Thanks for that too.

Ellen

Ellen, first I found the work you are doing in this cemetery on another website... You are doing a great job.

No, Denekamp is not the father.

I sent the daughters phone via the Ancestry message system and should show as a message on the top bar. Otherwise, try www.zabasearch.com , and use "Max" as the first name, Benjamin as the last. (And Ancestry protect's living person's information...?).

Is James Denekamp the daughter's father? James Denekamp is also buried in DeBorgia cemetery as of 1991. If not, what is the father's name? Thank you for clearing this matter up for me.
The person's whose obituary I posted IS the same person whose memorial is found in both Auburn, WA; and the De Borgia Cemetery. I had verified it by speaking to her daughter, so I might as well post all of the information:

Pearl is buried in Auburn, WA. But, prior to death she also wanted to have a memorial in the De Borgia to honor her love as boyfriend/girlfriend with James Denekamp. Her stone is a cenotaph over an empty grave. This information was sent to ecmatz as well as the phone number to Pearl's daughter in the event he wanted to know more. The daughter stated her father is still alive and lives about a quarter mile from the De Borgia cemetery.

She was NOT connected to the Al Strieker.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Judy, you are an angel. You just solved the biggest mystery in my cemetery! We have tried everything to find out anything about Al Strieker, because all we had was a mortuary metal marker with NO other information than his name. Do you have any more about him? Were they married? I have nothing other than the headstone on Pearl, permits are not necessary here (This is rather backwoods Montana). I will attempt to research our local newspaper for 1996 to see what I might learn.

There are 173 names on www.findagrave.com for De Borgia Cemetery, all pictures were added by Denise Crawford. Denise is just a contributor/ reader/ transcriber of cemeteries. I don't know what the connection was believed to Al Strieker, he is just one of th 173 transcribed by Crawford.

The Tacoma News Tribune has a database of obituaries:
http://www.southsoundclassifieds.com/obits/listing.asp?searc...

Pearl Josephine Peterson
Josephine Peterson passed away at Federal Way, April 30, 1996 after a battle with Alzheimers.
Hi,

Did you contact the person who posted Pearl and Al's info on findagrave.com? Maybe you didn't know they are on findagrave.com.

I tried to find info for Pearl but didn't find anything and in Montana it's difficult to get a copy even of a non-certified death certificate.

I saw the pic and there isn't even a grave stone for Al so the person who created the findagrave entry must have a contact for this cemetery. I can't enter her name on here because of RootsWeb rules about living people.

It looks like this cemetery might be abandoned but someone provided permission for burial especially for Pearl who died in 1996. Another approach is to contact funeral homes because they must have buried her there. There is a list at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtminera/grave.htm. Successful Searching!

Hello Laura,

I just came across your posting while trying to find information/photographs of the Gilman family that used to live in Deep Creek, MT. Your photo was really astounding to see. We have lived in Deep Creek for the past 8 years and often wonder about the folks who lived here before us. Although the home in your picture no longer stands, we often find pieces of their lives, (an axle from an old wagon, the front part of an old tricycle, toys, pottery and glass pieces, leather boot soles, to name but a few things). The meadow today looks pretty different in some ways, but in other ways, pretty similar to your photo. I guess it's been over five years since you posted this comment, but if you're still interested, I'd love to hear from you. Perhaps I could send you some recent photos of the area? Also, I'd be grateful to learn anything about the Gilmans. Specifically, there is a gulch here named Emma Gulch and I've always wondered if there was an Emma Gilman who it was named after.
Best,
Alisa

Thanks so much for the information. I didn't know that she ended up in Missoula, which is I suppose is why I was looking in the wrong direction. I will most definitely contact the Missoula library and see if I can't find a definite connection between Rhea and the infant McCarthy. That would definitely explain why she died so young. And what are the odds of the same date for two unrelated individuals? Always best to be sure, though. Thanks again, you've made my day.

Rhea Viola McCarthy is listed in the Missoula City cemetery as having died 28 April 1917. She is not in the Mineral County death and burial records. Only an infant, Kate. In the Missoula cemetery records is also an infant, unnamed, who died 28 April 1917, too. This may be mother and child. A query to the Missoula Public Library, Paulette Parpart, Paulette@missoula.lib.mt.us will get you a reply.

