Anson Shimer 1885-1920?

Penny,
I found an "Anson Shimer" living in Everett, Snohomish Co., WA. in the 1920 Federal Census. The census says he was living with a William M. Shimer(father)and Rebecca(mother). The dates match up. They were farming. Could this be your Anson? Would like to correspond with you. Also have a question about another child of William and Rebecca.

Sincerely,

John Rentch
Annapolis, MD.

The obituary was correct. The Shelby Cemetery was also known as the Sunset Memorial Gardens:

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=132:3:2524425942...

If this link fails:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html
Click on "Search Domestic Names"
Enter Montana, then Toole County, and Feature class of "Cemetery."

A typo is a tipo, entering the wrong information is entering the wrong information. Speculation that information is wrong, without proof, is not genealogy research.

Hi again.
I was just on Facebook checking to see if Reno SanSaver had an account there and through a few clicks came back to this Ancestry thread.
I re-read everything, including my post. I hope I didn't sound snippy about Robert SanSaver being secretive and all about his heritage. I understand how that could come to be as a result of the vile mistreatment that the US and Canada has done to First Nations Tribes and Bands since the 1600s when the Whites first came to North America. But...it has been like pulling teeth to get Bob to talk about his family and Indian-ness. LOL
It has been a source of frustration for his 6 kids since I have known them. You said that you had a family tree if anyone was interested. I think the SanSaver kids would definitely be interested, particularly Roxy and Robyn, since they are the two oldest of the siblings.
He did used to answer some of MY nosy questions. Perhaps it's easier to talk to someone outside the family. He always seemed to like me for some reason. I got a kick outta him never using my name..he'd just always call me That Girl. Heehee
Although I haven't seen any of the SanSaver Clan for too many years, I do still keep in touch with Roxy and Robyn, and a few others, via Facebook and phone calls. In fact, I talked to Roxy today as it's her birthday! And a Happy Fourth to you as well.
:) Renee Roberta Nash

Hi, I am a cousin of your father's. Your grandmother, Flora Mare Hamilton Sansaver and my mother, June Ilene Hamilton Jelvik were sisters. My mom is still alive but has dementia and her memory is not very good. I did listen alot to what everyone said but never heard anything bout Jack sr. side of the family except there was a falling out with his side before he married Aunt Flo. I would love to receive your lineage as it would save me a ton of work and maybe I can fill in some blanks. I think I actually met you around the time Richard came home from the Navy and before he passed away.

Some corrections and additions to previous. Enumerated on December 31, 1865, the ages are what the person would be in 1866:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...
There is a Jens Peders(en), age 38 (NOT the one found in the US). His son Peder Jens(en) would have been born in 1860, (shown as 1861 in the above 1900 Census).

Here are Bronken in the 1910 Census:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/sok/1910?fornavn=&am...=
Per and Gustava are still alive.
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036410000...

As written yesterday:
"Here is the emigration record for Einar Peders (Pedersen) Bronken (Mansetha), (scroll down to the bottom listing), born 12 July 1886 in Vaaler (Våler), Solør. He was enroute to Boston on the ship "Oslo", departing on 11 May 1907.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

The 1920 Census of Stavanger, Traill County, North Dakota
Eienar (as written and transcribed, when someone transcribes the census, it helps the person searching to know how the name was written). Immigrated 1907(matches the above)/Naturalized in 1914. He was a farmer, but was renting his residence, which may or may not have been a farm. He is listed between two families of "Weigel," so he "might" have been working for them. There is a "Haugen" family on the same sheet, enumerated above him. Nora Haugen is in Reynolds, living with father: Axel. B; and mother: Maren, both immigrants of Norway.

Here is the Oslo record for 11 May 1907:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_route.asp?ro=W56
The Oslo, part of the Wilson Line of Hull, was a feeder ship for "transmigration."
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/transmigration.html
Here is her history and photos:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=osloa
She sailed the route of Kristiania (Oslo) to Kristiansand, to Hull, England, departing every Saturday Morning. At Hull, passengers would then take transportation to the major port of Liverpool, etc, for the voyage to the new world. These routes included New York (Ellis Island or its predessor of Castle Garden), Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore. Einar was identified with a voyage to Boston; however, many of the original manifests in Norway show a destination but they are found arriving elsewhere. A large percentage of emigrants traveled to Quebec, Canada, then into the midwest. Once he arrived at Hull, then at the seaport, he "might" have changed destination by choice or suggestion of the company.

