I found these death announcements for John C. Lowney and his daughter Esther Lowney. Also John's wife Bridget's funeral announcement.

Date: March 21, 1922
Location: Montana
Paper: Anaconda Standard
Page 5

UNION ORGANIZER DEAD AT DENVER

John C. Lowney Succumbs After Short Illness. Official of Western Federation

John C. Lowney, for may years one of the most active members of the old Butte Miners’ union and a leader in the activities of the Western Federation of Miners, died in Denver yesterday, according to word received by relatives in Butte. Death was caused by pneumonia, contracted in Denver. Mr. Lowney left Butte two weeks ago.

During the 20 years he spent in Butte, Mr. Lowney took a foremost place in labor affairs. He was regarded highly both by employers, union officials and fellow workers. Despite the fact that his activities in Butte Union circles practically came to an end with the disruption of the miners’ union, he still maintained an active interest in union affairs and worked as an organizer for the Western Federation during recent years.

The body was shipped to Butte for burial. Charles Moyer of the Western Federation will accompany it from Denver. At Cheyenne, Wyo., Dan Holland, an old time friend, will meet Mr. Moyer and come with the body to Butte.

Mr. Lowney was born in Ireland 53 years ago. He came to America in 1896, and to Butte 20 years ago. He made his home here and is survived by two daughters, the Misses Rose and Mary Lowney, both of Butte. His wife died a year ago.

Date: November 17, 1917
Location: Montana
Paper: Anaconda Standard
Page 7

ESTHER LOWNEY DIES

Death claimed Miss Esther Lowney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Lowney, 450 North Idaho street, yesterday, after a long illness. She is survived by her parents and two sisters, Rosie and Mary.

Date: November 20, 1917
Location: Montana
Paper: Anaconda Standard
Page 7

LOWNEY- The funeral of Ester, the beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Lowney, will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at the family home, 450 North Idaho street, at 9:30, proceeding to St. Patrick’s church, where mass will be celebrated at 10 o’clock.

Date: March 09, 1921
Location: Montana
Paper: Anaconda Standard
page 11

LOWNEY- At the family residence, 450 North Idaho street, yesterday, Bridget, beloved wife of John C. Lowney and mother of Mary and Rose Lowney of this city. Mrs. Lowney was born in Ireland and resided in Butte for the past 29 years. Funeral notice will appear later.

Date: March 11, 1921
Location: Montana
Paper: Anaconda Standard
page 11

LOWNEY- The funeral of the late Bridget Lowney will take place at the family residence, 450 North Idaho street, this morning at 9:30, proceeding to St. Patrick’s church, where high mass will be celebrated at 10 o’clock. Interment in the Catholic cemetery.

I am not related. I volunteer to help others locate information on their ancestors.
Eellitta

Well Sue, I will most definitely keep an eye out, though I have to say looking for an individual with Irish names like Sheehan, McNulty or Kearney in Butte, Montana is like looking for a needle in a haystack. There’s a reason they call us they call us the sixth province of Ireland, ha, ha.

For example, head to rootsweb.com, plug in the last name Whalen and perform a search. Check the Cemetery listings and you will ding literally DOZENS of Whalens buried in various Butte, Montana (listed as Silver Bow County) in various cemeteries. If you can fins any that look familiar, let me know.

On a lighter and more optimistic note, there is a good chance that there might still be living family here. I had a teacher and went to school with a kid with the last name Whalen.

Best of luck! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

According to the Cemetery Listing records on Rootsweb.com, Giovanna “VanHuss” was born Jun 4th, 1956, died June 7th, 1954 and is buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Butte, MT. There is also listed a Joseph Gerard “VanHuss” who died on October 8th, 1956 (no birth date listed). Not sure if this helps, but I thought I would mention it.

If you get in contact with the cemetery records offices and get their plot numbers, I would be far more than happy to visit the cemetery with my digital camera, take a look and send you photos of any stones that might or might not be there.
I did NOT use the Death Index for Montana that is listed at ancestry.com.I used the one listed either at rootsweb.com or the Montana site of usgenweb.com when I looked up the info on Giovanna L. Van Huss as far as her date of death goes.
Wasn't there a CD produced with the necessary info listed on it for the date in question-?? I could have sworn there was one listed at that particular section of the MSGS site.
The specifc page I looked at was entitled "Montana State Genealogical Society,Montana State Death Registry Index,Pre-1954 and 1954-2002.
Only her DOD is listed in Silver Bow County and not her age,DOB or cemetery burial site.I personally have a subscription to some of the newspaper research sites, but so far have saw nothing about her death on it let alone her brothers which occurred in a different part of the state a couple of years later. It's also possible that the specific newspaper I need isn't available for that time frame and area yet.

