Ira William Dakin

My 2nd Great Grand Uncle Ira William Dakin was born in PA in 1861 and moved to Montana sometime after 1880 by himself. I know he married a woman named Sarah Ritz-McGurry in 1893 in Sheridan, Madison, MT. He was a resident of Virginia City and most likely died there. His death was 25 Aug 1915.

Does anyone know if an obituary would be written back then? What newspapers were in Madison County back in 1915? I would like to find out where he would be buried.

They had 5 children, William, Archibald Asbury, Mary E., Emma M., and Frances Belle; all born in Wapello County and the last born in December 1864. His July 1863 Civil War registration gives his home as Cass Township, Wapello County, Iowa, but sometime shortly after the birth of his last child he must have traveled to the Montana Territory for after that time he is no longer found with Frances or the family. His Montana census entries identify him as married, and a couple of the children ended up in Montana, so he must have continued to maintain contact and perhaps send money back to help support the family.

Samuel Hayden is Dead Samuel Hayden died last Thursday at Lakeview in the Centennial valley. The body was taken to Silver Star by train, where the funeral occurred Sunday afternoon. His death was due to a cancer. Mr. Hayden was within five days of 75 years of age, and came to this state nearly 40 years ago. He located near Silver Star, and for a number of years was engaged in ranching and livestock raising. He also was interested in mining at different times in the Silver Star district. During recent years he became enfeebled in health and disposed of most of his property. He is survived by his daughter of Lakeview and a son, A.H. Hayden, of Silver Star. The body was buried in the Silver Star cemetery.
Frederick LATUS 1854-1936 and descendants

Hi - I posted a query on the Madison Co. board a while ago about an ancestor of mine, William John FOREMAN of Virginia City. I have since learnt a lot about him thanks to the lady who answered my query here. I have now discovered that William's sister Margaret Ann LATUS nee FOREMAN (1854-1936) and her husband Frederick LATUS (1855-1922) emigrated from England to Madison County. I have pieced together quite a lot of online information about them. Much of the family moved on to British Columbia but daughter Kate Ann (Katie, Katherine) b. 1877 seems to have stayed on in Montana and married Charles David SAVAGE (1864-1924). Another daughter Bessie b. 1880 married John E STEWART b. about 1869. They and their own descendants seem to have moved on to other states and other counties in Montana, including Gallatin, Meagher and Yellowstone. Most of what I know (including censuses up to 1940) can be found in my 'rogerlwhite' tree on ancestry.com. If anyone reading this has further information about LATUS descendants in Madision, Montana or other states I would love to hear from them. Thanks for help recieved.

Hi Linda,

Neither Elizabeth or J. Benjamin Thompson appear in the Montanta Death Records 1900-1909. However, you can contact the Madison County Clerk & Recorder, http://madison.mt.gov/departments/clerk_recorder/clerk_recor... and request they look for their death certificates.

I did find the new_family_2010-08-26 Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/37321308/person/19073608865 which contains your family. Most larger city libraries provide free access to Ancestry.com.

Elizabeth Maxwell Thompson died 13 Oct 1909 in Ennis, Madison, MT.

I didn't find either one in findagrave.com.

There are a couple of volunteers who will look up various cemetery indexes at www.hometownchronicles.com/mt/madison/lookups.htm .

Contact The Thompson-Hickman County Library, http://madison.mt.gov/departments/library/library.asp for copies of their obituaries. It is possible that they didn't have one published. Successful Searching!

So, you should know the other family members. Your FIRST genealogy related research would be "interviews" of your mother and siblings. Your knowledge of your grandparents MUST be more than you posted, their birth place, death place, where they lived, where died and other information about them. Knowing where your father lived during his youth in Montana should identify more than just where born. Look for information where he graduated from high school, look for information in his high school year book. Your MOTHER is the very first interview for information... She should know a bit about his life before Ohio. The obit even says he spent most of his Montana life in Columbia Falls. Did he attend class reunions? If not, those in his class would have info.
Hi,
Do you have copies of their obituaries? Obituaries usually list survivors. After you track them down, they might have more pictures and information.

