I don't know anything about the other children of Hazel's marriage to S. Clark, just what is on the 1940 census, Merle, Opal and Orville

Kilgore High school had the last high school graduate in 1966. There are probably some year books around, but not at the school or at the town hall, but there are class pictures at the town hall.

Here is an obituary of Freddie, Joe and Bertha's son:

Fred E. Kudelka
Fred Kudelka was born on Feb 1, 1908 in Kilgore, Nebraska to Joe and Bertha Kudelka. Fred attended school in Kilgore.
He married Orthello L. VanWinkle at West Point, Nebraska on April 12, 1940. This union was blessed with one daughter, Linda Mae.
Fred and Orthello made their home on the Niobrara River south east of Nenzel. After Orthello died in 1986, Fred continued to ranch the home place.
Fred died May 20, 1994 at Pine View Good Samaritan Center (in Valentine, NE) at the age of 85, He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bertha, his wife Orthello and daughter Linda. He is survived by a sister Roma Spindler of Northbrook Illinois.
Funeral services for Fred E. Kudelka were held Monday May 23, at the United Methodist church at Kilgore. Rev. Jerry Mercer officiated at the services. Interment followed at the Kilgore cemetery. (Valentine Newspaper, June 1, 1994)
Thank you for that information, do you know if Hazel had any children with her first husband? Her first husband was my uncle, but I know next to nothing about him (he died before I was born).

Do you know if Kilgore high school keeps their yearbooks?

Thank you for all your help.

I visited with Clarence and got some information:
Orville Clark was born in Chicago, and was sent to Kilgore, Ne to High School to keep him out of trouble.
He lived with his grandmother, Bertha (Kudelka) Blank. Bertha died 1-20, 1971.
Orville was a good accordian player. His grandmother (a good Baptist) didn't like him to play the popular dance songs that he knew, but he played when she wasn't home.
Orville quit school a little before graduation and joined the Navy. He came back to Kilgore after the war and drove a Model A Ford convertable.
Orville died 28 January 1984 in Illinois.

Hazel married Sylvanus (Bud) Robertson of Kilgore, in 1959. Bud died in 1974 and is buried at Kilgore. I don't have information of Hazel's death, but could also be at Kilgore. I don't think the information on the internet is up to date. Freddie Kudelka's daughter had compiled this, and she also died. I remember Hazel and Bud, but don't remember when she died.

Freddie Kudelka died 20 May 1994. I think everybody liked Freddie, always a clown. He came to Kilgore Alumni banquets (his wife was a graduate) and always wore two different color socks. Tell him you liked his socks and he would say that he had another pair just like them at home.

thanks for the information.

I did find an obit for Merle Clark, the oldest son. He was born 27 Feb 1924 in Kilgore. I'm assuming Stanley and Hazel married in Kilgore, hopefully I can find the marriage certificate or a newspaper notice.

Do you know what happened to Opal Clark? (She was one year older than Orville)

Here is the death notice for Fred Kudelka:

Joe Kudelka, from near Kilgore, was in the city Tuesday, settling the estate of his deceased brother, Fred, who died at Hot Springs, South Dakota, two years ago. (The Republican, Valentine, NE Friday, December 17, 1909)

I think you have the right Kudelka family.
Kilgore High school alumni directory lists Roma Kudelka Watschke as graduating in 1936. (1969 address Northbrook, IL) Orville Clark graduated from Kilgore in 1945.(1969 address Bensonville, IL, married to Irene Shakon.)
I will have to ask my older brother about Orville. He graduated in 1946, and knew Orville. I graduated in 1957.

My uncle moved to the US from Canada in the early 1920's. I found him in the 1940 US census in Cook County, Illinois. Based on census info, his wife Hazel b.1905 Nebraska, son Merle b.1924 Nebraska, daughter Opal b.1926 Illinois and son Orville b.1927 Illinois. There is also a sister in-law living with them, Roma Kudelka b.1918 in Nebraska. I'm assuming Hazel's maiden name is Kudelka. I found a Hazel Kudelka in the 1910 census living at Sharps Ranch,Cherry, Nebraska, with her family Joseph b.1870 Austria and Bertha b.1884 Nebraska (her parents b.Germany).

I'm trying to find a marriage registration to see if I have the correct Hazel. I'm not sure if they married in Illinois or Nebraska. When Stanley died in Illinois in 1952 he was divorced, his wife's name wasn't on the death certificate.

