Rehfeld, Knaak and Schultz families

My great great grandparents are Friedrich Karl and Auguste Rehfeld Knaak, born in Germany in the 1830's and came to Pierce County in 1880. One of their daughters, Emilie, married Julius Schultz (my great grandparents). I have no info on any parents or siblings of "Fred" Knaak or Augusta Rehfeld, but have a pretty good list of the Knaak descendents. I have nothing on the Rehfeld's, but have seen several tombstones with that surname on it when I visited there. My questions are: Who were the relatives of Auguste Rehfeld, and were there siblings or cousins of Fred Knaak in Pierce County that caused them to go directly there from Germany? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

I can find in ancestry where it refers to an obituary; however, it only gives her name & the dates, no other info. Naomi was born 11 Sep 1917 NE. and died 20 Nov 2003 Plainview, NE.

Hello,
I might have some info for you, Barbara was the sister of Josef Dufek (Duffek/Duffeck/Dufeck/Defeck/Duppek/ and Adam Duffeck, the brothers changed the spelling when they came to America, Joseph in Jul 1893 and Adam and Anna 1889. As I understand it Barbara came with Adam & Anna, not with Josef (Joseph) and Anna.

There parents were Jacob Dufek or Duffek & Anna Alfman but that is all the info I've been able to get from a cousins father, she is Joyce Duffeck.

If you can email me I can send some crops from my desktop software that might help. There was also a sister Anna K, 4 children in all and the listing where Jacob & Anna says their births were Pomerania but that whole part of the world has changed names so many times: Prussia, Germany, West Bohemia, Czeck, Pomerania and there are probably more and they were part of USSR after WW II.

My grandfather Peter Joseph Dufek was their first child when they came to the US, he was born in Memomonie MI and his oldest son Robert Louis Dufek was my father. They are all deceased now.

Please contact me direct at dpkmdh47@gmail.com, I can send more info that way rather than using my verizon email. I live in Tampa Bay FL so you living in Georgia isn't that far away and one cousin found me Connie Duffeck Chastine and another Joyce Duffeck, they are descendents of Adam & Anna but they got me the parents name so I could connect.

DinelH

Hello, and thanks for your reply to my query. I am very happy to hear from you about these families. I have known Adolf Kähny for over 10 years, and visited him in Adelhausen in 2001 to learn about my own Kähni ancestor who emigrated from Adelhausen. Afterwards, he sent me some information about these Brugger/Kähny families which, interestingly, varies somewhat from what you have just told me, and which also seems to be at odds with what I have found in my own research. A most complicated story! Perhaps you did not know that Leonhard and Louise Brugger had emigrated with their children to the US earlier, but, first, let me just quote verbatim in my translation what Adolf said to me in an email: "Leonhard Brugger emigrated with his wife Louise Kessler and his children Emma and Emilie in 1878 to the USA. Leonhard died in 1881 in the USA. Louise then returned with their children to Germany, and in 1886 she married the smith Erhard Kähny of Adelhausen. The family then emigrated once again to the USA in 1888. The children from the marriage of Leonhard and Louise remained in Germany. Louise died in 1892 in the USA, and the widower Erhard married Johanna Glaser-Zach in 1893." Notice that Adolf states that Leonhard Brugger died in the USA rather than Germany, but I have so far been unable to locate a death or burial record for him or for Louise. Adolf also gave me some information about the children of Leonhard and Louise; "Emma b 1877 d 1955 in Basel, Emilie b 1878 d 1881 on the ship during the trip back to Germany, Anna Margaretha b 1880 USA d 1937 in Baden-Baden, and Leonhard b 1881 d unknown in USA". I did some checking and found that Leonhard b 1881 came back to the USA at a later time since he lived and died in Butte, Montana on 5 June 1960. He apparently did not return to the USA with Louise and Erhard, however. So that is the story as I currently understand it. I am also connected to the Bruggers by ancestry, hence my interest in this family. Incidentally,. I also have all the data on the children of Erhard Kähny with both Louise and with Johanna. I have several of Adolf's books, but not the "Familien-Chronik". I do have one on various emigrants from the Eichsel parish which is called "Auswanderungen aus der Pfarrei Eichsel-Adelhausen". Perhaps that is the same book? I also understand he has made a CD with all the parish families on it, but he is out of those at the moment (though I would dearly love to have one). I would be grateful to hear if you ever come across any information on the gravesites for Louise and Leonhard. Thanks again.
Tony Kaney - arkaney@excite.com

I don't know if you ever got an answer to your question about a gravesite for Louise Brugger, but I am happy to share the information I've been able to find.