Ancestry.com's Montana Death Index for the years 1954 to about 1965, are incorrect except for name and date of death. You can check another index, which is correct, that will show Giovanna L. Van Huss died in Silver Bow County (County #: 47, city of Butte), and not Deer Lodge County (County #: 12, city of Anaconda).

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtmsgs/death_records.htm

The reason Ancestry's data for that time period is incorrect is that the state changed the way it numerically coded deaths after 1954, and the state's computer in use at the time was unable to accurately read the old codes. Ancestry has been made aware of the inaccuracy of their records, but has made no effort to make corrections to their database.

To obtain a copy of Giovanna's Death Certificate (which should give her parents' names, including her mother's maiden surname, and other genealogical data, contact the Clerk & Recorder of Silver Bow County. The cost is about $3.00. You can obtain a copy of Giovanna's obituary by contacting the Butte Public Library. Go to the following link for those addresses:

http://silverbow.mtgenweb.org/page1-enter.htm

Just address your request to the Clerk & Recorder, as the listed clerk, Mary McMahon, is no longer in office.

Good luck!
Newspaper Article Bridge on West Park Street

November 11, 1930.
PIONEEDS AGREE ABOUT EXISTENCE OF BRIDGE ON WEST PARK STREET
Butte has grown up. The city is now so ancient that the disputes are cropping up over early-day landmarks. Chris Jorgensen rites the Standard from Warm Springs that the last time he was in Butte lie was contradicted by other pioneers when he remarked that “In, the young days of Butte there was a bridge, fully 201) feet long, somewhere between Walker’s place and Symon’s store.”
Mr. Jergensen says: “They declared that no bridge ever existed on that street, although I crossed it many times when Butte depended on Deer Lodge for Its produce. The bridge was erected about 1875 and stood many years.” He asks for corroboration of his statement.
Mrs. Joseph Sinsel, of 621 Colorado Street, who came to Butte in 1884, remembers the bridge referred to by Mr. Jergensen. She locates the structure In the vicinity of the McKinley Savage optician establishment of today,
The late Joe Hoar, well-known miner, who lived In Butte from his boyhood, was fond of relating that on Sunday afternoons It was his custom, In summer to “lie under the bridge, among the bushes and read stories that might not have been approved of in a Christian home of that day as Sunday literature—”Murderous Mike.” “The Mad Man of the Mountains,” “Two-Gun Kate” and the like.”
“Other old-timers bear similar testimony. The preponderance of the evidence is on the side of Mr. Jergensen, members of the Butte Pioneers’ club state.
Obit: McMILLAN, John A., 83 -- Dies: 20 Oct 1951 in Butte, MT

I was able to obtain the following obit from the "Newspaper Archives," a paid database. This database is far from complete, and I was unable to find an obit for his wife, Elizabeth McMillan.

From the "Billings Gazette," published at Billings, Montana on Monday, October 22, 1951, page 3:

RETIRED RAILWAY AGENT SUCCUMBS
Butte, Oct 21.--(AP)--John A. McMillan, 83, retired local freight and passenger agent for the Northern Pacific railroad and a resident of Butte for the last 65 years, died Sunday night after a lingering illness.

McMillan retired from the Northern Pacific in 1938 after serving as agent for 36 years. At the time of his retirement he was the oldest employee of the Northern Pacific in Montana in point of service.

He was born in Lancester, Ontario, and came to Butte in 1886.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth McMillan, whom he married in Butte in 1894; a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gregor McMillan of Helena; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Raff of Butte and Mrs. Harriet Head of Monte Vista, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Katherine McGregor of Butte, and nieces and nephews in Butte, Missoula and Idaho.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Butte.
----------
You cannot find these McMillan's in the Social Security Index because SS did not begin to computerize their records until sometime after 1962, and therefore although there are SS records for John and Elizabeth, they cannot be found online.

