely in someone's home, but a post office nonetheless and likely no longer exists.

Is there a listing somewhere of "extinct" post offices in Nevada? Many states have such a listing, but does Nevada have one?

I tried MapQuest (which I don't like and never have) and no results were produced because MapQuest only produces results for what exists today, and not yesterday. That's why I use the USGS website. The unfortunate part is that the U.S. Census Bureau has disconnected the link to their maps from the USGS search results, and those maps were the very best and I really miss them.

Thanks again.

There is a Trail Creek stream in Esmeralda county, it appears to be north of Dyer and south of Basalt, west of highway 264. Perhaps in Inyo National Forest. There may have been a small settlement by that name or a camp ground.

Type in "mapqest" in your search box and then "Trail Creek Nevada" when you get to their page. It will give you four or five Trail Creek hits, look a number 1.

Can someone pinpoint the location of Trail Creek, believed to be in Esmeralda Co., NV?

I have an inscription in a book that says --
From Ada to Mama, Trail Creek, Nevada, Nov. 11, 1905.

Of course, the next problem is identifying the family name. At the moment I haven't a clue beyond this inscription.

I tried the 1900 Esmeralda Co., NV, census for the name Ada, hoping to find a daughter around 15 years old, give or take 5 years, but came up empty.

And the 1910 census has 3 daughters named Ada, but all were too young for the book's 1905 inscription. Of the remaining 8 Adas, Ada O. Meek, b. ca. 1891 in OK, is the best possibility. She was the wife of William A. Meek and appears to have been newly married. However, LDS IGI has that they were married in 1909 in Craig Co., OK. So I'm back to Square One.

JEPPERSON APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION

There seem to be several pretty good researchers working Goldfield. I am hoping that one of you may be able to help me. My great grandfather, Johan E. Jepperson was born in Denmark, orphaned at age 8, in an orphanage for awhile, then apprenticed out at 12 and at age 13 stowed away on a ship and came to America. He wound up in Goldfield in 1905-7 or so. He was a gambler and miner. He died in Goldfield in 1954 and was buried in the Knights of Pythias Section.
I found him on the 1920 census of Goldfield and he is listed as an Alien. On the 1930 census there is a notation "Pa" which I was told means that he had applied for citizenship and means "Papers Pending". My problem is that I cannot find these papers. I tried writing to the then-Co. Clerk in Goldfield and she seemed to know nothing about naturalization papers. It is my understanding that it is the application papers that have the most information. Do you have any idea where these papers may have been filed or where they may be today?
My great grandparents, John "Pop" and Esther "Jepp" Jepperson ran the County Hospital for many years. It was across the street from the new firehouse where the "annex" is. I own the four dormer house north of the new firehouse. I am hoping that someone has, or can find, where I can get copies of "Pop's" application for naturalization.
Diane Jepperson Nichols

Your Grandmother and her son are side by side and have what looks to be a bronze headstone but as the graves are surrounded by farm wire fencing even though there are gates I could not open either to get close to the graves. The stone is covered with dirt so could not read half of it. All I could read was William M. with Beloved Brother below . In a couple weeks I will go back and get my daughter to open one fence. Will take pictures and if I have your e-mail could send them.
D. Lubow

Loubach and the July date but it is just stuck in the side of another plot. The line she is in has only one stone and two readable plaques. All other mounds have but a wood cross and what plaques are there are unreadable. That is all I can tell you.

Goldfield is now the current County Seat but Goldfield was not founded until 1902.
So your Grandfather is now in some other county.
Counties kept their own death records (badly) so the State took over in 1911. So they are no help to you.
You might try Mineral County.
Good Luck

I am researching the infamous newspaper man J.M. DORMER and have gotten extensive information from Nevada newspaper history books and online historical newspapers and census records. What I'd like to get are vital records: He married "Belle" around the time he lived in Esmeralda County and I believe his son John was born in the are as well. Are there vital records for the early years of this county? You help is greatly appreciated!

A board member sent me a private email with exactly what I wanted. When I get a chance I'll post a small story about him for an online record.
Chancy

Hi Robin,

I'm Luella's granddaughter. She married my grandfather, John O'Keefe, in 1902 and they lived in Goldfield. They separated in about 1920. I don't think they were divorced but they might have been. She moved with her five children to Los Angeles. She's on the 1920 census in San Francisco and so is he but he is also on the 1920 census in Goldfield.

