Hi,

I was able to borrow all three volumes through the public library. I was able to purchase volume 1, but the others are very hard to locate, so I went to my local library. They requested volume 2 and 3 from a library in Montana. Sorry I can't remember which one, but you should be able to locate the books from an online search at the library. Good luck on your search.

My mother was a Raynor and grew up in Montana, Washington and Idaho.

I have volumes 1 and 2. Sorry to report that there were no name index listings either for Strobie (any) or for Lucinda Anderson. I did not find any of the children's names you listed in either volume.

Volume 1 covers from trapper/pioneer days in the early 19th century to approximately the middle of the second decade of the 20th (1915-16). Volume 2 picks up and covers the area through the early- to mid-1920s.

If anyone knows how I can get a copy of Volume 3 I'd really appreciate your guidance. My family didn't get to Heron until the late 1920s. They're very interesting books.

John Francis was involved in politics as well as working for the railroad and several newspapers. Any info would be much appreciated! Becky

I was pleased to come across a distant relative of mine, Martin Banes Shuler, living in Hot Springs, Montana, in 1930. I thought he had perished before 1920 in Tulsa Co., Oklahoma. M.B. Shuler was a blacksmith (owned his own shop) and was a widower, she died many years before. His sons, Evan & Everett (twins), were back in Oklahoma - I'm fairly certain. Does anyone have historical information that might have mention of MB Shuler? i.e. directory, newspaper clippings? I have not found him in the Montana Death Index, though he was listed as being 80 years old in 1930 - he was more like 75-76. Thanks!

There is a tiny community named "Camas Prairie" located in Sanders County, and it has a Camas Prairie Cemetery. I suspect that this is probably the cemetery the obit refers to:

http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/localList.php?local=22345&amp...

According to the book "Names on the Face of Montana: The Story of Montana's Place Names," by Roberta Carkeek Cheney, first published in 1983:

"CAMAS (Sanders County) is near the border of Lake County. An early day post office was established in 1898 with Telesphore Demers as postmaster; it closed in 1957. The town was named for the abundant camas plant, a member of the lily family with an onion-like flavor. The Kootenai and Salish Indians used to come regularly to dig the bulb, which formeda staple of their diet."
"CAMAS PRAIRIE (Sanders County), a few miles out of Camas, is on the Flathead Reservation. The name is descriptive. A post office operated 1910-20; William Boberick was the first postmaster."
----------
I hope you find the above information useful.

Just this June 2008, I visited Plains, MT, and discovered the book "Horse Plains: Montana Territory" 1984, by Maurice Helterline (pronounced 'Morris'). Mr. Helterline has gleaned vintage Plains info from all the local sources. His book is a delightful read. I recommend it! I even found one entry for my family, Courser/Corser, and with his indexes, I found several of my ancestors in the Plains cemetery. We bought the last hard copy (sorry) that the museum had in Thompson Falls.

However, I also saw an updated soft copy version at the Sanders County Courthouse Vital Records Department along with two volumes of indexes. You can order copies by contacting The Printery, P.O. Box 988, Plains, MT 59859, at 1-800-926-4513 or 406-826-3605.
http://www.the-printery.net/index.html

Mr. Helterline's cemetery indexes are also online here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtsander/cemeteries.htm

Maurice is a difficult man to reach. The Missoulian has a charming write-up on him along with his photo here:
http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2005/04/16/hometowns/ht01...

I recommend calling the Printery directly. Hope that helps everyone. Enjoy...

