Peterson whom I am researching. Benjamin was born 27 Feb 1873 in Poy Sippi, WI and died 29 Apr 1961 in Yuma, CO. I have been researching my grandson's ancestry for the past 7 years. Benjamin was his great, great grandfather.
Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

Here is the full obituary:
Word was received Tuesday afternoon from Mrs. Anna V. Peterson, now of Lincoln, of the sudden death that morning of her son, Tesla Peterson. The young man was a graduate nurse and did much work here during the flu epidemic. He lacked but a year of completing a medical course. No particulars of his death were given in the telegram. (The Republican, October 21, 1921)

The news of the death of Tesla came as a terrible shock to his immediate relatives as well as his teacher, classmates and friends.
Tesla had for the last two years been attending the Kansas City School of Medicine and Surgery. It was while pursuing his work there that he contracted smallpox. His case was not diagnosed, nor was he that seriously sick until Monday, when Dr. Frazier was called. He diagnosed the case and an ambulance was called to take him to the isolation ward. His case was not considered critical until he passed away suddenly Sunday morning at 6 o'clock.
Tesla E. Peterson was born near Valentine, Nebraska, June 8, 1899, and died at the hospital in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 16, 1921 at the age of 22 years, 4 months and 8 days.
His first school days were spent near Arabia, where he finished the grammar grades. He attended Plainview academy two years then took up nursing. He took up his first two years of training at Hastings, Neb., and then continued his training in the Hinsdale Sanitariuman and Hospital, Hinsdale, Ill. One year was spent in the military school at Howe, Ind. At the time of his death he was a sophomore in the Kansas City Schol of Medicine and Surgery. Altho very ill he was not considered in a serious condition and being isolated had not notified anyone, no one but his roommate knowing of his illness.
Tesla joined the Seventh Day Adventist church when he was a young boy and remained a member of the same until the time of his death. He was a bright, ambitious young man, never satisfied with anything but the best.
Besides his mother, Mrs. Anna M. Peterson, he leaves two brothers, LeRoy of Chamberlain, S.D., and Vernon L., attending the agricultural school in Lincoln; also three sisters, Zella, Pearl and Leta.
On account of the law forbidding the transportation of those who have died of smallpox, he ws buried in Kansas City, Mo. His body could be held such a short time that only his mother, sister Pearl and brother Vernon, were able to be present. He was laid to rest in the Forest Hill cemetery, awaiting the resurrection morning, when they again hope to be united.
His teachers and classmates paid him the highest tribute as a friend and as a student. They said: "None knew him but to love him; Nor named him but to praise." Friends extend to the bereaved their heartfelt sympathy. (The Republican, Valentine, NE - Friday, October 28, 1921)

That makes it a little clearer. The Stage line was between Fort Robinson (about 140 miles west of Valentine) and the Black Hills to the north. Hans was stationed at Fort Robinson. The White River is in South Dakota.
The place he confronted the bandits was about 25 miles SW of Valentine, or about 2 or 3 miles NE of The Snake river falls near the road from Valentine to Merrit Dam. It would have been near the "Rustlers Roost", a sheltered place near a high hill where the rustlers could see someone coming for a long distance. Doc Holliday also was at Rustlers Roost.
It is my understanding that they mostly rustled horses, driving them for the most part on Indian Reservation land in South Dakota east to Sioux City where they were sold.

Thomas Byron and Nanno Hayes were married on 18 Jan 1885. They were married in the Catholic church in Ivesdale, Champaign County, Illinois, by father Dan O Dwyer. The “Witnesses” to the marriage were William Hayes and Helen F. Byron (neither relationship is known at this time). (I have a copy)

Thomas listed his residence as Colfax township, his occupation as a farmer, that he was white, Irish, and would be 24 on his next birthday. He listed his parents as John Byron and Anna Sullivan. John (33) and Anna (21) were married on 30 April, 1856 in Sangamon County, Illinois (I have a copy). From 1880 thru 1900 he was a farmer and lived in Colfax township, Champaign County, Illinois. 1n the 1900 Census Anna was listed as having had 11 children of which 8 were living.

Nanno listed her residence as Monticello, that she was white, Irish, and would be 22 on her next birthday. She listed her parents as John Hayes and Anna Ryan (both sets of parents were born in Ireland). I have less information on her parents at this time.

