Oh my, you are an angel. I looked everywhere for them in 1930, but only found them together up until the 1925 Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas census. I had found a newspaper article in The Lincoln Daily Star, Lincoln, Neb. dated Feb. 27, 1917 when H. C. Yarwood accepted the position as manager of the carpet and furniture store of Sweser and Co. He succeeded L. C. Hurford who had handed in his resignation a few weeks before. Mr. Hurford had been connected with Mr. Sweser 23 years. At the end it showed David City Enterprise.

I don't know if Mary Faith would be buried there or not.
Her death certificate showed she died 3 Sept 1979 in the Homestead Nursing Home and under Burial it showed Removal, Sept 3, 1979, then Anatomical Board (U.N.) to Omaha, Neb., Funeral Home Roper and Sons, Inc., Lincoln, Neb. I don't know what Anatomical Board means unless she donated her body to science. I haven't seen this before.

Thank you so very much. This answers my question about Louis Hurford. Mary Faith (Feldkirchner) Hurford is on my Hetler family tree from Lee Co., IL.

Elsie

Louis Collier HURFORD b. 11 Aug 1875 Butler Co., Neb. the s/o Oliver Hurford and Louisa (Coon) Hurford, died after 1920 but when and where?

Louis Hurford married a 2nd time 5 Jan. 1918 to Mary Faith FELDKIRCHNER b. 20 Jan 1895, died 3 Sep 1979 in Lincoln, Lansaster Co., Neb., the dtr. of Ernest Feldkirchner and Imogene (HETLER) Feldkirchner. The marriage took place in Beatrice, Gage Co., Neb. at the Lutheran parsonage, Rev. A. M. Aetzel officiating. A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mr. E. Feldkirchner. "The couple will reside at David City where the groom is engaged in the furniture business".
(The Lincoln Daily Star, Lincoln, Nebraska Jan. 7, 1918, pg. 8.)
I was unable to locate Mary or Louis/Louie, L. C. Hurford anywhere in 1930. Mary Hurford was listed as a school nurse, Widow, in city directories for Lincoln, Neb. in the mid 1940's.

Does anyone know this family or their whereabouts in 1930?
Thank you.
Elsie

1885 census lookup for Bassett precinct, Brown county?

Would anyone there in Brown County have microfilm of the original 1885 census images they could do a look up? I've found a name in the Ancestry 1885 Nebraska index, but i think the name is so terribly misspelled, that its possible its my missing person.

I'm looking for an Ava Speck, born around 1867 in Iowa
The index shows an Eva Sproul, born 1868 in Iowa

The Ancestry index shows the record as: M352_03, Page 9
I'm hoping someone could look at the original entry, and see if by any chance they can make out the "Eva Sproul" as actually being an "Ava Speck" (or rule it out), and if so, what family members she may have been living with (Ava was an orphan from Iowa and may have lived in various homes, before later marrying in Saunders, Nebraska)

Thank you for any help,
Jean
jcharb8@msn.com

I'm still waiting for a death certificate from (Galesburg)Illinois. I found an obit for a Della A. McLane who died Oct. 20 1966. It listed brother Walter Sawyer of Ashland, Neb.;2 daughters Mildred Parsons, and Mrs. Frank Smith. I was hoping the death certificate would show if I had the right one. The same daughters are listed on the obit I have on John Sexton from Nebraska. On one of the census it showed Della and her daughters living with Robert McLane. That's how I found this obit. I was hoping to find a marriage license. Thanks for your help. I'll look into the info you gave me.