Any information would be appreciated
Sheri Clark

When you provide "research" or "help" to those that are "Stuck," you MUST fully research who you are identifying as being the family. In this and other cases, the wrong persons were indicated, which could cause the poster becoming even more "stuck" or connecting with the wrong people...and FURTHER making online research more difficult due to the WRONG data being presented.

In this case, the correct persons were found. Correct links must be provided and not from old "resources." If you give a link to someone, check it out first to make sure the person being sought is even listed. WHY waste someone's time in research when the person could NOT EVEN BE in that area due to other research. Once you've posted a link...TRY IT to see if it works.

MANY of these people have much more time and effort into their family research than a quick bone being suggested. At least look to see what their posted family tree might hold, or what other postings on the sought were made.

Now I have a birthdate and I am able to search in churchoffice for Behrenwalde-record in Tribsees, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (today so called).
I have only few information but hope to get something more.

Thanks
and best whishes
Doris

Doris,
I found your posted family tree on the Sund(t) family; however, there isn't enough information to correctly identify which Henry Sundt you are seeking. Your tree does not contain a Henry Sundt. You need to provide some criteria information, his full date of birth would be very helpful to identify this person in the US. If you do not have the full DOB, an approximate year would help. If you know when he emigrated from Germany, that might help. The other person identified a Henry Sundt; however, upon examination they were two different persons.
Your tree did show a Johann Heinrich Sund, born in 1798, but it did not identify if this person was the one that emigrated to the US. I doubt this is the case.

Errors in the previous Census reports provided:
The 1900 Census
Henry Sundt, born June 1875, immigrated in 1894 (Not 1882 as provided), in the US six years/Naturalized.

The 1910 Census of Chicago, Cook Co, IL
Henry Sundt (transcribed as Lundt), age 34(1875/1876), immigrated 1893/naturalized, employed as a Forger/Iron Works. Married 7 years (1902/1903)
Emma, age 37(1873/1873), born in Norway, immigrated 1893/(citizenship status is not shown as women had the same citizenship as their husbands until 1922), mother of 2/1 living.
Roy, age 4(1905/1906), born in Illinois

The 1920 Census of Pigeon Creek, Dakota County, NE.
Henry Sundt, age 44(1875/1876), immigrated 1885/Pa (means he had filed his Declaration of Intention to become a US Citizen, but had not yet been naturalized. He was a Farm Laborer, living in the home of Fred Saunders.
--This same person was living in Omadi, Dakota County, NE during the 1910 Census. He was listed as being a laborer, age 33(1876/1877) born in Germany, a Blacksmith. He was Single.
----So, it does not appear this Henry Sundt was the same person that was living in Chicago in 1910, married to Emma.

There was a Heinrich Sund that immigrated in 1885 with his parents, Fritz and Caroline on the ship Moravia. He was nine years of age (1875/1876). This age and immigration data does match with the second person found, the one found in Nebraska.

There was also a Heinrich Sund that arrived in Illinois (via a Canadian route) in 1848, age 25 (born about 1823). But this would be a third known possible "Henry" Sund.

There is a "Hein Sund" buried in the Dakota City Cemetery in Dakota (city), Dakota County, Nebraska. This person died 23.12.1894, at age 53 years, 9 months and 15 days ( 8 March 1841)

I find a Heinrich Niclas Sundt, born 8 Mar 1841 in Germany, died 23 Dec 1894 in Nebraska. He was married to a Mary Stading. They had a son, John Frederick Sund, born 30 Dec 1868 in Behrenwalde, Germany, died in South Dakota in 1943. This person is the most likely that I have found to be correct.
--His father was Erdman Christian Sundt, born 28 Jan 1808 in Behrenwald.
--Erdman's father was Heinrich Christoff Sundt

If the last person is who you seek, there are many posted family trees concerning him; however, with very limited information.

Please identify the person you are seeking with more detail.

--"Pa" on the census stands for "Papers" meaning the person had filed their Declaration of Intention to become a citizen. It DOES NOT mean Pending Papers or Pending Application. The other poster continuously states this and is continuously in error. The instructions to the eumerators identified this to be used.
-- http://www.mytrees.com/Naturalization.html Under the paragraph of "How to Start Research" this is explained.