------Jens-------
I took some time and did go back to check on Jens Bronken:

Here is the birth of Jens Pedersen Bronken:
Permanent pagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6047&i...
Permanent imagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070112620518....
He also was the son of Peder Jensen Bronken and Gustava Olsdatter.

-------Per Bronken-----
His emigration in 1929 (Scroll down to the bottom listing):
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

--------Mathilde--------
emigrated in 1910 (Scroll down):
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

--------Ellida------------
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
I do not find who she is...
I see you are new to posting on the Rootsweb Message system, at least under this user name. You'll have better luck in obtaining information if you can provide some detailed critical information. This includes the full date of birth of the person you seek (you did provide the year which was very helpful). I did not find a family tree that you had created, or any other having substantial information. For this posting, you were asking for information about his siblings and parents. Be specific on what information you already have, otherwise a volunteer might provide what you already have.

Einar P. Bronken, born 12 July 1886 (12.07.1886) died 20 September 1965 (20.09.1965). He married Nora Haugen, born 24.01.1893, died 05.10.1935(5 October). She was daughter of Axel B. Haugen, born 1859 in Grue, Solar, Norway, and Maren N. Sjorbotten (Botten), born 18.09.1861 in Hoff, Solør, Norway. Einar and Nora married on (01 or 20) Dec 1920.

Solør is a region name, most of which is in the Fylke (similar to, but different than our Counties) of Hedmark: The full area of the region of Solør stretches from the city of Kongsvinger (which in 1964 was amalgamated with the neighboring municipalities to its north and east, Brandval and Vinger), northwards along the river Glomma through the municipalities Grue, Åsnes (which comprises its former neighboring municipality to the south, Hof) and Våler, which borders on Elverum (which is the beginning of the Østerdalen region. Consequently, you will need to search the parish records of the following parishes: Vinger, Brandval, Grue, Hof, Åsnes and Våler. My own family came from the Kongsvinger area; so ultimately we are probably related.

The name of Bronken is not necessarily a surname as we would know it. It could be a farm name. The Scandinavians used a naming system known as Patronymics. A male child was born and received a given name ("Lars"), he would receive a patronymic name of the first name of his father, followed by "Sen" (son) such as in the case of a son of Magnus, he would be "Lars Magnussen." Because of the MANY having that name, he was given a third name, his address, or most likely his farm name, such as "Stenbakken." So this child was "Lars Magnussen Stenbakken." If he moved to the Stenbraaten (Stenbråten) farm, he became Lars Magnussen Stenbraaten. A female child, Lena, would be Lena Magnusdatter, and would be the rest of her life, followed by the name of the farm upon which she lived...even if she was married. This naming system was in effect in Norway until shortly after 1900. It had ceased earlier in Sweden, Denmark. "Sen" was also "Son" in some areas.

The gard/farm name was used by EVERY FAMILY living on that farm area, even if they were NOT related.

Note the vowel of ø in Solør. The Norwegian alphabet has additional vowels to our English, the ø, æ, å (Ø, Æ, Å).

Here is the birth record of Einar Bronken:
This is the parish records for Elverum Parish, Hedmark Fylke (County).
Permanent pagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6047&i...
Permanent imagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070112620572....
He is listed as #83, son of Peder Jensen Bronken and Gustava Eriksdatter, born on the Bronken Farm, Peder was born 1860, Gustava, 1856. The other names are sponsors at the birth/baptism. NOTE: Gina Eriksdatter.

Here is the inhabitants on the Bronken farm in the Norwegian Census of 1900:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...
This is the family of Peder Jensen Bronken, and his wife Gustava Eriksdtr (Eriksdatter); and their children.
---Einar is not included in this family. I did some review and found the below person, an Einar Pedersen (matches patronymic name for his father), born 1886 in Elverum, living as son of the sister. The wife in this farm is Gina Eriksdatter. This "appears" to be the correct person. He was living at that time on the Magnæshaugen farm.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...