My husband's grandparents were in Brown County for about 8 years-1903-1911.They were listed in Johnstown Precinct at the time of the 1910 US Census. They bought land in Township Twenty-Nine (29), North of Range Twenty-Three (23), West of the 6th Principal Meridian containing six hundred forty one and 32nd acres in 1903. Family records say the youngest son was born in Ainsworth in 1908. My question is--did they live nearer Johnstown or Ainsworth??? Appreciate any help!
Ann Andersen

I know I didn't but I am terribly confused about that! It looks as if he bought a bunch of land on speculation. He bought the following-all in Twp 29 N of Range 23, W of 6th PM :
S 1/2 of NW 1/4 Section 2
SW 1/4 Section 3
SE 1/4 Section 3
SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 Section 4
NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 Section 9
N 1/2 of NW 1/4 Section 10
NE 1/4 Section 11
All this was on one deed of purchase in 1903 and the same on a deed of sale in 1912
.
So I really don't know where they lived but in the 1910 US Census they were listed in Johnstown Pct.

Can you figure anything out from the above??
Ann

Strong, Fred E. Furgason, Feruse E. 05-15-1905 93
Strong, William Tatro, Bessie 05-06 374
This information from the marriage list on the Brown Co. Ne web site. There is also the cemetery lists for Brown Co. on the web site and has Wm and Bessie burried in Ainsworth Cemetery. What else are you looking for? Wm Strong first appears in the 1910 census, as single, also on same page is listed a Sherman Strong, wife Ann E. Only Wm and Fred on 1920 census.
I have a copy of a platt map of Brown Co. If you sent me your e-mail address, I can send you copies showing where the land was on the sections you stated. I also have a 1912 map, but land is listed under different names. They would have been the closest to Johnstown, but Ainsworth was the county seat. My families lived north around what is now the Ainsworth Airport since the 1880's. If I can be of any more help, let me know.
Kathy Burchell

I will check on it nest week. We are leaving for thanksgiving weekend. I found Melissa on the 1900 census with her son William, in Monona Co. Iowa. Have you checked there for death of her. World Connect listed Harvey's death in Brown co. but no burial for him here. Possibly his body was returned to IA. Was not unkown at that time to havve family members take the body back by train. I also found John's brother Norman living in Blaine Co. NE on 1900 census. It is the county just south of Brown. On the same page is another Norman Allen, age 29, possibly his son. Williamis living in Brown Co., by 1910 census, with no Melissa with any family members. Consisdering her age, it would suggest she died in IA befor William came. Kathy

I live in Louisiana, but was born in Seattle and lived in Anacortes for the first 10 years of my life. Thanks to others, I have learned Benjamin Jenkins' parents were Benjamin and Keziah Jenkins of New York. Can anyone go back any further? I am looking for any other "kin folks". As a child living in Anacortes, my fathers' sister used to take me "East of the Mountians" to see her aunts, uncles and cousins, but don't remember exactly where in Washington.

Thank you so much for your reply. I had kind of put my genealogy research on hold for awhile. When I checked, I was pleasantly surprised at how many I would have to respond to. To my knowledge, there was only one Shirley Gibson in Springview, Nebraska. It is a very small town. I know her brother ran the movie theater in Ainsworth, but I think it very probable that their father helped or maybe even started it. I have photos of my grandmother when she was younger, please email me at kemmy@cox.net and I will send a photo to see if it is the Shirley you know.
Hi Laurie,
I too wish we could locate any photos from your John Henry Hendershot, his son Erastus, & granddaughter Ada's family. I did find some new info for you on Ada's daughter Winnifred and her two husbands, Howard Robbins & Joseph Walter Rings. Since all 3 died here in Washington, near where I live, I thought I'd try to see if I could locate their newspaper obits. I did post the death records for all 3 and the 1930 census record for Joseph Rings & his WW I Draft Registration record (that's the one that provided his middle name) in the History section on our "Hendershot/Hendershott Descendants" MyFamily.com site for us Hendershot C2 folks. I sent you off re-invitation, since your last log on was nearly a year ago.