On all Census reports, both Thomas and Nanno stated that they were born in Illinois, and that their parents were born in Ireland.

According to Social Security application forms (I have copies).
John Joseph was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming
Ann was born in Monticello, Piatt County, Illinois
William Michael, James, and Joseph Lionel were all born in Wood River, Hall County, Nebraska.

Nanno died on 7 March 1914, and is buried in Valentine, Nebraska.
Thomas died 21 November 1929 in Monticello, Illinois, and is buried in Ivesdale, Illinois.

My lineage is from John Joseph who married Mary Nutter. They had 2 children from the marriage, Jacquelin and Barton (my father). Barton married Juanita Covert and they had 3 children, Barton (me) , John, and Patricia. Only John has any children, and they are Amanda and Nathan. My aunt Jackie married Howard Disney (no relation) and they had 4 children, Byron, Barbara, Victoria, and Deborah. They have additional children too numerous to list at this time.

I would be interested in trading any pictures, documents, stc.

You are right on the date of 1899. Here is the obituary as posted in the newspaper:
Mrs. Julian Emelia Weisflog departed this life February 25th 1890 at her home eight miles southwest of Crookston, Nebraska at the age of 64 years 2 months and 14 days.
sister Wesiflog became a member of the Luthran church while in the Old Country.  She came to Cherry county 14 years ago.  A large company of neighbors gathered at the school house in Crookston for the funeral service which was ocnducted by the writer.  The remains of Sister Weisflog was buried in the Crookston cmemtery to await the "Resurrection morn."  The husband, five sons, tow daughters and a host of sympathizing neighbors are left to mourn the loss of one loved and respected  Mother has gone to the Paradise of God but memory will ever be fresh with a mother's love.  Jas. A. Johnson [The Republican, Valentine, Nebraska- Friday, March 3, 1899}
(you will notice that the newspaper date is 1899, so the 1890 date was a mistake of the newspaper.)
Crookston cemetery records list Herman G. Wesiflog born Dec. 24, 1835 and died Oct 15, 1915.

If this was in his diary, it would have been written some years after the fact, as Valentine and Cherry county did not exist until 1883.
Some ranchers began moving up into the sandhills from the south in 1878, and in 1880 Fort Niobrara was established. There never was any stage coach line here. The railroad arrived at the river east of town in 1882, and had the approach and bridge finished by the spring of 1883. The town had its beginnings in the fall of 1882 when the depot and some buildings were built.
There was an army post at Pickstown, Dakota Territory, on the Missouri river 100 miles or so east of Valentine. This story might fit in better with that location.

The Newspaper is on microfilm at the Historical Society, but not for loan.
There are 2 Weisflogs in the German Settlement Cemetery.
the German Setlement is southwest of Crookston. The Crookston Cemetery is up the hill north and I think about a mile east of Crookston.
There was a Francisco Stump, whose wife was Eliza J. born Feb 12,1852 died June 7, 1892, buried in Crookston cemetery. I don't know where Francisco is buried. Francisco was a civil war veteran. According to 1890 census he was a pvt in company c, 104th HE Inf. served from 1863 to July 12 1865, served 1 year, 6 months and 28 days.
Francisco advertised for final proof on homestead HE 6801, NW 1/4 Sec 35, tp 35, R30 west of 6th principal meridian. Address Crookston, 16 Dec 1892. I believe he lived about 3 miles north of Crookston.
Don't know where this came from, but written on 1890 census gives Eliza's birth place as Lancaster county, Kentucky.
1885 Nebraska census (Cherry county) lists F. Stump, age 3?, farmer, born Ohio, and parents born Ohio.
Eliza J. age 33, born Kentucky, father born South Carolina, mother born Saxony.
Henrietta age 16, born Missouri
Ina M. age 14 born Missouri
Francis 9 born Missouri
Samuel 5 born Misouri
Minna age 9/12 born Nebraska
1885 census also lists Francisco as having 20 acres of his 160 acres broken. Does not list animals.
Martin

Do you happen to know when death records began in Nebraska.

I found Francisco, he apparently went with my Great Great Grandfather and family to the rural area of Rapid City, SD.

I know this might be a long shot, however, I have mostly all photo's of my direct ancestors graves. I know we have just talked on here....but I have a favor to ask.