Also if you have a family tree posted on the internet, please post that URL because it saves a volunteer time.

I don't know where you'd contact for John's obituary in Cleveland, Ohio. You can post that query on that county's Message Board in Ohio. Most all information is organizationed by County, therefore, it's important to know them. RootsWeb has a city/county converter. Click on Home on RootsWeb and then about-halfway down on the left hand side you'll see the City/County lookup.

Mary Sicard Kennedy Burd died in Columbia Falls, Flathead Co., MT. She might have had children with Mr. Burd. There is an obituary volunteer for that county at genlookups.com/volunteers/dale.htm .

I didn't find Maryls's death info. She might have married again after Jack died.

Regarding Jack, there isn't a volunteer in Yolo Co. I'd contact the California State Library, library.ca.gov/calhist/genealogy.html . They have the largest collections of newspapers in the state. They don't have the staff to answer obituary requests but will send you a list of local researchers who will find the obit (if one was published) for a fee. Successful Searching!

Mary,
I see you've only posted five messages on the Rootsweb message board system. When you post it's important to provide the basic information that you know on the persons you seek. This information is their full Date of Birth, any married names for females, etc. In this case, I was able to find quite a bit on the family, but this is still important especially on common names. I did review your other postings to see what other information you have. I looked for posted family trees but didn't find one in your name, although some of the family were identified in trees. BUT, be very careful about using any unsourced data provided in them. I OFTEN find them wrong, not only on dates, but persons and whole sets of family. I often find volunteers providing wrong information.

Francis M. Swartz, would have been born about 1913/1914 in Missouri. Do you have her married name(s)?

I find a:
Frances Swartz marriage to a Leo Baril, 8 July 1937 at Beaverhead Co, MT.
Frances S (Swartz?) marriage to a J.C. Backes 3 Dec 1952 at Dillon, Beaverhead Co.

The California Death Index:
Frances M. Backes, born 17 Dec 1913 in Missouri, died 13 May 1966 in Riverside County, California. Mothers maiden name: Lamm.
--The Riverside, CA, matches with the news article dated Sep 1956, below.

A family tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4978549/person/1867836989?ssr...=
identified Leo James Baril, born 5 Aug 1899 in Sheridan, Madison Co, MT, died 1 April 1949 in Sheridan. He had married a Helen Moran and had a son, Bruce Moran Baril (Died 1961). He married a Frances Swartz, born 17 Dec 1918, died 13 May 1966. The 1918 is wrong, someone reading from a record probably misread 1913... That is why ACCURACY is so important.
Another family tree identifies Frances and Leo had a daughter, no information.

--------------News Articles--------
---A 10 September 1939 issue of the Montana Standard (Butte)
Twin Bridges Bride Honored at Shower.
Mrs James Swartz, a recent bride...
Invited guests included Mrs. Claude Swartz... Mrs. Leo Baril
---2 Sep 1956 issue, same paper
Miss Sharon Baril, dau of the late Leo Baril and Mrs. Baril, former resident of Sheridan, left last week, for her present home, in Riverside, California after a visit of six weeks with relatives in Sheridan and vicinity.
---25 July 1935 issue Helena Independent:
Leo Baril and sister Patty and Francis Swarts [sic] returned to their home in Sheridan Sunday.

---------Her family--------
The other person posting left out some very important information that can support information found, and also help provide some proof of other information. And has a problem with accuracy. NEVER use information provided in one record base as PROOF, it should be supported by other documentation. US Census is FILLED with errors, but they can help support other information when used together. A birth certificate date usually stands as proof, a death certificate date usually stands as proof; but other data on those documents needs to be proven. For example, information on a death certficate is provided by the "Informant." Often the Informant is wrong about information. Father's name on a birth certificate is sometimes wrong when the child was born out of wedlock, mother's maiden name was wrong when the mother didn't want it identified, etc.

