Yes. I learned where he was buried and asked that the contributor transfer the memorial to the correct cemetery. He just transferred the memorial to me and I transferred it to the cemetery in Missoula.

Thanks

Hi,

I checked the cemetery indexes that are online but didn't find him. He died fairly recently and the indexes might not be that current.

An obituary was published for him in the Great Falls Tribune on Oct 31, 2007.

The three funeral homes in Ravalli County, www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtravall/FUNERAL-HOMES.html are listed on this web site. Surely one of them handled his funeral and burial. They might have a copy of his obituary too. Successful Searching!

Hi,

I found your family tree on Ancestry and it's always helpful to mention a tree in your initial posting.

Simon Kughn
Married: Missouri E. Cook
11 July 1867, Rock Island, Illinois
Source: County Courthouse records file 1428580-581, Illinois Marriages 1851-1900.

Another listing shows her name as Mrs. M. E. Cook.

In 1880 Simon is living in Bitter Root Valley, Missoula, MT with the Greenfield family.
Ringlker [how it appears in Census] Simon, 47.
Kughn, Emilene, wife, 41.
Wyman, Ellen, 15.
Wyman, Mary, 7/12ths.

I searched through the Census records in Ancestry and familysearch but didn't find George. If he was alive in 1870, I assume he would have been living with the Russell family in kelly, Warren, IL.

However, I couldn't find Simon, Josephas or Ellen either.
Successful Searching!

From what I have been able to get from doing research on most of the early day pioneers to the Darby area, they seem to have followed or led relatives. Samantha was full sister to Marcellus Ray and his family who came, half sister to Arena Surgener Hart who came with her husband and family who came with his two brothers and their families, and also a number of other people who came from McDonald County, MO. Hannon, Donica, Shelton, Wolfinbarger, Matteson and no doubt others all came but I'm fairly sure they didn't all come at the same time but I'm sure that they all knew each other in fact most were related to each other in Missouri.
If you have any other questions please just email me at
wedarbyfour@hotmail.com....I will more than glad to help how ever I can.
Don't know if I mentioned this but their wedding date was Feb. 28, 1869 in McDonald County, Missouri. Their oldest son Walter was born in Jan 1877, son George Mar 1884 in Benton County AR, Effie born Oct 1886, and Mary "Molly" no date...
Some additional info on Effie....her second husband was Zeke Graves and supposedly she killed him and spent time in jail for it...she was killed when hit by a bus in California. Mary married Albert Adams in 1891 in Missoula County. Their son was Albert Adams jr. who married Frances Satterlee. Albert Jr is on the census as living with the Satterlee's just can't find if its 1910 or 1920, Edwards Township, Ravalli County.

I'm going to type word for word from a Hamilton newspaper which had a small notation of Samantha's death.

Mrs.Samantha Wells died at her home above Darby, June 3 after a lingering illness of cancer of the throat. She leaves a husband and large family to mourn her loss. The funeral was held at the Darby Cemetery on last Wednesday.

It isn't much for an obit but thats all there is. Hope this answers your question. If there is anything more I can help with I'd be happy to.

I have heard from several of my Aunts that we have lots of relatives still in Montana. I have also heard that Effie was on the wild side...to say the least and that someone murdered their husband. You are so amazing. I am going to read and reread your info. on my missing puzzle pieces. I truly cannot thank you enough. This has long frustrated me. I a

Sorry I apparently hit the wrong key with the last post.
Any way at the start of the Civil War Felix moved his family to Texas where Arena, Martha (born & died), and Grundy were born. Upon the death of Felix senior, Elizabeth moved her family back to McDonald County where she married a man whose surname was Armstrong. About 1881 Arena who'd married John F. Hart, Marcelus (Bud) who had married Louise Wilann Holland, Samantha who'd married John Wells, and Grundy who never married, along with some Donica cousins and the entire Hannon family all moved to Darby, Montana. Most of this information comes from family members including some from a lady in Texas who is a decendant of William Surgener son of Felix and his first wife.

Well should teach me to read all the posts before commenting.
I'm going to post all the information I have on Samantha Ray Wells. Sorry but I don't have anything on John. Samantha was born 1852 (taken from obit, died June 3, 1902 in Darby) to William Harrison Ray and Jane Donica Ray. Both were from Cole County, Illinois. Undocumented that Jane died in childbirth because shortly after Wm married Elizabeth Hannon Donica and moved to McDonald County, Missouri I am also unable to determine if Samantha was the birth daughter of Elizabeth or Jane. Also born to this couple were Marcelus 1855, William, and Iva Centilda. Have no idea what Wm Harrison died from but Elizabeth married Felix Richard Surgener in 1860 in McDonald County Missouri. Felix had been married twice before and he had 11 children to bring to this new marriage. Between them it added up to 15 children. Some of Felix's children were grown with the oldest being born in 1826 and the youngest in 1848 so it looks like the household probably contained five or six children but they had four more. Arena born 1863, Martha born 1865, Richard Grundy born unknown (every census he tells it different with different birth place)and Philex born 1861. About the start of the Civil These families all prospered here and raised big families. Some of their decendents are still living in this area.

