Edward J. Shonka was my great grandfather and I'm working on family geneology now. My Mom's cousin Erma Bartek did a great geneology booklet a few years ago and I actually used the info to arrange a visit with Shonka distant cousins in Bechenye Bohemia a few years ago. I'm glad to share any information. Tom Wilcox (son of Martha Marie Shonka, the daughter off Edward J. Her husband, Philip Benes of Valparasio NE (1924-1997) looks to have lived in the same house the entire time they were married, until her death. Her children (my biological father) were born in the 1950's (Alois, Philip, Anthony, Eugene, Kathleen, Marianne BENES), but looking at Anthony's wedding announcement in 1975, she had already died. I cannot find out anything about her online (death, or any other mention of here on than in Anthony's announcement). Currently, contacting the BENES family is not an option, but may come to that eventually. She was originally a BARTEK, and thru census, I have a lot of her other family members info, just NOTHING on her. Is there more info that I can try to locate for you? I do have an anniversary book somewhere in storage on the Philip/Bernice (second wife) Benes family, but I don't recall it mentioning anything on Mary/Marie either....I will continue to look for that book as well. Thanks for any help you may be able to help me with.

Jenn Rasp-Vaughn

Hello Jean - I'm John Vidlak - Great-Great Grandson of Johan/John & Marie/Mary. I've been doing some family research and saw this posting - by chance would you still be willing to send me a copy of that manifest?

My Great Grand Father was James/Vaclav/Jim/Wenzl - who married Frantiska Simond in 1894 and settled near Abie. One of his son's Frank was my Grandfather and his son Frank Jospeh Vidlak was may dad.

Frantiska's father was Joseph Simond - immigrated to the US in 1861 from France - joined the Union Army in 1862 and survived the Civil War. He married Mary Stiava June 17, 1874 in Fremont, NE almost a year after Frantiska was born.

Anyway - I have more family history to share if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the info you posted.

The two townships I am principally working on are Linwood and Skull Creek. As far as the microfilm goes, we have it at the public library here in Omaha, and I look at it, and have NO problem most of the time reading the names. As I indicated in my poem, when they can't get Mahoney and Flemming right, the Czech names don't stand a chance. I'm also working on Clay county, where my husband's Czech side is from. There's one that is completely indecipherable, but again, I fixed a couple dozen, and so has an acquaintance from my home town who has relatives there. A couple of the sad ones in that county are Erans instead of Evans (he was the census taker) and Pead instead of Pearl.

I was out in the Abie/Linwood/Appleton area in late summer 2008 with a couple of friends. We visited about 8 cemeteries that day. A couple in Colfax, and 6 in Butler. I ran out of memory in my camera.

I read the Shonka/Roh discussion with interest, as I know some people by those names, although not well.

Delighted to see another person who researches more than just your own family. Just to make sure -- are you aware of the Ancestry feature where you can document alternate (correct) spellings of the names? Your source -- a plat map from a certain year -- would be excellent for documentation. Me, I'm mostly referring to the Margie Sobotka book, which has data from about 1890-1895, and which is also indexed on Ancestry. Sometimes I refer to a later census. BTW, which township are you working on? No need for us to duplicate efforts.

1885 Butler County Census Woes

Anyone who has used the 1885 Nebraska Census index knows that it is an exercise in perseverance because of how badly the names were transcribed. On the day I found a fairly common Irish name mangled, I was inspired to write this ditty. (Once in a while we need some humor. All the names are real.)

When Slama is a Llama,
And Sramek turns out Framck,
No surprise that Kastl's Jaell
Or sometimes even Rastt.

Is Mary really Maly?
Is Pyhan really Pyke?
No -- Pylan should be Pelan
While Recraft should be Sleight.

Hannans should be Saunders(!)
And each Spotz should be a Spatz.
But wait -- perhaps I've got it wrong --
Are Spotz and Spatz all Shotz?

With Fleuney down for Flemming,
And Michiner as Mahoney,
All this makes me truly wonder --
Is this census index phoney?

------------------

Thank goodness Ancestry now has the feature where you can annotate name differences. I found 400 errors in one township in Butler County, and have been slowly documenting each one. If you are a subscriber, be sure you take care of the corrections you know of.

Thank you for writing from what I can find Mary Roh (1863-1956) married Frank Cemper (1863-1882; my ggg-grandfather)later to marry a Tom Beranek. Mary and Frank had a son also named Frank Cemper (1883-1975; my ggrandfather) who married Antonia Fendrick their son Edward was my grandfather. Apparently Frank is a very popular name in our family and you're right most of the Cemper's are in David City.

The Shonka's came into play when Mary Roh and Franks daughter Mary "Mammie" Cemper married Anton William Shonka in about 1905.

The Catholic church in David City has a wonderful genealogy department.

I am the Lacy who posted the older message. I find nothing about the Cemper family in my Shonka file. I offer this from an old letter from the 1980's from Emma Bartek.
" The Baranek infor.( of yours) Im going to send to a Betty Kobza, decendant of one of Mary Roh, Tom Beranek family. She is working on them, I just sent her a big envelope of Mary
( Roh) Cemper Shonka. She had one brother Frank Cemper and those decendents are all in the David City, Appleton area. Mary Cemper married Jim Kovar, Mildred Cemper married Marcel Kovar Sr."
Please note I see a Marcel Kovar listed in the David City Phone book. But I will not put his number on line.

Yes it is sad how bad the spelling is on the 1885 Census record. While on Ancestry I printed off an entire township that I was working on then used an old plat map to find the correct spelling of the names and wrote them on the pages.

Just another comment to you. I live in Alexis Twp. of Butler County, right along the Platte River, I have lived here for 60 years so I know a lot of the names of those who lived in this area. My husbands family were early settlers in the Rising City, Surprise area. So between the two of us we may know a lot of the names in these areas. Really I live right on the Platte and Butler County Line. in the north west corner of Butler County.

My work was in Granville Twp. of Platte County Nebraska and
one or two townships in Colfax co. Ne. one was Shell Creek.
I am thinking it was the persons who did the indexing of the 1885 census that did the misspelling and that if one would read the 1885 film the spelling would be more correct. Of course I know it is not always easy to be able to read the film. The David City Library has the 1885 film. The 1885 Platte County film can be found in the Kin Seekers Library that is the local Genealogy group. I have a 1889 Plat Book of Butler County Nebraska. David City Library and the Nebraska State Archives also have a copy of this Plat Book The Book was rather expensive to aquire I paid close to $500.00 for it at Auction some years ago