Till later...
Bobbi

Hi Bobbi, I have been looking for a long long time now for any photos of John Henry Hendershot, his son Erastus, and his daughter Ada. Would you happen to know anyone who may have photos of this family line in C-2. John Henry Henry born 1802, son of Wm Scholl Hendershot, is brother to George Hendershot (your gg grandfather). I have looked in old books and contacted Columbia County Historical Society, have checked with many others who are connected to the Hendershot's - no luck at all with photos - not a single photo. My Aunt is the only one still living and she has no photo of Ada at all - Ada is her grandmother and she has no photos! Thanks Laurie Eyer McKenna

Based on information shown in the 1900 census, Eliza had married 22 years previously and had Clara in 1880 in Iowa. Clara and Eva's father was born in Iowa, and Eliza was born in Illinois. I checked the Iowa 1880 census for any good fits and found this one:

1880 Dodge, Boone, IA ED 2 sheet 4D 9 Jun 1880
33 35 Harris, Elijah 25 married carpenter OH New Eng PA
Eliza 20 wife IL PA IL
Robinson, George, 25 boarder, single, laborer Eng Eng Eng

Since Zora and Lydia were also in Dodge, Boone Co, IA in 1880, I think the chances are very good that this is Eliza and her first husband.

Hope this helps.

Jackie
Hi Owens folks!
I am taking time to study my Owens family history. I have a good start, but want to correspond with some of you that are surely ahead of me in my research!!! My Nicholas Owens, born in Va around 1807, probably a brother to Hardin Owens.
He moved on to Kentucky. By 1838 they are in Missouri.

Some of the children of this marriage are:

Samuel (marries a Colvin) dies in Brown co. Neb
John W. (also marries a Colvin)
Louisa (marries a Martin)
Amanda Jane (m robert Smith)
Elizabeth
Prince A.
Henry (m. Drucilla Smith)
Nicholas possibly burie in Brown co. Neb
Esther (m Ephriam Sizemore)
William (m. Nancy Martin)

I believe there are more. Possibly Sarah.
I would love to correspond with anyone connected to these families. I have a family site at myfamily.com. I would love to share my old photos and collect more.
This family moved to Nebraska around 1885. Some stayed there, in Brown county. Others moved on to South Dakota, and some on to Wa state.
Anyone wishing to view photos, email me at
nqh@earthlink.net or
nqhkay@myfamily.com
I would love to find the true father and family for Nicholas and where they originated. We believe it is either William or John.
Thanks Kay Hafer Neubauer
If you wish to call me, my number is 940-365-0044

I am trying to find where and when my great grandmother died. I have two different dates from other researchers but no real source. 7 April 1904 in Long Pine, Brown Co. NE. and the other 1907 Long Pine NE. Princess Jane Mark (Marks) born 18 Feb 1854 in OH. Her maiden name was Goodin. Parents were John Goodin and Sarah C. Briley. Princess (given name not a title) Jane married John William Mark (Marks) 8 June 1876 in Madison Co., Ohio. They had 10 children: Marion Grant, Mary Matilda, Charles A, Oscar Alvin (or it may have been Alvin Oscar), Ernest T, Eva J, Warren W, John W, and Lilly M. They lived in NE. from the early 1800’s until their deaths, mostly around Cherry Co., but Princess Jane and John William also lived in Brown Co., and Keya Paha Counties. I sent for a death certificate but Nebraska Vital Records has no record of her death. I have found Princess Jane using just the initial P. Jane and also Jane Mark. I would appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Sandy
Thanks for trying to help. Since I last posted, I have been in contact with a decendent of Melissa Knickerbocker/Allen, and he has a copy of her death certificate which states she died in Brown County, town of Ainsworth, death Oct. 15, 1910 of old age, place of burial, Ainsworth on Oct. 16, Informant was John Allen her son. There is other information on the cert. also of course. He will copy and send to me. So I am assuming that she has an unmarked grave.

Thanks again!

Thank you Kathy for trying to find the information I am seeking. Below is the information that most other researchers of this family have on RootsWeb WorldConnect, so that is all I have to go by. Melissa Knickerbocker Allen did have a son John Austin Allen living in Brown Co. too, he died in 1921 in Long Pine and is buried in Grandview Long Pine Cemetery. Maybe Melissa is buried in an unmarked grave

Thanks again for your time.

