I have posted about 40 pics on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=75263&l=61731&..., most of which are unidentified. Please take a look and see if you can identify any of the people. I think they're all connected to the Carpenter, Judd, and Kitt families (who are connected to each other) in Chase, Red Willow and Dundy counties. Please contact me at bvalco[at]comcast.net if anyone is familiar to you. Many Thanks! Beverly

Where was the Original Town of Imperial Located

I have found where the town of Imperial was located on the east and west Grant Highway and then the buildings were moved to where the town is now located. What high way was then considered the Grant Highway? When was the town relocated and why?

It also states that the town was formed on the homesteads of Thomas Mercer and Melville J. Goodrich. The Grant High way was where the buildings were built with one side of the street on Mercer property and the other side Goodrich Property.

This took place in the late 1885 and is signed by Benjamin Harrison, President and M. McKean, Secretary.

My great-grandfather Leverett Storm moved to Chase County on May 5, 1886. He lived in Jamestown Precinct. I have not been able to determine exactly where that is on the map. I assume somewhere in the NW corner of the county close to the Colorado line. I was told he had the first matched team of horses in that part of Nebraska. His wife died in 1898 and he died in Venango in 1901, when my grandfather was 8. We know very little about his dealings because of his pre-mature death.

Larry

Thank you for sharing this written by George Banks, Sr. It is very interesting. I am working on my father's Family line.
My Father Clifford Charles Hancock's Great Grandparents Nathanial Sylvester Hancock and Francis Hickerson Hancock along with their son Charles Hancock and his wife Cynthia "Jennie" Applegate Hancock and Charles's siblings settled in Chase County's Hamilton later called Champion, NE. in the Spring of 1886.
They origianlly were from Licking County, Ohio and traveled out west with other settlers.
My father's grandparents Benjamin Fulk and Annie Creed Fulk also settled in Benkelman, NE in the 1800's.
Clifford Charles Hancock's families were friends with the Banks Families and had great memories of them. He was friends and attended school with Lloyd Banks. My father Clifford was born in 1918 in Champion, NE. and sadly passed away in August of this year.
"ONCE UPON A TIME"

"It was truly "Once Upon A time." I had convinced myself it was to be the usual, long monotonous train trip to Imperial from McCook.

One of those warm September days when the Nebraska landscape has a mysterious cast and I, at least, could go in fancy back through the years. Back through the years of the coming of the homesteader, the ranchman and still farther back to the time when the Indian found here a hunter's paradise.
The train moved slowly on and having my curiousity aroused, I ventured the usual remarks about the weather, crops and whatnot. The lady with who I had timidly started the conversation, replied "I have just been visiting the scenes of my early married life at Wauneta Falls. My son Champion Chase Rowley was the first white child born in Chase County."

I knew enough of the early history of Chase County to know who she was so lost no time in asking questions. As near as I can remember, this is what she told me.

"We, my husband, my mother and I came to Wauneta Falls in the early days and started ranching. Our household goods including an old fashioned square piano was brought overland the long trek to our new home. Among our helpers was a negro man cook who proved to be a treasure when our great trouble came.
Life went on as usual on a cattle ranch in those days. Horse back riding was my chief pastime and it later proved a great blessing to me as the training I had in the way carried me and mine to safety.
It was my husband's custom to go to one of towns on the Union Pacific for mail and supplies. This he did at intervals and we thought little of danger when he started out. The time came for one of these trips but time he never returned.
He had attended to his mission in the town, and was following the usual trail that would take him by a spring at the head waters of the north fork of Spring Creek. As neared the spring, he was evidently attacked by a band of Souix Indians; murdered and robbed. What evidences remained of the tragedy, indicated he had been brutally killed without a chance of defense.
News had reached the ranch in the meantime of the warlike Sioux and that they were coming in our direction. We hurriedly got our silver and other valuables that could be carried on horseback and started on the long trek to Arapahoe, the nearest haven of safety.
I rode all night without resting, carrying my baby son with me on the horse's back. It nearly broke my heart to have to leave my piano as it was a source of great pleasure to me on the ranch. I little knew how much greater loss I could and even then had sustained.
The Soldiers eventually overtook the maurauders but not until they had played havoc as they went, doing considerable damage to our home.
One of the men who lived along farther up the Frenchman went insane from fright. He happened to be the brother of the man I afterward married and with who I am making this trip.
Of course, I met him, Louis Armacost, and a very interesting gentleman he proved to be. Mr. Armacost had been a cowboy on th Rowley ranch at the time of the exodus."

Some where among my various scrapbooks, I have a picture of Champion Chase Rowley and a short sketch of his life. If and when I come across it I will try to have the biography copied and send it to the Chase County Historical Society. Mr. and Mrs. Armacost were living in the state of Washington at the time I met her. Emma Shallenberger
(Emma Shallenberger, wife of O.P. Shallenberger, was before her marriage a daughter of Judge james Burke of Imperial, Nebraska, all pioneers of Chase County.)"

Notice: Mrs. Armacost claims that her son Champion Chase Rowley was the first white child born in Chase Co.