Here is the emigration record for Einar Peders (Pedersen) Bronken (Mansetha), (scroll down to the bottom listing), born 12 July 1886 in Vaaler (Våler), Solør. He was enroute to Boston on the ship "Oslo", departing on 11 May 1907.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Here is the birth of Gustav:
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6047&i...
Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070112620581....
He is listed as #110, same parents.

The emigration of Gustav Peders. Bronken, born 1882 in Elverum
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...

The 1910 Census of Reynolds, Traill County, ND
Jens Bronken, age 28, born in Norway immigrated 1873 (OBVIOUSLY a mistake if he was 28, he would have been born in 1881/1882). He "could" have immigrated in 1893 (a possibility in that the ink "might" have so indicated).

This Jens Bronken could be an immediate member of this family. Or, he may have just lived on the Bronken family at some time. I did no further research on this person. I will not "Guess" as to his being related as did the other person until I do some verification.

---------------------Einar's land in Montana---------------
In 1915:
The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
issued under the Homestead Act (and other Congressional Land Acts):
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/AH-Homestead.html

It shows Einar Bronken obtained 320 acres of land under the Homestead Act on 6/25/1915. It was located at Township 33 North, Range 1 West, Section 23, the South half of the Section. A Section contains 640 acres, if divided into quarters: 160 acres per quarter, 40 acres per quarter section. A section was one square mile in size. Gustav Bronken also obtained land on this data in this area.

This land can be plotted onto a topographic map on TerraServer. It is not working tonight, otherwise I would show you a topomap of this area where the land was located. I will try again later.

Obtaining the application for the land patent:
There is a great deal of information to be obtained from obtaining a copy of his application for this land. All foreign born citizens were required to provide proof of naturalization; thus, a copy of his documents may be within the records.

Here is an example of what "might" be found in a land patent application package. This example is for the Charles Ingalls property (Little House on the Prarie).
http://www.archives.gov/research/land/ingalls/index.html

To obtain a copy of the land patent records issued under the Homestead Act:
First, find your ancestor's land patent information: (I provided above)

By Mail:
Click on http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-84.pdf and download the NATF Form 84. The BLM Land Patent site will have the needed information for the form.

3. By online method: Click on the above link and follow the instructions to submit your order online. Again, use the BLM site data to complete.
---The form also indicates, "If available, please attach one cpy of the original land patent, tract book pages, or Bureau of Land Management GLO listing for this land entry." You could copy the original land patent image from the online site above, as well as the window link I've included above. But, if you attach pages, you would probably have to mail your application.

When the research staff has located your documents, you will be contacted with the information about how many actual pages were found and the cost for reproduction.
-------------------------------------------------------

His obituary: Based on what you wrote, it does not appear his obituary would be found in Toole County.

I back this up with his grave information:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=br...;
He died 9/20/1965, and is buried at the Americus-Saint Olaf Cemetery, Reynolds, Grand Forks County, ND.
--The cemetery also shows records for Nora 24.01.1893, died 05 October 1935; Agnes marie Jan/1928 to Jan 1928; and Gladys Bronken Erickson, 22 Sep 1911 to 8 Jan 2009.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Thank you Judy. Yes, that is my FindaGrave memorial. I knew his wife & parents were buried there, but his name was not on the cemetery index. When a FindaGrave volunteer took photos for me, she let me know that his grave was also there.
Thanks for the Toole connections; I had called the library & was told they would do searches for me for a fee, but that information was not available on-line. The city clerk very kindly looked through the cemetery index & gave me info to request photos. Lots of helpful folks around!
Mary

Hi,
I don't think Einar's parents came to the USA. I found two other Bronken males who could be his brothers or cousins.

Name: Einer Bronken
Residence June 5, 1917: Dunkirk, Toole, Montana
Born: Norway, 12 July 1886
Occupation: general farmer
Marital Status: single
Source: world War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918.

In 1920 Einer lived in Stavanger, Traill, North Dakota by himself.

