Hello, up until I saw your query I only knew that Fred had died sometime before his brother Erich died in September 1971. Erich is buried in Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Other family members are buried in Cowles Hill Cemetery a few miles north of Nebraska City. Fred does not seem to be buried in either of those cemeteries.

Whatever happened to Edith was after 1940 as Fred and Edith and a daughter, Eldeen, appear on the 1940 census in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin.

I'll be visiting family in Nebraska this summer and will search for an obituary.

Do you know what became of Fred and Edith's children William and Aldeen?

Would you be willing to share Fred's obituary?

Regards,
Les
You have a great online family tree.

Do NOT WASTE your time looking through those cemetery listings provided by the other poster. I DID look and Edward was not listed. It REALLY GAWLS me when people do a google and send links that WASTE the time of the person they THINK they might be helping. This person is known across the boards for wasting people's time and MONEY in research and paying for searches for death certificates, etc.

The burial information is NOT quaranteed to be on the death certificate. A county official in most counties across the US reviews and approves the death certificate then authorizes a burial permit or transfer permit to another jurisdiction. The actual place of cremation/burial depends on the local county process and is NOT a requirement to be on a death certificate.

Hi,

Nebraska doesn't "publish" death dates except for the very old ones, therefore, it's more difficult to find this info than in other states.

The Trabert Family Tree, Ancestry.com, shows that Edward Samuel Klein died 30 September 1958, Lincoln, Johnson, Nebraska.

You will find cemetery listings at www.usgwarchives.net/ne/johnson/johtable.htm

and
www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/johnson/olres/cemetery/index....

Generally where the person was buried will also be on their death certificate. You can order them at nebraska dept. Health & Human Services, http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/pages/vitalrecords.aspx.

In 1900 Edward's family was living in O Precinct, Seward, NE.
John Klein, b. OH Oct 1845, marr 24 yrs, carpenter.
Barbara, wife, b. IL July 1855, had given birth to four children all were alive in 1900.
Edward S. b. IL Jan 188, clerk livery stable.
Matild M., b. IL april 1882.
Maude M., b. NE, June 1888.

In 1910 most were living in Precinct O.
John Klein, b. OH, 64, marr 35 yrs, carpenter.
Barbara, wife, b. IL, 63, seamstress @ home.
Edward, b. IL, 30, mail carrier rural route.
Mary, daulaw, b. NE, 31, servant @ home.

According to the Trabert Family Tree Barbara died 9 Feb 1916 in Milford, Seward, NE.

In 1920 John was living in Milford; 74, widower, carpenter.

In 1930 John was living in Milford; 84, widower, carpenter retired.

According to the Trabert Family Tree, John died 5 Sept 1945 Milford.
Phebe M (Slason?) Holman Gage (1813-1876)

Hello! I'm seeking information on Phebe M. (Slason?) Holman Gage.

She was born in 1813 in Vermont, parents unknown.

Phebe M. HOLMAN can be found residing with Franklin and Patience (Gage) Slason in Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont on the 1850 US Federal Census. Her daughter, Phebe J. SLASON is also residing with this family. Thomas and Eunice (Stephens) Gage, who I believe are the parents of Patience, are next door neighbors found on the same page. It's also possible they were the parents of the Mr. Gage who married Phebe M Holman. For certain, though, this Gage family is related in some fashion.

The only other record I have of Phebe is of her death. Her gravestone can be found in Vesta Cemetery in Johnson County, Nebraska. On one side, the gravestone reads the following:
HOWARD
Phebe J Holman <-- This is Phebe J Slason found on the 1850 census
Wife of J.T. Howard
1844-1887
George Irving
1864-1876
Agnes
1873-1875
On the other side, the gravestone reads:
GRANDMOTHERS
Phebe M GAGE <-- This is Phebe M Holman found on the 1850 census
1813-1876
Agnes T Howard
1811-1884

Phebe M Gage [Phebe M Holman Gage] and Agnes T Howard [Agnes Todd (Clark) Howard] were the grandmothers of George Irving Howard and Agnes Howard found on that gravestone. Agnes T Howard was the mother of J.T. Howard [John Todd Howard].

To add to the confusion, Phebe M Gage's daughter, Phebe J Slason, was recorded as Jane HOLMAN in her marriage to John HOWARD. They were married Aug 29, 1863 in Oswego, Kendall, Illinois, USA.

I'm looking for 1860 records for mother and daughter, Phebe M Holman and Phebe J Slason/Holman. They may have resided near Squaw Grove, De Kalb, Illinois, as that is where John T Howard can be found.