Deb

I am Joe & Lucinda's great granddaughter and was named for Lucinda, but I go by Cindy. I have never heard of one of their children named Margaret, however, Victor's youngest child, Peggy's name is Margaret.
Either Herbert or James died from the flu of 1918 which he caught aboard ship returning from WW!. The other was killed by infection in an accidental gunshot wound that he received when going over a fence. Anna did, in fact, marry Victor H. French & they had 3 chlldren, Anna May, 1916-2005, Jeanne Erville, 1918-2003, & Jim, 1920-1943, I believe. He was killed in the invasion of Sicily in WW2. Stuart was a cousin--originally an Anderson, I don't know if he was legally adopted, but his name was Stobie for most of his life. He & Eva had no children. Victor & Ruth had 4 children, Victo, 1926-present, she was married to Bert VanCampen who died several years ago & she lives in Thompson Falls, MT. I'm not sure of Herb's birthdate, but he is still living, Chris was, I believe, born in 1932 & died 2003 from cancer. Peggy is a few years younger than Chris & lives with her husband, Larry McCarthy in Plains. As I understand it, Herbert & James bought the Cook family ranch, at the foot of Cook Mt. in 1910. It has been in the family since then--that's where Victor raised his family & it is still in his family.

My mother in law, Dorothy Daugherty Ervin was a resident of Noxon and died in Noxon about 1968 (69?). I understood from my husband that she is buried at the Noxon cemetery, but her name is not on the list provided by Shrider's Funeral Home. Can anyone in the area find an obit for her?
Thank you in advance for any help.
annie

Re: Boyer-Lynch Connections

I am sure there are connections somehow, but pinning them down is tough. My grandmother, Marie Nolen, was born in 1899, and I remember her speaking frequently about Cole Beamish. Howver, she went to high school in Thompson Falls, I believe, or maybe even in Washington somewhere.
Her uncles, Joe and Frank Boyer, and her mother, Mary Boyer Nelson Scott, lived in Plains, but I believe it was later than the period you are looking for. Joseph Boyer married Mary Lynch, hence the connection. What made it confusing for me is there were now two Mary Boyers in the same town, and I sometimes can't tell who a story is about. I do know that Joe and Mary Lynch Boyer were quite well thought of, and that Mary Lynch Boyer wrote a great deal of Plains early history. There are two books that I know of, "Horse Plains, Montana Territory," by Maurice Helterline; and also "Wild Horse Plains," by John Rhone. I'm sure that Mary Lynch Boyer's historical accounts are somewhere in Plains still, as they were the basis for the Rhone book.
My mother attended the small one-room school house that was moved from somewhere in the woods to the corner of Main Street in Plains, and stands there today, but I don't know if that was Lynch Creek School. My mother was born in 1922, so again, out of your date range. I definitely remember the Beamish name, though. I just looked through my mother's senior almanac, and found that one of the freshmen was named Neptune Lynch. As this was 1940, later than you need. And darnit, for whatever reason, the editors only applied last names to the seniors. All others are listed as Dorothy D., or Mary M. The only reason I knew this was Neptune Lynch was because he signed his name next to his picture, (as Nep Lynch,) which is the nickname I think all of the Neptunes went by.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I will keep an eye out for the names you are looking for as I research mine.
Thanks for getting in touch.

Boyer-Lynch Connections

Looking for information on any of the Boyers who ran "Boyer House" in Plains in 1800's. My great-great uncle Joseph was married to Mary Lynch, who was one of the best historical recorders of Plains life. Joseph's brother Frank, and their sister Mary, are hard to find info on. Mary Boyer married John Nelson, who died early 1900's, then married Walter Scott. Am trying to find out who the parents of Joseph, Frank and Mary Boyer were, and where they came from. Have differing stories. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just Googled Pelarske and found this post. My grandmother's maiden name was Pelarske, Hedwiga (or Hattie) and her sister's name was Catherine (not sure of any other siblings or if this family could be related or not but Catherine and her husband Joe lived in St Cloud, MN. When Hattie married my Grandfather (who died in 1963 - Charles Schanback)- they lived in Minnesota (I believe) and then Nothern California (Sacramento/San Fransisco Area).

I'm looking for information about a Hiram Baker and his wife Mary Jane Baker who moved to Montana. They were listed in the 1920 census as residing in Fergus, Montana. In the Social Security death index there was a Hiram Baker who died in Plains, Sanders, MT 54859. Any information would be great apprecited, maybe even a obit for Hirman.
