1900 Sheridan Co., Liberty Precinct location

Does anyone know where the "Liberty Precinct" was in Sheridan County, Nebraska referenced in the 1900 census? I am seeking the burial place of a Mary Shefneer who died sometime between the 1900 census and 1910 census. In 1900, she and her husband William Sheffener (sp.) are found in Liberty Precinct, Sheridan Co., NE and by 1910, she is gone and he is living in Reeves Precinct, Cherry Co., NE. I have not been able to find her grave in the Mullen, NE cemetery where the rest of the family is buried, so it leaves me to wonder if maybe she is buried in Sheridan County.

There was a Sheffner family at Hay Springs that were cousins so possibly its up that direction?
I am looking for the area of Germany that the following people came from; I am assuming that if anybody else has ancestors that migraged in the same time period that they very well may from the same area in Germany.

Charles Witt was born in Germany in 1876, and married Emma Kaiser who was born in Germany in 1881.

I did not know when the Kaisers immigrated, or anything else about the family except that Emma was born in 1881, and she had a child in 1900 with Charles in Sheridan County Nebraska, and they are listed in the Milan census.

The Charles Witt family migrated from Germany between 1877 and 1882. Charles Witts father was John Witt, and mother was Ricka. John was born 1850 in Germany, Ricka (mothers name may be incorrect) was born in 1855 in Germany, and Charles was born in 1876 in German also.

Identity of 5 men in this photo, one believed to be Quartus M. Skinner (1869-1949)

I found your name by visiting the Cherry County site on U.S. GenWeb and have enjoyed looking through the pages there. While attending a Skinner family reunion last summer in Cherry County, Nebraska, my first cousin and I came across this photo of 5 men. I believe the man in the upper right is my grandfather, Quartus Monroe Skinner (1869-1949), but no family members had any idea of the identities of the others. Do you have any idea what period of time this photograph came from or have any idea how I might find out who these men might be? Do you think they might be businessmen of some kind? Thanks for your time.

Lynda (Skinner) Turner
lynda_turner72@yahoo.com
Found an old obit in family Bible. However, part of it is missing. Maybe someone can help me with this. Obit reads:
John W. Estabrook was born Nov. 6, 1849 at Munson, Ind. He was married to Sarah Trout March 11, 1877. Together they came west in the year 1885 and settled near Gordon, Neb. being among the first people to come to that section of the tate. Later they moved with their family to the vicinity of Johnstown where they made their home until the time of writing. To this happy union were born 5 sons and 2 daughters, 2 sons of whom have preceded him to the Land of Rest. Deceased joined the Christian church at the early age of 15 years but in later life connected himself with the M.E. Church to which doctrine he was ever faithful unto the end. He passed out of this life Dec. 30, 1913 at 5:30 a.m. at the family home in Johnstown, aged 64 years, 1 month and 24 days. He was a kind father and faithful companion and held the highest respect of all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, three..........

and it ends there. Do now know where Johnstown is, what newspaper or nothing. Can anyone tell me if this Johnstown in near Gordon?? Cannot find Johnstown, Neb. on the map. Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated. You may e-mail me direct or post here. Thank you

I am attempting to determine the fate of Eddie C Lawrence, son of William Howe Lawrence

I know that he [age 44] married Ruth B Seeley [age 32] in 1933 in Sheridan County and that they had at least one son (Kenneth, born ca. 1934).

CLUES:
*Ruth Lawrence was noted in the 1934 obit for her younger brother - "in Hay Springs, NE."

*Ruth Lawrence was noted in her half sister's 1940 obit - living in Harrison Co, Iowa

*Ruth was noted in her stepfather's 1944 obit with the name of her second husband and living in Wisconsin.

These clues suggests that either they divorced or Eddie died sometime between 1934 and 1943.

The only other thing I know about him is that according to a brief biography about his brother in the "Centenial History of Hay Springs" - Eddie had preceded him is death and his brother died in the 1970's.

He was not listed in the SSDI, which is not unusual since that index is date restricted and is not all inclusive.

If anyone knows what happened to him: his separation from his wife or his death, please advise.

Gary Kartchner
SLC, UT

Have found online an inscription which reads "Crofutt, Henry's baby boy-1910" Henry was my grandfather, he was living there with his family at that time, but this would be a baby we have no record of.
SANDELL, Frank Otto 1859-1932 Obit