In 1930 he and his family were living in Reynolds, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Einar Bronken, b. Norway, 44.
Nora, wife, 37.
Margaret E., 6.
Evelyn B. Johnson, 14.

Do you have a copy of Einar's obituary? That might contain more clues.

In 1910 a Jens Bronken was living in Reynolds, Traill, ND.
Mrs. Mattie Bye, head household, 51.
Ida Bakke, servant, 38.
Thomas Sonstemd, boarder.
Jens Bronker, boarder, b. Norway, 48, imm 1902, naturalized, grain buyer elevator.
Inger, wife, b. Norway, 44, imm 1910, nat.
Carl W. Erikson, roomer.

Name: Gustave Bronken
REsidence: June 5, 1917: Toole Co., MT
Born: Norway, 9 Oct 1887
Citizenship: Naturalized
Occupation: farmer
Nearest Relative: wife.
Source: World War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-18.

In 1930 Gustave and family were living in Fairview, Toole, MT.
Gustve Bronken, b. I am not sure who she was married to first. She was born in May 1880 in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada and died on 19 June 1930 in Toole Co., Montana. She had 4 children: Exina, Walter George, John W. and Elmer "Eli" Victor Lazure. I think she might have been married to John Lazure first. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Just happened upon this obituary. Ovedia was the daughter of Peder Olson and Julia Sagvold, sister to the three men previously identified: Adolph, Edwin and Alvin. She has living children...COUSINS! I'm sending this directly also with additional information.

Saturday 09th of October 2010
Ovedia H.Rishoff, 98
Ovedia H. Rishoff died at her residence on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, the same date as her marriage 82 years ago. She was 98 years old. Ovedia was born July 20, 1912, on the family homestead north of Lothair, one of four children to Julia Sagvold and Peder Olson. She received her education at nearby country schools. She married Cyrus J. Cy Rishoff on Oct. 6, 1928, in Chester. They lived in Chester, Lothair and Galata before settling in Shelby. Cy worked for the county road department and Ovedia worked at the local nursing home, school lunch room and as a baby-sitter. She was also a homemaker and mother of three. They retired in 1970. In 1988 they moved to Bigfork where they enjoyed tending the cherry orchards on their property at Woods Bay. They were married 79 and a half years when Cy passed away at age 102, in 2008. Ovedia continued to live at home in Bigfork, where she received loving care from her family. Ovedia was active at St. Luke s Lutheran Church in Shelby and Bethany Lutheran Church in Bigfork, the R.N.A. in Shelby, the Army Mothers of Shelby, and the Beardance Club on the east shore of Flathead Lake. She enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, crocheting, quilting, gardening, baking, crafts and cards. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Orville; and three brothers, Adolph, Edwin and Alvin Olson. Ovedia is survived by a daughter, Betty Fjeld, of Kalispell; a son, Jack Rishoff, of Bigfork; eight grandchildren, Susan LeBouef of Newport Beach, Calif., David Rishoff of Etiwanda, Calif., Laney Paine of Newport Beach, Debbie Sparks of Albany, Ore., Kim Hickman of Neptune, N.J., Mick Renna of Bigfork, Donna Benner of Kalispell, and Ed Renna of Meridian, Idaho; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Luke s Lutheran Church in Shelby. Following burial at the Shelby Mountainview Cemetery, a coffee hour will be held at the church. Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester. There will be viewing at the mortuary on Sunday and at the church on Monday two hours prior to service.
I am pleased my research appears to be the correct family. Once I was "satisfied" the Mathias Olson appeared to be the correct brother, the rest was relatively easy to track. BUT, I do not like to speculate on accuracy without sufficient facts known by the family members. Some researchers can only guess facts by a subscription to Ancestry.com, and if they had read the original person's post, some of the "findings" can be quickly eliminated.

