Thanks so much for your reply, Makes sense as there is an L.G. Phipps listed as attending her mother Dolly's funeral in Pender newspapers in October 1931 (without explaining if he was a friend or relative). Dolly herself was born in Craig in 1892 to the colorful Brown family (who left Craig about 1907), but was adopted by John & Matilda (Davis) Smith who lived in the Craig/Oakland area before moving to Pender in 1900. Turns out Matilda's sister was none other than Hannah (Davis) Phipps -- Lawrence Phipps mother (meaning Betty's adoptive father was himself by adoption her first cousin, once removed!)