I'm also looking for 1870 records for Phebe M Holman/Gage. She may have lived in Johnson County, Nebraska by this time. Her daughter and son-in-law lived in Sterling, Johnson, Nebraska.

Phebe Jane (Holman) Howard's son Harlos was born in Minnesota on 17 Aug 1865, so it's also possible that 1865 Minnesota state census records could be found for Phebe J Howard and Phebe M Holman/Gage.

I know that Phebe M Gage is *not* the same Phebe Gage found in Grafton County, NH in 1860 and Plato, Ill. in 1870, as this Phebe Gage 1813-1885 was buried next to Rebecca and in the same lot as Hannah (found in 1860) at Udina Cemetery in Udina, Kane, Illinois.

In summary, here's what I'm hoping to find:
• 1860 US Fed Census for Phebe M Holman/Gage and for Phebe J Slason/Holman
• 1865 Minnesota State Census for Phebe M Holman/Gage and for Phebe J Howard.
• 1870 US Fed Census for Phebe M Holman/Gage, probably in Johnson County, Nebraska
• An explanation for why the daughter had the surname Slason in 1850 but Holman when she got married.

I wonder if perhaps Phebe M Holman Gage was Slason by birth and had Phebe J out of wedlock, then married a Mr. Holman. (The best possible match as a husband I can find is a Liutenant Holman found in Rutland County, Vermont records.) My theory is that Phebe J would have then used the maiden name of Holman to legitimize her birth before marrying John Todd Howard, who was a devout member of the M.E. Church since his teenage years.

What I wonder especially is why Phebe M and her daughter can be found residing with Franklin and Patience Gage in 1850. Was Franklin her brother, or was Patience her sister? Did Phebe M later marry into Patience's family? There are records of a Phebe M Slason as Franklin's sister, however she was born in 1828 and as far as I can tell, married Silas W Howard and died in Hubbardton, VT in 1898.
I believe that his wife Edith Boyle Fey died in the Cook area as they were living there in the 1920 census, but there is no sign of her in LA with him and his obit doesnt mention a living spouse only two brothers. His obit says the body was brought back to Nebraska for burial . Would love to know where he is buried. Thank You :)

Hello -

I realize it's been quite a while since you posted this - but my great grandfather was Georg Frederik Keiber - and he and his wife had a huge farm in Westerleigh, on Staten Island. His son Conrad Gordon had a son, Gordon Conrad - who was my father.

Jeanne Keiber Greenfield

I'm not sure how much this has to do with the family and their religiosity as Catholic Silesians.

Soon after the creation of the German Empire in 1871 (led by the Prussians), Otto von Bismarck launched his 'Kutlurkampf,' against the influence of the Catholic church in German territory. This took place mostly in Silesian and Prussian regions, as opposed to Catholic Bavaria.

A Wikipedia article can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulturkampf

How much this has to do with the families leaving Smicz/Schmitsch I cannot say. From what I have of my family history, it says Albert Hindera left in 1879 at age 17, as the next year he would have had to join the army. Whether this was from a moral or religious objection I do not know. But as it is mentioned, it must be of some importance. His parent emigrated some 10 years later in 1888/1890.
Hi, I know that Matej Kotmel and his wife Annie were in Nebraska in The 1880's in Saline or Lancaster County. They were the witnesses at my great-grandparents marriage ceremony. I am looking for Bittner/Bitner from Bohemia. I am trying to find exactly where they were from in Bohemia. In the early 1900 census years they give their place of origin as Austria or Hungarian Austria.

My gg-grandfather was Vaclav (sometimes it is Wencil) Bittner and they went to Canada first then came to Nebraska with 3 children.

I think my Vaclav was living next to Kotmel in Lancaster County so i was wondering if they might have known each other in Bohemia. They first lived in Saline county, Nebraska before living n Lancaster County. I figure they had to either have relatives here or friends here or just mayybe people from the same area in Bohemia to have settled here.

On son, Anton Bittner moved back to Canada after the 1900 census. They went to Alberta, Canada. Don't know if it was Alberta that they first came to before coming to Nebraska. Wondered if they had relatives that had immigrated to Canada or not. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Anita

NE and is buried in Roger Mills OK. but i can find him on the census anywhere in 1900, any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Sue

The NSHS is involved in the Inter-Library Loan program for newspapers via microfilm. If there is a library near you with a microfilm reader and copier you can view the newspapers at your leisure.

Copies of most NE newspapers are on file on microfilm at the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln. Unfortunately this does require a personal trip to do the lookups as I do not believe they have the staff to do this service.
