Hi,

Montana doesn't publish birth dates on-line. You'll have to contact the Daniels County Clerk & Recorder, www.scobeymt.com/government.html or 406-487-5564.

However, I'm sure you'll find they have restrictions about looking up or issuing copies of birth certificates. They won't release death info until 50 years after the person is deceased.

This is what I found about the family.

In 1920 they lived in Taude, Valley, MT.
Albert B. Laurence [how spelled in Census], b. ND, 35, general farmer.
Myrtle, wife, b. MN, 23.
Margaret E., b. MT, 5.
Alton F., b. MT, 3 6/12ths.
Howard M., b. MT, 1 9/12ths.
Vincent L., b. MT, 6/12ths.

In 1930 they were living in Scobey, Daniels, MT.
Albert Laurence, 46, b. ND, general farmer.
Myrtle, b. MN, 33.
Marguerite, b. MT, 15.
Alton, b. MT, 13.
Howard, b. MT, 12.
Vincent, b. MT, 11.
Paul, b. MT, 8.

I didn't find the family in the 1940 Census.
Successful Searching!

I need some verification for the birth of Albert Victor Lawrence and Myrtle Evangeline Swanson's children born in Scobey. They are: Margueritte Evangeline born 1914 (sorry that's all I have); Howard Mitchell born 1918 (sorry again. This is all I have); Vincent Leroy born 10 June 1919 and Paul William born 19 March 1932. Please verify the names (if I have them correctly spelled) and dates (or give me the dates) and where they were born (city or township since I know Albert was a farmer... at least he was when he was living in Minnesota.
Thank you so much!!
Ginger Walls
Red Wing, MN

I have information that refers to pages 803 and 804 of the 1977 edition of the Daniels County History Book. Apparently there is a photo of Oscar and Kate von Kuster on one of those pages. I was wondering if you can confirm that and if so, if you know how I could obtain a copy of the photo? I am interested in any information about von Kusters in the book. Thank you so much for your time to investigate.

Thank you for the info on Thomas and Blanche Erickson. Blanche is my half aunt. She was the daughter of my grandfather my Andres James Carpenter and his first wife Augusta ShefferCarpenter. She was bor abourt 1889 in Outagamie County Wisconsin and lived with her aunt and uncle Benjamin and Fannie Carpenter Bowe until she married. I had always assumed she belonged to another member of the Carpenter familoy in Wisconsin.
Their marriage certificate showed she was the daugher of Andrew Sr.

Thank you very much for the time and effort you put into your research, I means a great deal to me when I can learn more about my family.

Roland

Or, this is not the correct person....OR, what I usually find, he identified the name of a friend, rather than a family member.

The Washington Death Certificate database:
--Thomas Erickson, died 30 Sep 1928 in Everett, Snohomish Co, WA, age at death: 7 years, 3 months 7 days (June 23, 1921), parents were Thomas Erickson and Blanche Carpenter.
--Thomas Erickson, died 21 June 1957, Everett, Snohomish Co, WA, age 70 (1887). father was Andrew Erickson.
--Blanche Carpenter Erickson, died 3 June 1956 in Everett, Snohomish, WA, age 77 (1879). Spouse: Thomas Erickson, father Andrew Carpenter.
--These two "appear" to be the correct Blanche and Thomas; however, the young Thomas is either the wrong one, an adopted son, or a real surprise child.

I could not find them in the 1930 Census. So, I missed them, the census missed them in Washington/Montana, the record/notes of the enumerator were lost, the page wasn't copied for transcription.

If you have further information on the person you are seeking, their known Dates of birth, etc. that might help. There are other steps that can be used...once exact identity is established.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Roland,
I did some research which indicated this was the wrong Blanche Erickson, then found the obit for the person indicated. It appears to me this is not the person you are seeking:

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

The May 28, 1965 edition of the Billings Gazette (Billings, MT)
Erickson Services Are Held at Scobey
Scobey ---
Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Blanche Erickson, wife of Conrad Erickson, were held Wednesday at the Scobey Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stanley Knudson officiating. Burial was in the Scobey Cemetery by the Waller Funeral Home.
She was born on May 3, 1889 in northern Manitoba, Canada. She grew up in Canada and married Conrad Erickson at Havre, MT, on Nov 2, 1918.
They moved to Chinook, where Erickson operated a clothing store. In 1927, Mr. and Mrs. Erickson moved to Scobey, where they purchased the Hanson Mercantile and began the Woodward Store, which Erickson operated for 25 years. In 1953 this business was sold.
Mrs. Erickson is survived by her husband; one brother, L.H. Adam of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha McFarlane, Mrs. Juliet Bretcher and Mrs. Florence Nuttal, all of Winnipeg.