It appears Luise (Kessler) Brugger married Erhard Kahny on October 11, 1886 in Germany. They immigrated to the USA sometime in 1888, the same year their daughter, Lydia, was born. (Their son, Emil, died in infancy before they left Germany.) Therefore, Louise's first husband must have died in Germany.

From what I've been able to piece together, Louise died in Omaha, NE, when Lydia was 3 years old, so around 1891. I don't have specific information about where she was buried, but either a Catholic or Lutheran cemetery is probable.

It appears Luise and her first husband, Leonhard Brugger, had three children: Emma (b. 1877), Emilie (b. 1878), and Leonhard (b. 1881). Apparently, although they would have been relatively young at the time, for some reason these children did not emigrate with their mother and stepfather in 1888. However, family gossip has it that they did attempt to contact their half-sister, Lydia, in the aftermath of WWII, which is how we found out they existed.

Erhard & his second wife, Johanna Glaser, are my great-grandparents. Do you have a copy of Adolf Gottfried Kahny's "Familien-Chronik"?

Hans and Sidsel Petersen (Pedersen)

I would appreciate help in obtaining any information on Hans and Sidsel. I do know that their son's name was
Rasmus Hansen (wife Helene). Rasmus and family resided in the Plainview area and in his later years, Hans lived with them. Before retiring Hans and Sidsel owned and farmed property in the same area.
Hans was born in Denmark in 1817 and Sidsel, was also born in Denmark, in 1820. I believe that Hans died in the Plainview area around 1902, and Sidsel died between 1885-1900. I mainly am looking for their exact dates of death (obits if possible) and their place of burial. Thank you for any help you can give me.

I just came across a photo with the same imprint - "Pyke's Car Studio". The photo is hand-labeled "Orvill Keith Family". It was among my gr-grandmother's possessions, but not to my knowledge a related family. It appears to be early 1900s. Included in this collection are portraits from Wayne and Holmes Co. OH, Washington, IA, Indiana, and southern MI. There are several Orvill Keith's in the census, but their profiles don't seem to precisely match the individuals in the photo. Hope this helps narrow your search.

Pierce County Call; Pierce Nebraska; 23 September 1915.

Another Pioneer Called

Death called another pioneer and old settler last week in the person of William Voecks, who passed away on the 15th inst. at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 24 days.

Deceased had been in poor health for several years, being afflicted with stomach trouble. For four months previous to his death he was very weak, being confined to his bed and growing weaker gradually until death’s summons came.

Mr. Voecks was one of the early settlers on the Willow in this county. He came here from the Fatherland in the fall of 1872--43 years ago--and went through all the privations and hardships of the pioneers. Here he raised a large family and by frugality, strict economy and good management gathered about him a goodly competence. He was a just man, a good citizen and lived a life that commanded the respect and high regard of his fellow men.

Friedrich Wilhelm Voecks was born in Pommern, Germany on the 20th day of October, 1843. He worked as a servant on a farm in his early days, being united in marriage on April 29, 1872, to Johanna Schulz. In the autumn of the same year he and his bride came to America and took up a homestead in this county, locating on the Willow, west of Pierce. Here 9 children came to bless this union, all surviving except one child which died when a babe. In 1891 the wife passed away and later, in 1904, Mr. Voecks moved to Pierce to make his home. The eight children who survive their father are Mrs. Matilda Draeger, of Norfolk; Emil, Frank, Richard, Ernest and Arthur Voecks and Mrs. Amanda Kirstine and Mrs. Martha Kirstine, all of this county. He is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren and one great grand child. A brother, Carl, of Norfolk, survives. Deceased was a veteran of the German wars, serving in 1866 in the war between Prussia and Austria and in 1870 in the war between Germany and France.

