William Kelly and Eva Jane Dennis were my great-great grandparents. Their daughter, Laura Kelly was my great grandmother, and married Ervin Leonard. If you go to the Rock County Historical Society website on their "Contacts" page under "Marriage Lookup".

You will find that the County Clerk is willing to do some free lookup for you and can you ask about how to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate if that is where they are married.

There is an excellent history "A Genealogy of the Robert Newton Turpin Family" by Marcia Stewart and Letha Turpin Stewart.

Mary Ellen Leonard (12 Apr 1856 in New Hampshire to 12 Jan 1926 in Nebraska) married Robert Newton Turpin (10 Jun 1821 in Virginia to 18 May 1893) on 16 Sep 1893 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Michael and Mary Leonard, both immigrants from Ireland. It was his second marriage. They lived in Greene County, IA until about 1878 when they moved to Rock County, NE. They had ten children:

Francis Charles Turpin 1874 to 1923, Julia T. Turpin 1875 to 1960, James Robert Turpin 1877 to 1943, Susan Turpin 1879 to 1917, John Michael Turpin, 1882 to 1945, Polly Pearl, Turpin 1884 to 1936, William Watson Turpin 1886 to 1941, Leta Arvillia Turpin 1888 to 1963, Newton Turpin, 1890 to 1969, and Nellie Turpin 1893 to 1966.

Francis "Charley" Turpin (06 Jul 1874 to 05 Dec 1923) married Cora Mae Miller (27 Sep 1877 to 20 Apr 1905) abt 1895. They had five children: Anna Eudora Turpin (19 Feb 1896 to UNKNOWN), Robert Newton Turpin 1897 to 1966, Earl Elvin Turpin, 1899 to 1986, Laura Edna Turpin, 1901 to UNKNOWN, and Susie Adella Turpin 1904 to 1904.

Cora Mae Miller was the daughter of Tom A. Miller and Margaret Ann Vert, who was the daughter of Thomas Vert and Rebecca UNKNOWN.

After Robert Newton Turpin died of a gunshot wound (indeed from a dispute with his neighbor over a horse), Mary Ellen married James Edward Estlack (07 Apr 1859 to 12 Nov 1919) on 08 Apr 1902 in Butte, Nebraska. They moved to Haigler NE where they both died and are buried in the Haigler Cemetery.

Two Farmers Fatally Quarrel Over Horse
NEWPORT, Neb., May 11. -- Rock county has had a series of accidents and shooting affrays that will, if not soon stopped, throw it in the front rands of notoriety. ... A shooting affray occurred today twelve miles north of town near the Niobrara river. A farmer named Lewis Goochey had some horses stray away during th enight and on going to hunt them he found them in a pasture belonging to another man named Newton Turpin an old resident of the river flats. Upon finding his horses grazing in the pasture he quietly drove them out of the open gate, but before he got started home Turpin called out to him someting that he (Goochey) could not understand, as the wind was blowing furiously at the time,but when the man with the horses did not do as he was told Turpin raised his gun and fired. Turpin's gun was hardly raised before Goochey pulled his own and fired, the shot taking effect in Turpin's stomach. Goochey came to town tis afternoon and gave himself up to jistice of the peace. Both men have large families. Tuprin is not dead yet.

Omaha World Herald May 20, 1893

NEWPORT, Neb., May 19. -- Newton Turpin, the man who was shot by Louis Gouchey May 11 on the Nibrara river north of Newport, died this morning from the effects of his wounds. Gouchey is under the espienzga of th county officials today, or until he coroner's inquest can return a verdict.

