Thanks for the pictures. Can you tell me why you think it is Richard's and perhaps you should definitely contact David at the York Historical Society as my cousins and I do not live near Montana. Perhaps the Society and yourself can determine if it is Richard's? Thanks so much for the posts.

I have since realized after examining the inscription under magnification, that what I thought was an "o" was indeed an "e." SO, it's Cotter's rifle. The inscription is crude and hand done by Cotter. I will encluse a few pictures to show you. The rifle appears to have been owned by a George Wilson during the Gold Rush and is so dated. So Cotter got it from Wilson or whomever Wilson may have given it to. It's a Model 1841 Tryon rifle dated 1847 purchased for the Mexican War.

they misspelled names all over the place back then so it could be his. Also, there is a cabin in York, MT where a guy named David has a museum about Richard. Maybe they have info on him being called Cottor by mistake or something.

Can you give us any more information about the gun and how you came about having it?

Being adopted and almost 80 years old, I have only just seen a picture of my birth father. It may take me a while to go through albums and find pictures. But as I have time, I will start looking.
I agree with you about Aunt Marie. I only met her once when I was a little girl, but I loved her the first time I met her. She came to visit us once and she definitely made a lasting impression on us all. I know my father loved her dearly. Marie and Grace were my grandmother's sisters. My grandmother's name was Eleanor and they had anothr sister named Jean and two brothers, Joseph and Harold. I know very little about Grace, except that she died at a very young age. Anything else you could tell me about Grace or Marie would be greatfully appreciated. My father passed in 1975 and my aunt a few years later so I have no one who can tell me anything about them. I know it is a lot to ask, but would you possibly consider sending me a copy of any pictures you might have of Grace or Marie, I will gladly pay you for them. Thanks

My parents knew Grace and there is at least one picture of her in my mother's album. I knew Maurice Holmes and his son who was younger than me. Maurice remarried a woman named Lena who was a school teacher and a lovely person. Marie was a wonderful warm person and I thought, as a child, she had a great sense of humor. When we lived In Chula Vista, CA, Marie and Colonel (or George) visited us often and one year rented a home there for a time. Marie and George built and maintained a motel and service station in White Sulphur Springs. They lived in the main unit. I don't know what else I can tell you but don't be afraid to ask questions that might jog my memory.

I'm sorry I haven't replied before now - I just saw your posting. Marie was my Grandmother's sister. I only met her once when I was in grade school, but I still remember her visit and how terrific she was. Did your parents, by any chance know my Greataunt Grace, who was married to Maurice D. Holmes. All I know of her was that they married in 1923 and she died in 1926. I didn't start my research until after my father had passed, so I didn't even know that she had existed. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Pat Burke

Hi,
The Meagher County News is the newspaper of record for the county. I'd contact the Meagher County-City Library, 406-547-2250 and ask if they have those newspapers after 16 Aug 1945 on site.

If not, ask them where they are stored.

I think you'd also want a copy of Frank's death certificate. You can order one the Clerk & Recorder, Meagher County, 406-547-3612. Their web iste is http://meaghercounty.mt.gov/clerk_recorder.html .

I don't know where coroner reports are filed but contact info for the County Sheriff/Coroner can be found at http://lepc.meaghercounty.net/node/69.
Hello,
It's nice to hear from a member of the Montana Dreidleins! My grandfather left a wonderful diary of his 1932 trip from Philadelphia across the country. In it he describes his visit with the family in White Sulphur Springs. I'd be happy to invite you to see the family tree where I have the diary posted along with the photos he took. There are a few photos the Dreidleins in Pennsylvania posted there too. I'd be curious to share more stories and compare photos.
Tom
tquinn6935@yahoo.com

Just one more thing...My Mom talked very nicely about Mamie. My sister even remembers her. My Mom said Mamie was a very very nice lady. Was the girl she raised my Mom's Dad's daughter? So my Uncle Pat has a daughter? Diane Lowry. Do you know her? I am really excited! Thank you so much for sharing!

