Hello Diane,
"this is my dad's uncle" - I was researching in 2004 on behalf of my wife's cousin "LW", who is descended through Otto's brother Arthur. After locating US Census entries for various of the family surnames he gave me (WIELAND, VONSEGGERN, WESTERHOLD, BADE/BODE, WHITE), and a Germans-to-America entry for "Otto WIELAND, 1880", I stopped since most Pommerian/East Prussia records are in Poland, and require a paid researcher to proceed further in State Archives. (I am not conversant in German either.)

What I discovered in 2004: Otto WIELAND, father of Otto and Arthur and several others, was from Germany (possibly Gerswalde in Pommerania or East Prussia) and emigrated as an "unmarried laborer" on the vessel S/S WIELAND through Kiel on Oct. 12th, 1880 (as uncovered by someone in "State Archive Hamburg, passenger lists, departures" through posting on another Ancestry mailing list).
I also found many US Census entries 1900-1920 (and one 1930) which I have summarized, and can send to you (if you had not already discovered the same through your Ancestry subscription).

What have you uncovered, or know from family stories? I had not found any information regarding Otto's other descendants in 2004, and nothing is compiled into FTM or other software (mostly LS's paper groupsheets).

"i maybe can find it in the newspapers in west point library they have them on a micro film"
THANKS, I would appreciate it but there is no hurry. You must live in NEBRASKA (I recognize "West Point"), possibly in Cuming or Boone or Dodge counties.

"maybe someone has helped you out already"
NO, you are the first and only one to answer this 2004 posting. (I also posted in Cuming country list for Otto, and also PRUSSIA-ROOTS and Pommern mailing list.)
----

Again, thanks for replying to my posting. I will forward your recent reply to him. If LW is interested, maybe you and he can exchange info directly? (I can act as intermediary for the Obituary, but I am not actively researching his family at this time.)

(When I first posted, I did not have to register to post or reply through Ancestry's boards. So my first was listed as "Anonymous". Now I am "FindOtto".)

Lets take this discussion off-list, Diane.
find_otto@yahoo.com (subject should be OTTO WIELAND)
(I registered this email address, but do not subscribe to Ancestry.)

"if i understand right your wife was related on the weiland side i must go talk to you soon"
My wife's mother and "LW"'s mother were sisters, making my wife and "LW" first cousins. "LW"'s grandfather was Arthur, brother of OTTO.

I saw some of your interchange with Mel Brozek.
(I can tell you a little more off-list, but want to get "LW"'s permission before revealing his full name or email address to you. He is not actively researching at this time, and like many people checks personal email sporadically.)

Are there any WIELAND or EBEL reunions held in NE?
(My wife has attended her mother's surname as well as both of her father's mother's surnames, all held in NE as recently as 2 summers ago. They were German or Swiss immigrants, so produced several generations of off-spring scattered throughout the US, few remaining in NE however.)