Kay Strombo, Mineral County Museum, Superior, MT 59872
mrshezzie@blackfoot.net

I'm trying to find more information on a woman born Rhea V. Smith in Butte in 1891. She appears to have been marries some time between 1909 and 1915 as, according to her sister's obituary, she is living as "Mrs. Rhea McCarthy" in St. Regis in 1815. There's also a listing (it doesn't say where) on the online MT death index for a Rhea V. McCarthy born about 1891 and died 28 Apr 1917. If anyone recognizes this woman or knows of any good resources for Mineral Co for this time period, please let me know. Thanks.

Jackie,

Thanks for the tidbit on “Black Mike”. I’ll be sure to add your words to my Garvey database. FYI, Mike was a frequent visitor to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where a few of his Canadian cousins lived and worked as loggers. That’s where my wife, Eleanor (Garvey) Ashby, first met him. Mike moved from there to Montana circa 1920.

My interest in Mike is genealogy only. Because he’s a member of my wife’s tribe, I have information on his ancestors and will gladly share same with bona fide relatives. If you know of anyone interested in this data, please refer them to me.

Can you identify the parents of Edith Ross? (She was the spouse of Michael John Garvey.) All I have on Edith is her birth date, about 1897, and her birth place, Montana.

Barry Ashby

Here is what my husband remembers about Mike Garvey. He was a small man nicknamed "Black Mike". He was always cranky and bitter-never smiled. My husband sawed logs for Helean Logging in Fish Creek in 1953 when Mike was a scaler in the woods. My husband's father said Mike was a foreman for Ross and Riley, a big logging business in this area. His wife was Ross' daughter. Get in touch-we know someone who probably remembers him too. ahorse@bigsky.net

Cathryn...Thank you very much for searching your records for Michael John Garvey. And the Genevieve Garvey who married in Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho, in 1910, is indeed part of my tribe. (See below.) Please send anything you have on her and her marriage. I assumed - without proof - that she was married in Coeur d'Alene, ID....Barry Ashby

GENEVIEVE MARY GARVEY was born October 22, 1885 in Mayo, near Buckingham, Papineau County, Province Quebec, Canada, and died December 05, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. She married PAUL GERHARD BRAUNE November 09, 1910 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, son of ADOLF BRAUNE and ANNA BIERMANN. He was born May 19, 1879 in Driebetz, Germany, and died August 26, 1954 in Los Angeles, California.

I have copies of many of the Mineral County vital records and do not find your family except in the 1920 census you found. Geraldine was 3 1/2 so I believe Edith and Michael were married closer to 1916. Michael is a logging camp foreman. There were many small lumber camps in the area at that time especially in the western part of the county. I do not find the name in any of the obituary extractions, either.

There is a Genevieve Garvey that married in Wallace, ID in 1910

Sorry, but there doesn't seem to be any further records of the family in our county but will keep track of your request in case something else comes to my attention.

Cathryn Strombo mrshezzie@blackfoot.net

is my grandfather. His WWI Draft Registration shows he worked for Mann Lumber Co. Henderson, Mineral County, MT in 1917-1918. At the time, he was married to my grandmother Bess Venard, although he could have been keeping company with one of his NEXT two wives: Fay Irene Button or Lillian Scissler. We have no record of his whereabouts after this. Any info on him would be appreciated.

Hi There! I live about 5 miles from Cyr. My grandparents were good friends with Andrew. He told them they could be buried in his family cemetary if they wanted. I knew him when I was about 10. I have access to a picture of him horseback when he was in a pony express race from Superior to Missoula. He had long black hair and a cowboy hat. He had brought many plants home with him from his travels and had a large yard full of flowers. Also had a vineyard, had milk cows and also sheep at one time. He wrote manuscripts about his life and travels and stored them in a dynamite box. He wanted Gonzaga U to print his book but they refused since he wanted it printed exactly as he wrote it.
Please contact me for more of what I remember. JR

JR,

Thank you so much for the information on Andrew. He was my great grandfather and I had the pleasure of scanning his original manuscripts in the summer of 2004. Any photos or more information about him or his wife and children would be greatly appreciated. I have a few photos of him and his 4 sons. My father was Bill Garcia and my grandfather was Andrew and Barbara's last son, Bill Garcia. That seems to be a popular name in the Garcia family.

I look forward to corresponding with you.

Thanks,
Barbara