If you go to the Rootsweb Social Security Death Index, you can find instructions for obtain an SS-5 form with which you can obtain a copy of John and Elizabeth's original applications for Social Security (probably about 1937 or later). These forms are somewhat expensive, but do provide a lot of information.

Ancestry.com's death index is VERY inaccurate for the years 1956 through about 1964. The only accurate information is the name and date of death. Apparently, the state changed its numeric codes for its death certificates, and the computer system currently in place cannot read the older codes accurately. Although the accurate information is available, Ancestry has not bothered to update their records. To get accurate Montana Death Index information, use the Montana State Genealogical Society's index:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtmsgs/death_records.htm

MONTANA DEATH INDEX:

RAFF, Margaret
Died: 24 May 1957
County of Death: #12 -- Deer Lodge County, MT
Index #: 152

McMILLAN, Elizabeth
Died: 14 Feb 1957
County of Death: #25 -- Lewis & Clark County, MT
Index #: 23

To obtain copies of Death Certificates, you can contact the Clerk & Recorder of the county of death. These certificates only cost $3.00, and they provide a lot of good genealogical information.

I hope you have found the above information useful. I am not related

Hi Justin
Wow - Thank you so much for your reply and all the well informed info in it!
I will ring Holy Cross next week and try to suss some things out on the phone - snail mail will take forever !
I am very grateful for your offer of local knowledge. What I am trying to do is find some living rellies from whom I may be able to get some stories of my husbands family or maybe if I am really lucky - some photos - I find that photos really bring the past to life ! To that aim, I am working my way through the 20th century to get as close to present as possible.
I will have to have a good look at my tree, but in general the names are as follows:
Crilly - Francis, Thomas, Patrick, Mary
Hayes - Anastasia or Alice, Cornelius, Mary who married a Middleton, Frank, Patricia who married Patrick Courtland Barney, Barbara who married Ed Pettigrew, Kathy.
Sheehans
Whalens (The Whalen Dairy)
Sloans
Kearney
McNulty
Barney Burns
W J Burns

To name just a few !!! The Crilly's, Whalens, Sheehans, Burns/Byrne, Sloans, Kearney all originate from England and Ireland in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Some of the Crilly's Kalamazoo Michigan, and Whatcom Washington.

I am really grateful for your interest and help
Thank you
Sue
Glad I could help, Sue!

I am indeed local and if you’d like to run some names past me, I would be more than happy to take a look at some of the sources I’ve come across searching my own Butte roots.

It just snowed today and everything is buried in snow, but if you can track down plot numbers for to any of these graves, I would be more than happy to trek out with my digital camera and see if there are any tombstones and e-mail you some pictures.

I’m well acquainted with Holy Cross Cemetery and it’s plot numbers are very well marked in the cemetery and I have a plot map of Mt. Moriah and Mt. Moriah Cemeteries, but to find anyone in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, we’ll have to get some sort of direction or general gist because it is simply too big to do a walkthrough and there are too many either absent or illegible stones.

As for figuring out exactly where they are (and if there are any other Crillys or related family around), I would highly suggest first writing/calling (probably writing since you’re in England, ha, ha) Holy Cross Cemetery. I have been told that they keep records in their offices for not only Holy Cross Cemetery but also to St. Patrick’s Cemetery as they are both strictly Catholic cemeteries (the latter is considerably older but has no on-site offices).

Here’s their contact info:
4700 Harrison Ave
Butte, MT 59701-7001
(406) 494-3812

That should get you started in the right direction.

Let me know what other names you’ve got in Butte and I will see what I can dig up.

Best wishes,
Justin James
To determine IF this is the William Ralph Swindell you are seeking, it might be advisable for you to obtain a copy of Mr. Swindell's Death Certificate from the Silver Bow County Clerk & Recorder's office.

These documents cost about $3.00 plus postage, and often give the deceased's birthplace, his parents' names (including mother's maiden surname), etc. This information will be on the certificate only if the informant to the certificate was knowledgeable about his background, or if documents were found in his possession.

Go to the following link for Death Certificate information:

http://silverbow.mtgenweb.org/sbhowto2.htm

I hope you find the above information useful.

I checked my 1952 and 1957 Butte City Directories (Polk), and did not find anyone with the surname of Swindell.