For this search, the WWI Draft registration identifies Claude's DOB as being 24 April 1888, the 1900 Census shows it as April 1887. The 1910 census was enumerated May 19, showing Claude as 22. The 1920 Census was enumerated April 7, 1920, Claude was 31 (If born in 1888, he would have turned 32 on the 24th), the 1930 Census was enumerated on April 30, showing Claude as 42. So, it strongly appears he was born in April 1888, not 1887.

The WWI Year of Registration was not identified. Based on the information provided below, he registered on June 5, 1917.

In the Census of 1920 and 1930, Claude's father was shown as being born in Missouri, mother in Illinois. This supports the findings of the 1900 Census, as these parents of this Claude were born in those States.

--------Francis M and Mary R---Parents of Claude
A family tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24812892/person/1769224283
identifies Francis M. Swarz was the son of Alexander Swartz and Catherine. In 1860 he was in Union, Barton Co, MO. In 1870, East For, Barton Co.

The 1800 Census for Leroy, Barton Co, MO
Catherine Swarts(sic) age 41, born in Virginia to father born in Ireland, mother in VA
Francis M, age 22
Mary, 18, daugher-in-law
John, 10, son (of Catherine)
Sabatha, 8, dau (of C)
Earnest L, Grandson (of C) born May, age 21 days, census enumerated on 11 June so born on April 20. The Census does not indicate who the parents were of Earnest. He could be a son of Francis and Mary, or to one of Francis' siblings: Sarah (age 18 in 1870), George (age 15 in 1870), Samantha (age 8 in 1870), Adelia (age 4 in 1870) and Lenora (age 2 in 1870)

The 1900 Census of West Bozeman, Gallatin Co, MT
Francis Swartz, born Jan 1858 in Missouri to father born in Pennsylvania, mother in Kentucky, farmer/renting, married 20 years (1879/1880)
Mary R, born Nov 1861 in Illinois to father born in IL, mother in KY, mother of 7/6 living.
Marvin M, Nov 1882
Otto H, Dec 1885
Claude, April 1887
Wallace, Dec 1889
Fern, Feb 1896
--The MT Death Index shows a Mary Swartz died 27 May 1908
--In the 1910 Census for Leroy, Barton Co, MO
Frances M, age 52, born in MO, to father born in PA, mother in VA, farmer
Mary A, age 49, born in IL to father born in IL, mother in KY
Wallace M, 17,
Fern, 14
Lillard(as written, name was Leonard in the 1920 Census), son, age 9, all children born in MO.
--The 1920 Census for Ozark, Barton Co, MO
Mary A, age 57, widow
Leonard L, 19.

The WWI Draft cards:
Wallace Maron Swartz, born Dec 6, 1893, living in Arcadia, KS, registered in Barton Co, MO.

-----------Claude and Mary------
The 1910 Census for Rudy, Fremont County, ID, enumerated 19 May 1910
Claud, age 22, born in Missouri to both parents born in the US, farmer/renting
Della, 19, born in Missouri to both parents born in Missouri
John, age 3/12, born in ID
--If his age is accurate, based on the enumeration date, John was born about Jan/Feb 1910.

The WWI Draft Registration Image Database identifies Claude was born April 24, 1888, in Liberal, Missouri. Liberal is in Barton County.
-He was living in Sheridan, MT, and registered in Madison County, MT on June 5. YEAR not identified on the form.
Identifying the year:
On 6 April 1917, the US entered into WWI
There were three draft registrations dates:
-5 June 1917 for all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-one.
-5 June 1918, men who had reached age twenty-one since the first
registration (Also included in this registration was a supplemental
registration of 24 August 1918 for those men reaching age twenty-one after 5
June 1918.)
-12 September 1918, men ages eighteen through forty-five were required to
register. This means that we have genealogical data on virtually every man
(around 98%) born between 13 September 1872 and 12 September 1900, if he was living in the United States during World War I.
---Claude was born in 1888. In 1917, he would have been 29, so he registered on June 5, 1917, National Registration Day, a National Holiday.