Frank Otto Sandell was born in Sweden Jan 15, 1859, and passed away at the home of his son-in-law, N. S. Tausan in Clinton February 4, 1932 at the age of 73 years and 19 days.
Mr. Sandell came to the United States in 1878 being at the time 19 years of age. He lived for a time in Connecticut, but in 1884 he came to Omaha, moving from that place to Sheridan County. He was married to Nellie Swanson in 1886, and settled on a homestead northwest of Gordon where he lived as a farmer over thirty years.
Shortly after his marriage, both he and his wife were converted to the Christian faith and were active and faithful in promoting the work of Christianity in their neighborhood. Mrs. Sandell preceded him in death, passing away in 1895. In the year 1901 he was married to Mrs. Susan Salisbury, a widow with five children, and proved himself afather indeed to the children, and solicitous for their welfare. The mother passed away in 1910.
Mr. Sandell lived a consistent Christian life and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the M.E. Church of Gordon but has passed on and is now a member of the Church Triumphant.
He leaves to mourn, the daughter, Mrs. N. S. Tausan (Hattie Salisbury Tausan) of Clinton, the boys, Vern Salisbury of Gordon, Clarence Salisbury of East Liverpool, Ohio, Earl Salisbury of Rushville, a sister Mrs. Minnie Walstron, two nieces, Mrs. Frank Peterson and Mrs. Henry Possehl of Broken Bow and a brother and a sister living in Sweden, besides a host of friends.
The deceased was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon, Febr. 6th, services being conducted by Rev. O. P. Bottom at the M. E. Church in Clinton
Thus another of the pioneers has gone to his reward.
THE GORDON JOURNAL, Feb. 11, 1932
Hi,
Is there anyone who has a copy of "Retracing Old Trails", written by Frank O'Rourke? From what I understand, it contains the author's recollections working on the Spade Ranch in 1910. My Grandparents, Henry and Sophia CROFUTT lived and worked there about the same time and would love to know if my family name is mentioned in this book. Thank you.

Patricia Owens-OH

Hi,
Does anyone know if Hallowell Cemetery still exists? I found online at Find A Grave an inscription which said "Crofutt-Henry's baby boy-1910. The person who posted the inscription also said "He was born without eyes". Henry Crofutt was my grandfather, and lived in that area at the time. We have never seen any evidence of a baby boy born in 1910, and why is just Henry's name on the inscription and not my grandmother's? Am beginning to think maybe he fathered a child with another woman? If anyone lives near this cemetery would love to have a picture. Also, what are the odds of a death certificate existing for this child's death in 1910? We do have info from grandpa's Bible that they had a baby daughter who they named Esther who was born May 27, 1910 and died June 3, 1910 in that area, and where could she be buried?
Thanks for any help. I'm desperate!!!!!!!!

Patricia Owens-Wellington, OH
MARTHA "MATTIE" P OR BENNER SCHERTZBERG

Looking for any information on Martha "Mattie" P (Scull) SCHERTZBERG or her family. Mattie was born in 1870 in Iowa and can't be found in either the 1900 or 1910 US census. The 1920 US census shows her living with her husband Benner Schertzberg and daughter Augusta in Wolf Creek, Sheridan Co, NE. The 1930 census shows Mattie as widowed and living with her daughter in Rushville, Sheridan Co, NE. The census shows Benner living in Saunders County, NE in 1900 and Saline County, NE in 1910, and single both years.

After the 1930 census, the trail on Mattie is cold until a family letter in the 1940's where she's now married to Charles M Veach and living in Seattle, WA. He was born in NC and died in Seattle in 1951, and she died there in 1963. Her daughter Augusta also lived in Washington state as late as 2003, but the trail is cold on her as well and she is most likely deceased.

Questions:

1) What was the date (1920-30) of Benner Schertzberg's death and where is he buried? I'm assuming somehwere in Sheridan Co.

2) Where was Mattie between the 1930 census and her 1940's family letter?

3) Where and when did Mattie connect with Charles Veach and why or when did they move to Washington state? Does Charles Veach have a connection to Sheridan County or to Nebraska?

Lots of information and lots of questions. Any help there in Sheridan County??

Thanks in advance.

Brad Bradfield

LOOKUP REQUEST

Is anyone available to do records research at the Sheridan County courthouse?? I'm looking for any or all of the following:

1) Any property records for the farm owned by Benner and Mattie Schertzberg. According to Mattie's daughter, this was "12 miles NW of Rushville," which I assume is still in Sheridan County. I don't need the formal or official records, but copies of the basic information on the original purchase, the legal description (twp, range, section, etc), and the ultimate disposition of the property would be most helpful. Benner died in 1924, and Mattie apparently owned the property for a number of years after that. My guess is that Mattie ultimately lost this property to taxes as so many others did back then. The name of the current owner of the property would be interesting as well, as I might try to visit the property some day.

2) A marriage record for Mattie Schertzberg's later marriage to a man named Veach, first name probably Charles. Mattie Schertzberg is still listed as widowed in the 1930 US census, so the marriage was after that, but the marriage didn't last long and in about 1938-39 Mattie moved to Washington state where she lived the rest of her life, dying in 1963. It's doubtful that Mattie ever divorced Veach.

If anyone is available to help me I would be very greatful.

Regards,

Brad
July 1891, maybe june through August. But about the 10th to the 19th can't read date well that we have. Our grandfather, while working for a railroad fell off the train and was killed.