So, with this confirmation. I began to look for your unnamed G-Grandfather. I started first with looking for ANY Olsen born in the right parish in 1870, having the parents as identified for his brothers in the previous posting. I believe your G-Grandfather was Ole Christian Olsen, born 13 September 1870. He is #173:
Permanent pagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8965&i...
Permanent imagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070205630180....
If you have problems viewing these, let me know. On the Permanent pagelink, in the first box at the top, change to 150%. In the imagelink, once it opens, click anywhere in the center to fully open it.
-As you can see his parents were the same as the others.

I did find an Ole Olsen with "potential," in the 1900 Norwegian Census, but additional information found (below) eliminated him.

The Norwegian Emigrants from Oslo shows an Ole Kr.(Kristian) Olsen, age 21. The age of this Ole would match that of the above Ole born Sep 1870, his home was listed as in ø. Toten, departing on June 3, 1892, to New York. He is traveling with an Anton Olsen, age 18
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Going back to my previous post on Anton: The 1930 Census shows an Anton Olson, born about 1874, immigrated in 1892. SSDI records identify his birth as 12 April 1874. Below proves this Anton was the son of Ole Iversen and Olene Olsdatter:
Permanent pagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8965&i...
Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070205630236....

So, I'm pretty convinced your G-Grandfather Ole sailed to the USA with brother Anton in June 1892.

The 1930 Census has an Ole C. Olson, married to Clara J., living in Prescott, Renville Co, ND. He is of about the right age, no year of immigration. The 1920 Census shows his year of immigration as 1892, as does the 1910 Census. The 1910 shows he was married about 5 years. So, I suspect this is the correct Ole ?

Thanks for the fun!

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

As can be seen below, I did a number of searches, but results hinges upon your KNOWN information to either verify some or eliminate all. This info is specifically your g-grandfathers name/DOB, his wife's name, or other data so he can be found in the US and Norwegian Census. Norway has usable census data of 1865 and 1900. Also any additional information on names of his siblings.

Finding the correct Peter isn't just looking for him, you have to have specific information not just on him, but his siblings. To find him, enough information about his siblings can identify enough information about HIM to find HIM. Identifying your g-grandfather enough to verify HIS family, can then identify enough on Peter for a boni fide search. I have tried to do that with the limited information. I believe the Peter Olson found below has potential; but your information could immediately toss it away.

Montana Death Index/Social Security Death Index:
Mathias Olson, born about 1885, died 2 Dec 1964 in Roosevelt Co, MT. SSDI shows birth on 30 August 1885.

A family tree owned by a "dcgenie15" identified Mathias as born 3 August 1883 in Tooten (Tosten), Norway, died Dec 1964 in Wolf Point. He married on 19 Dec 1914 to Hilda Amanda Grondahl in Glenburn, Renville Co, ND. By 1930 Census, he was living at Fort Peck Reservation, Roosevelt Co, MT. Parents and deceased children were identified by name, father being an Ole Iverson, mother "Syrina." This information does not have totally accuracy based on other findings.

Now, an introduction to Patryonmics, the naming system in effect in Norway when they were born. When a man named Ole Iversen (SEN was more prevalent in Norway, although many Angelicanized/Americanized the name when they came to America) had a son "Peder/Peder/etc," the son became Peder Olesen/Olessen/etc. to indicate the son of Ole. Because so many had the same names, they added their address (usually the farm name) as a "surname." Example, if Peter Olsen was living on the Sletbraten farm, his name would be Peter Olsen Sletbraten. If he moved to the Sletbakken farm, he became Peter Olsen Sletbakken. A daughter, when born, as example would be Inga Olsdatter, and would be so named the rest of her life, even during marriage. So your Peter, could have been Olsen while living in Montana...OR, he could have retained his farm name as his last name, many immigrants did. As in the case of his wife, Hilda Grondahl, Grondahl was a farm name.

Back to Mathias:
The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database:
Mathias OlsEn(was using the SEN), born Aug 3, 1885, living at Wolf Point, Sheridan Co, MT, nearest relative "Hiddle" (Hilda) Olsen. He was an Alien, Declarant (meaning he had filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen. He identified Canada as his citizenship. He registered on Sept 12, 1918, as required for his age.

