I received a message which I accidently deleted. The inquire was about a Liilie B. Fenske who married a Fister. Lillie was the sister of a Charles Fenske who married a Mathilda Fundum ( who is my mother's mother's sister). Mathilda died at an early age leaving four daughters which I have not been able to trace. Charles Fenske died in 1956, I have some clues from his "obit" in a small town newspaper. A note from the message I deleted included the names Michelle and Carl, if this was you contact me again.

Hi,
I know this is a long shot, but I do you have any information on the Fundum Line. I recently came across information that shows Fundum as Vorndam. I am researching the Vorndam family line and wonder why Vorndam and Fundum get interchanged with one another. Do you have any Fundum contacts that might know?
Appreicate all the help possible.
Thanks

Surnames: Fundum or Vordum, Vordam
The Fundum/Vorndum name has been a puzzle to me also. There was a story that circulated in my side of the family which said that a granfather was trying to scam a very rich individual, and changed his name from Fundum to Vorndum.

In the past year I discovered an "obit" on my great grandfather Herman Henry Fundum, who lived the last part of his life in/near Battle Creek, Nebraska. From the obit I was able to link in Ev. German church records from Hiddenhausen, North-Rhine,Germany, also Oetinghausen. The name in these records varies a bit. Vorndamme. vorn Damme, and some others, but I feel that these are just spelling or pennmanship.

I have just begun to copy and study those German church records. At this point I am leaning to the exlaination that Fundum is the Americanization of the German surname.

My part of the Fundum family orginally settled in Hancock county Ohio. As of May of 2008 there was one Fundum in the Findlay, Ohio phone book. The McComb cemetery has at least three Fundum's buried in a close cluster. When I visited this cemetery in early May I noticed two tomb stones in bad repair which appeared to contain the surname Vorndamme. I plan to contact the geno society of the area, or the county land records and follow-up on this,

Paul Claus

Paul
Thanks for posting a reply.
The name Vorndam, that I know of, was spelled Vorndamme, Vorn Damme, and was changed as these people became more Americanized. The Vorndam families I know of and have records of lived in Quincy Illinois and then spread out from there. They immigrated to the U.S. through the port of Bremen Germany to New Orleans, around 1852,1856, and 1862. They came from the same area of Germany you mentioned. One of the relatives I have been unable to track was a Herman Heinrich Vorndam born about the same time as Herman Heinrich Fundum. So I was researching to make sure they were not one in the same, because the grave stones in Battle Creek Nebraska list him as Vorndam, not Fundum. Which I now think they are two different people.
Most all of the research on the Vorndam families that is posted is mine, so if you would like a copy of anything I have I will be happy to send. Over the last 5 years I have made and received inquires from Helga Vorndamme who lives in Germany, she doesn't speak English but her brother does. They just recently sent some information that ties their family to two of my families. I can send you that information and you may want to use it for elimination purposes, the information shows up on FamilySearch.org but doen't allow you to make all the family connections.
It will be interesting to see where your research journey takes you and if indeed Fundum turns out to be Vorndam. Please feel free to contact me at l.kupferschmid@comcast.net.

I received your posting. Yes I would be interested in receiving more information on the Fundum family. From the Hiddenhausen church records I have seemingly found ancestors back another three generations, but I am double checkng the information. The records are sometimes difficult to determine.

My great-grandfather appears to have only used Vorndum on his tomb-stone. In the area Lutheran Curch, and US census's he is always listed as Fundum (perhaps various spellings of Fundum, but always Fundum). His wife was a Fenstermaker (Fenstermacher), his mother was an Aufderheide.

I am the lead locksmith at the local school district and am buried in work, but will be double checking my sources snd e-mail you or give you access to my family tree.

Paul Claus,

this is Hans Hartmann from Germany. My wife is a nee Vorndamme. I have contact with Lynn Kupferschmid and Pat Marquardt.
I recently sent a Vorm Damme pedigree to Pat and he sent it to you, I think.

So I want you to know how you are related with that nowadays called Fundum family.

I studied those church records you mentioned and it seems that only two lines of Vorm Damme from Oetinghausen travelled to the USA.

Hope to hear from you soon in my message board of ancestry.

Hans
