Beckwith died at this residence in
Willow Springsprecint, this county of
Garfield on Sunday Feb 18,1900 at
5 pm. Jasper
Beckwith aged 81 years 11 months and 18 days.
Mr Beckwith had not been well for sometime but had not
been confined to bed. On Sunday he had had visitors and had
entertained them as usual, seeming to be well as usual.
At about five in the evening he complained of a pain in his face, and he started toward his bed but fell dead before reaching it.
The deceased was born in
Steuben co.,
New York on
Feb 28,1818. On Jan 27,1839 he was married to Miss Emma
Johnson of
Tompkins co.,
New York, who shared his joys
and his sorrows from that day until death seperated her
from her companion. Twelve children were the fruits of the
marriage, nine of whom are still living. Mr L
Beckwith, a son
and Mrs
Smith White a daughter, residing in this vicinity.
Mr Beckwith came to this county about 16 years ago
residing until a few years ago on the farm now occupied
by Thomas
Garrison. After selling that place he moved to the
Place in WillowSprings where he was when death claimed him.
He had however sold the place and had taken a homestead
on the
Loup near his daughter's Mrs White,s residence.
He was preparing to move there. He was an obliging neighbor,
energetic, honest and withall a good citizen. He united in the
Baptist church in 1847. The funeral services were held
Tuesday, Rev. Webster officiating and the remains were laid to
rest in the
Burwell cemetery (COTTONWOOD )
