Re: JOHNSON FAMILY

Hi,
I am a granddaughter of Selmer Neal Martin Johnson and we lived on the dairy west of Plentywood while my siblings and I were growing up. Grandpa had Parkinson's and my memories of him were in a wheel chair and being cared for by his wife and my grandmother, Alice Livdahl Johnson. Both of my grandparents are buried in the old Plentywood Cemetery, Harry and Myrtle, Kermit and Roy also.

There is an extensive family history under the Daniel Johnson family name. Selmer and Alice had six children...Kermit, Harry, Myrtle, Roy, Stanley and Alma. Harry and Myrtle died young, but the other lived a full life and Uncle Stanley still is alive and living in Portland Oregon.
I don't think the Daniel and Sarah lived in Plentywood...unless it was to homestead and then went back to Iowa.
I live in Flaxton North Dakota now and a hundres miles to the East of Plentywood. Ironically, grandpa Johnson has lots of family in this area...Lignite, Flaxton, Bowbells. It would be fun to visit with you. jcron@nd.gov or tooti62@yahoo.com.

Thank you very much for the info. Lizzie Marquis was the wife of Victor Marquis (Sr.)and the mother of Harold, Victor Jr., Josephine, Ida.
Lizzie died 26 Dec 1918 at Great Falls (Hospital) and did, in fact die from influeza pneumonia. She was buried at Calvary Cem.
As for birth dates, I have so many conflicting dates. The family notes have her being born in Ste-Claire, Dorchester,Quebec about 1866/7 but I have yet to find the baptism date. As the family came to Maine sometime in 1867 she might have thought she was born in Maine, as by the time she was a teenager, her mother had died.

As far as I know, Victor Sr. was born in St-Basile, NB, Can about 1865 to Jean and Merence(Dumond) Marquis. Victor and Lizzie were married at Old Town, Maine 11 Oct 1885. Dau Josephine was B 16 dec 1886 in Maine, remaining children born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin area; Harold 12 Mar 1900, Ida 18 Jan 1888, Victor Jr. 21 Mar 1899.

I will keep on putting stuff together, sooner or later most of the questions may be answered.
Thanks again,
Ron
The CORRECT link as identified by the other
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtscdgs/

That World War I Draft Registration identified Harold Alfred Marquis as being born March 12, 1900. He registered as required for DOB on 9/12/1918.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents issued under the Homestead Act and other Congressional Land Acts:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
It shows a Victor Marquis obtaining 316.20 acres of land in Sheridan County on 2/13/1918. This land was located in Township 31 North, Range 56 East, Section 15 and 22. This land is located in the Medicine Lake area, so "probably" the father ? The land was about 815 meters from the historical Brenden School, 1377 meters from the historical Bergland School, 2485 meters from the historical Bethel Free lutheran Congregation. It is also about 4896 meters from the Homestead Cemetery. There was a FANTASTIC system to obtain a topographic map of the land area using MSR Maps...BUT, that system shut down May 1st. It was receiving 30-50 thousand usage a day.

---If this person was the father of this Harold, his application for the land patent might give you some additional information on the family.
To obtain a copy of the land patent records issued under the Homestead Act:
--Here is an example of what "might" be found in a land patent application package. This example is for the Charles Ingalls property (Little House on the Prarie).
http://www.archives.gov/research/land/ingalls/index.html

First, find your ancestor's land patent information: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
By Mail:
Click on http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-84.pdf and download the NATF Form 84. The BLM Land Patent site will have the needed information for the form.
The form also indicates, "If available, please attach one cpy of the original land patent, tract book pages, or Bureau of Land Management GLO listing for this land entry." When the research staff has located your documents, you will be contacted with the information about how many actual pages were found and the cost for reproduction.

--
Montana Death Indices:
Mrs Victor Marques (sic), died 26 Dec 1918, age 49 (1868/1869), no location identified, reads: "Contact Office of Vital Statistics, Helena, MT for County."

www.findagrave.com shows a Victor Marques, birth unknown, died 1918, buried in Calvary Cemetery, Gibson Flats, Cascade Co, Montana:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ma...;

A Gabriel Marques, birth unknown, died Nov 28, 1918, buried in the Old Highland Cemetery, Cascade County, MT:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ma...;

There is quite a distance between Sheridan County and Cascade County, but there may be reasons why Harold was there at the time of draft registration. The death of three Marquis in 1918 "could" be a result of the great influenza deaths recorded in 1918/1919.