I am so excited! That is wonderful news. You know that name Melanie or Melody rings a bell. I have been doing genealogy for a very long time, and this lady I knew helped me do some research and she gave me a name, and I think Melody or Melanie was it. I am not sure that I saved the information though because I didn't think the person was related. She thought that the lady was my Mom and Uncle Mike's sister, and I said no...but maybe that is her. I am going to look through my papers and see if I have it. I remember the lady was from southern California. My Mom is going to be so excited when I tell her. I will be so happy if you can get pictures. I have pictures of my Uncle Mike because we were raised around him. My Mom and him were very close. Uncle Pat was also around us alot and I really remember him, but it was when I was very very young. I only remember meeting your Dad once when he lived in Montana. So is your mother the one who is the granddaughter of the Theodore Ringling? I would sure love to have pictures of my Mom's Dad's side of the family. I did a family history book for my Mom when she turned 75 in 2009, and I tried so hard to find a picture of her Dad for her, but I wasn't succuessful. It would be wonderful to have pictures. If I would have started doing genealogy when my Uncle was still alive, I would have more information and probably sources for pictures because he was raised with his Dad. My Mom was raised with her Mother, but she has told me stories of when her Mom and Dad were married. They lived in Montana and Oregon for short periods of time. I just want to be able to picture him in my mind somehow. He died before I was born and my Mother was on 17. I never even talked to my Uncle about his Dad. Well I better save some of message for tomorrow. I do have a tree on here and you are welcome to look at it. I have it as a public tree. I have traced my grandfather Lowry's ancestry back to Ireland through his Mom's side of the family. I am going to try and do some research this week and get back to you about that other lady Melodie or Melany. I am pretty sure the name was Melanie or Melodie DeLaney. Well my new found cousin, I hope you have a wonderful evening! Talk to you soon.

It is interesting, you are OceanBigSky;one of my email addresses is MtnSky.
So we are cousins! Two of my sisters are your cousins also. Jim (my Dad) remarried and I have heard he had a daughter. I am trying to locate her. Her name is either Melodie or Melanie. Uncle Pat had one daughter. Her name is Diane Lowry and last I knew she lived in S.Cal.Now you have a slew of cousins.I suspect either Diane or Melody might have pictures. Mamie raised a girl and she might have pics of everyone. I will try hard on my end to find them.

Hi, wow this is exciting. I am a little disappointed about the no picture, but at least I have made another connection.

Yes, I am realted to Mike Lowry. He was my Uncle. My mother is Alta Lowry (maided name), so Howard Lowry was my grandfather also, but I never knew him. He died way before I was born. My Uncle Mike also passed away in 1986. My mother, thank the lord, is still alive. I actually remember Jim, he was my Mother's half brother. They shared the same Dad, but had different mothers. I would love to add Lowry pictures to my genealogy. What pictures do you have? I would love to have some of Jim, Pat and any others.

I am really excited to get know a little more about you. Just so you know, my name is Terry and I am Alta's youngest daughter. I live in northern California. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for posting this, Henry Foster was my great-grandfather's uncle. I know that Emily had two brothers too, Rollins and Eugene, but I don't know her mother's name. I found Henry on the 1880 census, but there were no women in the camp, just 14 men, farmers and miners.

I wonder if anyone has any more information on this family? Was her husband Ellis Phillips, it doesn't say in the obit?

Thank you for your interest. I know that Annie was dead at least by the 1900 census, since the 1900 census showed my G. Grandmother had 6 kids and only 5 were living in 1900.. I know the other five and that they were living well into the 1930's. I was thinking I had two successive census'. 1880, and 1890, but you point it out I have 1880 and 1900. Now that, it was 20 yrs later, she very well may have married and the name is probably not Satterwhite. Which would mean it is impossible to find an obit. Thank you.
Was there a county census in 1890? It would have been Diamond City, Meagher County MT. Or possibly they had arrived in Kalispell, Flathead County by then. Hard to follow without those Census'.
Thank you for showing me, now I realize I may be chasing up the wrong tree.

I'm not sure if I understand your time frame. There wasn't any census for 1890--well, there was, but the records were destroyed by fire at the National Archives in the early 1900s.

