I agree with checking with the Polk county clerk for a birth record, but it is highly likely you won't find one. Let me know if you need help with that. I do live in Polk county.
Otherwise a baptism/christening record would be your next best chance. I don't think Arthur was buried in Polk county, at least not in the cemeteries I've photographed. Sometimes a burial will give you a clue as to what church or denomination they were a member. Hope that helps.

There isn't any doubt of his birth date as it is recorded on his WWI Draft Registration card.

The Bureau of Land Management land patent records show to patents issued to Grossnicklaus family.
1. To Christian on 7/10/1873 in POlk Co, Township 15N, Range 2 West, Section 10, the South West Quarter of the section.

2. To Edward on 5/17/1897, Township 15N, Range 2 West, Section 30, the West half of the South East quarter of Section 30.

There are a number of family trees holding Arthur. One shows his father John Grossnicklaus was son of Christian, Edward was a son born 1862, died 1901. There were no patents to Huggler. John was living in Valley, Polk County during the 1880 Census.

Here is a topo map of the land obtained by Christian:
http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=14&X=77...
The red colored "10" is Section 10. A Section is one square mile in size and contains 640 acres. Christian obtained the South West Quarter (the bottom left quarter of that square. By zooming out (top left corner of the map), you can see Columbus, the county lines of Polk, Butler and Platte. Note the South Creek (in light blue), below it is the Clear Creek. From Section 10, Clear Creek is just north.

--Not that this helps much, but the info indicates Arthur was born in this area. But, it shows this area is not well populated...even today. For a birth in 1883, it is highly likely there were no records within the government. However, there might be a church record recorded...depending on if any of those were maintained. AND, if there was a local church in that area. MANY "if's."

Hi,

The State of Nebraska didn't require birth certificates until 1904. Some counties have registers of births before that date. Contact the Polk County Clerk, www.polkcounty.ne.gov/clerk.html and ask about early records. Successful Searching!

Do you know where in Polk county did he die? Or where he is buried. Most local libraries have their local newspapers on microfilm, so that's usually where to look for an obituary.
Findagrave has a William P. Warnick listed in the Polk Cemetery, so try obits at the Polk Library. You could call and ask before making a trip if you want. Stromsburg has some other newspapers on microfilm, too, but I'm not sure which ones. Hope that helps.

From the censuses (1910 & 1920), that looks like the correct Otto Falk. It looks like his first wife Selma preceded him in death, and sometime between 1910 and 1920 he remarried to a Clara Falk, who was some years younger than him. Selma died before 1910 as Otto is listed as widowed then.

Actually that sounds really close, but I would have to ask my mom to know for sure. I know that they were long term residents of Stromsburg, having three children (Hilda b1890-?, Victoria Lora b1892-?, and Axel Robert b. 12/10/1896- 10/8/1983)all born in Stromsburg. The children stayed and married in the community, though I only know my grandpa Axel Robert's line because of his daughter (my grandmother) Bonnie Jean Falk.Any info would be amazing. I'm getting so overwhelmed by all the Falks that are named Axel and Otto. Thanks for all your help!

There is an Otto A. Falk born 3 Sep 1857 and died 26 July 1942 who is buried in the Stromsburg Cemetery. Is this the Otto Falk you are looking for? His memorial is posted on Findagrave.com; I have photographed that entire cemetery as well as some others in the county. I don't find a Selma Teegerstrom or Selma Falk listed on Findagrave, so it's possible she has an unmarked grave. I can check with the city clerk in Stromsburg. Hope that helps. Otherwise let me know what else I can check for you.

Bellwood is 20 miles from Shelby. It's northeast of Shelby in the next county over. I noticed that death date too and thought it wasn't possible. The date is probably wrong, maybe it got typed wrong.
Do you think that Espy is your Esther? I would guess so, but I don't know the family.

The Polk County History book has been transcribed and has cemetery listings. Here is the online link:
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/state/polk/Polk_Cem/gracland....
Graceland Cemetery in Shelby shows 4 people with surname Curtis. The one listed as Espy Curtis I believe may be your Esther. Espy A. Curtis b. 10-26-1873 d. 5-6-1899
That seems to fit the time period you are looking at, and seems to fit a likely age for Esther.
I can go to the cemetery some time and get a photo of the gravestone to double check. There were some errors in the transcriptions. Let me know if you want me to do this. It would probably be a week or two before I can go.

