Re: Schellenberg, Erb

Lori, I just came across your post about Kasper/Casper Schellenberg and his wife Anna Erb. I've researched this family considerably because Kasper was my gg grandfather.

I believe I have the answers to your questions. If you respond to this, I will try to dig out the info for you.

In short though, Kasper was married back in Germany to his first wife, Dorothy Leitchuck (sp) who died in Germany. He came over with three sons, not necessarily all at the same time. Kasper remarried to Anna. Anna was married here and had some children, but all died. I can't remember right now the surname of her husband before Kasper. That is something I'll have to dig out for you.

Kasper is buried at St. Pauls because that was his church. Anna Erb is buried there also, but I believe it is in the cemetery plot of her first (?) husband and children.

Anyway...I'll sort all this out for you when I find out if you reply and exactly what your questions are.

How are you related to the Erbs/Schellenbergs?

Julie

He served in the Canadian military during WWI. He seems to have been married while in Canada but lists himself as "single" in 1930 US Census in Fremont. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for John Schurman/Schurmann born about 1878 in Nebraska, possible son of RH Schurman/Schurmann. John was in Brown Co., Nebraska in 1900. He's listed as a servant with with William D. McCord. Also in Brown Co., NE in 1900 is Andrew Schurman/Schurmann (in Ainsworth). I believe John and Andrew are brothers.

April 1902 - John Schurmann and Marie Lutthans are married in Dodge Co., NEB.

1910 - John H. Schuman and wife Marie H. are living in Brown Co., NE (Ainsworth). Andrew also in Ainsworth. I believe John H. and Andrew are brothers, and possibly sons of RH Schurman (Cuming, Dodge Co., NE).

1920 - I can't find John. I may have found Marie in Great Falls, Montana as a nurse. Andrew still in Ainsworth, NEB

1930 - I can't find John or Marie. Andrew still in Ainsworth, NEB

1934 - Marie died in December and is buried in Sultan Cemetery in Snohomish Co., WA. Her older sister (Magdalena Schirman's family is in Snohomish Co.) Marie Lutthans is a twin of Matthias Emil Lutthans, born Nov. 1871 in Germany.

Any help with John Schurman/Schurmann????

Jill:
I noticed that you were looking for information about Riggs in Fremont, NE about 10 years ago on NEGenWeb. I tried your posted email address but it was returned, I am trying instead to reach you via Ancestry.com.

I have a 1907 marriage certificate from James Charles Stuart (born 1885) wedding in Fremont that was signed by two Riggs as witnesses. The licence says "Mr. Harlie Riggs and Mrs. Addie Riggs his wife, Fremont Nebr." The text Addie could also be Annie or something similar.

Do you recognize these individuals? I have a gap in James Charles Stuart's life that I am trying to complete. I am curious if James may have lived with or near the Riggs.

Cheers,
Derek Stuart
I am looking for information on the 1926 marriage of my grandfather, Thomas Patrick Hoye, to Laura nee Rink and whether Laura was previously married. Thomas was married previously to Fanny Conroy. They had 4 children and Fanny died in 1919.

The census of 1930 shows Thomas & Laura living together on a farm in Wood River with 2 children, Bernard & Harold, ages 10 & 8. I know from family history that these children were not Thomas's, so I suspect Laura was previously married. She was single & living with a sister in the 1920 census. I have contacted the state's vital records twice & they can't find any record of her marriage to Thomas.

Thomas was born in Wood River in 1882 & died in 1932. Laura was born in 1895 around Hooper, Dodge Co., & died in 1988 in Omaha.

Can anyone help? I would also like an obit on Laura Hoye.

Thanks,
Shirley Hoye in California
Hello,

I have been doing research this year and I just don't get it! Casper Friedrick Schellenberg or Friedrick Kasper Schellenberg married a woman named Anna Dorothea Erb. She arrived in the US in 1866 with Elizabeth Erb. I am curious if anyone knows of / any thing about Elizabeth Erb - who I believe died sometime between the 1880 census and the 1900 census. Then Anna Dorothea (who I think was daughter-in-law) never had any children. Casper had children. Who was his first wife and when did she die? Where is she buried?
Where is Anna Dorothea buried? Her death certificate says Pebble - so why is Kasper buried in St. Pauls? Clue me in please.
Lisa

Jean~
By the way, I found A.L. Spangler and Charlotte Spangler in the 1880 Census living in Snyder Co. PA. Daughter Isabella D. was 30 at the time. Interestingly, she had a SISTER named Clara who was 19. So I am fairly confident we are talking about the same woman...naming a child after another family member was common.
Mr. Duquette did seem to get around! I found this article from the Lincoln paper...not sure if it's same one or not.
Dated May 5, 1903, Lincoln Evening News, Page 2
Accused Perjurer at Fremont Escapes Through Legal Loophole.
FREMONT, Neb., May 5 -- (Special) --In district court yesterday, Judge Hollenbeck sustained a demurer raised by the attorneys for William Duquette, charged with purjury, and held that the offense alleged against him was not such as to constitute perjury. Duquette is the man recently brought back from Missoula, Mont., by Sheriff Bauman. He fled from Fremont last October in the midst of a deposition that was being taken. He had related upon oath the statements which furnished the basis for the charge of perjury, but had not signed the deposition. While admitting that morally Duquette was perhaps as guilty of perjury as though his name had been attached to the deposition, Judge Hollenbeck announced that he could not so rule in law. A telegram came from Sheriff Gustus of Phelps county this afternoon saying he could not get evidence to convict Duquette of bigamy. He was accordingly given his liberty. His Omaha wife was here yesterday and was one of the first to congratulate him on his release.