In a talk at the Historical Society Meeting Oct. 11, 1938 by C. N. Cottrell.........
"My experience would date from the spring of 1886, and would be about the organization of the County that Mr. L. W. Smith spoke aboout.

There was no organized Chase County in 1885. We were taken from Hayes County in June, 1886, and Governor Dawes appointed the first set of officers, entirely. The commissioners, judge, clerk and all.

The first County Clerk was John McClellan of Wauneta. County Treasurer was Horace or Hod Cole. The County Judge was Carpenter. He was the first appointed Judge, but not the first elected Judge. The first commissioners were Charley Fisher of Wauneta, A.S. Allen of Lamar, which was known as Allendale at that time in honor of this A. S. Allen, and J. I. Mosberger of Champion, which was then called Hamilton. The sheriff was Robert Mulligan, he was the first appointed sheriff and the first elected sheriff also.

The first child born in Chase County, as far as we know, was Mrs. Bert Crandall, who was Maude McClellan, or else Mrs. John Newman, my daughter Inez Cottrell. We never knew for sure just which was the first.

The County Superintendent was W. A. Reed, and he organized School District No. 1, which is still No. 1. Then District No. 2, south of the river, Imperial No.3, and Lamar No. 4, the first three still are the original districts. Mr. Reed used to drive around in an old spring wagon."

The stories were written in 1938. One of the stories by K. S. Douglass who lived in the Bussell Precinct states: "Bussell Precinct has had its part in County affairs. E. B. Sutton (deceased)was County Treasurer, I believe two terms. Earn Walker, Harry Jeff Goddard and J.S. Mayo (deceased) each having served as county commissioners."
"Among those engaged in Educational work came names such as Ida Kimberling, County Superintendent, prominent among the teachers wereMrs. J. B. Layman, Clara Hickman, Minnie Kimberling, Nellie Kimberling(deceased), Lou Freeland Schultz, (deceased) Eva Freeland Martin, Anna Freeland Douglass, Leota Mayo Statz of years gone by. An attempt will not be made to name the later teachers."

Also in a story written by F.A. Freeland mentioned "called a meeting at the Goddard Schoolhouse......"

I have not found Goddard mentioned in more stories.

i have information that relatives of my great great grandfather lived and died in chase county. i am looking for a death date and burial place for one in particular. his name is michael abitz. he would be my great great grandfathers father. i know he lived with his son, martin, in 1900 in canby pct. in chase county. at the time he was 87 years old. he is not on the 1910 census and my gues is he died between 1900 and 1905. a long shot would be after 1905 but i dont think so. 1910 martin lived in the imperial pct. in chase county. i think michael may of died either in canby or imperial pct. if anyone can help or related to these persons it would be greatly appriecated. any questions or information please email me.

Louis B. Neuman's b-day is wrong. I will ask my mom for the correct date, but he served in WWI, and was in his 90's when he passed, and that was in the late 80's, so, he was born prior to the turn of the century.

I do have pics of grave markers for several members of the McBride and Stinnette families. Will send copies if you'd like. Also one for a Helen Grace Lawrence (1913-1913).

According to the 1920 census, there was also a son named Ray. I have a photo of a marker for an Arthur Ray Stinnette, 1913-1986, US Army, WWII. Beverly (bvalco@comcast.net)

Hi Beverly, thank you for replying to my post. I would really like to have information on Sam's parents and grand parents if you have it. And the photos would be great along with Rays marker. Ray was not the son of Eva but of her sister Ophra who was the first wife of Sam, she died in 1915, and is buried in Moorefield, Frontier Co. Eva and Sam were married shortly after that.

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=shatch2&I11.x=...

Hi Scott,

Beverly sent me the link to your query. Samuel Stinnette was the son of Edward Thomas Stinnette (1846-1925) and Sarah Elizabeth Morris (1846-1920). Edward Thomas was my great-grandfather, and my grandfather was his second to youngest son, Robert Lee (5 years younger than Samuel), therefore making Samuel my great grand-uncle.

I have information on the Stinnettes dating back many years and would be happy to send you the link to my tree here on ancestry.com. If you haven't looked, try posting your query on rootsweb -- there's a Stinnett (no "e") mailing list there that stays fairly active and folks may have more information regarding the Lawrence connections (which I don't have). I know there are descendants of other siblings to Samuel on the list.

~Kris

Writen by George Banks, Sr.

Printed in the "History of chase County' By The Chase County Historical Society December 1938

"Early Experiences in Chase County, Nebraska of George Banks, Sr."

"I came to chase County on March 3, 1886, along with quite a few other settlers. Most of them later went back to where they came from, except the Gardners and Val and Angelo Hill, who still live in this County. There were two brothers of the Gardners. We came from Iowa to Holdrege on the train, shipping by frieght our horses and farm machinery, wagons and so on. The minister who preached at our church in Iowa told us about this part of the country. He thought it was wonderful, and he was responsible for quite a number of families from there coming out here. It was at Holdrege that we met Val and Angelo Hill and as they said they were coming to Chase County too, we traveled together. Most of us who settled in Canby Precinct were Scotch."