The 1920 Census of Brandon, Madison Co, MT, enumerated April 7, living on McHesson Creek Road.
Claude E, age 31, born in Missouri to father born in Missouri, mother in Illinois, farmer/owned
Della, age 29, born in MO to both parents born in MO
Delbert E, 8, MO(sic)
Francis M, 6, MO(sic)
William R, 4 0/12, MT(sic) (Based on enumeration date of April 7, William was born in March/April 1916
Vernon L, 1 11/12, MT(sic) (Would have been born April 8-May 7, 1918).
--This indicates that Claude and Mary moved from MT back to MO between 1910 and 1916.

The 1930 Census for Jefferson, Madison County, MT, enumerated April 30. Claude Swartz, 42, born in Missouri to father born in MO, mother in IL. Farmer/General Farm, first married age 22(1909/1910)
Della, 38, born in Missouri to both parents born in MO, first married age 18 (1908/1909)
Delbert, 18, MO
Frances M, 16, MO
William R, 14, MT
Vernon L, 11, MT
Mary F, 9, MT
Ruth S, 6, MT
Dorthy F, 3 11/12 (About April/May 1926)
Nettie J.

The Grant Kohrs library reference is for IN library use only. Their resources do not include current day newspapers.

Alfred E. Johnston's obit was published in the December 17, 1972 edition of the Montana Standard. I can transcribe or send the page via email.
--married Maudie A. Eaton July 2, 1925. Surviving are Maudie, son: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson, Deer Lodge
--There were five family trees showing Alfred, four showed Maudie, none showed children.

The Social Security Death Index:
Maudie A. Kyle, born 28 Sep 1907, died 25 Sep 2001, her SSN: 516-66-0488 was issued in Montana in 1951. Her "last residence" Deer Lodge, Powell County, MT.
--The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record," and possibly the address where correspondence by the SSA was sent. It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in 1972 was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

The Montana Death Index: 1954-2002; and the 1860-2007, both show her death was in Powell County.

US Phone and Address Directories 1993-2002:
Maudie A. Kyle, residing in Deer Lodge, MT, from 1993-1999.
Addresses found: 1100 Texas Ave (19 persons recorded); 704 Main Street and 626 Mill Street (only she is shown).

Son, Robert F. Johnston is shown at 626 Mill Street, see www.zabasearch.com shows him with address and phone number.

Adele and Blanche Wilson died between 1900-1907. Tom Wilson, Adele's husband, was a farmer and rented land from a Henry Marshall near Laurin, Madison County, Montana. The land was Section 24.

It is said that Adele and Blanche died of starvation and Tom Wilson with his remaining daughter, Nellie, left Montana and settled back by family in Kansas.

What happened to Adele and Blanche. Was there an epidemic or severe winter? Cannot find any information on them. Help appreciated.

Judging by the 1900 census, Lucille's Mother had 7 children, 5 of whom were living. Unfortunately, the Montana death index didn't start that early. It looks like by 1930 the family was in California - Mabel was living with her son Theodore in Los Angeles. There was a Mabel R. Cheney of the right age who died in California in 1961 who may be her.
http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi

I didn't find a death for Zebulon in Montana. He may have died in California, but the online death index doesn't start until 1940.
At www.familysearch.org you can find the marriage for Zebulon and Mabel, and for their daughter Ruth. She married Howard Galusha.
You may or may not have any of the following information, I'm posting for archives and anyone "happening" to find it.

I found your family tree online while looking for additional information on Nelly. Her son, Richard, might have known something about Grandma...but he has passed per your tree. Her second marriage to Ross Culbertson sometime between 1920 and 1930. In the 1930 Census he was 47 (1882/1883), had a son Harry L., born about 1911/1912 in Nebraska. They were living in Ustick, Ada County, ID.

Idaho Death Index
Nellie Bly Culbertson, died in Nampa, Canyon County, ID, on 5 Dec 1950.
Ross died 1 May 1946 in Nampa.