Annie may have survived until 1900, the next census that is available after 1880. She was probably married by that time.

I am trying to locate Lowry relatives that have pictures of my grandfather Howard Bartlett Lowry and any other pictures that a person would be willing to share. Here is what I know: He was born in 1898 in Chadron, NB - moved to Montana with his wife Mamie and two sons James Sylvester and Howard B. Jr. - he left Montana abt 1931 or 32 and married my grandmother Nellie Hudspeth and they had two children, Mike and Alta (my mother). I have enough demographic information, but I am looking for a picture of my grandfather. He died in September of 1954 at the Sherman Hotel and is buried at the Mayn Cemetery outside of WSS, MT. I want to give my mother a special gift for her 75th birhtday, a picture of her father (she doesn't have one). No matter how you feel about how people's lives turned out - please open your heart and help me. Thanks

Dear Sue,

I believe we are distant relatives through the Pottsville, PA Dreidleins. Below are a few excerpts from a letter that might be of interest to you. I'd love to find out more about the Native American connection. We have a story in my family with little evidence. I'm also interested in Stephen's father Richard. According to my Aunt Clara, he was a Hessian soldier fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War and was given a land grant in PA. I'd also like to confirm Elizabet Dreidlein's maiden name. My Great Aunt Clara, who wrote this letter, is living in Florida.

I hope to hear from you,
Tom Quinn Jr.,fourth great grandson of Richard Dreidlein, Philadelphia
...

From a 1976 letter to Thomas Quinn by his aunt Clara Quinn McKnight as told to her by her mother, Hattie Ritzel Quinn:

I was with my mother the last five years of her life and I would often just sit and talk to her about her Pennsylvania Dutch Ancestors. It was very interesting. My mother was in bed with a stroke for almost five years. Often when she would have "small" strokes, she would revert back to her childhood and could only remember the German dialect. Sometimes it would last for days at a time. It would be difficult for me to understand her.
...
I understand Richard Dreidlein came to this country to fight with the British. He was a Hessian soldier. After the war, The Hessian soldiers were given a choice of going back or remaining in this country. Your grandfather elected to stay here. I understand he was given a grant of land to settle on somewhere in Penna. Uncle Leo told me he often saw the papers for the grant of land when he would go to visit Grandmother Ritzel in Pottsville, Pa. He said they were kept in a trunk in the attic. Don't know what ever happened to them.

The Dreidlein homestead was in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. They had a large sheep ranch and a store on Main Street. They would butcher the sheep and sell it in their store.

Stephen Dreidlein was a very strict German. If any of the sheep became lost while the children were supposed to be watching them, he would make them go out to the mountain and would not allow them to come home until the sheep were found. He did not believe in any formal religion. He read the bible aloud to the family everyday. All the major decisions were made by him picking up the bible, opening the book, and making the decision by what was on that page. He raised all the children to select their own religion, if they so wanted, when they were old enough to do so.

As the West opened, part of the Dreidlein family moved out to Montana where they continued to raise sheep. I imagine the East was getting too crowded for sheep raising. If you remember your old western movies, you will remember the great battles between the cattlemen and the sheep ranchers. Your kin were probably in the thick of it.

The Dreidleins spoke the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect always. My mother said the most difficult thing she can remember was when she went to school ( her mother turned Catholic) and had to try to speak and write high German. The nuns would make fun of her German dialect.
...
My mother (Hattie Ritzel) told me she often heard her mother (Minnie) speak about her Indian grandmother. My mother said that she was the daughter of an Indian chief. Your Great Great Grandmother. Elizabeth Dreidlein, said she remembered her Grandmother in Indian dress, smoking a pipe, sitting by the fireplace. She also kept her Indian hair braids all her life. That's all I know, only what mother told me.
...
Great great grandmother's [Elizabeth] name before marrying Steven Dreidlein was "Grow" [spelling?]. Before that, the name was "Love." That is as far back as I know. My mother wasn't sure of the name "Love," but to the best of her knowledge, "Love" is right. I believe great grandmother's family was in this country before the American Revolution.