"In Iowa I was a coal miner, but had a farm and a man to work it for me. I had never plowed a furrow before coming to this country. I sold my farm in Iowa and used the money to settle here."

"When we arrived in Holdrege there was a very bad snow storm and blizzard, and we had to stay there several days before we could come on. The snow was from six to eight inches deep. The storm finally stopped and we came on the rest of way in covered wagons. We did not have our families with us when we first came out but sent for them later after we were settled a little."

"When we first got here we thought it was a wonderful country. There were many lakes and lagoons and little creeks, as there had been much rain and snow that winter, and just thousands of wild ducks, geese and all kinds of wild game. We thought it wold be like that all the time, but later the water holes and lagoons and creeks dried up, and when it didn't rain the drouths were as bad or worse than now. I have seen cane and corn that didn't grow over three feet tall for lack of moisture."

"A man by the name of Cap Hayes located me and most of the fellows who came in the same bunch with me. We had to go to McCook to file our claims. There were three different kinds of claims we could take at that time. The Pre-emption claim, Tree claim and a homestead."

"A lot of us including Tom and John McGinnis, Old Mr. Holstead, who is the father of Mrs. Angelo Hill, John Alexander, Judge McCawley, Val and Angelo Hill and the Gardners got our homesteads and settled in what is now Canby Precinct. About the first thing we did was get together and build a school house. It was made of sod and is where District #22 now stands. We also organized a Sunday School and held the meetings in the schoolhouse. It was one of the first Sunday Schools organized in Chase County. This same Sunday School is still in existence out in Canby Precinct, except that those attending now are the children and grandchildren of the organizers."

"We sent for our families then and built sod houses to livein. Our barns, chicken houses, cow sheds and all out buildings were made of sod. The first houses had nothing but dirt floors and then later we put in wood floors. We plastered them on the inside and many were papered also. I was a plasterer and did a lot of that kind of work. One time I plastered for a family living near Lamar, and when I had finished they said they could not pay me. They had just killed their winter's supply of meat, about five or six deer, which were hanging out in the yard, so I asked them to give me one of the deer for my pay and they gladly did so. There were quite a few deer here then and many antelope, but we didn't often kill any, so it was quite a treat for us, and a surprise to my family when I came riding home with a big deer across my horse. We gave our neighbors some of it , too."

"There were only a few houses in Imperial when we first came. Mr. C. N. Cottrell was here, and Mr. Fliesbaugh. Thomas Mercer had the post office and one of the fist houses in town. Mrs. Cottrell used to bake bread for some of us who hadn't gotten our families out here yet. She was a good cook and a very nice young lady."

"The first house built in Canby Precinct was for a man by the name of John Alexander and was made of sod. It stood about where the Adam Jaeger place is now. The first election held in Canby Precinct was about 1888 and was held in the farm house of a man called Judge McCawley. His place was about where the Casebeer place now is."

"I helped dig the first well in Canby Precinct. Before that we had to drink water out of the creeks and lagoons and we didn't like that very well. After the well was dug the people living around there hauled the water in barrels to their homes. There were no roads then, and when we went from one place to another we just set out across the prairie. There were many buffalo trails, and we sometimes followed them from one place to another."

"All of the supplies here, like lumber, food supplies, wagons, hardware and so on, had to be hauled by wagon. I had some very good horses and did a lot of hauling from Ogallala, Benkelman and Stratton. We got about $15.00 a trip. I hauled some of the first loads of supplies to Mr. Cottrell and Mr. Fliesbaugh. It took a day to get there and two days to come back loaded. We would stop at night about half way back and feed our horses and eat a little supper and stay the night. After our fire went down a little the wolves and coyotes would start howling and would keep us awake a lot. They wanted to get to our horses."

"There were no fences from here to Colorado then, and we had to lariat our horses to keep them from running away. There were many bands of wild horses here then and our horses wanted to join them whenever a bunch came near. We had to go out and simply hold them as much as we could to keep them from breaking their ropes and running away. I have seen bunches of wild horses over a mile long, with a leader at the head of the column."

"After the first year or so times got hard, much harder than any since and I would hate to see anyone have to go through what we went through then. I have hauled corn from here to Grant and then got 10 cents a bushel for it, and have sold hogs for 2 1/2 cents a pound at Wauneta. However all of us early settlers went through the same hard times. There was nothing but prairie and all we had was what we brough with uss"
------December 7, 1938

Charles & Cynthia Anderson Ferrel of Lamar, Chase Co., NE

I am looking for a time period that Charles and Cynthia Anderson Ferrel were living in Lamar, Chase County, after living in Venango, Perkins County, Nebraska and if they had any children with them. So far I have found at least three children, Cornelius, Elfie/Effie, and Grover; all born in Iowa, around 1879. The last census that I find the Ferrel family is in 1880 in New London, Henry County, Iowa. From a photo, I believe that they moved on to Lamar, Nebraska, then to Loveland, Colorado and Cynthia dies in 1941. I think Cynthia may have died in Loveland and would like to find an obit and death and burial information. Any clues to this family is appreciated.