Hope this helps.
Beth Sparrow
St. Andrew's Cemetery #1 is surrounded by a field and a fence, so I didn't want to trespass or make some cows mad by going to it. St. Andrew's #1 is very small and not used anymore; I think it only has 24 known burials and records have been lost. Not sure how else I can help.

I have photographed the entire Stromsburg Cemetery and put it on Findagrave.com.
I live in Polk county and am willing to help, but I need more info on what specifically you might be looking for. I could look for an obit, a marriage license, etc. This Charles Widga is not buried in Polk county, so he is probably buried in Arizona as you suspect. Good luck and let me know if you want me to look for something here.

Charles Widga is my uncle. My father was Donavin Widga, who was Charles' brother. My aunt did an extensive search of records for her brother, Charles. Another relative found the information through records in Salt Lake City, UT. They actually made a trip to Arizona to visit the cemetary and located his last known address. Charles lived in a trailer park and the next door neighbors were his friends. They met with my aunt and even had a box of keep sakes from Charles that they brought home. I don't have the information about that address but could try to find out.
Lissa, I met you when you were a very little girl. My husband and I visited your mom and dad when you lived in Whittier, CA.
I live in Omaha, NE
Gail

Brent Lemar McBeth
(June 17, 1915 - May 12, 2009)
Brent McBeth was born June 17, 1915 on a farm in Polk County, Nebraska near the town of Osceola to Robert and Mae Lewis McBeth. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school and later Osceola High School graduating in 1933. On August 2, 1936 he married his high school sweetheart, Edythe Johnson at the Swede Home Lutheran Church in Swede Home, NE. They started farming in 1936 during the depression years and Edythe taught in the country school. After a six-year drought, they decided there must be a better place to farm and as a result they moved to Minnesota. In 1942 they leased a farm near Avoca, MN and farmed there for four years, after which they leased a farm near Lake Wilson, MN, which they later purchased. While on the farm they raised and showed Pinzgauer cattle. In 1977 they retired and moved to a acreage near the farm. Their son, Leo and grandson, Chad, continued to farm the family farm. Brent passed away on May 12, 2009 at his home in Lake Wilson, MN at the age of 93. Brent was active as a 4-H leader, and also active in the Farm Bureau. He served on the Lake Wilson Elevator Board and the Murray County Fair Board. He was an active member of Sillerud Lutheran Church in rural Balaton, MN. He taught Sunday school and served on a variety of church committees and on the church board. Brent enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, traveling, gardening and woodworking. Brent had a wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Edythe McBeth of Lake Wilson, MN, four children and their spouses, Annette McBeth of Madison Lake, MN, Anita and Garrett Mayer of Tracy, MN, Clair and Delores McBeth of Fergus Falls, MN, and Leo and Connie McBeth of Lake Wilson, MN, and special daughter and friend, Sue Frost of Madison Lake, MN. Six grandchildren, Leslie Anderstrom, Jackie and (Terry) Lider, Patty and (Trevor) Johnson, Lindsay McBeth, Wendy and (Paul) LeTendre, and Chad McBeth, six great-grandchildren, Morgan Lider, Grace Lider, Halie Johnson, Drew Johnson, Molly LeTendre, and Jack LeTendre, one brother, Robert McBeth of Newburg, OR. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Neal, Arden, and Glenn McBeth, and one sister, Vareane Foltz.
Funeral Services at Sillerud Lutheran Church rural Balaton, MN, on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Steven Quist officiating. Interment is at Sillerud Lutheran Cemetery, rural Balaton, MN.

Doris. My name is Patricia Warner. My Grandfather was Charles A. Gahn, immigrated from Sweden. He was the husband and father of the persons who are buried in Stromsberg, Nebraska. His wife died in childbirth along with their child. He remarried a woman from Hartford, my grandmother Lydia Anderson Gahn. Together they had one child, born in Polk, Nebraska, Ramona M. Gahn. Please feel free to contact me. I realize this message is 7 years after your posting. I was so suprised to see this. Sincerely, Patricia Warner