Cathie

ID: I17290
Name: Melissa Knickerbocker 1 2 3
Sex: F
Birth: 20 NOV 1819 in New York, USA 1 2 3
Death: 15 OCT 1910 in South Of Ainsworth, Brown County, Nebraska, USA 1 2 3
Change Date: 29 JUL 2006
Reference Number: 2836

Father: Peter Knickerbocker
Mother: Hannah Bailey

Marriage 1 Harvey Allen b: 19 NOV 1805 in New York, USA
Married: 1838 in ?potter County, Pennsylvania, USA 1 2 3
Thank you Kathy.

I haven't been able to get Harvey or Melissa actually 'buried'. And there are two different dates out there of the death of Harvey. One is 1881 and the other 1896. And of course one in Logan, Harrison Co. Iowa and the other in Brown Co. Nebraska. Depends on which researcher your listening to. Norman Allen I know for a fact died and was buried in Castana Iowa, he was born in 1842 and died in 1942, lived to be 100. I have his obit. I have some info. on Harvey & Melissa's other children, and quite a bit on John, but not his obit. And I wish I could get Harvey & Melissa buried someplace.

Thanks again.

I have a nice old photo of this family. It lists on the back the names and exact birthdates of each child, but it doesn't give the names of the parents or their dates of birth or where they were born. I wondered what their names were. I also have a large photo of the parents without their names. I am sure glad I stumbled on this site. I am the granddaughter of Floyd Jenkins, one of the sons who married Hattie Pearl Homan on 3-11-1903 in Ainsworth. They had two children, Goldie Belle Jenkins Marcoe and Lloyd Lewis Jenkins (my father) both born in Ainsworth. The family moved to Skagit County, Washington about 1914 or 1915. Several of the other brothers and sisters moved there also. I lived in Anacortes, WA until I was 10. I met a few sisters and brothers of my grandfather. My Aunt Goldie used to tell me she had cousins in Wisconsin and Nebraska that she corresponded with and I know she went to Wisconsin many times. I wish I would have questioned her about them. This is all I know about the Jenkins family so far. I have just started to do a family genealogy search and if any of you kinfolk has any information you would share, I would appreciate hearing from from you.

Thanks for your information, Laurie! I can now tell you that I am your 4th cousin, once removed via the Hendershot connection. That's because you are the 4th great-granddaughter of William Scholl Hendershot, who was my 3rd great-grandfather. His first born, George Beavers Hendershot was my g-g-grandfather, while the 2nd born, John Henry Hendershot was your g-g-g-grandfather. I'd love to exchange information with you. Plus I have a Hendershot/Hendershott MyFamily site for Clan C-2 Hendershot's that I would like to invite you to as well. My great-grandfather, James Montgomery Hendershott used 2 t's on his name, as did some of his other relatives.

Bobbi Harrison

I'm trying to find a clue as to what happened to Della. The 1920 census list her as a widow. Her husband Archie is listed as a widow also but in Rock county. She has the 3 girls with her. Archie has the son with him. I'm wondering if she might have been remarried. I know her husband re-married and have the info on him. I have checked vital stat. for a death certificate, they have found nothing. Thanks

Hello all..in case you haven't gotten any further back than Benjamin Jenkin's mom Keziah (maiden name Judson), I think I just found something. In the 1850 census, there is a Keziah "Judgson" (age 20)listed with her parents, Joshua and Deborah (55 and 51), and siblings Orrin 29, Haywood 23, Norman 17, Caroline 16, Jane 12, and Sarah 9. The census was taken in Cayuga County, New York...In the 1878 History of Carroll County, Illinois, it mentions that James Green was married to a Keziah Judson Jenkins, born in Cayuga County in 1830. Judson/Judgson..Census taker misspelling?