The 1920 Census for District 187, School District 45, Roosevelt Co.
"Math" OlsEn, age 34, born in Norway, immigrated 1913, "Pa" meaning he had filed papers, Declaration of Intention, to become a citizen. Farmer/General Farm, owned his land.
Hilda, 25, "X" for immigration year identified as "Al" meaning Alien, although she was born in North Dakota to both parents born in Norway. When an American Citizen female marries an alien, she became an alien also. When he obtained citizenship, she would also again become a citizen.
Three children living at home, Olive 4 6/12; August M, 2 7/12, Helen M, 8/12.
--So, immigration in 1913 would indicate Mathias was living in Norway during the 1900 Norwegian Census.
----Living next enumerated was Casper M. Grondahl, age 28, with wife Dara, 23. Casper was born in ND to both parents born in Norway, probably the brother of Hilda.
--No additional "Ols*" were found on the page.

The 1930 Census shows Mathias (transcribed as Matthas) in Roosevelt County, with his family. His immigration date is again listed as 1913. He is now naturalized.
--The only "problem" is his World War I indication of being a citizen of Canada. During the late 1800's/early 1900's, emigration from Norway to the new world involved transmigration. First, "most," would travel from Norwegian ports to Hull, England. Then take a carriage, train, to a transatlantic seaport such as Liverpool. A good percentage of those traveling to the Mid-West, Minnesota/North Dakota/etc, would travel to Quebec, Canada, then take transportation to the US. A good many did stay in Canada. So, the 1913 date may be the emigration from Canada, versus Norway.

Anton. You indicated he died in Deering, ND, in 1964. Deering is McHenry Co.
The 1930 Census for ND, only has one Anton in McHenry Co, but living in Grilley. This person was married to Anna, immigrated 1892, born about 1874. The SSDI shows an Anton Olson, born 12 April 1874, died Feb 1964 in ND.
--I need further information on this person to identify if this is or is not the correct person.
--If this is the correct person, he would have been about 26 in 1900, and if he did emigrate from Norway in 1892, he would not be on the 1900 Norwegian census.

Now the Norwegian Census of 1900. I did find a "potential" family. This "Matias" was son of Ole Iversen, born 1842 and Oleane Olsdtr, born 1846. This family had a Natalia, born 1890, and a Peder, born 1880. They lived on the Hopop farm in the parish of Vestre Totens in the Fylke (similar to our County, but different) of Oppland. This is a different area than identified in the family tree above, but the owner of that tree also had the wrong date of birth for Mathias.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...
Now, what was your g-grandfather's name? If he had been born in 1870, he was probably not living in the household in 1900. If he had not yet emigrated by 1900, he too could be found.

Additional confirmation this might be the correct Mathias is the parish birth records:
Permanent sidelenke:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6112&i...
Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070117310428....
The first is the permanent link to the parish records of this page, the other is the permanent ink to just the image.
This Mathias, was born showing August 9, 1885, while the records of the US Mathias shows August 3. A potential error of some type. The parents of this Mathias is as identified in the 1900 Census.

SO, if this IS the correct family, then Peter was born about 1880.
Here is his birth record, image link only:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070117310388....
--He is listed #23, born 28 January 1880.

Potential emigration for Mathias:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
This one was age 17, from V. Totens, enroute to Boston, via the Montebello (a transmigration vessel to Hull, England).