While researching Fred M. Hans by collecting newspaper articles, Dan Brown found the Duquette name mentioned in two articles in "The Lincoln Evening News" dated 23 May 1903 and 23 June 1903. Duquette's name was mentioned in reference to his involvement in a murder case with his brother-in-law, Fred M. "Lone Star" Hans. Dan was very curious about how this unknown person was related to Fred Hans and began collecting other newspaper articles and other data on the name of Duquette. Approximately 20 articles from the "Omaha World Herald" have since been found. Those Omaha paper articles mention only the name of a W. H. or William H. Duquette and make no other reference to Fred Hans.

"The Lincoln Evening News
June 23, 1903
“CHILD WITNESSES ARE SPIRITED AWAY
Prosecution in Hans murder case minus important testimony and takes a continuance”
Ainsworth
-- mentions that children of D. Luse are possibly kidnapped by friends of Fred Hans--
“An Omaha newspaper man named Porter was implicated in this charge and subsequently left the country for parts unknown. It was because of this feeling of distrust that the indictment for murder was found against Hans.—
“He (Fred) is supposed to have an accomplice in the killing in the person of W. H. Duquette, for whom the Nebraska authorities have for some time been making an unsuccessful inquiry. Duquette is a brother of Hans’ second or third wife. He is the man who was brought back from Montana once to answer a charge of perjury growing out of his testimony in a case wherein he had sued Hammond Bros. of Fremont, publishers of the Tribune, for libel. He escaped that charge on a technicality. A few weeks ago inquiry was being made for him on the strength of an understanding that he had bigamously esposed a farmer’s daughter living near Holdrege while he had a wife living in Omaha.--“

"Lincoln Evening News
Oct 24, 1903
“LIFE SENTENCE FOR MAN WHO MURDERED
Detective Hans, found guilty of killing stockman, presumably for pay from enemies, get stiff dose”
Ainsworth—
__the evidence was that a man by the name of W. H. Duquette, known as the tramp detective, and who was extradicted from Utah for perjury, in a case wherein the Hammond Bros. of Fremont were parties, and also for bigamy, was sent by Hans to “workup” as he said the case”---

in other articles, William H. Duquette had an alias of Walter Blakesley and W. H. Dicket.

Dan Brown believes that the 1920 census is for the same person, but would like to confirm.

1920 US Federal Census--County--El Paso, Precinct 58, (Colorado Springs)--
-Duquette, William (head) age 47, born about 1872 in Mich, f France, m Mich, occ-game warden
-Duquette, Hilma (wife) age 39, born about 1881 in Sweden (citizen in 1888)
-Duquette, Fauchon (dau) age 15, born in Colorado (Phenchion)
-Duquette, Bernice (dau) age 8, Colorado

Does any body have any info on a W.
I'm searching for descendants of James Earl Reber and his wife Marie O. Eckerle. The family lived in Fremont from about 1917 on. George died there in 1941; Marie in 1974. George was born in Marysville KS ih 1885; I'm not certain about Marie's nativity yet. Both are buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Fremont. You can e-mail me directly if you so desire. I'm trying to prove that we are (distant) cousins, so it's important research.

Bertha Fredericks/Friedrichs(?) (sister Sophie), md John R Blake

I'm hoping to make a connection with anyone who recognizes these names:: Bertha Fredericks/Friedrichs, married John R. Blake before 1900 (in NB, KS, or MO). All I knew about her before beginning to search was that she was born in Germany and had a sister named Sophie.

The earliest info I've found on her is in the 1900 census, married to John R. Blake 18 years (abt 1882), with 7 children, the eldest (Fred) was born in Nebraska abt Feb 1883 - and that she immigrated in 1870. By 1910 they were in Louisiana (he & sons worked for the railroad). One of their sons moved back to Fremont Nebraska, another to Kansas. Everyone else stayed in Louisiana.

Bertha is my great-grandmother - and I have always wanted to know more about her and her family - siblings, parents, where born, etc. Can anyone help me??

Unsure if the following is the exact family I need but it's where I've started. Found in "Germans to America" (1870):: Friedrich Friedrichs, age 47, farmer; Hanover, Germany to U.S., SHIP: Bremen - from Bremen to NY, Arrived: 4/1/1870 -with: Wilhelmine, age 46; Wilhelmine, age 18; Auguste, age 16; Wilhelm, age 15; Sophie, age 12; Bertha, age 7; Emil, age 7 mos.

Thanks for any connection that might be made...
Nancy Blake Thompson

p.s. I know this is a stretch, but I have also found in the Nebraska census for 1880 a John R. Blake who would be of an age to be the father of my John R. Blake (both born in Maine) - and there is listed at his residence a housekeeper (of the right age) named Bertha Klaman (married). I've wondered if this might be the same Bertha I'm looking for - possibly having been married before. I know - I'm reaching for straws here! :-)

Phil, I didn't know if you were aware of when and where Sarah died. My aunt married a SHEPARD in Adams Co., IL and I was tracing SHEPARD back to compile a large file for my cousin who was not aware of his ancestors. I went back to VA but hit a brick wall. I also tried to contact Cheryl Belk with no luck. If you need more info let me know.