Here is contact information for the Office of Vital Statistics in Montana...on their form. I'd suggest contacting before ordering any death certificate, they may have more information than is identified on the death indices:
https://dphhs.mt.gov/certificates/deathappfillable.pdf

You could also try the Sheridan County Clerk and Recorder
100 West Laurel Avenue, Plentywood, MT 59254
406-765-2310.

When you post an inquiry, it is very helpful for volunteers to have specific personal information about the persons you seek. In this case, the DOB of Lizzie would help identify her from others. The father of Harold/spouse of Lizzie should be identified so additional information concerning him, his location, etc, might help identify the location of Lizzie. As example, IF he was Victor Marquis/Marques, and he died in 1918, then Lizzie may have remarried. Since you are searching for Lizzie, her information becomes more important to researchers than Harold. Then, what do you know about Harold ? Was he born in Canada? Did he return to Canada? etc. IF you KNOW Lizzie died in Sheridan County, that would also help the researcher.

Madoc was a small town in what is now Daniels County. Scobey, Montana is the county seat. This area was originally part of Valley County, then Sheridan County was split off in 1913, and Daniels County was formed from part of Sheridan County ans other counties in 1920, but after the census was taken.
Madoc is located between Scobey and Flaxville, Montana. There is still a sign there, and some houses. I believe the elevator is now closed. Postoffice, etc has been closed for many years.

You posted in the Sheridan county, Montana, message board. All data points to Sheridan, Wyoming, not in Montana.

I see you are new to genealogy posting, at least under this user name. When you post, it is important to fully identify who you seek, full dates of birth/etc are ALWAYS appreciated. So volunteers don't have to do a lot of initial research to just identify who you are talking about.
If you have a posted family tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25731665/person/1703212153
identify the link. It saves you a lot of 'splaning' and will give a volunteer nough information to actually find who you are talking about.

The Social Security Death Index:
William T. Wilson, born 8 August 1910, died 16 Dec 1993, "last residence" Sheridan, Sheridan, Wyoming. The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where the person lived. It is NOT based on any benefit. It is known only by the "home of record" to the Social Security Administration. I have seen this go back to the original application made for a SSN. His SSN 503-20-2651, was issued in South Dakota before 1951.
--You also show the SSDI as Source.
--Your tree shows two sons and one daughter. It appears you do not know where they are ? If you do, contact them for information.

One other family tree
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11924324/person/1032841582?ss...=
identifies him as William Theodore, death in Sheridan/Source: SSDI; her, as Mary Helen Miller, born 11 Jan 1914 in Belle Fourche, Butte County, South Dakota, death 22 August 2000 in Sheridan/Source: SSDI.
--Since you have an ancestry.com membership, contact this owner, sometimes they have more information than on their tree.
--Also a private tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/RequestTreeAccess.aspx?tid=1288... This person also has five other trees with thousands of names. Usually people with so many names are just tree builders, adding whatever information found without full sourcing...Ancestry World tree, etc, unverified and sometimes wrong information.

The Sheridan Press has online obituaries, but only goes back to January 2001.
http://www.thesheridanpress.com/newobituary.htm

Your best bet would be a volunteer with the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness in Sheridan County. Public Records (library) might find them in City Directories. Public Records (Courthouse) would find property ownership, possible Power-of-Attorney's, Probate records, etc.
READ the guidelines first:
http://www.raogk.org/wyoming.htm

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

1920 U.S. Federal Census; Montana; Cascade County; Great Falls City:

FLORY, Charles W.; head of household; male; white; 41 years old; married; born in Illinois; father born in Pennsylvania; mother born in Indiana; occupation: President of a distributing company.
FLORY, Katrina; wife; female; white; 36 years old,; married; born in Germany (Danish); both parents born in Denmark; immigrated to U.S. in 1883; became naturalized U.S. citizen in 1888; occupation: none listed.
FLORY, Dorothy; daughter; female; white; 9 years old; born in Illinois; father born in Illinois; mother born in Germany (Danish).
FLORY, Ellen May; daughter; female; white; 7 years old; born in Illinois; father born in Illinois; mother born in Germany (Danish).

Apparently you obtained the county of death for Charles W. Flory from Ancestry.com's death index. He did not die in Sheridan County, but died in Lewis & Clark County (county seat of Helena). Ancestry's death index is incorrect for almost all information, except date of death, for the years 1954 through about 1964. The confusion was caused by the fact that the State of Montana changed the numerical coding system it used for death information, and it's new computer system could not read the "old" codes.