The Montana Death Index:
Blanche Erickson, died 22 May 1965, age 76(1889), in Daniels County.
--If "your" record indicated a 10 year mistake, this record shows a 10 year "mistake" in year of birth (based on below), so was "your" Blanche's death in 1955?

The Social Security Death Index did not show this person. Which means she didn't have a Social Security Number, or her death wasn't reported to the Social Security Administration. In the 1950's and 60's a very large percentage of deaths were not reported.
Husband Conrad Erickson, SSN 517-01-9379, born 3 May 1887, "last residence" Malta, Phillips Co, MT., died Feb 1985.

The 1930 Census for Scobey, Daniels County, MT, enumerated April 5
Conrad Erickson, age 42, born in Sweden, immigrated 1900/naturalized, general merchant/dry goods.
Blanche Erickson, age 40(1879/1880), born in Canada (French Canadian) immigrated 1916, Alien (had not naturalized), age of first marriage 28(1917/1918).
---The age of marriage of this person matches your information on year of marriage; however this husband was Conrad. Was she French Canadian?

The 1920 Census fnds them in Havre, Hill County. She was 29. Census was enumerated on 31 January. In 1930 she was 40 by enumeration date. So this person appears to have been born between 1 Feb and April 4, 1880.

A border crossing from Canada to the US was recorded on August 9, 1942 at Raymond, MT. It identified:
--Conrad Erickson, born 6/3/1887 in Gofle, Sweden, last residence: Scobey, MT. (This DOB was a month off of DOB, based on below).
--Marie Blanche Erickson, born 5/3/1889 (was census off, or was she born a month earlier?) in Waterhen(hon?) River, Manitoba. Last permanent residence in Scobey, Montana.

World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database, Conrad Erickson born in Readville(?), Saskatchewan, Canada on May 3, 1887(same day of birth as Blanche ?). Railway brakeman. Single. Registrered on June 5, 1917.

I now start on a look for the correct person and will repost that info.

I am searching for my g aunt Blanche Carpenter Erickson. She was married in 1917 to Thomas Erickson in Valley county. I found a death record for a Blanche Erickson as death date May 22, 1965, Daniels County. The birth date is off by 10 years but that may be an error. If you could find an obituary for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Roland Carpenter

Re: Daniel Co., Vietnam servicement

I already provided these obituaries for the website but then realized that some genealogists might also like them, so here they are, courtesy of Vera at the Daniels County Leader (they couldn't be photocopied so she transcribed them for us.)

taken from Daniels County Leader July 13, 1967
Viet Nam War Hits Harder Here; Darryl Juel Killed
The distant war, altho still not officially that, in the punctilio of diplomats and governments, became tragically more personal in the Daniels County area on Monday this week. Darryl, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Juel, who farm north of Scobey, is returning in a coffin. His is the first fatality here in that macabre chess game of the two world powers in Viet Nam. Marine Sgt. L. Kelly of Great Falls, in the custom of the U.S. Marine Corps for such circumstances, came to Scobey Monday, called on Father Dwyer, and the two of them drove out into the country to perform the thankless chore of notifying closest of kin, in this case the parents, that their eldest son, Marine Lance Corporal Darryl R. Juel, was killed in action in heavy fighting July 2 in the Quang Tri sector, in Viet Nam. Field conditions in actions of this kind often prevent earlier determinations of complete casualty lists.
Darryl Juel was with C. B, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines of the Third Marine Division, in the heavy fighting which has been intensifying during the past few weeks.
Services
Funeral services are scheduled for St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Scobey, with Military honors. Date and time could not be determined, however, at this late writing, as the body as not yet arrived, nor was there word when it would be arriving, according to Waller Funeral Home, which will be in charge of arrangements. Services likely will be this weekend.
The deceased was born Nov. 9, 1946 in Seattle. He attended Scobey schools and graduated from Scobey High School in 1964. He was active in band and chorus, in the FFA, and was a piano student. A member of a family group of young musicians, from time to time in public appearances, he and his brothers and sisters took part in the popular chautauqua shows during the Homesteaders Golden Jubilee here in 1963.
Darryl enlisted Aug. 19, 1966 in the U.S. Marine Corps and after boot camp at San Diego, followed by further combat training at Camp Pendelton and still further specialist training, he was sent to Viet Nam March 1.
He is survived by his parents and four younger brothers, Don, Paul, Gordon and Grant; and three younger sisters, Dorothea, Cecelia and Theresa. His surviving grandparents are Didrick Juel of Scobey and Mrs. Anna Parent of Flaxville. Altho not yet old enough to cast a ballot in full adult citizenship, Darryl Juel now has joined that continuing and numberless legion of young fellows who have laid it on the line . . . and without whom no government could ever fight a war.