Social Security Death Index:
Harry L. Culbertson, born 29 Jan 1913, "last residence" 12 Jan 1988 in Salem, Oregon. The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived, but is known only as the "home of record" by the Social Secuity Administration. I have found the deaths of persons far from where the "last residence was identified, and the person had never resided at that location. It is NOT necessary based on a benefit to the person, survivor or the lumpsum death payment; but, I have seen all. It is sometimes where notification of death was sent to the SSA; but not necessarily where the person had lived.
--The Oregon Death Index:
Harry L. Culbertson, died 12 Jan 1988 in Marion Co. While this somewhat confirms the SSDI, it is where he died, not where he had lived.

I didn't find a family tree for Harry. He might have known what became of "Grandma," but he had passed. His children, if any, may have heard a story, but unless they had done significant genealogy research as you have, they probably don't know. And, since there isn't a family tree, there probably isn't a person that might have further information.

Now, and last night, I looked at the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census' for ANY Adele, Del*, Blanch, in Idaho and Montana, using criteria of place of birth, place of birth of parents. I found no person meeting the basic criteria in those States. I would "speculate" the story of death might be true, especially with Nellie being old enough to "possibly" have been a part, or had lived through it.

So, information goes back to the limited potential records in the limited genealogy research area of Montana.

Good Luck. No need to respond to this post.

Ron Bestrom

Thank you for the valuable information. These people were not ancestors although Thomas was a younger brother of my ancestor. I was just trying to fill in some blanks based on family stories. All we know is that Thomas returned with Nellie to Kansas near family, she married, was widowed, remarried, and moved to Idaho. Thomas was in the "poorhouse" in Kansas in 1930 at an advanced age. Very sad story really. Trying to fill in as family stories say that Adele and Blanche died of starvation in Montana.

Again, thank you for your help.

The 1900 US Census for "Laurrie"(as transcribed), Madison County, MT. Enumerated 6/12/1900.
Thomas A. Wilson, born April 1855 in Missouri to father born in Maryland, mother in Pennsylvania, farmer, renting.
Adele, born July 1860 in Michigan to father born in Ohio, mother in Pennsylvania, mother of 3/2 living.
Blach [sic] J. born Nov 1887, in Montana
Nelly [sic] B, born Sep 1888, MT.
--In 1910, Thomas A, living with Nellie B Mealey and husband Fred, widower. Living in Carlyle, Allen County, Kansas.

Because he was a farmer, I checked the Bureau of Land Management records to see if he had obtained a land patent under the Homestead Act.
There was no record. Had he filed, back in those days persons were sometimes buried on the farm land in family cemeteries.
--His neighbor (on the census) Henry M. Marshall did have several land patents.
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/results/default.aspx?searchCri...

His land was primarily in Section 24 of Township 5 South, Range 5 West.
Here is an overview of that area. The red colored squares are Sections, a Section is one mile in width. On this topo map you can see the red colored 36, that is Section 36. Section 25 is the square directly above that one and Section 24 is directly above Section 25.
http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=14&Z=12&X=12...

Here is the topographical map showing Section 24. http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=12&X=51...
Because Thomas was renting farm land, it is "possible" he was renting (sharecropping?) from Marshall. So, the Wilson family were probably about three to seven miles from Laurin or Sheridan. Even with the harsh winters, I would suspect if starvation had been the cause, Thomas might have been able to at least go to a neighbor for food. Or perhaps it was too cold to get away. I guess I'm speculating on the cause...it is MY speculation not based on any fact. I also would speculate on other possible events (he or she leaving the family, murder by strangers, etc., etc.). Family lore is sometimes based on fact, sometimes not even close. It depends on the source and the events; and who might possibly be spared knowing the truth.