As a consequence, the Montana State Historical Society corrected this data, and Charles W. Flory died in Lewis & Clark County. Go to the following website:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtmsgs/death_records.htm

I hope this information helps. You can also contact the Clerk & Recorder of Lewis & Clark County and obtain a copy of Mr. Flory's Death Certificate for $3.00. This document would probably provide you with the information you are seeking:

http://www.co.lewis-clark.mt.us/departments/clerk-and-record...

I hope you find the above information useful.

Hello,

I have come into possession of a manuscript penned by my grandmother, Helen T. Nelson, in which she mentions her husbands ancestry.

A quick post from that manuscript:

"Not too much data is available on Grandpa Nelson’s family( her husbands father) only that they lived in Copenhagen, Denmark, and his mother (my great-great grandmother??) was formerly Jensine Jensen. We are rather uncertain of his father’s first name but the family name was originally spelled Nielson and Grandpa had two brothers of whom we know named Laurits and Niels. There also seemed to be a brother Thurn but of that, too, we are uncertain.

Altho Grandpa was getting on in years ........ Finally, he decided to take some time off and he took a bus trip, all alone, to visit his two brothers Laurits and Niels who were living in Dagmar, Montana. They lived on a huge farm of 320 acres, acquired through a land grant many years before and on this they raised grain. Grandpa made this trip in 1929 and had a fine time visiting his brothers and becoming acquainted with all his nephews and nieces. This branch of the family clung to the original spelling of the family name and were known as Nielson. After Grandma’s return one of the nieces, Elizabeth Nielson, came to N.B.,(New Brunswick, NJ) on a visit on her way back to Copenhagen, Denmark."

Hope this helps you in some way. Please contact me if this is of any interest to you, I too, am looking back into my family's roots.

Thank you, Christopher Nelson

Yes, that is the family in 1910 -- in Wisconsin. So Frederick C. Johnston is his fuller name. And the fact that he is shown as born in Canada clearly conflicts with what he said in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. The 1881 emigration (vs. the 1882 date given by George in 1920) fits with the family history.

The Frederick C. Johnston that you found in the WWI records is not him. John Johnston and Emma Butson were married 1874 in Reach Twp, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada. They are both buried in Chicago, at different cemeteries. The 1881 Canada census shows them with a son Walter (in addition to George) but no other children.

Along with John's half-sister Ellen Gibson Cook (and her family with husband George Cook) and half-brother Christopher Gibson's family, John & Emma brought their family to Chicago in 1881 -- after all of them were recorded in the 1881 Canada census of Pickering Twp. The Cooks and Gibsons are not families that I have yet tracked down, but I do know that they are buried in Chicago as well.

Emma Butson Johnston's single sister Mary Jane Butson eventually moved from Ontario to in or near Leeds, North Dakota, where she died in 1899. Fred is believed to have visited her before she died, but I have not been able to confirm that. That might be what led him to head west later in life.

That is the correct family in Chicago in the 1900 census; I had already located that census record. But that 1910 census in Wisconsin is a surprise. I knew that they had moved around in IL and IN for steam shovel work, and I knew that their daughter Emma eventually owned summer property ion Rhinelander, WI, but it is surprising to see them in the 1910 census in WI.

I guess the Fred JOHNSTON in the World War 1 draft registration is probably not the correct person.

This Frederick Cleveland JOHNSTON is also included in the Canadian Soldiers of World War 1. His mother is listed as Margaret Grace JOHNSTON or Quebec. He was born in Three Rivers, Quebec. He states he served 12 years in the "5th R. Highlanders Montl".

Do you have any more info you can share about John and Emma?

All that I have on him is from the 1920 Chicago census and the 1930 Sheridan County census.

Neither of these give the date or year of birth. In 1920, he shows as age 37 and in 1930 as 47.

In both cases, he shows simply as Fred Johnston.

I have tried to find his birth certificate and to find him in the 1900 and 1910 censuses and the WWI draft registrations and the WWII old men's draft registrations, but so far I have failed to find him in any of those records.

He shows as single in both the 1920 and 1930 census, and there is no story of him ever having been married that I was ever told.

Is there any way you can get a more complete birth date for Fred? And do you know if he had a middle name or initial?