---In the instructions to the enumerators is found, as example for the 1900 Census: http://usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/inst1900.shtml :
-----#151. Column 18. Naturalization.—If the persons is a native of the United States, leave the column blank. If he was born abroad, and has taken no steps toward becoming an American citizen, write "Al" (for alien). If he has declared his intention to become an American citizen and taken out his "first" papers, write "Pa" (for papers). If he has become a full citizen by taking out second or final papers of naturalization, write "Na" (for naturalized).

Thank you to person who was posting about my grandpa Nemer. I was only 3 when he passed away.

I would love to find the article in Capper's Weekly.
That was my grandpa Sam Nemer, who did go all over the Midwest selling clothing. I love to hear the stories from my Uncle Tony (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

Our work ethic is something that is such a gift,to know I learned from my father Everett. We are hard working, very determined people, who don't give up. Having a setback myself, I REFUSE to give in (torn cartilege in knee and torn rotator cuff), yet that part of me, won't give into feeling pity, just feeling determined to hurry this thing up, so I can get moving again.

I really miss working in my dad and Uncle Tony's store, 5th St. Grocery. I am everything I am because of them. I love them both dearly.

The stories are so wonderful, and I am so very grateful to read them. So grateful. Thank you for taking time to post this information. God Bless you!

I don't know much more about Sam Nemer, but I do remember in the sixty's my mother subscribed to a little paper called the "Cappers Weekly" and someone from Kansas had wrote in it that they remembered a pedler named Sam Nemer coming around selling his goods. I always wondered if that as the same Sam Nemer. If so, he must have traveled a very large area.

One more thing. Some time back someone was telling me that he went to Crookston with his dad (who grew up in the Crookston area) to visit Sam. It was mealtime, and Sam was using Syrian bread for his plate, and when he finished, he rolled up the bread and ate that too.
I was called to an old Syrian lady in Valentine in the sixty's to repair some appliance, (she called everybody 'Honey') she and her and her daughter were making Syrian bread. With the oven turned very hot, they would throw the bread on a rack and slam the door, leaving it for a short time and then flipping it over and again for a short time in the oven. Had to repair the springs on the oven door at times too.
Another time an old lady, I think Lebanese, needed some repair on a refrigerator. It was a simple repair, and when finished she asked what she owed, I said "two dollars" then realizing she didn't have any money when she said, "Catch me next time, O.K.?" I said "OK". Then she said "wait, I give you some Syrian bread," So I went home with 3 or 4 pieces of bread.

There was a first marraige to an "Unknown Kline" in 1868. She married George B. in 1869. I have a copy of their marriage license and certificate. It's posted online.

Here is the full obituary:
Mrs. Geo. G. Zarr died at her home in this city early Wednesday morning, after a prolonged illness, and was buried yesterday. Her obituary will be published next week.
(The Republican, Valentine, NE - Friday, May 17, 1895)

Mrs. Caroline Zarr, the subject of this notice, was born in Colombia county, Penn., in the year 1842. Of her girlhood we know nothing. In the year 1869 she married Mr. Geo. B. Zarr, their home was for a number of years in York county, Neb. As a result of their marriage six children were born unto them; three of the six are now living and one by a former marriage.
Mrs. Zarr lived one of those perfect, pure, generous lives that are a wonder to all who behold them. Patient, gentle and affectionate she at once won the love of all who met her. Her home since 1883 has been in Valentine.
Sister Zarr was one of the carter members of the M.E. church of this place. Her devoton to her church, like her love for her children, was a part of her life. For some time she had been unable to attend the services of the church, yet she always inquired into its welfare. One of her greatest desires was to attend the dedication of the new church, but was unable to be present. For eighteen months she had been a constant sufferer and always expresed trust in and love for her Savior, and while she desired to recover on account of her family she would say: "God's will, not mine, be done." Her life was her best eulogy.
On Wendesday morning, May 15, 1895, her spirit left the tired, worn body and went to its reward. We stood beside the casket in which rested the beloved form and could but exclaim: "Oh, may our last end be like her's - ripened grain into the garner!"
On Thursday the funeral service was held in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. O.L. Ramsey. Many of the friends gathered there to tender their sympathy and their respect. We shall miss her in the church, in our families, in our homes, no one an take her place, but in her own home among her children and grandchildren "mother" will be missed always. He life, her prayers, the remembrance of her kindly advice - these are left us. It is well, God's ways are always right.
(The Republican, Valentine, NE - Friday, May 24, 1895)

