I have a "coin" that must have been handed out for promotional sales from "Armstrong & Wentz in Haigler, Nebraska" on the reverse side it says "Good for $1.00 in Trade"
Does anybody knoiw who the Armstrong or Wentz were, what kind of store, when it was established, etc? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sally Watkins

I'm not sure, but I would guess that it was a book store. I looked on the web and I come up with book stores and the authors Arthur Armstrong & Harriet Groff Wentz.

John,
You are indeed correct from what I can gather-- Dulcie was the daughter of Billie Armstrong whose wife & aunt, I believe owned the "country" store in Haigler, NE. The occupation of Roy Belz was a "shoe salesman", from the information I can glean and that sometimes Dulcie would go on trips with him which took him all over the world. Thank you for the additional information on the exact dates of birth/death, etc.

I have not found a definate connection with my Armstrong family that I'm trying to trace but not ruling anyone out, still.
I'm wondering who her grandfather might be. I have a William C. Armstrong b. 1858 Madison, Union County, IA
son of Franklin Armstrong (b 4 July 1831 Augusta County, VA-d 25 May 1919 Wray, Yuma County, CO & Polly Ann "Mary" Bowles (birth unknown- died IA 1877)
Other Siblings:

Franklin 1862-Madison, Union County, IA
George Harvey "Harvey"

m. Hannah Whyte

d. 10 Feb. 1905 Wray,Yuma COO
Augusta Armstong b. 1866 Madison, Union, IA
Hulda Armstrong

d. 28 March 1900 Wray, Union COO
m. George Heaton Epperson
b1866 North Heaton Point, IL
d. Aug. 1932 Jerome, Jerome, ID
Flora Armstrong

(I have a picture of Hulda & Flora together & one of (grandfather) Franklin Armstrong b. 1931, the three Epperson boys and the three Whyte girls that was taken in a studio in Haigler, NE which is not very far from Wray. )
I'll reply to you off list and give you some specifics on people that you may want to contact.
Thanks Again!

Hi Sally Thank you very much for the Armstrong info. Dulcy Armstrong was married to my father, Paul H.
Belz's, older brother Roy William Belz. I believe they met doing the theater in Hastings, Nebraska. Roy Belz was a shoe saleman and traveled a lot. They lived mainly Philadelphia and Richmond, Virginia. My father worked at one of Roy's shoe stores in Phili. after WW II. I don't believe Roy and Dulcy Belz ever returned to Nebraska for a visit after 1958. My family lives Lincoln, NE and my father traveled to Washington, DC many times a year and always tried to visit Richmond. I met them once on family vacation back east in the late seventies. Their son Paul is dead, but daughter Lela Lou is still living around Richmond, Virginia. I have been trying to get family information from her and Paul's wife without much luck. I will send her the info you gave me. Thanks again. John Belz, Lincoln, NE

contact me (Armstrong, Wentz)

I ran across an old post you placed on Ancestry.com back in August 2003. You have probably found the information you were looking for about the Armstrong store in Haigler, NE, but thought I’d send you a note anyway about some information I found in the “Haigler 1976 Bi-Centennial” book that I have.

I am from Haigler and remember my dad talking about Billy Armstrong, but can’t remember any specifics.

The following quotes were found:

Printed 1976
In an article written by Mrs. John Roach on page 32
“In the early days M. M. Chase & Son put in a store. It afterwords was Allen & Mercer’s and changed hands at least twice more then Jas. Grady, Armstrong’s, Armstrong & Wentz, Armstrong’s and now McKinney’s.”

Page 44
“Mr. and Mrs. E. O. McKinney have been in business here since 1933 when they bought the stock of merchandise and business from the L. B. Armstrong estate.”

Page 47
“L. B. Armstrong, one of the first citizens of Haigler passed away in November, 1932.” (taken from an article “History of Haigler – 1926 to 1937, written by Florence Clegg in 1937)

Page 63
“Billy Armstrong lived in a house where Mark McVey has his mobile home. Billy told Dad when he was nine years old his step-mother sent him after a bucket of water. But instead Billy got on his horse and left home. He rode with cowboys on the range for years before coming to Haigler. In Haigler he had a saloon and later a mercantile store. He always carried a basket on one arm covered with a cloth. He revealed to Dad one day the contents of his basket included a six-shooter. Billy made his fortune as a businessman in Haigler.” (taken from an article “ADAMS, Stories by Emmons as told to JoAnn Webster”)

A list of students of the Haigler School in 1910 – 11 are listed. Among the students in the fifth grade is “Mamie Armstrong”

On Page 103 there is a picture of the Armstrong Store. I have scanned it and can send it if you want it.