The 1930 Census for Trommer School District, Liberty County, Montana
(Liberty County is just east of Galata in Toole County. Trommer is a historical location [historic Post Office and School] near Chester, MT).
Peter Olson, age 50, born in Norway, immigrated 1901, naturalized, farmer
Julia, age 40, born in Norway, imm 1890.
Adolph O, 20, born in North Dakota (meets the ND potential residence criteria)
Edwin P, 14, born in MT
Alvin H, 9, MT
--The 1920 Census finds Adolph Oliver 9 9/12, Ovedia(?) H, daughter, 7; and Edwin P, 4 4/12. Based on enumeration date of 5/6 January, Adolph born about March/April 1910; Edwin about July/August 1915.
--The 1910 Census finds a Peter Olson, age 30, hired hand, immigrated 1902 living in Baldwin, Barnes County, ND. The 1910 census had an Anton Olson, born about 1876 in Norway, living in Valley City, Barnes Co, wife was Raquel, he also emigrated in 1902 from Norway.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land obtained through the Homestead Act http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Logon/Logon_Form.asp
It shows a Peter Olson obtaining 320 acres of land in Liberty County on 11/17/1916. Under te Legal Land description, it shows the land was located in Township 31-North, Range 5-East, Section 34, the East half of the Section. A section is about one square mile and contains 640 acres.
---Going to: http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html
Input those land descriptors and submit. You'll see a number of different locations and data, the closest being Arnst Coulee Mouth at 861 meters. Once you've looked over this data, click on "Switch to Terra Server."
---In the next window, click on the largest blue box for Size, then on Topo Map. In the next window, you'll see the topo map broken into red colored squares, these are Sections. Near the bottom, you'll see "Landing Strip" in one square just left of one identified in red as "36". Now, in the square to the left of the one holding "Landing Strip" left click within that square. Then, left click within it again. You'll now see a red colored 34 in that square. This Peter Olson owned the east (Left) half of that square. You can zoom out to see the land is southwest of Chester.

The Social Security Death Index:
Adolph O. Olson, born 12 Mar 1910, died 24 April 1990. His SSN was issued in Montana in 1956. His SSN was 516-44-2656. If verification of his father can be made you could obtain Adolph's application for his SSN. It would show the names of his parents and where he was when he applied. Montana Death Index shows he died in Cascade County, his residence was in Liberty County.
--Adolph, born in ND, enlisted into the Army on 16 May 1942 in Missoula, Montana. He was from Liberty County.

Montana Death Index:
Edwin Olson, born about 1916, died 16 July 1971 in Toole County. He was a widower. TOTAL speculation on my part, Peter could have been living with Edwin or in Galata due to Edwin living there/or vice versa.
--(Both Montana and SSDI) Alvin Olson, born June 18, 1920, died 21 Oct 1978, "last benefit" to Chester, Liberty County, MT. Marital Status: Divorced.

I would suggest contact with the Liberty County Recorder in regard to Adolph. Since he died in 1990, there might have been a recorded document, deed, will, Power-of-Attorney, that might identify family members. It might help to identify where within the county he was living. The current Clerk/Recorder is Rhonda S. Pimley, 406-759-5365, email: clerk@co.liberty.mt.gov Toole County: 226 1st Street S, Shelby, MT 59474, phone 406-424-8300.

Galata is a very small town, even today. IF Peter did die there, someone would have had to pay for an obituary. If there isn't a local newspaper, any family member/friend may not have wanted to pay for an obit for a distant newspaper. Obits for someone only living in an area for a short period of time, or in a small town where anyone knowing the person would have known of the death, were not published. Death records for the period 1940's to 1960's are incomplete, especially for small towns, small states. (Even Washington State, for several years in the 1960's the Washington Death Index shows only a few people dying in some of those years).
--Cemetery records are mostly not transcribed...in all states. Those that are have missed graves, stones broken or unreadible or no records. Findagrave.com only shows two Peter Olson in the entire state. Tombstone Transcription Project shows no transcriptions in either Toole or Liberty, same with Interment.net. There are no volunteers in the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for either county. So, your best bet is posting to both counties of your information KNOWN.

Now then, I'll let this research rest until you can provide confirmation/elimination information about your KNOWN data on the entire family of your G-Grandfather.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi Ann,
The Montana State Genealogical Society's web site has a virus and they're working on fixing the problem. They don't know how long it will be down because of the holiday timing and they're an all volunteer organization.

You can contact the Lewis & Clark County Genealogical Society, rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtlcgs/ . They share the same genealogy library with the MSGS. They also do research. Successful Searching & Merry Christmas!

Hi Judy,

I don't really have much information on him other than a listing in my great grandfather's (his brother) obit saying he lived in Galata, MT. My great grandfather was born in 1870 and another brother was born in 1885, so I figure Peter would have been born sometime in that time frame - I know, a big range of time. I don't know if he was married or not.