This is what little I know: Effie was the daughter of John Wells and Samantha Ray Wells. Samantha died here in Darby in 1902. John worked in the apple packing houses until his children were all raised and then he went to California. From what I can glean from the few relatives around here Effie was a bit on the wild side and was married several/bunch of times and went to California. I have no documentation of this but was told she murdered one of her husbands and spent time in jail for it. I also was told she was killed by a bus when she stepped off the curb into its path. No one seems to have any real documentation here in Darby. Wish I could be of more help.

Simon Kughn & family

I am looking for more information on Simon Kughn and his family, who lived in Ravalli County in the early 1900s. I'm descended from Simon's daughter Lydia Caroline Kughn (1862-1936), who married Charles Samuel Robinson.

I have found plenty of information on Simon. He was born in 1833 in Pennsylvania to Michael Kughn and Elizabeth Wallace. He died in 1903 in Ravalli County, Montana. He is buried at Victor Cemetery. In 1865, he married his second wife, Missouri Emiline (maiden name unknown).

According to Lydia Robinson's obituary, her mother died when she was a baby and she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell. In the 1860 census, Simon Kughn's wife is named Lydia (like her daughter). The census says she was born about 1835 in Ohio. So I assume her maiden name was Lydia Russell. If her daughter was a baby when she died, then I suspect she died around 1863.

In addition to the younger Lydia, Simon and Lydia Kughn had 3 children: Cephas Kughn (b. 1854 in Illinois), Ellen Kughn (b. 1856 in Illinois) who married Edmund Wyman, and George Kughn (b. 1859 in Illinois). I haven't been able to find Cephas or George in any other census besides 1860. Ellen was living with her father and stepmother in 1880.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me at tajm@comcast.net

Effie Wells is just a stepping stone, an interesting one, for me to get more info on John Wells and his Wife Samantha Ray.

The paper on Effie going to Canda is a border crossing paper stating she is widowed/divorced and going to Canada for work.

If you could help with John Wells or Samantha Ray, that would be much appreciated. I have all info on them but am looking for their parents' names. John Wells was born in 1847 in Indiana. Married Samantha Ray in Missouri in 1869. Samantha Ray was born 1851 in Illinois, her parents are not Lucy and William Ray. They had a Mary, Walter, George, Effie.

I know Samantha is buried in Lone Pine cemetary in MT, but no date. John Wells moved to CA, with family, and is buried in Inglewood.

I reviewed your family tree on Effie, but it only had the year of her birth and parents info.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/26769845/person/12472763193
Post the link to your tree at the person you seek, this helps fully identify them. I also look at the trees for any names I hold in common. I see you have Cox family. I also had a Dorcas Cox, but not the same person.

I see you've only posted five messages on the Rootsweb boards. When you post, it is very helpful to volunteers to have a good basis on who you seek and what information you have. This prevents you from receiving information you already have. This is important when names are common, such as Frank Williamson.

You mentioned "Papers show her going to Canada." Were these part of the divorce documents? If so, what information was provided. If not, divorce records are maintained (by statute) by the County Superior Court in the County where the divorce case was heard. A divorce is a civil case. Documents would be the initial filing, the Petition for Dissolution. The person filing would be the Petitioner, the other party the Respondent. Sometimes these documents identify the reason for the dissolution. Documents also show where parties were living, children, alimony demanded, child support, etc.

The marriage certificate (14 May 1907) identifies Frank J. Williamson, born in Here County, Nebraska, and was 26 years of age, son of H.C. Williamson and Sarah A. Ackson. Effie was identified as being 19, born in Missoula, MT, dau of John and Susan Wells.

---This Frank is NOT the correct Person-------
--I'm leaving it here for elimination purposes.
The 1900 Census of Stevens, Ravalli County, and 1910 Census of Corvallis, Ravalli County, show a Frank L Williamson, born April 1882 (18) in Montana to father (A.P? Williamson, born Sep 1843 in New Jersey) and mother (Elanora/Eleanor, born April 1844 in Massachusetts). Frank is shown as 27 in the 1910 Census.
--The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database shows: Frank Laroy Williamson, born May 15, 1882, in Stevensville, Ravalli Co, nearest relative Mary J.

The Correct Frank J. Williamson.
Since you have a posted tree, you can access this one at:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14092149/person/54947908?ssrc=
He was born 13 June 1880 in Nebraska, died 25 Nov 1970 in Pierce County, WA (my residency).
--His obit is listed at the Tacoma Library database:
http://search.tpl.lib.wa.us/obits/ published on 25 Nov, page 24 (which might not be accurate if he died the same day). I can advise on how to obtain his obit if needed. Your post does "indicate" you are more interested in Aunt Effie.
He remarried in 1915 to Lillie B. Campbell.
---This tree identifies Effie Wells as being born in 1890 in Ohio. The correct Effie Wells' marriage certificate data showed her as being 19 (1887/1888), born in Montana.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
it shows John Wells obtained 23.91 acres of land on 12/14/1911 in Ravalli County, at Township 3 North, Range 21 West, Section 11, Lot/Trct 8, part of the SW part of the South East Quarter of that Section. This land area could be shown on a topographic map if you were interested. The actual application could also be obtained. These applications show quite a bit of information on the person applying.

Thank you. I had found another 'tree' that gave different death information from Find A Grave information and this tree, also. It gaves her death date as 2001.

There is an indication this lady's maiden name was, also Weins not Hinrishsen, as listed on the marriage license for Francis Weins and Helon. She may have been his first cousin, as their Fathers 'may' have been brothers.

That is normal for this family.