taken from Daniels County Leader January 9, 1969
Viet War Takes Second County Youth
PFC Reid Grayson Jr., 20, is the second young man from to Scobey to lose his life in the Viet Nam war. According to word received here by his wife, Judy, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reid Grayson, Sr., PFC Grayson was killed Saturday, Dec. 28, from a wound received while on combat operation. Nor further details were provided.
Funeral services for Reid Grayson Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Scobey Lutheran Church with Pastor Stanley Knudson officiating. Burial with military rites will be at the Scobey cemetery. Waller Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Word of the tragedy was brought to Scobey Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, by Major Thomas C. Hetherington of Great Falls, who flew here in a National Guard airplane.
Reid Grayson Jr. was born in Sidney May 5, 1948. He attended schools at Opheim and Scobey, and graduated in 1966. While in school he was active in the Boy Scouts and in athletics.
He attended Northern Montana College. On Jan. 23, 1968, he married Judy Hass of Dagmar. He entered the US. Army in March, 1968. Before going overseas he attended radio school at Ft. Ord, Calif., and teletype school at Ft. Gordon, Ga.
A daughter, Wendi Jo, was born at Ft. Gordon Oct. 24, 1968. After a three week furlough, PFC Grayson left Scobey on Dec. 9 for Ft. Lewis, Wash. He arrived in Viet Nam Dec. 14, only two weeks before his death.
Darryl Juel of Scobey was killed in July, 1967, the county’s first Viet Nam fatality.
In addition to his widow, Judy, and his daughter, Wendi Jo, He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reid Grayson Sr. of Scobey; on brother, Larry, of Scobey; two sisters, Mrs. Muriel Swenson of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Karla Jean Grayson of Scobey; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Clara Olson of Plentywood, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Grayson of Plentywood.

taken from Daniels County Leader September 24, 1970
Leland Mehls, 22, of Flaxville Is Viet Nam Victim
Sp. 4th Class Leland McGee Mehls, 22, son of Clarence and Idella Mehls of Flaxille, was killed in action in Viet Nam September 19. Word was brought to Mr. and Mrs. Mehls by Captain Pearson of the U.S. Army and by telegram Monday evening this week.
The Viet Cong overran, after heavy shelling, the headquarters of the 1st Air Cavalry Division headquarters at Phou Vinh where Mehls was stationed. The headquarters area had been considered a comparatively “safe” area up to the time of the surprise attack, according to Capt. Pearson.
This is Daniels County’s third Vietnam fatality. Darryl Juel died there in July, 1967 and Reid Grayson Jr. in December, 1968.
Leland Mehls was born in Scobey, August 5, 1948. He was raised in Flaxville and graduated there in July, 1966. He attended MSU at Bozeman for two years, appearing on the honor roll several times, and entered the U.S. Army June 4, 1969.
He was sent to Viet Nam in December, 1969 and was due to leave there in early December this year.
Survivors include his parents and brother, Richard of Flaxville and a half-brother Dennis Mehls.
Date of services have not been set at this writing, but will be from Zion Lutheran at Flaxville by the Rev.Richard Widerholdt with full military honors. Soldiers from Fort Lewis are expected for the services. Interment will be at Flaxville Cemetery by Waller Funeral Home.

Cindy (Juel) Edgerton

THANKS for finding so much information on the Vikjords. I'm not sure who Sida(Vikyard) is but could possibly be a sibling. Since they are buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston where my grandparents, Carl A Sorenson and Constance Vikjord as well as her mother, Bergette are,I would think there is a definite connection. I have not found where Sedenius is buried. Perhaps wherever his son Sedenius is buried. Again THANKS for everything you have found. It is a BIG help.

Stewart,

In the 1865 Census of Norway is found in the fylke (similar to our county) of Nordland, in the parish of Borge, is the gard (farm) of Vikjord. The 1865 Census had an official completion date of 12/31/1865. The ages of the persons were identified as what age they would be in 1866. Here is Sedenius, number 2021:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...

He is shown as Sedenius Pettersen, the son of Petter Abelsen. In Norway, the naming tradition of patronymics was still in effect at the time. The male received a "given" name (Sedenius), his name was then given his father's name followed by "sen," for son (in Sweden predominently "son"). His "surname" would be the name of the farm where he lived, so he would be "Sedenius Pettersen Vikjord." A daughter would receive given names, then the father's name followed by "datter." She would keep this name the rest of her life. As example, see Sedenius's mother was "Karoline Andreasdatter," the daughter of Andreas. If Sedenius had moved to another farm later in life, for example the Sletbakken, he would become Sedenius Pettersen Sletbakken. So a surname was more of an address than an actual name. Sedenius would be 16 in 1866, so he was born in 1850.

Here is the parish record of his birth:
Permanent pagelink:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16697&...
Permanent image link: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20071106610019....

He is #1, born 9 March 1850, his given names were Sedenius Johan, then Pettersen(for his father (column 5) Petter Abelsen(shown as AbelSen) and mother Caroline Andreasdatter . Column 6 were sponsors.