His father's name was Ole Iverson. The brothers and sisters listed are Mathias of Wolf Point (died 1964), Peter of Galata, Anton of Deering, ND (died 1964), Anna Haugen of Portland, OR, Clara Cleveland of Duluth, MN, and a sister Natallia in Norway and also another sister in Norway.

I doubt that he lived in Canada but don't really know. My guess is he came to MT from North Dakota since that is where two of the brothers lived.

I received obits for a couple of Peter Olsons. One of them lived in Kalispell and died 2/20/1973. I doubt this is him since it said he was born in Sweden, not Norway.

Another obit for Pete Olson born 1/31/1889 in Norway and died 2/8/1978 in Flathead Co mentions two sisters in California, so this is not my guy either.

Got some info from a Roosevelt County history book for Peter J Olson who died 05/11/1978 in Roosevelt Co and he is not the guy I'm looking for.

I did find another Peter O Olson who died 01/23/1965 in Deer Lodge County. I haven't found an obit for him.

I beleive I've eliminiated three of the Peter Olsons so that might help. I haven't found anything for a Peter Olson in Toole county.

If you can help, or have any ideas, I would appreciate it, but if you can't, that is fine.

Thank you for the reply.

Brian

Hi Brian,
There are just tooo many Peter Olson's in the Montana Death Index. I can't be sure with this info that I've found yours.

Unfortunately Toole County doesn't have a Genealogy Society which sometimes has County Directories. You can contact the Toole county Library, 406-424-8345 and ask them if they have directories for those timeframes.

Did he live in Canada and enter the U.S. from Canada? When did he enter the USA?

What were your great Grandfather's and his brother's names? When and where were they born?

Was he married?

If you can provide me any of the above information, I might be able to find him.

I'm trying to find any information on my great grandfather's brother, Peter Olson. The only information I have on him is he was born in Norway, somewhere in the 1870 - 1885 timeframe. In my g grandfather's obituary (1946) and another brother's (1964), both obituaries say there was a surviving brother living in Galata. So far I can't seem to find anything on him and am hoping someone will be able to help me out with info from a county history book or an obituary.

Thank you.

Brian Backes
Menoken, ND

My Grandfather is Jack Sansaver. And his son, Jack Sansaver, is my father. Growing up I was told that we were chippewa cree, but through further research it seems that we were more associated with the Fort Peck reservation. Wolf Point and poplar montana are areas that the sansaver's have a strong presence in. I knew that my grandfather had a lot of siblings, but Gordon Sansaver is the only name that I recall. Gordon has affiliation with a tribe in Montana, but I am not sure of which one. This post says that Robert might be his brother? Just the same, I always heard growing up that my great grandmother (Jack Sansaver's Mother) refused to talk about the tribe. That is why they are stingy and secretive with the details. I actually have a family tree if anyone is interested.

I have a friend with the last name Sansaver. Her full name is Roxlyn Rae Sansaver.

Her father is Robert. I think he was born in the early- to mid-1930s. He has a brother named Jack, and they both live in Washington state. They are Native American, but I really don't know what tribal affiliation they have. I do know that her father has relation in Montana, Minnesota, and the Dakotas.

Robert was a bull rider and did other rodeo stuff in his early youth, was in the Navy, and both brothers became utility linemen in the '60s. In fact, there seems to be a whole Sansaver lineworker dynasty in Snohomish County, to this day...including my friend and her younger sister, Reno.

I think I was told, at some point, that the family name used to be Sainte Savier or San Savier...sounds French-Canadian to me. Her younger brother, Shannon, started spelling his name SanSaver, at some point.

I shall have to pick her brain to find out more info. I'm sure that she'd find it all very interesting! Her father is very stingy and secretive with details of his family history, so anything that might be pertenent would be genuinely appreciated by her and her siblings.

I hope that some of this helps you. :)

I am visiting Toole County, MT this summer. I would like info, if possible, on the following:
1. Does the Toole County Library have any Genealogy information?
2. Would someone have a list of the cemeteries near Galata?
3. Could anyone do an obituary look up for Sarah Elizabeth (Knight)PLATZ, b. 1855 Ohio, died: 5 Feb. 1916?

Thank you. pechu@charter.net