As you identified, they are not on the Montana Death Records, 1900 to 1909. I don't know if you have "officially" attempted to obtain a Death Certificate. The period 1900-1906 included the time frame the State did not "require" or track them. There "might" be a Death Certificate that was produced; however, the events (as stated) appear to not finding a DC. I would suggest an attempt to obtain one. For the date of death, I'd suggest just using the period 1900 to 1906, and identifying Laurin, Madison County as the area. They are $3.00
http://madison.mt.gov/departments/clerk_recorder/birth_death...

Cemetery transcriptions are rare, those that are have missed stones, broken or unreadible, or just missing, or there are no records. Cemeteries near Laurin is the Laurin Cemetery, Taylor 3.6 miles South; Sheridan 6.4 miles NW; Nevada City 7.5 miles SE, Boothill (Virginia City...been there) 8.7 miles SE.

The Montana State Genealogical Society in Helena, MT, offers query's...for a fee. I don't usually recommend such, but your search is probably beyond that for most States where research is not as confined.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtmsgs/MSGS_queries.htm

Your search comes down to finding a death certificate; finding a local newspaper in that area, publishing between 1900 and 1907, and identifying at least a death notice (such a death, if true, may have been covered by a reporter. In those days, a true obit was reporter written). The story might be found as far as Virginia City.; a cemetery transcription identifying their burial. Difficult...

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Contact funeral homes in that area to see if there are records which there should be, even if no stone should be some kind of information. Also town/village clerks and/or libraries may be able to help you. It is also possible that they were buried on the land that they lived on so no record. Churches also hold records even if it is itinerant ministers who go from church to church so check all churches in area even if not of same faith. Newspapers also posted all kinds of information, while they did not post obits such as known today, they did post death notices (which are totally different from the paid funeral notices), death notices are usually just a couple of lines noting the persons death and if it is a childs it might lists the parents name.

Happy Hunting!

Seek death information on Adele (Della) Wilson and daughter Blanche. Della moved to Montana with her husband, Thomas Wilson circa mid-1880s. Blanche was born 1887 and Nellie 1888. Lived in the Laurin (near Sheridan), Madison Co., Montana. Times must have been rough as both Adele and Blanche died-family said they starved to death. Thomas and surviving daughter Nellie returned to Kansas about 1906-1907. Not listed in the Montana Death Index. Not sure if family had money for a headstone. Any information appreciated.

Twin Bridges Cemetery

Greetings from Canada

Wondering if anyone knows of an on-line transcription of this cemetery? I'm trying to find out if there are any other CHENEY family members buried in Twin Bridges Cemetery other than Lucille who I found on findagrave. Looking to find out what her age was (unable to make out in the photo) and whether her father and or any siblings are also buried in this cemetery.

Thank you for any information you may be able to provide.

As I read the article on Elijah, I had a question:
I have George Pollinger being born in 1809, but yet his son's article says he was a soldier in the war of 1812. What has your research found as to George's birth year?

Thanks again for posting this article! I wrote down many notes about Elijah's family for my research.

I would love to see the pictures of the family? Can it be scanned sent in email? What is the best way.

Now, I am having doubts that I am on the right track after all.
Did I mention a few times that a Mary MEYER had a license to marry John D. FEHRING at Galena, Illinois. Those are the two I am trying to mesh with those of Montana. Even though the middle Initial of one at Galena carries a D initial.Oct 1847is the date I look for.

FEHRING, JOHN D -
MEYER, Mary Intended spouse.
1873-02-14 D/ 117- JO DAVIESS, Illinois
at Galena Jo Daviess county, Illinois.
Which could have been my
Mary who immigrated in 1869 with Fritz or
Fred Meyer,
who is no stranger to us. However, maybe she is not the one who immigrated with him. Census of that area suggests a different immigration year. Also I have not determined when Fehring and Meyer married. The immigration year is far different than I would want to see. He probably naturalized in california or even Iowa. Something else for me to work on.
I am told that the marriage of the two did not follow
through at Galena. There was another marriage record there.
She could have gone with him
to places others have moved to settle.
There was another Fehring there who married Gertrude Lamp? The Carr tree.Involves Wi. I think.