My aunt Pat had pictures of your Grandfather. She said he was one of the nicest people she had ever known. I might add that from the picture he was also a very handsome man.
I'll have to check my census but I think he lived in Los Angeles at one time.

I imagine you have the book "Never A Ghost Town" by Victoria Ford. A seller on EBay told me about it. His Dad worked with Pat Chiatovich. Small World. I have contact with another cousin but don't want to post it.

Have never been to the ranch or Goldfield but would like to. However I don't think my husband would be very interested and I'm not confortable renting a car and driving myself.

My E-mail is patkayf@aol.com. I'd like to hear from you directly rather than through the board.

There are several Chiatovich's buried behind (West) of the Knights of Pythias section in the Goldfield Cemetery. That section is where the road begins to form a loop on the west end. I don't recall the names, but George Gumbmann is buried next to them and, I believe may have been related. I went to school with George when we were kids. You might try writing to his wife, Starla Gumbmann in Goldfield, NV. I doubt that you need a PO Box as the town is so small that everybody knows everybody else and the PO is the only place one can get their mail. I just noticed the graves because my family is buried in the Knights of Pythias section.
Diane Jepperson Nichols

I do remember a Farnsworth family in Goldfield in the late 1940's and the 1950's. I believe the father was Clarence and they had sons, Clarence "Boots" and younger son who, I believe had had polio. I think that was Robert. It seems to me that after we left Goldfield that Robert was hit by a car and may have been killed. This would have been after 1956. I think the family may have moved shortly after that. They lived a couple of blocks down a hill and west of us. I went to school with "Boots" and may have a picture somewhere.....maybe in my yearbook if not others. He was a couple of years older than me, but there were so few kids in Goldfield at that time that we all ran around together. I went to 4th grade in Goldfield and then Frosh and first half of my Soph year in Tonopah while living in Goldfield. In between we always spent part of the summer and most holidays with our great grandparents in Goldfield.
If the family with "Boots" and Robert is the one you are looking for, let me know and I will see if I can unearth some pictures.
Also check out the Reno newspapers. They are online now and Goldfield news was always in them. You can type in a name and the internet site will search the papers for you.
Diane Jepperson Nichols

Re: Marriage & Birth records

There were no birth or death records kept in Nevada until 1887 when the first vital statistics law was passsed by the Nevada State Legislature. Prior to that date, the only possible sources available for proof of birth are newspapers or baptismal records.

Birth and death records from 1887 to the present are recorded in each county, either in the office of the County Recorder of County Health Office. The Nevada State Office of Vital Statistics has birth and death records from 1911 to the present for all counties.

Nevada State Library and Archives has some records for marriage and divorces. The Nevada State library has marriage records for Douglas, Lyon, Ormsby, Storey and Washoe county for 1862-1900. The latter are available on microfilm and are for research only. Certified copies should be obtained from the office of records.

This is from the website: www.nevadaculture.org

At the top you will see: Search. Click on it and then...
Key in: birth death marriage divorce records to get complete printout.

That is a great website. You can also access Nevada census records from 1860 to 1920 and it is free. There is also a search function. Lots of great Nevada information on the website.

Did you find Belle Dormer age 42 born July 1857, in California, and John S age 11, born Nov 24, 1888 in Nevada.
in the 1900 census for Alameda California? It said she has been married 25 years with four children born and 3 alive. Sounds like your Belle and John.

World War 1 records have: Jack S. Dormer born 11/24/1888 in Carson City Nevada with wife and 2 children. He is a lino-type operator in Glendale California.

Good luck in your search.

Regards, Arline in Reno.

Greetings,
I am Cecil's grandson Robin. This url might be of some assistance: http://www.croatians.com/CLAN-CHIATOVICH-S.htm
I remember hearing talk as a child of "Aunt Luella." I remember little of what was said, but it seems she lived down in or near Tonopah. Cecil lived in Reno. He was married to my grandmother Hazel Clark of Los Angeles c. 1916. That union produced two children Cecil Jr. "Snookie" who died c. 1918 and Norma Jane (my mother)in 1919. They divorced c. 1920. Cecil married Vivian Truscott in 1929. They had one son Ronnie who died in childhood. They also adopted Vivian's nephew Thomas "Tommy" when his parents died in an accident. Last I knew Tom lived near the old ranch and was restoring it. Norma died in 2001. Cecil died c. 1980. I hope some of this might help,
Robin Hasting

Are there any other spellings for this name. I can find Harbolt, is that possable? Again First Names would be helpful
and or spouse name.