Here is his emigration record
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
He is #45044. He was aboard the "Hero." It was a ship of transmigration, meaning he would sail to Hull, England, then board a ship for the transatlantic voyage to North America, usually in Liverpool. In this case he was enroute from Trondheim to Winnipeg, Manitoba, departing on 2 June 1886. A large percentage of Scandinavians and other emigrants sailed to Canada (primarily Quebec) then into the US. As you can see by the list on the bottom, he sailed alone.

Have to leave now...will see if I can find any additional later.
Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

I have not found much on the Vikjords in Norway. The birth years appear to be about right. I believe Brigette's father's last name may have been Johnson, mother's possibly was Jacobson. Brigette is buried at Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston Minnesota. I have never found anything on when Sedenius died or where he might be buried.

--The "Pa" is to the question whether naturalized or alien. The abbreviation means "Papers", _NOT_ Pending Application. This means he has filed his papers for citizenship. The process was a FIVE year process, see:
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/naturalizat...

I'll add more to this explanation. In the instructions to the enumerators is found, as example for the 1900 Census: http://usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/inst1900.shtml :

#151. Column 18. Naturalization.—If the persons is a native of the United States, leave the column blank. If he was born abroad, and has taken no steps toward becoming an American citizen, write "Al" (for alien). If he has declared his intention to become an American citizen and taken out his "first" papers, write "Pa" (for papers). If he has become a full citizen by taking out second or final papers of naturalization, write "Na" (for naturalized).

The 1910 Census for Crookston Ward 7, Polk County
-Dedenia J. Vikford (As transcribed), age 60, born in Norway, immigrated in 1868(Not 1865), "Pa" (This is to the question whether naturalized or alien. "Pa" means "Papers" which indicates he had filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen. It does NOT mean "Pending Application." This is a continuous mistake.
-Brigitta(as transcribed), shown as immigrated in 1868 also. Both showing married 24 years (1885/1886). She shown as being 44 years of age(1865/1866), so while she "might" have immigrated in 1868 also, she probably wasn't married at the time.
--The 1900 Census showed immigration in 1886, married 13 years. Census was enumerated on 20 June.
--The 1920 Census identifies Sidalus (as transcribed), as immigrating in 1886, naturalized in 1892, Bergetta, same data.

So, it appears at least one of them/perhaps both emigrated from Norway circa 1886. Do you have information on them back in Norway? The database system "Digitalarkivet" appears to be down tonight, otherwise I would have done some basic searches.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of Land Patents issued under the Homestead Act:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Logon/Logon_Form.asp
It shows Clorine J. Heeter obtained 200 acres in Daniel County on 6/10/1940. This land was located in Township 33-North, Range 44-East, Section 14 (in three parts: The North half of the North East Quarter, The East half of the North West Quarter; and the SW part of the NE Quarter).

I can show you how to find the location of this farm online; but is this the area you seek? Since this land was issued in 1940, and your search identified land issued before 1932, perhaps you seek a different property.

The 1920 Census for West Valley, Valley County, MT.
Clorine J (Transcribed as Clorme J. Hester), 37, born in Indiana to father born in Ohio, mother in Indiana, farmer/general farm, owned his land.
Maud, wife, 36, born in Indiana to both parents born in Indiana.
Six children listed, two born in Indiana, three in North Dakota, one in MT (age 2 ½).
Father Silas, age 64, widower, born in OH.

Several family trees identify more on the family, including names of a number more of children. But, none identified a census record for 1930; which is not unusual given Montana and remote farm locations.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

You did mention that you did not have all of the Bystrom family names, correct?
I recall other Bystroms living in Daniels County, spec. Oliver and Amy (two Amelias?) Bystrom. The marriage records are here:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mtlcgs/nim/marr/msgsMarrag...

Lee

John or Johann Bystrom married Amelia Saterbakken and moved from Milan Minnesota to just NE of Scobey in Daniels County Montana. BLM land records show them with land in section 2 and 11 in T35N R48W. So far, I have only one daughter, Julia Bystrom that married Oscar Johnson. And so far, one daughter Amy Johnson who married Earl Battleson. Amy passed away in 2007 in Glasgow Montana. I have Amy's obit. I am posting again for Valley county. John Bystrom came to Scobey in 1910.

John Bystrom's sister, Anna Bystrom married Halvor Thompson and they moved from Milan Minnesota and settled near John Bystrom just NE of Scobey Montana. They brought nine children with them. Plenty of girls, some are Nina, Genevieve, Esther and Ruth. I have one boy named Harry Thompson born about 1896. Halvor Thompson ran a general store in Milan so not sure if he tried the same thing in Scobey. Halvor arrived in Scobey around 1914.

I am looking for more information. Anything in history books, living relatives, etc.