Short services were held at the home last Friday forenoon with services following at the Christus Lutheran church at 11 o’clock, Rev. J.H. Holzberger having charge of the same. The services were attended by a large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends. The pall bearers were Henry Meyer, August Juhls, John Poellot, Wm. Hoefs, Fred Splittgerber and August Roepke. The remains were intered (sic) in the Tawney cemetery twelve miles west of Pierce.

Pierce County Call; Pierce, Nebraska; Friday, 17 April 1891 page 8

Mrs. Wm. Voecks of Willow Creek died last Saturday of child birth.

On behalf of the Lied Pierce Public Library Genealogy Help Group we are able to supply the following information.

We are unable to locate Archie Benham on the 1910 census. However, we were able to find that according to his World War I registration dated 12 September 1918 his guardian was John Sargent. According to the 1910 Bazile Township, Antelope County Nebraska census John Sargent is listed with his wife Minnie. There is no listing of anyone else living with them. According to the 1920 census, John is listed as living in Plainview and widowed. Archie is not listed with him.

Sorry we could not offer more assistance.
According to a newspaper article in the Norfolk weekly news journal of Oct 8, 1909 Fred Young took in an orphan named Archie Benham age 8 who had come on the Orphan Train from New York. So he should be on the 1910 census with Fred Young. Does anyone have access to this census?
Thanks for any help

F.M.Deweese (I think Francis) took in an orphan named Janette Benham age 9 who had come on the Orphan Train from New York. So she should be on the 1910 census with the Rev.

Looking for the cemetery where Johan (b. 1813?) and Wilhelmine (b. 1817?) Nenow are buried. They were Lutheran and were living with their daughter, Hannah/Johanna and son-in-law, William Winter, in 1880. I would like to find the graves of all the Nienows who came to this part of Nebraska from Wisconsin.

Re: Lloyd Allen

On behalf of the Lied Pierce (Nebraska) Public Library Genealogy Help group we have not located any information on Mr. Allen's family. The following are from the local newspapers.

Pierce County Call; Pierce, Nebraska; May 25, 1900

The sad news of the death of Loyd Allen was received by Mrs. Hitchcock Monday morning. The card stated that Mr. Allen died last Thursday between Canada and Buffalo, his body being prepared and shipped to his home in Oswego. His untimely death seems all the more sad when it is known that at the time of his death he was but a few hours ride from his home he longed to see. The sympathy of this community will go out to the stricken wife and fatherless child.

Pierce County Leader; Pierce, Nebraska; May 25, 1900

Pierce friends received word this week that Lloyd Allen died on Thursday of last week between Canada and Buffalo, N.Y., while on his way home. Mr. and Mrs. Allen left Pierce on Tuesday for Oswego, N.Y., the letter hoping to get her husband home before the final summons came.

On behalf of the Lied Pierce (Nebraska) Library Genealogy Help Group we are glad to supply the following information.

According to Mr. Kahny’s obituary dated July 4, 1912, the family moved to Pierce County nine years previously (1903) from Platte County Nebraska. You may need to look at Platte County for more information. In the event that you do not have the obituary a transcript follows:

Pierce County Leader; Pierce, Nebraska; 4 July 1912; page 1

Ed. Kahney (sic) Dead.

Ed. Kahney (sic), one of the highly respected farmers living about five miles northeast of Pierce, passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, July 1, about 1 o’clock. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Lutheran church east of Pierce, and interment was made in the nearby cemetery.

The direct cause, as near as we can learn, is the result of a stroke of paralysis Mr. Kahney (sic) suffered in April of this year. At that time while he was working in the yard he was paralyzed and since then he has been failing gradually, and for the past few weeks has been obliged to remain in bed.

Mr. Kahney (sic) was about 53 years of age and had been a resident of Pierce county for about nine years, coming here from Platte county. He was well-to-do and was held in high regard by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and four children, and to these the Leader extends its heartfelt sympathy.