The marriage record of the marriage of Jennie Freeman and Henry Clay Kenyon in Brown County, NE says Jennie's parents were Morris [possibly Moores] Freeman and Elizabeth MCHenry.
I have found Moores and Elizabeth Freeman in the 1900 census in Broadwater Montana, Moores as a widower living with his son Clarence in Idaho in 1910. I haven't been able to find Moores and Elizabeth in 1860 or 1880.
I found Moores' death record : in the Idaho Death Index FREEMAN, MOORSE L. POST FALLS 018179 08/27/1838 05/26/1917.
I also found Moores and Elizabeth in 1870 in McLean Co. IL.
Jennie's cemetery and death record say she was born in IL.
I haven't found any proof that Moores and Elizabeth Freeman are the Freemans who are Jennie's parents but they are the only ones I have been able to find with the names and I would like to make the connection.
I would like any information anyone has.

His mother was Bridget RILEY (aka Bedelia, Fidelia, Delia, Deliliah, Adelia, Odelia)
John was born in Iowa maybe in 1871,depending on which census record for his parents you read.. In 1900 he was still living at home with is parents and was in the census as 21 yrs old,if this is correct he would have been about 40 yrs old in 1919.Other than this I have no other information so anything is greatly appreciated
Thank you,
Cris in California

I've been getting e-mails every day, so I'm wondering if there is an old e-mail in my account listed.

Try that again, and we can correspond directly.
GIBSON, Hugh/ Hazel of Ainsworth

I am researching the Gibson family line and am stuck. Any help no matter how small would be appreciated. I believe the following to be true:

Lura Hazel (Metcalf) Gibson b. 8/15/1893 or 1894 of Holly Springs, Woodbury, IA - d. 8/ 1982 in Ainsworth, Brown, NE. She was married (date ? location?) to Hugh Gibson (b. 3/23/1884 - d. 1/1968). They had my grandmother Shirley (Gibson) Nelson on 12/31/1913 and another son, Don (date ? - I know he was younger by 10 or so years). Don married Dorothy and ran the theater in Springview (date ?). He was stationed in France during WWII (date ?) and was listed as MIA for a time. Hugh was adopted and grew up with a man named "Uncle Dick" of Wyoming. He spent time as a judge as well as a teacher (locations unknown). If there is any information available out there to help me fill in the blanks or add a couple new ones, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks tons. I am anxiously awaiting replies. :)

Clarence had one daugher from a previous marriage, Grace. I don't think Grace ever married. Clarence had a brother, Carl, who had two daughters, Sue and Faye. I was named after Sue.

Charlie Sherman, I think a brother of Mabel had one son, but I can't remeber his name.

There was a Ray Conrad who had sons, Ray and Carl. Ray married Gloria Ketchum, and Carl never married. Carl is an anethsilogist in the Phoenix area unless he retired. There was a Romona., I think who was a daughter of the elder Ray.

There was a Noel Brinckerhoff who was married to Pearl Coen.

The Susie Hendershot I am looking for was in Valley Armstrong, PA in a 1930 census she was 11 at that time. It lists Elizabeth Hendershot as head of household. Also lists two sisters Ada and Verda. All were from West Virginia prior to coming to PA.
She later met up with a George Beers ( not sure if they married) but had a child ( my father ) Frank O Beers in 1934.
In the farmers gazette for 1890 Brown Co., I find James Coonen and H.H. Coonen. I believe that their Mother, Anna, is living with James, and that H.H.Coonen is married to Ella Coonen all of Long Pine. I also think Howard and Ella divorce at some point. I know that Howard and Ella have a daughter Marie Coonen and a granddaughter Evengeline Coonen. I think Anna Coonen dies there on 23 Feb. 1902. I would like any information on any of these people. Thank you for your help!

Fitzsimmons

As noted in the Postal History of Brown County, dated 11-14-1919, it lists Contractor Fitzsimmons, who carries daily mail between this point and Springview, has been a busy citizen since the storm Tuesday. Yesterday he had a force of 20 men attemting to break the road from Ainsworth. They reached a point less than 2 miles from town. The Springview mail outgoing reached Meadville Tuesday, and the road is open from Springview to the river. Mr. Fitzsimmons left here Thursday morning with two four-horse teams, the Springview mail and about 20 men and expected to reach the river by night. Word was received here Wednesday night that men were engaged in breaking the roadway at intermediate points, and it is now believed that the worst is over from the snow blocking standpoint.