Some nice women a while ago sent me a copy. But someone took it from my collection

It was a nice long article written on his death. E. A. Newton or Ed Newton or Edgar Allen Newton had three children in Dawes Co. and a wife.. It read it body was taken to Wi. for burial. This article meant alot to us as a family. If any one can locate it. WE will reinburse your time and costs. Thank you

Candy
candymjacobson@netscape.net

Seeking information on Pittullo ancestors

I'm looking for information on my gr-gr-gr grandparents and my gr-gr grandparents. Records show that James Drysdale Pittullo, Francis Pittullo and Lorenzo Pittullo are buried in Sheridan. I'm hoping for any pictures or articles they may be in any stories. When they may have moved there? James Drysdale was in the Civil War if that helps.

Any information or advice on where I could search would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

George W. and Sarah J. Hamilton

I am trying to figure out where/when Sarah J. (Loudenback) Hamilton (b. 1853) died. She and her husband George lived in Colorado at the time of the 1910 census; in the 1920 census George was living in Sheridan County and was listed as a widower. I have not had luck from Colorado death records so think Sarah may have died in Nebraska between 1910 and 1920 in Nebraska. George was a minister so perhaps they moved to Nebraska for that reason. Thanks for any advice!

Thomas L. Trueax was born in Indiana on the 6th day of March 1856 and died in Gordon on April 9, 1930.
When only four years old his parents moved to Florence, Ne and later he lived in the Black Hills. He was a long-time resident of Sheridan county, homesteading south of here many years ago. He was married twice, two sons being born to the first marriage and two daughters to the second. One of these daughters died when a child, while the other, Mrs. Carl Grover helped in caring for her father at the last.
"Tom" Trueax as he was always known was an honest, law-abiding citizen, who helped to develop this great western country. While never possessed of great wordly means, he always prided himself in the fact that he kept his credit good and he was known as a man whose word was good. There was nothing mean of spiteful about him, and he leaves behind a large circle who will always remember his friendship and kindly disposition.
The funeral service was held at the Church of God and interment made in the Gordon cemetery.
Gordon Journal 4-17-1930

Eva Doyne Van Rossum was born on May 27,1917 in the vicinity of Gordon, Ne and departed this life at the home of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George van Rossum Sr., in Valley Junction, Iowa on April 13,1930.
Eva Doyne was a bright and cheerful child, endearing herself to all with whom she came in contact. She was a lover of Jesus, taking great interest in the Sunday school, which told her of Jesus and the Way to Heaven. It was her heart's delight to study the Bible stories and to sit at Jesus
feet and listen to His lifegiving Word. About two years ago, she contracted a sickness which caused leakage of the heart. Since that time she had been a patient sufferer, willingly bearing her pains and weaknesses.
A little over a year ago she moved with her grandparents to Iowa, thinking that a change of climate would be of help to her weakened condition. For a time she seemed greatly improved until recently other ailments set in, and although all that medical science and loving hands could do to save her precious young life, the angel of death bore her to Him who sayeth "Suffer the little children to come unto me, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven".
She leaves to mourn her death, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Van Rossum, Jr., and one brother, David Van Rossum, all of Gordon. Also her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Van Rossum, Sr., of Valley Junction, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Christie of Montrose, Colo.
The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church and her remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Gordon cemetery.
Gordon Journal 4-24-1930

Mrs. Geo. Ross died Monday and was laid to rest at Hay Springs on Wednesday. It is with sadness that we chronicle this event. The editor of this paper knew Mrs. Ross more than forty years ago when she was Miss Agnes Miller. She was married to Geo. Ross and they resided on a farm down in Dodge county and for a couple of years and we made our home with them. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ross were the finest kind of people and were highly respected by everybody who knew them. Mr. Ross passed away some three years ago and Mrs. Ross has been making her home with her son Don and family south of Hay Springs.
Russhville Standard 5-31-1929

No pen can describe the sorrow that passed over Rushville Saturday morning, June 11,1921, when the word was passed around that William, only child of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Plantz had closed his eyes in that sleep from which there is no awakening except on the Golden Shore.
A few days previous to his death William received a wound on one of his fingers from the discharge of a blank cartridge. The wound was not deep and was properly treated, and every indication pointed to nothing more than a slight wound which would take only a few day to overcome. A few days after the unfortunate accident William began to experience an unusual feeling and called his mothers attention to it. A doctor was immediately summoned and the case was pronounced serious. Dr. Dwyer of Gordon was called into consultation and everything that was possible to do was done, but to no avail. Tetanus (lock-jaw) set in, from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning anxious watchers waited and hoped, and
medical assistance was ever present, yet, in spite of all skill could do the Spirit took flight at an early hour Saturday morning, June 11. The funeral was held from the home in the presence of a large gathering of sympatizing friends. Many beautiful flowers were brought by many friends and placed on the casket and in the room where the lifeless form of William Plantz lay in its last sleep.
William was born in Rushville on the 18th day of October, 1908, and would have reached his thirteenth birthday had he lived until that date this year. The sorrowing parents have the deep sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their dear child.
Rushville Standard Gordon Journal 6-23-1921