I live in Indiana...far away for Cherry County :). I was wanting to ask if you had a digital camera..or some type of camera..and I was going to ask if you would be willing to take a photo of each of the grave for me. I would be more than willing donate a cause to you(saying 'donate' so that this is a non-profit transaction).

I know it is a lot to ask..but I would certainly appreciate it...If you wish not to..that is your choice and I have no objection to it.
I already do appreciate all your help that you have given me...it has been more than i have asked for and I thank you greatly for it!

I hereby state that the following agreement of donation is true: So be my name is A.
Hello. I have never posted before and I happened to notice something on an "Emilia Weisflog". According to the info I have.. Emilia was born 11 Dec 1834 in Germany and Died 22 Feb 1899. I know that the date might not be correct as i could have read the handwriting wrong...but this sounded just familiar. She was married to Gustave Herman Weisflog it was noted that he also Died in Crookston, however, I have no record of this.. Please contact me with more information. acriswell3@sbcglobal.net. Reply on email and here for post please so I know to look out for your reply. Thanks!

Thanks for the local history. Fred's diary was published by the So. Dakota Historical Society in 1981. The event could have happened anywhere and maybe the bandits were just passing thru that area when caught by my uncle.

Fred M. Hans, Army scout 1876-1879 (died in 1923) had a very colorful and well publicized but unsubstantiated or undocumented career. I am aware that many articles or stories have been published about him in many cities and various states and they mention many details about historical events that he was supposedly involved in. There is much info on him on the internet. However I am hoping someone may be able to find additional newspaper articles, official documents or historical government records or archives in your court houses, local area libraries, historical societies, or other sources that reference Fred Hans (prior to 1900). I am looking for any info that might help me to verify or correlate any of the things that was said he did

Please reply directly to my private email dadbrown_99@yahoo.com

Dan

I ran across this article in an old Weld Co, Colorado newspaper and thought someone might be interested.

Here ya go,
Anna

Publication: Greeley Tribune (Greeley, Weld County); Date: Nov 24, 1892 Page 5

Killed Their Sister

Cody, Neb., Nov 17--The home of A.C. Tremmel, a farmer residing near this city, was the scene of a distressing tragedy Monday. In the absence of the parents the two boys, aged 11 and 9 respectively, secured an old gun and after extracting the shot from a number of shells, proceeded to fire at a mark. The 8-year-old sister of the boys received a charge during the practice, causing instant death.

Hi--
I, too, have ben unsuccessful in locating John S. Ware's grave. His wife, Minerva, is buried in Cedar View Cemetery,Hall County, Doniphan, Nebraska. Accding to the stone she died May 6, 1899.I have recorded that John died in 1890 (and now I can't remember why I think that!) but it may be that he was not present in a Nebraska State Census of 1895. Family story does not include John being in Wyoming. Other family by Bible record were in the Doniphan area after Henry came to Wyoming.I am Henry's great-granddaughter through son, William Henry, and granddaughter, Helen June Ware.

Re: Identity of 5 men in this photo, one believed to be Quartus M. Skinner (1869-1949)

Thanks for your reply and for the estimation of the time period--I do appreciate it. I have shown this photo to several Skinner relatives so far, one of whom is a grandchild of Quartus's younger brother Joe. She said she didn't recognize any of the men and I don't feel that any of the men resemble any of the photos that I have of him.

The only other one who looks remotely familiar to me (besides Quartus) is the one on the lower right. I have seen a few photos of a man who could be him in his younger years and am attaching it in hopes that you or someone else might recognize him or the woman. I am also attaching the only photo I have of who I think was Alva Green Skinner (1841-1925), Senior, several of whose grandchildren have the same kind of nose. The only writing on the back of the original photo was "Byron's grandfather." It is not Thomas Morris, so the only other grandfather was Alva Green Skinner.

If there was a picture with women in the family like this one, that would be a great find! I have never seen a photo of Margaret Emily Baker Skinner (1843-1934), wife of Alva Green Skinner Senior (listed incorrectly as H.E. Skinner in 1880 census--A.G. may have sounded like H.E. to the census taker?) and mother of Quartus Monroe Skinner. Nor have I ever seen a photo of Lucy Bell Skinner Dorr, wife of Robert G. Dorr, Sheridan County Judge. If anyone has any of these, I would be really grateful.

Thank you. I would be happy to correspond with you by email at lynda_turner72@yahoo.com.
