He married Hazel E Williams in 1916 and moved to Butte in 1918, where he was one of the owners of the Dickerson and Raymer Hardware Store, now Honke’s Hardware. He helped run this business for 30 years, retiring in 1947. During this time he served several times as Chairman of the Town Board, as Fire Chief, as a bank director and at other community tasks where his services were needed. A town project during one of his terms in office was the paving of the main street of Butte, which he supervised.
After retiring from the hardware business he was elected as Boyd County Commissioner, and served on this board for a period of 12 years. In 1963 he was honored by the local Masonic Lodge and other Boyd and Holt County lodge members when he received his 50 year pin for membership in the organization.
The Dickersons have 3 children; Dr William J Dickerson of Omaha, Selma (Mrs Lloyd Sinclair) of Butte; and Mary Lou (Mrs William Merrick) of Boseman, Montana. There are 10 grandsons and 1 granddaughter.

Staples, Alfred page 61 and 62
Alfred and Elizabeth Staples came from their native London to the US by sailing vessel in 1874. With them was their 12 year old son, John. From NY they came west to Chicago, where they lived for some years. They then continued toward the west, settling in Armour, SD, where Alfred was engaged in farming. In 1890 he moved to Boyd County and settled on a farm sw of Butte along the Niobrara River, where he lived until his retirement. Mr and Mrs Staples spent their last years in Butte, where Alfred passed away in 1911 and his wife in 1912.
The Alfred Staples only living son, John, married Mary Ann Piggott in 1887. She was born in Tuddingham,England in 1865, and had also come to NY by sailing vessel in the company of her two brothers. While they were at sea a storm blew the vessel far off course, so that the crossing required three weeks time. Mary Ann also lived in Chicago for a time, then came west to Armour, SD, with the relatives with whom she had made her home in Chicago. After her marriage to John Staples she came to Boyd Co with her husband and his parents in 1890. They came in the very early spring, so that they could cross the Missouri on the ice while it was still solid. A second load had to be brought immediately from Armour while the ice was still in good condition, so there was only time to prepare a dug out to shelter the family, now consisting of two children and Mrs Staples’s 15 year old brother. John went back across the Missouri for the second load, and during his absence a blizzard blew up suddenly, completely burying the dub out and the family for a time. Later, while living in Holt County, Mrs Staples carried the mail by horse and buggy from Badger to Dustin and Grand Rapids.
The crop failures of 1892 to 1894 caused the family to move to Missouri for a short while, but they returned in three years’ time and resumed farming in the Butte area. For a few years they lived in Butte while Mr Staples served as marshall, but they returned to the farm until their retirement, when the moved to Butte permanently. Mrs Staples passed away in 1938 and Mr Staples in 1943.
9 children were born to the John Staples family; Blanche Story, Elizabeth Clute,Maude Cansler, Alfred “Bud”, Marie Pfeffer, Bernice Reinheimer, John “Jack”. There are 29 grandchildren and 75 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Alfred (Bud) Staples married Mary Willard, dau of Whitney Willard, an early settler in this area. This couple farmed and ranched in the Butte area for many years. They had five children; Alfred who married Dorothy Fundus and now lives in Medical Lake, Washington; Mary Alice Hendricks of Ft Collins, Colorado; Don who married Opal Rockford and lives in Spokane, Washington; Wilbur who married Jean Crawford and lives in Newport, Washington; and Nina who is now Mrs Bob Reiser of Butte. There are 20 grandchildren. Some years after Mrs Staples death in 1948, Mr Staples married Ethel Morrison of Medical Lake, Wash. He passed away in 1964.

John (Jack) Staples page 62
John Staples married Florence Primus, and has lived in Butte for many years. Five children were born to the couple, namely; Jacqueline Clausen and Mary Eisenhower of Bloomfield, Nebr. Cecil married Judy Crain and lives in Blunt, SD; Jerry and Milo at home and Chester, deceased. There are now three grandchildren.

Not found in the above book
One of the oldest and best known practitioners of the northwest is found in the person of Doctor James S. Stockwell, of Butte, who, while well along in years, is still as young in heart, mind and body as many who are his junior by a score of years.
James S. Stockwell was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, September 3, 1834, and is a son of Ephraim and Margaret (Streeter) Stockwell, who moved to Licking county, Ohio, about 1837, and after a short time in that vicinity went to La Grange county, Indiana. James' early education was obtained through attendance at the country schools in these various places. At an early age he learned the carpenter trade, and supported himself, while studying for a higher profession. He early evinced a liking for medicine, and determined to fit himself for that work, so began his studies in Kendallville, Indiana, and in 1859, removed to Sturgis, St. Joseph county, Michigan, where he could have better advantages. Having finally saved enough money to commence his college career, he went to Ann Arbor, and entered the medical department. He was married and his wife also took up a course of study.
After completing his studies and receiving his diploma, he located in South Bend, Indiana, where he established an office and practiced for ten years, then gave up his work there to go farther west. In 1883, he settled in Parkston, South Dakota, remaining for five years, and then removed to Phoenix, Holt county, Nebraska. In the spring of 1890, he filed on a homestead situated three miles southeast of Butte, and after residing on the land for two years, purchased a house in Butte, removed his family to town, and has since that time made it his home.
During the course of his practice in different locations, Doctor Stockwell has encountered many severe storms on the plains, etc., the worst probably being the blizzard of January 12, 1888. He had a call to a sick bed eight miles from town and was on his way home when the storm overtook him. For two hours he battled with the blinding, frozen blast, and became confused as to direction, so was finally forced to give his team their heads, they going to the house of a settler who gave him shelter for the night. On other occasion he had experiences with prairie fires which might have resulted seriously. When in South Dakota at one time his escape from one was effected only by speedily starting a back fire and driving out the flames, thus giving him a chance to get his team into the burned space.
Doctor Stockwell has enjoyed a wide practice throughout Holt, Boyd and other counties in Nebraska, as well as in Gregory county, South Dakota, and while younger physicians have entered the field with diplomas of a much later date, the old doctor holds his own against all competition. He is a typical pupil of the old school, kindly and sympathetic, in whom his patients have the utmost confidence, and for whom they have an affection that is almost that of a beloved blood kin.
Doctor Stockwell was first married at Kendallville, Indiana, in 1856, to Miss Sarah Fowler, a native of Michigan. Two children blessed this union: Adelbert, now in business at South Bend, Indiana, and Lillian, an artist of flattering attainments, at present making her home with her brother in South Bend. Doctor Stockwell's wife died in 1884.
June 29, 1888, our subject was married the second time, in Holt county, to Miss Amelia Damero, a native of Wisconsin. Her family came to Nebraska, settling in Holt county, and are well known old timers in that vicinity. Dr. and Mrs. Stockwell have three children: Ver, Lynn, now attending Butte high school; and Mabel.
Doctor Stockwell is a democrat, and has always evinced a deep interest in party affairs. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Butte.