The reason the McMillan's are not found in the SSDI is because these records didn't start to become computerized until about 1962 and later.

Upon reviewing the death indexes from Ancestry.com and from the Montana State Genealogical Society, I found:

McMILLAN, John A.
Died: 21 Oct 1951 at 83 years of age (birth year abt. 1868)
Index #: SB 8268 ("SB" indicates Silver Bow County)

McMILLAN, Elizabeth A.
Died: 14 Feb 1957
County of Death: Lewis & Clark County (per MSGS)
County of Death & Residence: Silver Bow County (per Ancestry.com).

It is to be noted that Ancestry's death records for the period of 1954 to about 1962-63 are inaccurate due to a change in the way these records were coded--a new computer system could not accurately "read" the older coding system.

So, I believe that for whatever reason, Elizabeth McMillan probably died in Lewis & Clark County, and that is where you could obtain a copy of her Death Certificate.

Death Certificates can be obtain from the office of Clerk and Recorder in the county where the death occured. These documents cost about $3.00 plus postage.

To obtain copies of the obits, I suggest you contact the Butte Public Library. Click on the following link and then scroll down to the bottom for the email address of the library.

James R. Thomas & Lucile Jones Thomas were my maternal grandparents. James was born in Milwaukee, WI (1884); Lucile in McIntyre, Iowa (1883). James died 26 Aug 1959 in MT; Lucile died in Butte 8 Oct 1956. Lucile's obituary (Montana Standard) doe not name James R. Thomas as a "survivor" and her Montana death record indicates she was "single or divorced." I wasn't aware they were divorced and seem to find that through any internet means. I know they were still married in 1953 as our family lived with them in Butte until then. Since Lucile died in Oct 1956, if they divorced, I guess it would have to have occurred between 1953 and 1956. Is there anyone in Butte who can access that info? Thank you so much.

I think the first person will also be notified of this message so she should get it all right. Jan

Searching for: Mrs. JOHN CARMACK and/or OPAL M. GILMORE and/or MAXINE GILMORE from Baxter Springs, Kansas and/or HARRY EDWARD SWINDELL (b.abt 1926) and/or JOE WESLEY SWINDELL (b.abt1928-29) were born in Picher or Miami Ottawa County(?), Oklahoma.
Maxine Gilmore (b.abt1908) from Baxter Springs, Kansas and William Ralph Swindell (b.1897-GA) married on March 22, 1926 in Gerard, Kansas. They lived in and around Picher and Miami, Oklahoma while her husband William Ralph Swindell was working in Mining Operations in the areas around Joplin, Missouri with their children. They were divorced (“abandonment”) in 1929-30 in Ottawa, County, Oklahoma and their children (Harry Edward age 3 years and Joe Wesley age 9 months) custody and care were awarded to Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell. William Ralph Swindell apparently had moved on as he elected not to appear in court and sent a certified letter, dated May 8, 1928 from Burke, Idaho to the courts in Ottawa advising that he waivered his right to appear in court. Maxine and her children were believed to have remained in the Picher or Miami Oklahoma area for at least a short time or she and the children may have moved back to her family’s home in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

Information below from Montana, death index, and newspaper obituary archives show the following that could very well be the same William Ralph Swindell discussed above:

Montana Death Index:
Name: William Swindell
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Gender: Male
Death Date: 15 Dec 1950
Death County: Silver Bow
Index Number: SB 7727 Source:
Montana Office of Vital Statistics

__
12/17/1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
RALPH Swindell
Ralph Swindell. 53. died suddenly
Saturday morning while at work in
a stope on the 3200-foot level of
the Leonard mine. Coroner R. E.
Sayatovic said death apparently was
due to a heart condition, although
an autopsy will be performed.
Mr. Swindell had lived at 257
East Park.
The body Is In Duggan's Merrill
mortuary.