I have no clue what they look like either. Would she look like the grandmother?
So many times those who move to different states follow others and others follow them.

Wouldn't the copy of the marriage license at latter day saints be the same as that at the court house? Maybe I might find something at the land records. I also wonder what church they might have attended there?
Hermesmyer is interesting. I shall have to check into that.I should check Iowa for Garrisons marriage.

Thanks so much for your help

John Bernard Fehring Family
Not too much is known about John Bernard Fehring, except that he was born in Germany in 1828 and came to San Francisco in 1849. He returned to Germany and then came back to San Francisco where he was engaged in mining. From there he went to Nevada and worked his way to Montana. He settled near Sheridan where he spent the first winter mining and it was at this time he met the Hermesmyer family. This led to a close relationship that lasted therest of their lives.
John Fehring and Mary Meyer were married in Iowa. She two, was born in Germany in 1847. They then moved to Nevada City, Montana. Sometime afterwards, they lived in a lovely two-story house surrounded by a neat, white, picket fence in Adobetown.
The Fehrings had two children, a son and a daughter. William Bernard was born in Nevada City, November 18, 1874. He attended the Normal College at Twin Bridges and later to Chicago where he graduated from Rush Medical College in 1903. He practiced medicine in Chicago until he died at an early age on January 10, 1914.
Elsie Fehring was born in 1876 at Nevada City, Montana. She married James M. Garrison in Dillon, Montana. They lived in Adobetown, then later moved to a ranch in the lower Big Hole Valley. She passed away in Dillon in 1950.
At one time a building in Adobetown, owned by Mr. Fehring was used as a blacksmith shop. Above it was a large sign with a picture of a black horse painted at the top. On the day of Mrs. Fehring's funeral, a man from Sheridan asked for the sign and received it. Reportedly it was sent to the State Historical Museum in Helena for preservation.
John Bernard Fehring died in 1904 amd his wife, Mary, in 1907. Both are laid to rest in the Nevada Cemetery.

This article was written by Mrs. Edna Harris, in the Madison County History Book. There is also a picture of Elsie Fehring Garrison and one of Dr. William B. Fehring. If you would like copies, let me know. Pictures do not copy well from the history book, but sometimes it's just nice to have the. Also if you'd like a copy of the marriage license of Elsie and James Garrison I can go to the court house and get one for you.

I have noticed that there were other Fehrings in Montana. and other spellings ferring, fearing etc.
On the marriage record it stated a William Fehring. And a Wolfe surname.? Elsie Fehring brother died as a physican with diabetes in cook county Illinois. But he was buried at Adler, Montana. It mentions that his father was called Bernard. others say John Fehring.
Several documents as in census etc list Elsie Fehring Garrisons mother's birth day, various dates 1848, 1852 etc.

Also a Garrison held land at Greene county, same area as Mary Fehring land. She had a court case with railroad over swamp land Highland in Greene county,Iowa.
They had mentioned my Fred Meyer, a tenant on the land. Before 1900 and court either 1905 or so. Google books carry several books about it. He settled there in 1882-3 from Jackson county Iowa. I suspect she died before it was solved. Maybe not. Wonder If they had to participate in court.

I also see some emigration to Washington state. I think I read in some book about the pioneers to this area. Just haven't found marriage record of Elsie Fehrings Garrisons parents. I did find cemetery stones.

Well, I had to prattle. Thanks again and if you hit any gold mines of info or strike a bell, remember me.

thank you so much.

I have no proof of my fehring of jo davies county and Meyer of their. I don't know if went to Jackson county Iowa yet, either. But If I were to base my hunch on what I heard from a man who knew about my Meyer family in 1979and relayed some surnames to me, I would say I am on the right track. Just have to make them line up. One name he said that I see here was Hand.
I did find the Garrison line from google search and it covers what you said. If you need the link let me know. Also at Lds - a Robert in Canada had info a bit lacking.
Again thanks so much.
Wonder if there is a Buckley.