Mary Ellen LEONARD TURPIN ESTLACK Obituary Haigler News Jan. 22, 1926

Mary Ellen Leonard Estlack was born April 12th, 1856, at Haveral, Vermont, and died Jan. 18th, 1926 at Haigler, Nebr.,
When she was seven years of age she moved with her parents to Iowa where she remained until Sept. 16th, 1873 at which time she was united in marriage to Robert Newton Turpin, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1881 they moved to Nebraska and settled in Rock county. To this union was born ten children, five boys and five girls.
Two of the children Francis C. and Susie preceeded their mother in death, also her husband, Robert Newton Turpin, died on May 18, 1893.
On April 8th, 1902 Mrs. Turpin was married to Jas. Edward Estlack, at Butte Nebr., and it was in January 1909 they came to live at Haigler. On Nov. 12th, 1919 Mr. Estlack passed on to his reward.
The children are: Mrs. Julia Jurges, of Everett, Wash; James Robert Turpin, of Mariaville, Neb; John M. Turpin of Mariaville, Neb; Mrs. Polly Pearl Watson, of Pt. Angeles Wash; William WatsonTurpin, of Mariaville, Nebr; Lettie Arvelle Turpin, of Los Angeles, Calif; Newton Turpin, of Haigler, Nebr. and Mrs. Nellie Clark, of Stratton, Nebr.
The deceased is survived by twenty three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Leota May Shaden Sybrant Obits

Leota May Shadden
Leota May Shadden was born on May 1, 1910 to Edward Klink and Della Coleman. She passed away on July 10 1988 at the Vallay Crest Convalescent Home in Spokane, Wa.
Leota Spent most of her childhood living in the Duff and Rose area. She married Elton Sybrant; to them one son, Donald was born; he died in KOrea Leota later married leo Shadden on March 19, 1945 in Ainsworth. They moved around working on construction for, a few years and then bough land north of Ainsworth and built their home there. Leo passed away on March 8, 1986. Leota went out to Spokane, WA to live with her brother Wallace until the time of her death.
Leota was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Russell and Llody Klink; infant sister, Marcella, and husband Leo. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sister, Isabelle Vargason of Ainsworth and Stattah Farris of Edgerton, WY; one brother, Wallace Klink of Spokane. WA, nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 23, 1988 at the loch Funeral Home in Ainsworth with Rev. E. Allen Magill officating. Music was furnished by Margaret Sybrant and Howard Swinney. Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery at Rose Casket bearers were Wayne Cullison, Dean Smith, Warren Vaughan, Gary Wolfe, Tuie Johnson, and Bill Gudgel.
Arrangments were under the direction of the Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth.

A new item was added to the Rock County NEGenWeb Project. It is the beginning of many booklets of "1917-1941 Rock County, Nebraska Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Licenses" which to have some valuable information for a genealogical researcher. The license has the license owner's name, age, weight, and where he lived in that year of issue.

I had some short-lived connection in this county because of my Grandfather
during the 1920's. Nevertheless, I do not live in Rock County but can do
some census lookup if you desire that of me.

No Corp's in 124 Nebraska cities that I checked. There are 2 SHELDON'S at Spaulding, NE, 3 SHELDON'S at North Loup, NE, 1 SHELDON at Grand Island, NE. There were others that ended their SHEL-ton, -den.. If you will email me, I can give you the other spelled names and the towns where they are listed.

Rock County History

My great grandfather, Martin Leahy, homesteaded land near Hammond, Ne in the 1880's. His son George continued to ranch in that area until his death in the late 1920's. Is there any mention of this family in the Rock History book? If not, I would like to contribute the information I have.

Cornelia Bilstein born 3/8/1856 was my gr gr grandmother Clara's sister. Cornelia (Nellie) and Henry are on the 1880 census in Chicago living with her parents. At that time some of the Bilstein children lived in Chicago and some went west to Iowa and then Nebraska. Cornelia had 11 ( 6 brothers and 5 sisters) and 3 half brothers. I have a lot of pictures that say Steins studio on them.

I am researching Lewis Kelley and wife Elizabeth. They lived in Bassett from about 1882. Lewis was born 1847 in Canada and died 1913 in Rock Co. He married Elizabeth in New York. They had the following children:

1. John J. born abt 1870 in NY
2. Annie born abt 1873 in NY married George Niles
3. Sheldon born about 1879 in NY died 1966 Rock Co. married to Zelda Cotterill

4. William born 1886 died 1923 married Eva Dennis

5 Kittie born abt 1887

6 Dora born 1890 died 1980 she was married to Martin F. Spann. Her children were:

1a. Chantry E. Spann born 1912 died 1986
1b. Mark W. Spann born 1914 died 1986
1c. Charles born about 1918

I would very much appreciate any info about these people. I would also like contact with descendants of the family.