December 22, 1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
WILLIAM R. SWINDELL
The funeral of William Ralph
Swindell was conducted Thursday
afternoon at Duggan's Merrill
mortuary, with the Rev. Dorranee
N. Jensen officiating.
Burial was In the American Legion
plot In Mountain View cemetery,
where officers and members of
Silver Bow post No. 1, American
Legion, held military rites.
The Rev. Mr. Jensen served as
chaplain and Arthur Clark as
bugler. Commander Robert Heckman,
was in charge of -a firing
squad of Hugh Doyle, William Carlson,
Henry Gardner, Jack Wulf and
Pete Johnson. Al Bartle was the
color bearer and Maurice Kiely and
William Hepoia were the color
guards.
Pallbearers were William Hepoln,
Arthur Clark, Henry Gardner, Jack
Wulf, William Carlson and Ervin
Laity.

We are not completely satisfied that the Montana Death Index and Obituaries published in the Montana Newspaper “Montana Standard” in Butte, Montano is the same person as the William Ralph Swindell that was married to Maxine Gilmore and the father of Harry Edward Swindell and Joe Wesley Swindell in Ottawa, Oklahoma in 1926 through 1929-30.

Any help in location any descendants of Maxine Gilmore Swindell, Harry Edward Swindell, Joe Wesley Swindell or any of her family, (parents, grandparents, relatives, etc.) could be very helpful in helping us to locate Maxine Gilmore and William Ralph Swindell’s children and their descendants.

Any help will be appreciated and thanks for reading this posting.
Kim, Hi there. I found this conversation while doing some family tree work. Have you done the DNA thing for uncle Harry? I've had a few people contact me through the Korean War project and as I am not able to supply a accurate sample I have not been able to comply.
Do you have a tree online? I'm slowly working on one. Would love to hear from you guys. Gail
Thank you very much for your time and all the information that you have given me. Somehow I must of put you on the wrong trail of my MUES ancestry. I am trying to get info in Missouri, in the 1800s, which I am finding that there are not a lot of legal paper trails to follow. Missouri will let me copy death certificates online. I was following death certificates to find out the maiden names of the mothers of my relatives. All certificates dont have the same info, but a lot of my certificates dont have the maiden names, I dont know if people didnt remember or what? Thanks again.

Terry

I found this article in newspaper archives:
I am not related,
Cathee

Anaconda Standard
1907-07-02
Mary Crilly got a divorce from
Patrick Crilly. The parties had been
married nine years when the husband
deserted the wife in December, last, and
went to Arizona. Before that,
according to the testimony of
the wife. Her husband had handled
her roughly. At the time he
threw her down an embankment.

He was not drunk, but
only in a bad temper. His treatment
of her made her so nervous she could
not sleep. In consequence she had
fallen off from 115 pounds to 87
pounds. The judge ordered a decree
of divorce to be entered. A. C. Mr.
Daniel was counsel in this case also,
thus winning two cases in one day

Re: Looking for information on Crilly's in Butte

There is a Thomas Crilly listed as buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Butte (born 7 May 1893, died 23 May 1972) as well as a Julia Crilly (1896-1959). Could be your Thomas and maybe a wife? would be worth looking into.
According to the Social Security Death Index, this Thomas Crilly’s SSN is 516-07-6885 and that he lived in Butte, Rocker and Walkerville.
I also found some information on familyearch.org that has the same birth and death dates for a Thomas Crilly buried in Holy Cross. It lists his parents as Francis “Frank” Crilly and Mary (UNKNOWN MAIDEN NAME) Crilly.
It says Mary was born about 1871 in England and that she and frank married in England in about 1891.
As for “Frank,” it also says he was born 24 JUN 1870 in Cleator, Cumberland, England, and died 28 Jun 1911 in Butte. It also says he was buried in “Catholic Cemetery” in Butte 1 Jul 1911. As far as I know, there has only ever been two Catholic cemeteries in Butte. Given the time frame, I would say he is most likely buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery but there is also a chance he could just be an early internment at Holy Cross. I don’t know if you’re local or not so let me know and I would be far more than happy to give you the addresses and numbers to the cemetery record keepers if you’d be interested.

Not sure if this will be any help at all, but I thought I would mention it. I thought I would also mention that there is a chance that Patrick Crilly’s full name could be something like Francis Patrick Crilly or Patrick Francis Crilly it might be beneficial to broaden your searches to include Francis and Frank as well just in case he went by a middle name or something along those lines.

Hope this helps and I will keep my eyes open.
Louisa Geisdorff, Dr Geisdorff's daughter was my grandfather's first wife living in Luther MT. I have several letters with her writing to her brother and sister from the Geisdorff's in California.