Also another note in the old newspaper noted in the Post Office Book is:
J. H. Fitzsimmons has been awarded the contract for carrying the mail bewteen Springview and Ainsworth. He will assume his duties the 1st of September,1918. He has purchased an Overland Auto Truck and will use this on the route.

Hope this helps add to your family history.
Doris- Brown County Administrator

Hello,

I did find an Ada Hendershot born roughly 1920 don't know exact bith date. She would be the younger sister of my grandmother Susie Hendershot.

I found them located together in a 1930 census from Armstrong County, Valley, PA. Listed is Elizabeth Hendershot head of house hold. Verda M, Susie, and Ada.

I recenlt was contaced by a woman who responded to a posting I had about the Hendershot name. She was affiliated with a cemetery and was trying to find out how people were related in the Simpson Methodist Cemetery in Kittanning Twp., PA. both Susie and Elizabeth are buried there.

She also informed me that Elizabeth Hendershot's maiden name was listed as Webb. Of course I ran with this and researched like mad because that last name was what I needed. I found a 1920 cencus from Grant County, Ritchie, West Virginia listing Elizabeth A. Webb married an Otis Pierce Hendershot ( funny cause my dads middle name is Otis ) and had the following daughters ( no boys ) Letha, Sadie ( funny again because my Aunt is named Sadie ) Hazel, Ethel, and Susie. I have a theory as to why Ada was not listed. If Ada was born in 1920 Elizabeth may have been pregnant with Ada at the time the census was taken. I do not know why they whent to PA though. I don't show the other girls listed they very well could have married and stayed in WV. The research goes on.

I am not posotive that this is the Ada you speak of but I will do more research and keep you in mind when I get with an Aunt to help me verify my information. Now that I have a possible husbands name this will help me determine.

Thanks for contacting me and I will keep you updated. Take
care:)

I am searching for a long lost gt.gt.uncle - Sibbie Eddie Edwards (aka S.E.) born October 29, 1856, in Beaver Dam, Dodge, Wisconsin - the last of 8 siblings to be found. He was listed in a biographical sketch in 1912 of a brother as being in the hotel business in Ainsworth. I found him listed in the 1910 census as Edward Edwards in Brown County, Smith Precinct as a farmer. Then in 1920 in Buffalo County, Nebraska, also as Edward and a farmer. But then he disappeared for the 1930 census, but is listed as a survivor in a brother's obit in 1929 as Ed Edwards living in Dodge Co., Wisconsin.

Jean Mangrum
He was married to Ada Hendershot who I have as being born on Sept. 12, 1872 and death Sept. 29, 1956 in Dickinson, ND. Roland and Ada were the parents of Frank Atwood Eyer who was my grandfather who died in 1976 in Glendive MT and he was married to Lucille Robinson born in Minneapolis 1900 and died Glendive. They were the parents of my dad William John Eyer who died in 1992. I have lots of info on the Eyer's but I am looking for info on Ada and Lucille Robinson. Thanks.

I am trying to research a possible family connection to a Jacob J. Frame. I believe he was associated with my 2nd Great-Grandfather, George Weber who had a store and a bank in Johnstown. George was from Lincoln, originally emigrating to Ohio from Switzerland in 1854. Anyway, I have an original US Land Office document which records the payment in full and the title of 160 acres of land to Jacob J. Frame in 1888. I believe, but I am not sure that this land eventually became Weber family property. This land is located in sections 13 and 14, T30N, R24W, putting it just northwest of Johnstown.

I would love to hear from anyone with information on Jacob Frame. Thank you,
Jon Kaminsky

Your ancestor was George A. Lake. We are related, George A. Lake was brother to my great grandmother, Emma Lake Bostwick. I am in contact with Cindy and we have been doing a lot of research.
Cindy and I believe that George W. Lake was an uncle.
Mary Ann <cematapey@aol.com>
