Looking for the date of death for this man, and also would like to know where he is buried. He was born 18 September 1831 in Quebec, and died after 1910, probably in Poplar. He was married to Rosalind Matt/Matta, and I would like to know where she died also. Montana? South Dakota? Thanks for any information!

This is one tough family to find after 1880!

1880 U.S. Federal Census; Montana; Lower Yellowstone and Sweet Grass; Gallatin County; Roll #: T9_742; Family History Film #: 125472; Page: 201D; Enumeration District: 14; Image: 0410. This enumeration was conducted on the 15th and 16th of June, 1880

SIRE, Louis; head of household; white; male; 48 years of age; stonecutter; born in Canada; both parents born in Canada.
SIRE, R. Matta; wife; white; female; 35 years of age; keeping house; born in Colorado; both parents born in Colorado.
SIRE, Delpha; daughter; white; female; 13 years of age; born in Oregon.
SIRE, Louis; son; white; male; 9 years of age; born in Oregon.
SIRE, Clover; daughter; white; female; 8 years of age; born in Oregon.
SIRE, Henry; son; white; male; 6 years of age; born in Oregon.
SIRE, Sophie; daughter; white; female; 2 years of age; born in Oregon.
SIRE, Francis; son; white; male; 8 months of age (Oct/1879); born in Montana.

I searched for these children with the various surname spellings in all U.S. states, but could not find them in the 1920 or 1930 census indexes. I also was unable to find any of their names in the available state death indexes.

Check out the resources available in Sweet Grass,Yellowstone and Gallatin Counties:

And of course, Valley County:

Good luck!

Surnames: Sears (Siers)
Hi Diane,

How are you related to Louis Sears? (Luis Siers)

My great grandfather on my mother's side was William Sears (Siers) who was the 2nd child born to Louis Sears & Roselin (Rosa) Apice - as we have her listed. She passed away in Oregon. E-mail me and I will give you what information I have.
I met a Bob Sterub over the internet who's grandfather was Henry Sears, brother to William, so he is my mother's first cousin, although they never met.

He says Henry Sears lived in Elbowoods North Dakota and was married to an "Addie", Hidasta Indian

Surnames: Cyr Sire Sirre
There were 3 original men named Sire who came to Canada.

Pierre Sirre: found in Nova Scotia in 1671

Louis Sire: records find him originally in hospital in Montreal in 1691, then in Nova Scotia, then in the census of Prince Edward Island then finally back in Bellechasse Quebec after the Acadian expulsion in 1755,

Andre Sire: 1668 who came to Quebec via labour contract who himself spelled his name Le Syre

You will have an easier time tracking the people from these 3 lines if you use the version of the name the Catholic church gave to them all:

which is Cyr

Nearly every Sirre, Sire os Syre was called Cyr by the 1800's.

(no one named Siers or Sears ever came to Canada before 1700: Sears is the evolution of the name only in the New Brunswick group during the late 1800's)

To track these people search under Cyr.