Olive VanMetre in her book "The Old Town" gives this account:
George B. Zarr was oen of the seven Republicans elected in the November election of 1885. He defeated Homer Bisbee for the position of county judge and served two terms.
Zarr was born Oct. 22, 1845, in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, came to Lincoln, Nebr in 1870, and moved to Cherry County in 1883. They lived in the Seven Creeks community called PenBrook. He represented that part of the county as county commissioner for two years before he was elected judge.
Zarr began taking over the duties of his predecessor immediately, for Doc Lewis wanted to look after his drug business in Chadron.
On the first of January, 1886, Judge Zarr brought up his family from Pen Brook, which included his wife, Caroline, their healthy brood of six, a step-daughter (handicapped, I believe) amd a foster chld or two. The household was soon expanded because Mrs. Zarr had a way of taking county patients, the "lame, the halt, and the blind" to room and board. She also went out frequenty to help those who were in need in their own homes.
Caroline Zarr was born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, in 1842, and was married to George in 1869. She was a gentle, patient, hard-working woman to whom the life of prayer was meat and drink. She was a charter member of the M.E. Church in Valentine. She died May 15, 1895, and was buried in the Holsclaw cemetery west of town. Her body still rests there, for she was never removed.
Judge Zarr passed away July 11, 1915, at Sheridan, Wyoming, after an illness of one day. He had been living with his daughter, Mrs, Daisy Crowley, for the two years prior to his death. He was also survived by his daughter, Albina (Bina) Holsclaw of Chadron. Her husband, Wesley, was the son of Rev. S.W. and Rebecca Holsclaw of Valentine.
Zarr was also survived by his son, Mark, who was foreman of the "Valentine Democrat" for many years. Burial was in the Sheridan Cemetery.
Yes, Musser place would have been in the area, maybe about 10 miles SE of the Churn, or today, about 4 miles south of Jerry Adamson. Not sure how you could get there today, not much for roads in that area.

Thanks for your information. My Grandfather James Virgil MUSSER'S ranch was located at T. 31 R 35 Sect. 21. He had 640 acres so that would not have been too far from there. Someday, I hope to make it out that way and find the land he had and be able to take a few picturs even though it has likely changed some in the area, it would at least give me an idea what it looks like. Thanks.

Jim

A few more things: The August Fleischman homestead was located about 20 miles south and then west of highway 83,in the Ballard Marsh area, proved up in 1891 as SE 1/4, SW 1/4, Sec 35, TP 31 and NW 1/4 & Lot 3, Sec 2, TP 30 R 28.
Wood Lake would have probably been his address in the early days, as the easiest way to get to the area's south of Valentine was to go to Wood Lake (maybe by rail) and then follow the valley's west. This would have been easier than to cross over the sand hills south.
The Bailey Post office was located in Barley precinct.

The Churn Ranch would have been about 10 miles south and about 6 - 7 miles east of Merriman, or about 11 miles south and 3 - 4 miles west of the Eli turnoff.

I am looking for any information on Darrell Johnson. He is the adopted son of Dr. Wilbur and Marjorie Johnson of Valentine, Nebraska. Darrell went to high school at Valentine High School in the late 50's. We know he was a member of the band and the "V" club. He was last heard from approx. 1962 and his birth family is trying to locate him. It was last heard that he was thinking of joining a commune that year, but that it burned down and he has been feared dead. Any information, pictures or newspaper articles would be greatly appreciated. His adopted parents are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

This is from "Compendium of History and Biography of Western Nebraska" about 1905. (can be found on the internet)
The Churn Ranch
Among the most successful ranch enterprises of Cherry county none has merited a wider reputation than that known in local parlance as "The Churn." The ranch house is situated on secton 5, township 32, range 36, and is without doubt one of the largest and finest dwellings in the ranch region of western Nebraska. It was erected in 1902, is two stories high, containing fourteen rooms, including a large bath-room with running water to supply domestic needs. The barn is also one of the largest in the range country, and is but one of a number of large buildings and sheds with which the place is equipped. An elevated reservoir, served by its own windmill, gives water presssure sufficient to throw a stream above the house in case of fire. There is shed room for teh sheltering of three thousand head of stock, with convenient corrals surrounding, and all supplied with an abundance of good water. Not the least attractive feature of the ranch in the groves, five in number, which have attained a growth far beyond the usual plantings in the west. There are sixteen wells and windmills on the place affording an abundance of good water. The ranch contains something over four thousand acres, much of which is fine hay land with five hundred acres seeded to alfalfa, which in this region attains luxurious growth. There are at all times about two thousand head of cattle and two hundred head of horses on the place, al of a high grade of breeding. The ocmpany that established this ranch was organized January 1st, 1886, consisting of Shadbolt, Fleischman, Trowbridge & Gates, the latter of whom sold out to his three partners. Later Trowbridge sold to Hubert Shadbolt (brother of George E.Shadbolt), and the firm name was then changed to Shadbolt Bros.& Fleischman. William Fleischman still retaining his interest throughout the different changes of ownership.

The Shadbolt brothers were born in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, Hubert, the elder, now residing at Emmetsburg, Iowa. He left home to make his own way in life at the age of sixteen, while George lived with his parents until completing his eighteenth year. After spending four years in colorado, mostly following the range, he travelled as far west as Oregon, looking the ocuntry over for a good location for an enterprise such as they have since organized, and finding nothing in the far west seemingly superior to Nebraska, came to Cherry county in 1886 and became a partner in organizing the ranch afterwards known as "The Churn."
William Fleishan is a native of Germany, after immigration lived in Wisconsin a few years prior to joining the company organizing "The Churn," which he did January 1st, 1886.
Mr. George E. Shadbolt was married on December 14th, 1904, to Miss Anna Thompson. They have two daughters, Viola Theresa and Ella Leona.
The hospitality of "The Churn" is proverbial. Everywhere western hospitality is cordial, but that dispensed at the above ranch is the essence of the best, it being made the stopping place of freighters and travellers going to or from the railroad stations,as well as for those passing through the region east or west. An intersting picture of the "Churn Ranch" property will be found on another page of this volume.
Martin

Hi,

Thanks for answering my message. I too have that Cherry County book you mentioned. Although there is not a lot of info I guess every little bit can be of help.

Offhand, I do not know if that Logan C. MUSSER is a relative or not. I haven't been able to connect with him.

My Grandfather James Virgl MUSSER had a homestead there in Cherry County from 1912-1918. He had 640 acres of land which he rented out. He did not have to live on it full time but just part of the year. He made the necessary improvements for the homestead and he was a single man while there. He sold his land because he had to go into WWI. He worked for another ranch owner named Fred T. NELSON much of the time he was there.

He worked on the Churn Ranch for a few years before getting his homestead land. William FLEISCHMAN was one of the partners for the ranch. I found my Grandfather on the 1910 Federal Census of Cherry County, NE near Valentine. His post office address was Bailey or sometimes I've seen it as Barley, but it should by Bailey. In this census it does not have William FLEISCHMAN as being married. It has him as single and 61 years old so he would have been born about 1849 in Germany. Living with him were five hired hands including my grandfather.

Yes there was another William FLEISCHMAN, I believe in the 1900 Census of Cherry County also. He was born at Wood Lake on 16 FEB 1895 and died on 28 AUG 1957 like you mentioned. So, these two fellows would be different. This August FLEISCHMAN was married to an Auguste KION. I believe these were his parents. That's about all I know. I think the FLEISCHMAN of the Churn Ranch may have lived in WI for a time also before going to Nebraska. Perhaps this William of the Churn Ranch was a brother to your August or depending on when your August was born-could they have been a grandfather and grandson? Hopefully, this is a little help.

Jim
Jim,
I am also looking for any information on William Fleischmann and the Churn Ranch. My relatives, the August Fleischman family, immigrated from Prussia in 1888 and first went to Wood Lake, Nebraska. I am sure of this because several of his children were born their. His family moved on to Oregon after a few years.

I believe that there may be a connection to William Fleischmann because the German immigrants tended to follow family into the interior of the United States. Another coincidence that may link William and August is that August's brother came a few years earlier and he had connections to people in Wisconsin.

I recently purchased a copy of "An Early History of Cherry County." It has a brief mention of William Flieschman and a short paragraph about Logan C Musser (the president of Fawn Lake Ranch). Is this Musser relayed to you?
The book mentions four Nelsons but not a Fred.
